The pizza is good, has a sweet sauce if that is your thing. We ordered the gluten free crust which was some of the best I've had. We also ordered the 1/2 cheese 1/2 sausage pizza. It was good pizza with thicker dough, thin crust, sweet sauce and cheddar cheese taste. I thought the prices were high, especially for the margarita pizza. read more

I'm keeping this simple. The food was good - real good. We tried a couple appetizers (good) and a couple of pasta dishes. A complaint is the the portions are just too big. Usually a lunch buffet is a lot of bland, second rate food. What a delight to stop in here for their lunch buffet! Delicious fresh salad that doesn't look like it been there for days. Tasty bread sticks with a rich marinara sauce on the side. Four different pizzas that are loaded with cheese and a flavorful sauce. The pizza is pretty garbage. The sauce itself is pretty good but the cheese is disgusting (way too much and a very burnt flavor). The crust is mid. The breadsticks also weren't good. The ambiance wasn't great either. The lighting was very dark and there was no music, so we had to talk quietly or else anyone and everyone in the restaurant could hear your conversation. Great pizza. I don't know what it is about their sauce, but it's addicting. It's true what they say: the sauce makes the pizza, and this place is amazing. The menu isn't overly broad, but it doesn't need to be. Quite a selection of drinks, too. Plus, there's an arcade with a few pinball machines in there if you're into that kinda thing. We ordered pizza for 19 people from here and it was on time, hot and pretty tasty. We chose thin crust and enjoyed the sweeter than normal tomato sauce. The cheese was cheesy and well consumed as was the Italian beef, etal topped one. Sausage and mushrooms also disappeared quickly. I have been a long time patron of Gel's. The Antipasto salad has always been one of my favorites. I understand that times are tough and businesses have to raise prices but that shouldn't lower the standards of you food. I ordered the Small antipasto salad which has always been more than enough for two people. It was a carry out order and when my husband got home with the salad it was much smaller, the lettuce was rotten, and everything in it tasted spoiled. I did call and they told me they would credit me for it. So the price has gone up in the serving size had gone down and the ingredients were not good. I did give them another chance and just ordered a garden salad with the same result. The lettuce was rotten again and the other vegetables were substandard. When I ordered a large pepperoni pizza that costs just over $20, I expected to get more than 10 pieces of pepperoni for the entire pizza. After a couple of slices with none, I started to check the rest of my sad looking pie...very few pieces of pep on it. When I called in to complain, I was told by the person on the phone that they put it under the cheese. As you can see by the attached photo...they aren't there! I was also told that the makers sometimes aren't consistent with the amount of toppings they use. I've ordered from here a couple of times. Sometimes you really just want a slice! And when that happens, then Gelsosomo's is a pretty good choice. Service is fine to me. And I've always gotten all the toppings I ordered. So no problems there. In the Covid window, they have been doing all curbside pick up. That's been a bit hit or miss. But honestly, no big deal. Just left the Chesterton location and the SERVICE WAS AMAZING. the bartender/server was over the top attentive and friendly. When we arrived the bar was full, private dining room was full and the tables were 75% occupied and she handled them all with professionalism and with a smile. Will definitely be back.. Once a month - Usually I Dine in & Food is Decent -little more costly then others but they have a large Menu, Service is normally good, & the kids dig it because they have pinball games, & tons of 25cent/50cent little trinket stuff for my 3yr old! But carry out gets a 2 & Dine in i give a 31/2. Visited for a small family party. The very first thing I noticed were the hand painted walls. Pretty nice touch to a pizza joint if you ask me. Bread, Antipasto salad and pizza was the menu for lunch. The sauce on the pizza is a little sweeter than most & the cheeses they use go very well with the sauce. We had three different pizzas with a variety of toppings. I enjoyed them all. Who doesn't like a bonus? - - there is a pub attached to the back of the restaurant and they are serving some pretty tasty craft beers up. Wait staff was fast and friendly. Just had a terrible experience here. Took 90 minutes for an absolutely disgusting over sauced pizza. 2 people at the table didn't have pizza and were served their meals about 15 minutes before the pizza arrived. My daughter had spaghetti, which was cold. It was not busy. Waitress was mediocre, didn't see her very much. The other table in our section had a toddler that screamed non stop for 45 min. Not the restaurant's fault but added to the overall crap experience. We've been here before and never had such a bad time. We won't be returning. read more

After a beautiful, hot, sunny day at Warren Dunes, we decide to head back to Mokena, but will stop at Redemaks. Totally jammed, hour wait. So we drive on. Finally, by Chesterton, the missus says "just stop SOMEWHERE and let's eat. We really don't do chain restaurants, so we see Gelsosomo's. Let's try it. From the first minute in this place, I wasn't too happy. First, they sit us under this rather large TV. Secondly, the TV was blasting loud, couldn't even talk. Tell the waitress when she arrives to get me a beer, and turn down the volume, please. When she returns with our drinks, she takes our app order, but has to have me repeat myself. Why? 'Cuz she never turned down the TV! Finally, she put it on mute. All the appetizers were straight out of a box from Sysco (I'm just guessing, but there was nothing homemade about them). Bland, and the marinara sauce accompanying the appetizer sampler was God-awful. Wife and kids split a pizza. It was OK, nothing more. I take a risk and order deep-fried shrimp. Pathetic. These were butterflied to appear larger, but in reality they were pretty small shrimp, and few at that. The breading was actually not bad, panko I believe. Then the fries that were on the side were a sad sack of crap. The waitress looked to be bothered having to work. Which was funny, because the other waitress working (not ours, unfortunately) was constantly smiling, cheerful to the tables around us, and always busy (which is amazing as she was clearly pregnant (blue tattoo on arm waitress=best). I wanted another Blue Moon, but getting her attention was near impossible. Finally got one, and this time I made a point of saying "no orange in my beer please". Ticked me off, when I ordered my first beer, it's got a piece of fruit in it. Didn't ask for a fruit beer. Anyways, will NEVER go back to this hole. BTW, this place has the worst decor EVER. Let me preface this by saying I've been going to Gelsosomo's for about six years. The pizza was once excellent and the service was pretty good. I always looked forward to eating at Gelsosomo's. The past year, the Chesterton restaurant has gone down hill. First, they've gotten stingy on toppings. When you're charging $16 for a basic medium cheese pizza, you shouldn't be so stingy. The pizza recipe must have changed. It's still okay, but not as good as it was in the past. And they no longer offer Calabrese, which was my favorite. The biggest change is the increasingly rude staff. Last month, I was parked for about five minutes in one of the "pizza pick up" spots, waiting for my pizza to be done. This middle-aged blond knocks on my car window and tells me to leave. I explained I was there legitimately - a customer. She said the parking spots were 10-minutes only and stomped off. Since the parking lot was virtually empty, there was absolutely no reason to get nasty. On Friday, June 22, I called in my order. The guy who answered was rude and condescending - he acted as if he was doing me a favor by taking my order. When I picked up my pizza, the individual who totaled the order couldn't bother to hide the fact that he was unhappy with his job. Banged my pizza box on the counter and didn't have the manners enough to say "Thank you," even though I thanked him. I'm not going back. The food is only mediocre and I sure don't have to put up with crap when I have a choice. read more

I've been to Gelsosomo's many times throughout the past 12 years. It was once a very good restaurant. I stopped by in July, and it wasn't so good. The pizza was lousy and the staff didn't seem to care. But, I figured everyone has an off day. Went back last weekend. First, I called in my order and the guy who answered the phone was EXTREMELY unprofessional - barking into the receiver, making it clear I had interrupted something more interesting. Walked in to pick up the pizza - staff ignored me for 10 minutes. I wouldn't care that much about their rudeness if the pizza was good. It wasn't. Clearly, new management has taken over. The food is good but what I really go here for is the Karaoke. The Karaoke DJ (Jeff) is a true KJ master. He starts the show on time and keeps it going until 3am. For someone like me who likes to sing a lot this is great. He doesn't care if the bar is empty, if your name is in you're singing, sometimes back to back. A good pizza place with lots of options for toppings. One half of the restaurant is a pizza restaurant, the other half is a bar. They are separated by a hallway, so the smoke and noise from the bar doesn't really make it to the restaurant. The pizza side is great for lunch or dinner and works well with families. There is even a back room for larger groups or parties. When in Chesterton on saturdays, we tend to head to the bar part for some karaoke and delicious beer. They have Gumball head on tap and the drinks are reasonably priced. For those worried about smoke, the room is large enough that unless the smoker is at your table, it's usually not that bad. It's your best bet for a Bazbeaux / Jockamo's style pizza in northwest indiana. read more
