The service was very horrible even heard the waitress (extra chubby brunette) say she dropped the toast but the floor is clean which totally ruined the appetite but since it was too late kept the meal she brings the check and before we could leave she says she forgot to charge us an extra $17 all K can say is WoW just lost 35yr. We asked to be seated at booth and requested a high chair. We were placed at a booth south end of the restaurant. The high chair's back was as to a table of 4 that nobody was seated. While eating a party of 4 was seated there. Okay with me. A busser wanted to move the high chair, while we were eating! I said no. She later squeezed between the high chair with a OPEN POT OF HOT COFFEE OVER MY CHILDS HEAD!!!!!!!!! No remorse. The manager, older white male, seemed to be annoyed when he realized I had a complaint. Then provided an excuse for the server. In disgust, paid my bill, tipped the server. This review isn't about the food or service - those have always been good and many of the staff know us and our regular orders from memory! A testament to the staff. But, really sad to hear that Gateway Cafe will no longer be open after 3:00 pm and no longer serving dinner. There are a lot of people - myself and my kids included - that have been regulars here for many, many years. So sad that the new owner Nick is throwing away so much business, costing jobs in the community - for many that have been there for years, and taking away dinner at a neighborhood cafe that has been a staple for so many. read more

Not at all a fan of this place. I wanted to like it because I know it's a staple here in town but there are so many better places to eat. It's ALWAYS slammed in here. It's always loud. The scene- its Memorial Day 2021- Nothing is Open except the Gate Way Cafe. Admittedly, the place is packed but even people with low expectations need some where to eat. I'm being too generous - there are no expectations for the folks who eat here. Is there a Greek restaurant council I can file a complaint with to pull their Greek card? Service was spotty at best, nothing came at the same time for our party of 3, nothing on my order in particular came as requested, and drinks were either hard to get or didn't come until near the end of the meal. My gyros meat was dry, wet and gnarly ( how?!), hash browns were cool, soft and piled high- not crispy as ordered...barley brown. The side of sliced tomatoes and onions came as no onions and as heap of grilled diced tomatoes on my already soggy hash browns. The servers are crazy busy but I'm not sure what they are doing because it never seemed to be related to our table. I'd like to add some tidbit of advice- try, show up, care, open your eyes, taste the food? Anyone of these would yield positive gains somewhere! read more

We are regulars and are always disappointed. I suppose the reason we go is that we never see the bottom of our coffee cup. We have given up to expect the food to be cooked decent. Your plate is a pile of food. Today, I changed it up by ordering a ham and cheese omelet. Since when are eggs brown? Last week, 2 eggs over medium where the egg whites were brown. They came with a side of burnt bacon. We spoke to the owner last week because of the burnt bacon, and nothing has changed. Their hashbrowns are a huge pile of wet mush burnt on one side and a soggy slop on the other side. I would not be writing this review if he had spoken to the cook. Or taught him how to cook potatoes and eggs. The waitress gave up talking to the cooks they are mean to her and has no choice but to bring out what the cook plates. Really good brunch/breakfast food. We have been here several times for brunch and have always had a great experience. They have the best skillets/omelets/breakfast when it comes to family, diner-like spots in the area. The owners and staff are always very nice and the service is quick. Usually love this place but today, not so much. I ordered my usual chicken fried steak and eggs which is usually tender and delicious. Today way tough and dry. I grew up going to this neighborhood breakfast and lunch spot. From Village Inn to Gateway Cafe it is the fast hot fare that you come to expect. It was busy and bustling when I arrived. The hostess was friendly but was wearing an unprofessional looking tank top - in December. We ordered a skillet filled with potatoes, eggs and veggies and French Toast. Everything arrived quickly, piping hot and sooo tasty! The room is much larger than you would think with tons of booths and tables. Coffee and ice water were refilled before you realized you needed it. The parking lot was was full but late arrivals can park across the street at Gateway Technical College. Be prepared to smell like cooking grease when you leave. It happens every time! read more

I absolutely love love love their homemade cream of chicken and rice soup on Sundays! The chicken and dumpling is also very delicious and on Fridays the clam chowder is yummy as well ...A+ in my book. Deanne Wendy Danielle Linda Tiffany & Dawn are the best servers because they work hard to make the customers happy PS the Greek spaghetti is to die for... & so are the variety of stir fries. There are 4 different choices which are steak, shrimp, veggie or chicken ... I get shrimp most of the time but I love all of them. Let's start with their outdated menu that doesn't make anything look appetizing, so you decide on something by the descriptions because otherwise you would order nothing. After ordering you can expect your food to be nothing more than "meh" and lack flavor, and anything great. The toast was chewy and not edible at all. This has become mine and my husband's go to place in Kenosha. Their soup is fantastic! They serve a loaf of bread with dinner which is really nice. Going for breakfast there- try the Cinnamon French Toast. They make the bread there and you can even buy it by the loaf. So...good. My daughter and I are big fans of it. You can get it with eggs and bacon or sausage, just the french toast alone, or with bacon or sausage, eggs, and hashbrowns. My husband is loony for their Gateway Pancakes which are huge and are smothered with strawberries, bananas and pecans. You can get breakfast all day. They have an extensive dessert offering- cakes, pies, ect. And this is going to sound strange but....their jello is amazing. No, I'm not 90....but I feel like they use juice instead of water because there is so much flavor. Ok, don't believe me...but I'm not 80 either. There are pies and cakes and all that...I order the jello. Sue me. I suggest you go after 11am, get the awesome soup, order breakfast, and then jello. You might leave with diabetes...but it's soooo worth it. But seriously, I've also had their beef tips over noodles. The meat was tender and I really enjoyed it. This is a comfortable restaurant that is very fairly priced. It's always fairly busy but don't let the full parking lot scare you off....they have a LOT of seating inside. Sometimes you get that sarcastic waitress that thinks its cute to be "rude" or tease the customers..And she is definatly holding down that position on first shift....I just hate that...I dont want to pretend she is funny..i just want her to get my food and be friendly. I was ready to dismiss this place as your usual greek coffee shop, and in many ways, it is. The bus boy removed the cups of people who didn't want coffee and I'm sure if I had changed my mind, he'd have brought it back, but I'd rather it was left where it was. Decor is very 90's, bathrooms seedy and very original early 70's. Our server was very sweet and polite, no issues there. My daughter claimed not to be hungry and ordered mostaccioli, which she usually pushes around on her plate and brings home. She loved it, the sauce is that sweet, cinnamon-y tomato sauce that all these greek places make. The difference is...this was really good sauce! I had chicken parmesan. Same sauce, yummy! A little half chicken breast-I normally expect a whole breast. But it was deep fried and cruncyhy. Salad was watery iceberg, blue cheese dressing was homemade and tasted more or sour cream than blue cheese. Come on, this Wisconsin, you can put a little more cheese in it! My husband had a skillet with veggies, sliced chicken breast and hollandaise sauce, topped with 2 perfectly cooked sunny-side up eggs. I doubt you could get anything like it at Denny's. Dessert was strawberry shortcake, which I guess is their trademark. The cake was pleasantly chewy,vanilla cake base, topped with vanilla ice cream, strawberry sauce with whole berries & a mound of whipped cream. Very tasty. Much better offerings here than say, oh I don't know...that nasty place my inlaws take us all the time...that's another review. And no, we didn't smell like grease upon leaving.
