I actually found this place on Yelp after a disappointing performance from my mechanic of many years. I needed someone who knew transmissions and turned to Yelp. Gearmaster seemed like the obvious choice. I arrived and was greeted by the owner and his head mechanic. The vehicle had died and been towed to another mechanic who could not find the problem as it was intermittent, they suggested the problem was in the tranny and computer. The owner jumped in the van (part of a fleet) and took it for a test drive. When he came back the head mechanic diagnosed the situation and suggested a full check on the rack. I left the vehicle and sure enough they found the problem was broken motor mounts and transmission mounts and possibly a coil having an intermittent problem. Now this van has been making a racket on the freeway and when downshifting for years, I have taken it so many times. I even replaced the transmission! Only now was it repaired correctly and for a reasonable price, thanks Gearmaster you are first class. Also I was informed that Gearmaster was equipped to fix any major problem even non tranny related. Clean and organized and well presented. read more

Gearmaster was great. I had my 02 Ford F350 suspension, transmission, and transfer case installed at some other shop. From day one after the repairs, I had nothing but issues with my transfer case and suspension. They keep on telling me it was something that they didn't do and wanted to charge me $3500 for other repairs. I started to think I better get a second quote. This is where i found Gearmaster. Their technicians found out that the previous shop had installed the parts incorrectly and damaged some other parts. Gearmaster made the necessary repairs in the same day at a fraction of the other shop. My F350 will never see another shop. They have my business forever. The owner was very knowledgeable and very courteous. They treated me like a real customer, not like some places that think they are doing you a favor by fixing your car. These guys are great from start to finish. I have a restored '83 4X4 GMC pu that I've owned for close to 20 years. I've been towing a huge boat and last week I blew out my stock rear end (HaHa). Not funny because I was loaded with firewood. I called Gearmasters and spoke with Gabe who had his tow guy pick up my truck and take it to his shop. Hours later he called and found the problem. He also went through my drive train and found years of neglect on my part and problems with my brakes that the last mechanic caused. What was most impressive was they quoted me a good price to fix all the problems and then worked with my budget to make sure everything was perfect. They lowered their price, fixed a few things for free, and made sure everything ran great. My old truck runs better now than it did 20 years ago. Brought my Acura RSX Type-S in for a clutch replacement. The owner Aldo definitely knows his stuff and will take care of you. It's hard to find an honest mechanic nowadays that won't try to sell you unnecessary BS, this is why you should come by this place. As soon as you walk in you will notice how clean the shop is. My car was done in a very reasonable amount of time and I never had a worry about getting ripped off or a bad job done because the owner communicates with you throughout the whole process. My parent's car was having transmission problems, with only 52,000 miles on their 2001 Buick LeSabre, the automatic transmission would not shift into overdrive. I asked a mechanic I trust for a recommendation, he highly recommended Gearmaster and insisted I talk with Aldo, the owner. My mechanic said that his shop does great work at a good price, and that he would take his own vehicle there for transmission work. After talking to Aldo on the phone, I decided to have Gearmaster diagnose the problem to determine what was wrong and the cost to repair it. With so few miles on the car, I was hoping it was something simple and wouldn't cost too much to fix. To make a long story shorter; Gearmaster did a progressive diagnostic, testing the simple things and then ending up taking off the pan. They discovered metal shavings in the pan and informed me that there was something seriously wrong inside the transmission for the quantity of shavings found. Aldo gave me a quote and I decided to have them do the work. When they took the transmission apart, they found a stripped gear where 2/3 of the gears had sheared off. They showed me the gear and all the replaced parts when I picked up the car. I kept the stripped gear as a memento. The rebuilt transmission works great and I would highly recommend Aldo and Gearmaster. They really care about their customers and the quality of their work. By coincidence, my next door neighbor also had his BMW transmission rebuilt by Gearmaster. He also had very good things to say about Aldo and Gearmaster. I bought a 1997 Jeep Wrangler knowing it had a bad transfer case. Got a couple of estimates to fix it which were $2500 plus. Went to Aldo at Gearmaster after being recommended by 2 shops which didn't do transfer case work. Aldo was GREAT. In addition to the transfer case, he identified a transmission problem which I had missed. Bottom line is he replaced transfer case with remanufactured one, rebuilt transmission, changed fluids in engine and both axles and gave Jeep safety check. The total cost was just a little more than other shops wanted just to rebuild or replace just the transfer case. I'm already planning to take the Jeep back in the fall and have a differential locker installed. I know the price will be competitive and the work top shelf. read more

Lost all forward gears on my 1965 Mercury Comet. Took it to Gearmaster for an estimate. This would be the second transmission Gearmaster has rebuilt for me. The Mercury has 180000 miles on it. I took it in on a Tuesday late afternoon and had it back on the following Monday morning. I have owned the Mercury for less than a year. It turns out that the car had the wrong transmission in it. The engine is an eight cylinder and the transmission in it was for a six cylinder. Aldo happened to the have the correct transmission there in his shop so he rebuilt that one and installed it. It is a better, heavier duty transmission than the one that was in the car. The best part is that I now have the correct transmission (stronger transmission) in the car and he stuck to his original estimate. I also have a 36 Ford pickup (hot rod) that they rebuilt the transmission for several years ago and have had no problems. Great customer service, very clean shop and very friendly. read more

My 2002 3-series BMW at 78,000 miles had a transmission failure. My initial instincts were to limp the car over to the nearest dealership to get it "properly" diagnosed and possibly repaired. We all know the dealers overcharge....they diagnosed the problem with needing a total tranny replacement, and quoted me $6200. I did some looking around, speaking to some local independent mechanics, and I was pointed to Gearmaster by a number of these sources. I called up Aldo at Gearmaster and right from my first interaction with him, I immediately knew he was one of those rare gems in the industry that goes out of his way to provide excellent service to his customers. Gearmaster offered to pick up my car from the dealer themselves, and bring it to their shop over in San Jose, re-diagnose the problem, and guaranteed they'd not only do a quality job, but also that they would blow away the dealer's quote. Gearmaster got the job done quickly, and as far as I can tell, the car drives as good as the day I purchased it, if not better. I am not sure about the technical details, but Aldo explained to me why going with them for transmission work is better than simply having the whole unit replaced...Gearmaster customizes the job and the parts to your vehicle, and I am confident the work they did is better than what you can get at a dealer. To be fair, the dealer did say that they prefer not to work with transmissions. Gearmaster did the entire job for ~$4700 and will inspect the car after I put on 500 miles to make sure everything is in order. I HIGHLY recommend Gearmaster and working with Aldo. He is not motivated by commissions like the Service Advisors at BMW Dealerships, and he truly goes out of his way to make sure you are happy. If you have a transmission issue, I don't believe you can do any better than Gearmaster. read more
