Don't order just the cheese pizza here and maybe avoid the thin crust? It just seems a little overcooked. Pretzel bites are covered in a weird butter with garlic. Wasn't too into that. That being said, the pizzas with more toppings with a thicker cross seem to be really good. It's not the best pizza in the world, but really decent and the staff is always super friendly. Even on packed nights, they only have a couple servers, but the servers are fast. They really know how to hustle. It's pretty crowded in there on some nights places set up decently has a little stage in front in case they want to have a band. I like going there on Friday nights for karaoke. Just a heads up the place is super packed on a Friday evening, karaoke starts at seven and ends at 11. Everybody in their brother comes there for that to sing or just to sit and listen to other sing. The nice thing is is that since it is at a pizza place and it starts at seven anyone can sing, including children. The cutest youngest little girl I have seen sing did the K-pop demon hunters one of the songs from Matt and she was so adorable! Other kids have gotten up there and wow! They've blown me away with their voices and I feel funny going up there after them. There is a range of singers from new people that aren't the best at singing, but they love to sing and that's great! It takes a lot of courage to go up there. Everyone is super supportive and claps because like I said it's really hard to even go up there to even sing so the courage is really appreciated. This place is totally laid back during the day. We have gone here for lunch several times. We have gotten pizza, hamburgers, hot dogs, fries, mushrooms, and more. The food is good and reasonably priced. The service has always been good too. There is a deck off the side to sit out on which we like when we are there. The service is wonderful. People are very friendly. I did have the grilled chicken sandwich , which much to my dismay was basically frozen chicken that seemed to have been taken out of a family pack bag and microwaved. Then slapped onto a bun and plated . Their pizzas are excellent. I recommend the barbecue chicken, the pepperoni sausage is excellent also. Unfortunately, they don't have any mixed drinks, wines or anything that I know of other than beer, bottled canned, etc.. the first time being there, I ordered two shots an they didn't have that as an option, so Eric the gentleman who waited on us I believe was his name, Very nice place to go. Having lived in NY for 13 years, I'm probably spoiled but this was below average pizza. I knew as soon as I picked up the first slice I was in trouble. There was no cornmeal and the crust was white underneath and on the ends. . Certainly a temperature problem with the oven. The pie was generously covered with ingredients, which means they try and care, but the execution was really bad. Crust had the texture of salt water taffy, which isn't what you want with good pizza. Also, the dough wasn't seasoned at all, and had no salt. The sauce on the other hand, was so salty I could have used it to melt the ice on my sidewalk. Also tried the wings. It seems the same problem as the pizza. The wings were mushy, and there was not even the slightest bit of crunch to them at all. They were generously sized, which again tells me they care about a quality product, but either the oil wasn't hot enough, they ran too many batches back to back, or just don't have proper execution. These wings could have used 3-5 more minutes in the fryer at 10-15 degrees hotter oil. Sauce was OK, but sweet. I've noticed that pizza in this part of the country is not generally good, so when I see the 4 and 5 reviews, it tells me people just don't know a good pie here. I would think this close to Chicago there would be some trickle down, but apparently not. Staff was nice, and it's obvious they care, so if they can improve execution they may have a money maker here if they differentiate from the rest of the market. read more

I understand everyone is short staffed so I didn't even care about the hour fifteen/hour twenty deliver time...and I even understand to some degree the prices are going up. What is not ok to me is the "real right now" prices can't be found anywhere. My bill was so over the amount it should of been and we looked at every menu they had online and in person AND used our past experiences tried to figure how they got the amount. Couldn't figure it out. To no one's surprise and no fault of the delivery driver there was no itemized receipt. Shocking. So on top of that I asked for one thing in the order to be a little different and they didn't even do it so it couldn't even be eaten. I have family in Valpo and visit often. Last night I was in town and heard Verona's was open again. The new place looks great. Plenty of space and a billiards table sits to the far side of the dining room. And as far as the service and the pizza on Thursday night it was as good as ever. I love the quality of the pizza. We had a large sausage and mushroom that had that great Verona's freshness and great flavor. The new place is great all the way around and I'll be back when I visit Valpo next time. read more

We just had this pizza last night for the first time ever. It was recommended to me by my neighbor Barb (thanks Barbie!) and as I bit into my pizza, the first thought I had was all of the wasted years we spent going to other pizza places instead of this one. This is my new favorite pizza place. They also have other things like sandwiches, salads, fries, onion rings, and desserts. They have a lovely outdoor eating patio as well. They have karaoke and live bands, but we didn't partake in that. I'll post what we ordered and our review of each: Cheese pizza: Sweet delicious sauce, perfect thickness of crust. Plenty of cheese. Super tasty! Sausage pizza: Same as above but with chunks of perfectly seasoned sausage. Delicious! Chicken Salad: Bagged salad lettuce that was tasty. Finely cubed chicken may have been canned or frozen but still super tasty! Good amount of salad toppings! Burger: Man oh man alive! This burger was huge! It looked like a 10 pound burger! It was so thick and perfectly cooked. Best burger my hubs ever had in his life. The accompanying steak fries were perfectly cooked and hot/fresh. Had a terrible experience here! Food was served cold and the noodles were served floating in water! When I ask for it to be warmed they acted like it was my fault. The manager was kind enough to remove the meatballs from my bill! Wow. I have to review now because I just rifled through a medium, thin Verona Special. Delicious. What a great pizza. Solid. Great crispy crust, extra thin. Good amounts of cheese. Good tasting and browning cheese. The sausage was a little spicy, in a good way. I would be very surprised if it was brought in. More cheese than Gelsosomo's but not as much as Tony's. Best crust of the three. Sausage equal to Tony's but different. Most subdued sauce of the three, but it worked well. Overall a great package, a high quality and tasty pizza. On the other hand, the deep dish pizza was just bad. Too much dough and chewy at that. A perfect example of what non-Chicago people think is deep dish. Big chunks of hard to chew crust at the edges. The sauce was more prominent and it couldn't carry the pie. Not a good showing. Also, the phone ordering process is a bit chaotic and I got the last, thin crust pizza in about 1:40 instead of the promised 1 hour. Still, I'm not going to bitch about the delivery time of an awesome meal; within reason. The website sucks and I still haven't figured out why my total is 18 and change, more than five dollars more than the menu price. For awesome, thin crust, Chicago style pizza, four stars. the pizza was absolutely disgusting my son wouldn't even finish a piece and he Loves pizza. my husband same, loves pizza and could barley stomach it. the crust was so thick and dry, they took the toppings off. i ordered a gyro and the meat was so dry and hard the tomato was mushy and the onions were old the pita was soggy and i didn't even eat it. (the taziki was sour cream basically! the cheese in the mozz sticks were hard and not warm. such a waste of $45 dollars and my dog even threw up from the little piece she had and she has been sick like once in her life! this was a third try for us and thee worst experience yet! read more

One of the better beef sandwiches out there! I have it on the garlic bread with cheese. The pizza while not my favorite in town is pretty good as well. Wish there was a little more consistency with them. The owners are very nice people and always enjoy speaking with them when I'm waiting for my order. If I had a way for no stars I would sadly. I guess if you are not a regular of theirs in Portage they treat their new customers like crap as I will assume. (Sorry on choice of words, but seriously how this company in Portage makes one feel and I will explain it all in this review as well. Definitely unlike the other Verona's in NW Indiana. Maybe just a management issue or something. Tonight at about 4:52pm an order was placed for our residence. Originally wanting a giant size taco pizza, but a disappointment because they use sausage for the taco meat (you would think they would use ground beef or another meat). when told they use sausage we decided to change the order. We went with their veggie pizza, which Verona's swears by having fresh ingredients. But sadly not all ingredients are fresh. So the pizza delivery guy comes and first thing I hear unlike other pizza places is, "Please don't punch me, but I got bad news, I forgot your other order, but I called in to have someone bring it after this delivery". I never in my life of ordering pizza had this happen, and mistakes do happen, but real bad choice of words from a delivery person. Do not get me wrong, one can take it humorous or what not, but at the current point I was not have a humorous time. Now for the interesting part of my review. We open the box to find that the mushrooms on the pizza are bit slimy and can tell 100% they are canned mushrooms not your typical fresh mushrooms that majority of pizza places use these days. Not top include the tomatoes were semi fresh. The tomatoes had that taste that they were refrigerated, so not a great taste, and to mention the dough was undercooked. So at this point I am slowly not feeling well, either the stress with the manager or the pizza not being cooked right and not to mention jaw hurts from trying to chew on the pizza itself. The crust was way too thick for a regular order. usually that type of pizza uses thin crus not thick crust. (someone needs more training on how to make a pizza) so I phone in to ask for the manager, I wont get started on how they answer the phones. so i ask for the manager, I get ryan, who I has to ask for his name not the other way around. Things is I don't care if you get nice customers or disappointed customers, if you are the manager act like it when you speak to a customer. I am sorry if you are having a bad day, but we all go through it at some point in our lives, just deal with it. So Ryan answers the phone, and I go about explaining the issue, of non fresh ingredients, how the pizza was under cooked and how I want a refund, as I wont eat the rest the pizza. He replies with a hold on, puts me on hold i guess to talk to the kitchem to find out, yup the mushrooms are canned, the tomatoes he claims are fresh, but did say they refrigerate them before cutting them. Refrigerating tomatoes at some point ruines the taste of them. One is to keep them out at propper room temperature before use, so you keep falvor. The best part is his inspector as he used for words said the pizza was cooked, of course you will go with your worker and what they say you can not see my pizza. the the #1 reaosn for no refund is, "we can not give you a refun if you are nto happy with your pizza" That is what ryan stated. so I guss the only way for a refund is if people get sick from food poisoning then. We will not being eating from this location ever again. Not sure how in the world Verona's allowed this place to open in Portage. here is the tip of the iceburg, on their website they quote one price then over charge you as the receipt shows. I do not erecommend this place to anyone, maybe the other locations, but not portage. You may as well take your money and order form another location for pizza. J & J's Pizza shack or I heard Bam's i pretty good, should have done Bam for a first time, now we know better than to go with verona's again. To all those who love their pizza, like stated, not sure how long you been going there, but being my first time and having a bad time, that is real crappy to get the service we got tonight.
