This place is like a second home to me. Everyone who works here is top tier friendly, helpful, gives great service and is so welcoming and friendly to everyone who comes in here. As a queer person, drag queen, and a person in recovery, this place is not only safe, but affirming and celebrates its many lgbtqia+ customers who are like family as well. Dan has been a protective brother to me. Has listened to me in times of crisis and I feel safe and valued here by him. Cora is the sweetest person in the whole world. She is an amazing kavatender and provides excellent customer service. Seabass is attentive as a kavatender and pays attention to details and makes my favorite drink perfectly. He's also so sweet and easy to talk to. Paul is someone I can go to for advice, he is an amazing kavatender who crafts new and creative drinks, on top of making great kava. Shannon the owner truly cares about her regulars. She has created an environment that is safe, supportive and truly welcoming to all. She is also the genius behind many of the drinks here. The kava here is the best in town! Seriously you can't get better flavor and the strength of the kava is double its competitors. My first time ever experiencing a Kava bar. It was destiny, since I'm on a road to sobriety. I was greeted by Garret the Kavatender, he explained to me what Kava was. He also gave me a generous sample to try. It tasted very earthy, it is a root of a plant. It had the kava powder mixed with water. I liked it. I order a lemon and ginger flavor and i absolutely love that one. It's funny how it makes my mouth tingle. I love this simple decor kava bar. They serve coffee in the morning. I need to try their coffee, there a lot of lounging space and wall outlet to charge your electronic if needed. They have a back patio and it's dog friendly. My kavatender was awesome and knowledgeable. I would recommend this place, a great place for my non alcoholic peeps. read more

A friend and I were looking for a place to go after a show and found Gather Coffee. Gather has a really fantastic atmosphere and vibe. It feels like a chill, trendy bar. We're not huge kava drinkers so we got kombucha which was tasty. Dan came by and generously explained kava to us and let us try some. This is a nice new coffee shop and late night Kava lounge in North Park. I picked up an iced Americano with whole milk. The Americano was tasty and came with a good amount of milk. I did feel that the espresso needed to be stronger, meaning less water or more coffee. The young gent who made my Americano was in high spirits and friendly. They offer inside and outside seating. Kava is an acquired taste. The flight consisted of six drinks. The first tasting was plain and disgusting. The other five drinks got better with each one flavored. Shannon, the owner, poured each drink and explained what kava was and how to drink it. The bar was dark with loud music from the 80s and 90s. Overall, it was a fun and unique experience. read more

I'm born and raised in Hawaii and even then, Kava isn't something so readily available at a cafe. The tingling sensation of kava on my tongue brought me back to the nostalgia of being home in the islands. But aside from that, it's a cool spot, very spacious and welcoming. Kava tastes like dirt. If you're expecting anything better, you're going to be disappointed. Now, I only tried the basic $8 plain kava. The "bartender" said the flavored kavas disguise the dirt flavor better. There is a $20 flight sampler of all the 4 basic kava flavors and two shots. I'll probably try that next time. I love this place. I have been to a few kava bars in the past, but something about the community of people at Gather Kava Bar, is something that is unmatched by the others. That "something" is not just the incredible Kava Drinks, but the staff. I have had nothing but welcoming, warm, and pleasant interactions with every team member, including the owner. The charging ports are a nice touch, considering I'm always working and in need of a charge! The menu is awesome. I've learned a lot about Kava from the staff as well. As someone who's been avoiding/changing direction from a traditional "bar" setting, this place is perfect. So just go already. read more

The prices are insane. Go to kava collective. I paid $75 for 4 drinks. There is nothing special that warrants the prices being so outrageous. The drinks aren't served in any upscale way to justify the up charge. Nothing unique about the place. read more

This place is rad! They have such a cool atmosphere and a fun patio. The cold brew coffee is so smooth and delicious. Their kava is uniquely flavored and tastes really good. Best prices for plain, high quality kava in San Diego. The only way you can get it lower is making it at home, but what's the fun in that? The people behind the counter and the owner are very friendly and attentive and they will fill you in if you've never tried kava before. I notice a lot of people walk in off the street because it looks like a regular, low-key sort of bar atmosphere and they have no sign out front besides the "Open" sign but they do not serve alcohol here. Kava is the drink of choice instead. That's okay because if you've experienced kava you will know it's not necessary. It brings a unique and relaxing head change. No hangovers, just as relaxing if not moreso, and with none of the other consequences that come with drinking booze. The catch is that kava tastes like dirt water and numbs your tongue, but nobody drinks it for the taste. In case you can't get over it, or you want something easier to drink, they have some of the best flavored kava preparations I've tried. Just a tip: you should come on a nearly empty stomach if you can, at least 2-3 hours after your last meal, this way you can get the full kava experience. Food tends to inhibit that. There are a bunch of other drinks on their menu and an outdoor area in back to sit and get fresh air or smoke if you happen to do that. All in all, kava is its own rewarding experience, great if you want to try something different than alcohol and is much easier on the body. Gather is probably the best place in San Diego to try it out. Bring some friends. read more

If you haven't stopped by Gather yet and you love coffee (and kava), do yourself a favor and come by ASAP. Gather is fairly new to the neighborhood and it's quickly become our favorite coffee shop in North Park. The staff are incredibly friendly (shout out to Rachel the phenomenal barista), the atmosphere is relaxed and inviting, and the coffee is delicious. I've tried a million different coffee places and to be quite honest, I'm a bit nit picky. Too many places have made lattes that taste burnt, salty, sickly sweet, or too milky. Gather makes it absolutely perfect. But they also have different flavors if you're feeling adventurous and the baristas are friendly and eager to offer up suggestions if you're interested in trying something new. The location is perfect. It's just off of the main street and a short walk away from a bookstore, local goods store, and cute breakfast spots. They have a few seats in the front of the store and an adorable back patio for people to relax in a COVID safe environment. Lastly, this place doesn't do just coffee. They serve kava at night which makes for a cool and night time hangout, perfect for date night, or a casual night out with friends. Super happy we found this place! read more

We like to try new places instead of going to the same place every time and this neat place popped up so we decided to give it a try. They let us know that they only serve cold brew coffee at night but the really friendly gentlemen was kind enough to give us the whole rundown on Kava as neither of us had heard of it before. So when in Rome... They have various great flavors and he was super awesome enough to let us try them! All were very yummy. It was a cool discovery of something neither of us had tried before. The atmosphere seemed really chill and if it weren't for this pandemic we're experiencing, it would have been a cool place for us to chill together. This is one of my new favorite hangouts. I love the vibe of Gather Coffee & Kava Bar. The barista was warm and welcoming and gave me some good recommendations. They have a cute patio to sit outside in the back and I felt so safe. The place was clean and as soon as one of the patrons left, they hurried up and sanitized the seating area.
