Came for breakfast/brunch and we were so pleasantly surprised. First, the breakfast food was way better than we expected for a place that was clearly a bar & grill (will be back for those things too, as every seat was in view of at least four TVs). Service was fast and friendly and the to go order came out hot. Clearly the cinnamon roll is to die for! The breakfast burrito wasn't the best I've ever had but it was good! I came here with my boyfriend's family while visiting Pittsburgh on a Friday night. My boyfriend and his brother were craving steak and both ordered Prime Rib, each with two sides (mashed potatoes and salad, and mashed potatoes with fries, and just realized he never got his fries). I got the small 15" pizza with sausage and broccoli to share. For the pizza, it was honestly great - a generous 8-slice pie, fresh out of the oven, good ingredients, and enough to fill 2-3 people. Highly recommend! Sad to say however, the prime rib was mediocre; both steaks had to be taken back because they came out underdone. The steaks were clearly frozen and thawed a few times. They looked dull and tasted bland, without any structure or texture to hold the liquid and broke apart too easily. My wife and I ate here yesterday for lunch. She had the Reuben and it was really good. We both had fries which were also really good. I got the big Philly cheesesteak and it was OK. If you got a bite with no cheese it was really dry. It also took me about seven or eight bites until I got an onion. The toppings were just not spread out very well. I think if the toppings and cheese had been spread out better it would've been great. It was supposed to have mushrooms but I don't think it had them. Our server was wonderful as well. It sounded like she had worked there for quite some time. I don't recall her name but she was on top of it! We think the kids would enjoy it ... will have to come back soon! read more

When we go to Steeler games we stay in Monroeville. I can't believe we didn't try Gateway Grill before now! Cool sports bar atmosphere. Plenty of TV's. We got the rib appetizer which came with ribs, wings, fried cheese sticks, and loaded potato skins. We also got a meat lovers pizza. EVERYTHING WAS AWESOME!! They were busy because it was a Saturday evening and fans were in town for the game, but our server came over within minutes to greet us and get our drink order. I have come here to eat with my girlfriends, and I've also been on a lunch date with my husband. It is a nice spot close to home. The food is great! Lots to choose from. The Gateway Grill reminds me of a rundown diner with booze. Not necessarily a bad thing. I guess comparing them to a diner isn't entirely fair, since they are independent and offer a decent amount of choices beyond diner style food such as pizza, steaks, and seafood. We stopped here for a quick bite a few Saturdays back. It was a work weekend, meaning we were heading home to work on projects around the house. That being said, it seemed like a good idea to go ahead and grab a quick late breakfast/lunch while we were out running errands for our projects. The menu, for the most part, is greasy spoon style food. Comfort food. I was looking at the lunch options but nothing was interesting me enough so I opted for their breakfast menu which they serve until 2 pm on the weekends. I decided on eggs your way "Two It". It came with two eggs, I chose poached, toast (dry wheat), bacon or sausage (bacon of course) and home fries or hash browns (the home fries were cooked on the grill so easy decision). In the meantime I requested an Irish coffee, hold the whip. Our food came out in a reasonable time. While waiting I looked around and noticed how dated and dingy the place looked. I guess they have done some updating over the years but it still looks pretty dumpy. It's weird since their sister location, Bella Luna, received a complete makeover years ago. You would think they might want to try the same here. Food was ok. Very comparable to any diner. My poached eggs were served in a glass bowl. They were overcooked but not enough for me to request a remake. The bacon was crisp and the home fries were ok. They lacked seasoning, AKA salt. All in all ok meal. I was pleased with my coffee so not a bad stop, just not very memorable for me. If you grew up in the area this place may have a much bigger meaning to you. I didn't so it doesn't. read more

Salmonella waiting to happen. Was nauseated all night after eating 1 piece of chicken. Management and staff rude . Placed order at 9:50 pm. Was told will be ready in 20 minutes. Picked up at 10:30 pm got home around 11:15p and found this. Went to return next day around 11ish. Was confronted manager1 shouting with hand waving in my face to put my phone down on the table while other manager screaming for me to answer him. 20 minutes enduring shenanigans before return my money. Gateway Grill is one of those places that you hear people talk about but really never get a chance to stop at. That is until one day when you meet up with friends for lunch and you end up here. Walking in to this place during lunch time is like walking into a wall of noise. Now don't get me wrong, it's a good sign to walk into. That means this place has been and will be busy, that it is well liked, and it's a local favorite. Inside is set up a little wonky, but it works for the space. The main room is rather large and open. On the one side of this room is the bar area to which I cannot speak of as I did not go up there. On the other side of this room there is the kitchen. Unlike most establishments where the kitchen is hidden, you have full view of how the food is constructed. With that, it's kind of amusing to watch because patrons end up almost walking into the kitchen by mistake. We were seated in a raised booth right off the kitchen and that turned out to be great service for us. Our server was top notch with her knowledge of the food and menu. She was able to give suggestions to my friends as I already saw what I wanted to devour. I opted for the Pittsburger. Now I want to straighten something out from the description on the menu. They state that this eight ounce burger that comes off the wood fire grill and is topped with provolone cheese, fresh cut French fries and a homemade vinaigrette slaw placed on fresh Italian bread. Everything about that is true except the bread. What I got wasn't fresh Italian bread, what I got resembled more along the lines of New York Texas style toast. I feel that because of this bread choice, that's what made the sandwich turn out a bit soggier than I expected. Believe you me, it still tasted great, but a bit wet. Of course you know I got fresh cut fries as my side. I love fresh fries. I don't care how you season them, but something better about a potato cut up and fried. Went here for Wings with a big group of guys. Had no trouble getting some tables together and the waitresses were very accommodating. The menu looked good and a lot of the burgers, pizza and hoagies I saw being delivered to other tables looked very good. I had Honey Mustard and Ranch dry rub wings. The wings at some Wing Night Specials are small but these had a lot of meat on them. Was not a huge fan that you had to order by the dozen. I knew that I wasn't going to be eating 24 wings, but was sure that I would want more than 12. I ended up taking some home. Stopped in the other night after running errands. Nina was our server and she was great. Had a mushroom burger that was very tasty but light on the mushrooms. Wasn't a fan of the lettuce, tomato and pickle they put on your plate for the burger but Nina didn't mind bringing us fresh lettuce. When they showed me the pizza as you can see from the pic, IT IS DEFINITELY NOT A THICK CRIST PIZZA. They called the Manger and he barely glanced at it and said it is a thick crust pizza. Deeply disappointed in the pizza and the manager. Had the baby back rib special, restaurant and bar were both busy and my service was great. The ribs were truly "fall off the bone" very meaty, but I would say the sauce was average. Full rack of ribs, side salad and a generous portion of slightly mushy fries, but still acceptable for $15.99, pretty good deal. A lot of folks had the pizza. which I guess they're known for as well. I went to Gateway Grill Thursday night, this time for dine in. We had a few friends wanting to get together to watch the Pens game and one suggested Gateway Grill. We arrived there a bit before the game started and got a table. When the game was about to start they switched most of the TVs to the Pens game. Gateway Grill can get busy but they have a lot of TVs which is great for game watching. I should have taken a picture of the food but I was there with hungry guys who were devouring in no time. We started with an order of buffalo cheese balls. They come with a side of ranch. There weren't bad but also weren't anything great. The order seems a bit small for the price. Next we all split a pizza. The pizza was good, better than a few weeks ago when we got one to go. They seem to have plenty of staff on hand. However I think a lot of the staff is sometimes distracted or talking amongst themselves. The food came out hot but it seemed we had to always try to get our waitress's attention. She wasn't checking on us or staying on top of things. One more than one occasion both water glasses and beer glasses remained empty. Even when she stopped by the table she never offered to refill the waters. We had to ask. They do have a pretty good beer selection. Sometimes in the past we have stopped by just to pick up a six pack. However now they have stopped putting prices on beers. Seriously, I couldn't find a single price on any beers we were interested in. This is incredibly frustrating, especially because it isn't always easy to get someone to give you a price. Their prices have at times definitely been on the higher side and I don't like the practice of not displaying prices. I probably will not go here to buy beer in the future. There are so many other options and every other place I go clearly displays the prices of their products. Overall I'm not sure what to think about Gateway Grill. Generally their pizza is pretty good, but we have had a few not great experiences. Service can be spotty. It's close and I want to like it more. read more

My wife and I had the fish sandwich & prime rib respectively. The fish sandwich "was very good" & very large (1 lb.). My prime rib was medium rare as ordered, very juicy, also very large, & a great meal. We only ate 1/2 our meals so that there was room for dessert. Dessert was an ultimate chocolate cake & lemon Italian cream cake with decaf coffee. Both were delicious. Service by our waiter Connor was excellent. 2 1/2 stars. I don't know what happened to Gateway Grill. My family and I have been going there for over 15 years. The food was always good but, the place was small and there was always a wait. Then they expanded into the space next door and even recently remodeled the bathrooms. If you are a beer drinker you will be happy to know that they offer over 700 beer selections and have 34 different drafts on tap. They also have a ton of big screen TVs to catch the Bucs, Pens or Steelers. They offer burgers, calzones, hoagies, pizza, wraps, ribs, sandwiches, soaps, salads, seafood, steaks and much more. We have been countless times as the food is consistently good. What isn't is the service. Once you place your order your server will disappear until your food arrives and then disappear again for long periods of time after. If you need a drink refill or more plates or napkins you better get them while your server is at the table because you will not see them again for a while. Some of our favorites are the burgers, wings, prime rib and pizza. The burgers are huge. The wings are well seasoned and a nice size. the prime rib is juicy and perfectly cooked and the pizza is excellent as well. If only they could get their service together. Unimpressed. My buddy and I were hanging out over the weekend, catching up and having a few drinks. You know what they say, time flies when you're having fun! Also means, you may be waking up in the afternoon the next day feeling starved out of your mind. Happens to the best of us I swear! So that lead us to Gateway Grill. I searched them up on here just to check the reviews, and 3.5 stars and cheap eats were enough to make us choose this place. However, my experience was only 2 stars. Since it was more so brunch time, I went for breakfast! Got 2 eggs w/cheese, 2 sausage patties, home fries and 2 pancakes. First thing, when my food arrived to the table, my eggs were missing cheese. I mentioned it to the server who was helping us and she just said they would take it off the bill. Not a huge deal. Then I noticed there was only 1 sausage patty and my home fries were dry as cardboard. I'm not usually the picky type, but when the quality is this bad and my order was wrong.. Overall, cheap prices and half decent service. I wonder if ordering lunch at that time of day would have been better, but doesn't look like it based on other reviews. read more
