Let me start by saying that the absolute star of the show was the amazing service we received. Spectacular service from specially, Phil . He was so tentative to us, from start to finish made us feel so welcomed. He always checked in to see if we needed anything , and made sure our drinks were full. I accidentally burnt my finger, and he immediately ran into action, providing a cooling gel cream for my finger . And kept checking up on me to make sure I was okay. If there's one restaurant I can always count on for a satisfying meal, it's Gen Korean BBQ House. This has easily become my all-time favorite spot for KBBQ, and despite visiting countless times, I still get excited every time I come back. This is actually the only Gen location I've visited, but it's set in a great area and has a conveniently located parking structure nearby. Having one less thing to worry about before diving into an AYCE feast is definitely a major plus in my book. Like most popular KBBQ spots, this location can get pretty busy, especially on weekends. Because of that, I'd highly recommend joining the waitlist or making a reservation ahead of time whenever possible. Fortunately, I've never had to wait too long to be seated, which I'm always grateful for. That said, I do try to plan my visits during less busy hours, often taking advantage of their lunch special, which runs from opening until 3 PM if I'm not mistaken. What keeps me coming back, though, is the quality of the food. The meat selection is consistently delicious, and sides are fantastic, and there's a surprisingly solid variety of appetizers to choose from as well. No matter how many times I visit, there are a few menu items that are absolutely non-negotiable for me. I always order the Beef Bulgogi, Gen Premium Steak, and Spicy Chicken. They're my tried-and-true favorites, though my boyfriend and I also enjoy branching out and trying new items whenever we're feeling adventurous. That being said, I'm definitely a creature of habit and tend to gravitate back to my favorites every single time. While my boyfriend is usually focused on loading up on protein, I'm equally excited about the sides. In fact, I might be slightly obsessed with their potato salad and house salad. The potato salad has a subtle sweetness to it along with little bits of corn that add great texture and flavor. As for the house salad, that dressing should honestly be bottled and sold separately because it's completely irresistible. A great side dish can elevate an entire meal, and Gen absolutely delivers in that department. The atmosphere is another thing I enjoy about this location. It's energetic, lively, and fast-paced, with servers constantly moving throughout the restaurant to keep up with the steady flow of tables. Despite how busy it can get, the restaurant still manages to feel modern, stylish, and well-organized. I've only dined upstairs once or twice, but the entire space feels thoughtfully designed and perfect for everything from casual lunches to group dinners. Perhaps my favorite part of every visit is the service. The staff here consistently bring great energy and positive attitudes to the dining experience. They're attentive, efficient, friendly, and always willing to help with recommendations, refills, or anything else you might need. Even during busy rushes, they somehow manage to keep things running smoothly. I love Korean bbq. The meat, the atmosphere, the sides. I can't complain about leaving satisfied. However, yesterday was disappointing. Went there with my husband and son. We weren't greeted by anyone for almost 5 mins. A manager walks over and says you need help how many in your party. I say three he walks away before coming back to seat us. This already left me on edge. Our waiter Jason was amazing. Friendly, attentive and polite. I have no issues with him. My issue is with management. It wasn't that busy because the upstairs was closed. Which causes them to staff less people. That trickles into less staff members to do a lot of jobs especially when it gets busy out of now where. Haven't been to this location in awhile, but it was a good night. Our runner Elias (sorry if I spelt that wrong) was super friendly and continuous checked in and asked if we needed anything. The meat quality was also better than I remember. The pork cheek and brisket were definitely our highlights but they had a large menu with a variety of options. The only downside is the location is definitely on the older side; the booths were a bit old/dirty and the vents don't work that well. There's structure or street parking to get here. It can get packed and you'll might have to wait outside. They have reservation for 10+ memebers. There's plenty of seating inside with two floors available. It's decently clean inside. The staff were nice although today seemed like an off day. We didn't get our grill replaced as often as usual so it got quite smokey. And when we did get the grill replaced the server didn't turn it back on or the flame just completely went out. One of our members didn't get his water refilled even when we left their cup out towards the table end. Towards the end it seems like our table didn't get much attention but we at least got the bill on time. The food was pretty good. The brisket and bulgogi were the highlights. There seems to be new rules every time I come back here lol. As of June 2026, there's a rule that you can't request two of the same meats in an order. You're also limited to 4 meats per order. Service is comically slow (I guess their way of getting you to eat less and run up your time) and the servers hardly ever fulfill the entire order. Granted it is quite busy, and I imagine it's easy to forget, but it ends up being the case that you order the same meat 5 separate times and there's still only a 50% chance it'll actually come to you. Items on the menu go out of stock. One time I was here they were out of pork belly, another time they were out of steak, this time they were out of edamame. Not sure what their stock/the demand is like but these seem like basic things you should have plenty of supply for at a kbbq place. It's been a long time since my family has dined at Gen. Amazingly the prices haven't been increased by a huge amount since I was last here. I joined the waitlist when we were in the parking structure, but when I checked in with the host we were placed in line as though we had shown up, which defeated joining the waitlist. Not sure if this was because it was New Year's Day and busy or an anomaly. It was about a 45 minute wait and extremely busy, but once we were seated the service was overall good. The food we ordered came out relatively timely. They changed our grill. Similar to other reviews, my main complaint is the quality of the meat, specifically the brisket. Not sure what was going on with it but after cooking it just turned into bits on the grill. Seemed like it was a freezer storage issue. The restaurant still has a club like atmosphere, glad the floor wasn't as greasy as other reviews reported. Our overall experience was a 3.5 but I'll round up to 4. I've been to this Korean BBQ restaurant many times in the past, which makes this review especially disappointing to write. Over my recent visits, I've noticed a significant decline in both food quality and cleanliness. The biggest issue is the hygiene. During my last visit, one of the dishes brought to my table appeared not to have been properly washed. Even more concerning, the grill plate was visibly dirty and still had food residue left from a previous customer. This is something that should never happen at a restaurant, especially one where customers cook food directly on the grill. We were able to be seated immediately, which was nice as I know there is typically a line for Gen. This was the first time I'd been at any Gen location, and I was severely underwhelmed. The floors and tables were slippery/sticky with grease. Our server was changing out our grill too much as the beginning, then not at all at the end. They also turned off the grill each time they changed it and we'd have to flag someone else down to turn it back on. We never received water refills. The meat itself was very poor quality with a lot of tendon. It was so chewy that eating it without choking was almost impossible! Get as much kimchi, mandu, jalapeño, rice cake, salad, etc. as you can. For the main course we tackled beef bulgogi, spicy pork bulgogi (it's not that spicy at all!), garlic chicken, ramyun, and bulgogi fries. Prepared items like ramyun and fries were a tad on the cold side. I noticed a lot of reviews mentioning the floors felt greasy/slippery and they are all true. The wait time here was not that bad was less than 20 minutes at the moment on a Sunday evening.. parking is really hard to find since restaurant is on Main Street. My husband and I came here for Saturday dinner. We waited in the virtual line on Yelp and came in when it said our table was ready. It was both of our first times here. The ambiance is very club-like. The lighting is dark and the music is loud. The service was slow and inattentive. When I go to a Korean bbq restaurant, the flow of the food and side dishes need to be 100% in order for me to enjoy and eat a lot. If the flow of food takes too long, it makes me feel full and impatient. That's how it was. We'd order food and it would either not come or we'd have to remind someone passing by to bring it to us. They were out of corn cheese & onions. The side dishes were a huge disappointment for this Korean girl's palette. The kimchi, japchae, soup - they did not taste at all like what they were supposed to. Not authentic at all. The meat quality was decent. Maybe a 3.7/5 stars. The grill needed to be changed way too often. For me, the side dishes are just as important, if not more important than the meat. They have to compliment each other well and elevate each other's flavors but... it was really lacking here. Unfortunately, will not be returning. Suggestions: - A tablet on each table for customers to order their own food would be more efficient than having to wait for a server. On Memorial Day weekend, reservations through Yelp came in handy. Don't get me wrong, it was a little wonky due to our placements on the wait continuing to move lower on the cue. I brought it up to the host and showed her in real time that my wait time and cue went from 3rd to 9th, referring to the parties ahead of me. She saw that the system kept putting me lower on the cue. Be sure to pay attention and bring it up right away. It might also be better to consider calling to make reservations so that doesn't happen. Either way, the yelp reservations saved us and our part of 4. The wait was limited to 5 minutes if that, and by the time we left you could see the line wait for Gen exceeded out the front door. Service was impeccable. They changed grills immediately and constantly. On a holiday weekend we didn't expect such attention. The food and ambiance was incredible too, and it was the first time I realized there was a second floor available. It's not my first visit but it absolutely won't be my last. We all got the $30 regular AYCE but they didn't offer a premium at $50. Pricing was affordable and reasonable. There are many Korean BBQ spots but this was by far best in price. Also, the Nutella filled mochi pancake topped with powdered sugar for dessert offered by the server was a hit at the end of our meal. Gen KBBQ is a very popular place for my family. I've been to several locations, including Concord, Burbank, and now Alhambra. The Alhambra location is two stories, close to the parking lot, and the wait wasn't as long as at the other locations (about 15-25 minutes). My favorite meat was definitely the bulgogi. It was super tender and sweet. I know the restaurant is described as loud, but I got overwhelmed by the noise very quickly. The food was delicious, but the ambiance may not be the best if you, a family member, or a friend has sensory sensitivities or is easily overwhelmed by loud environments. read more

Nice big two tables for our party. Unfortunately, we had a small incident. My mom had fell due to the floors, being fairly slick hurt her shoulder pretty good . Ivan, the manager was amazing. He made sure that my mom was OK and if she needed anything at all, they would take care of it. Thankfully, she was OK and Ivan was amazing and took care of all of our drinks which we had quite a few of them because we ordered 2 pitchers of Beer and 2 Soju and other stuff as well. All was well. Made a reservation for 4pm this afternoon and it took them 40 minutes to seat us even though we arrived right on time. What's the point of taking reservations if you're not going to be prepared to seat us at the time of the appointment? I'm very confused. They also ran out of a lot of items and overall service was very slow, even though half the restaurant was empty when we were there. The quality of meat was so-so, ban chan was mediocre, rice paper tasted old, radish paper was off-colored... the only thing that stopped me from telling them off right then and there was worrying they'd spit in my food. Why didn't we leave if the wait was so long? Because we were told constantly that "they are backlogged right now and will seat us soon", 15 min later, 25 min later, 30 min later... all lies. Meanwhile only 1/3 of the restaurant was full... what was taking so long? They were washing the dishes, they said. Huh??? Honestly, with all these other ayce kbbq places around these days, I would never come back to dine at this Alhambra location again. This is a 3.5 star review. I arrived with a party of 5, Saturday, 6ish PM. It was busy but not packed, there was another party of 8 ahead of us but they were seated as we got there. We were greeted at the entrance after about a minute and were seated about 5 minutes after that at a table one the 2nd floor. Our server, Anthony, sat us and explained the menu. He was good but I could tell he was busy. He seemed a little um, neutral? Didn't smile or say you're welcome at all but it's not a big deal, he clearly had other tables to serve. No hard feelings from us. Had to remind him a couple of times for extra sides and water refills but we appreciate his service. Also, our table was clean. The meat quality was good! We ordered bulgogi, thin sliced brisket and sirloin steak, garlic chicken, shrimps - both fresh whole and fried, and some pork belly. All the meats were tender and the shrimps were delicious but your mileage may vary depending on how you cook it. We were lucky to have a great cook taking the grill - my wife! My favorite was the sirloin steak, I must have eaten at least 3 myself lol. The fat was rendered perfectly and it melted as I chewed! The salads they served us were also good, though the first one had some browning lettuce which was off-putting. The 2 that followed were fresh. I'm not sure why they serve such small and few banchan (sides) for a party of more than 2. They literally put one spoonful of mash potato, one spoon of pickled cucumbers, same for kimchi and the radishes. We probably went through 8 rounds of banchan between the 5 of us. If it's just one person I'd argue that they would still be too small, but they are bottomless so thats that. Gen needs to hire a few more people at this location to help refill them more often so that people don't have to wait up to 10 minutes for a new round of banchan. The grill was swapped regularly for a clean grill which was awesome that we didn't have to ask, it was just done. I've eaten at other kbbq places where they NEVER change it unless asked to. Floor was greasy and slippery, but it didn't bug me too much. I had to remind my party to be careful while walking. Overall it was a 3.5 star experience. Minus one star for the small sides and greasy floors, and minus half a star for the indifferent service, not that it was bad but they could have come off as a bit friendlier and happier. As expected, we knew Gen usually gets heavy foot traffic so we decided to join the Yelp waitlist before making the drive to the restaurant. Got seated right away but in a way I wished we didn't. Was ready to place in our order, but was told to wait for a server. Sat there for a good 20mins before a server came up to talk to us. I honestly can't blame that server, he did his best but it's seems like there was no communication between the hosts/servers. They kept filling up tables before the servers are ready. Wait a good 30+ mins to actually eat. We were starving so avoid hunger, we kept eating a little rice with sauces provided. For the price they be charging for dinner at Ayce, meats can be way better. However, I'm writing this review to give a shoutout to our server, Spencer! He gave exceptional service and was super upbeat and friendly! We went yesterday to celebrate my daughter's graduation because she had been wanting to come here for a long time. Unfortunately, this was both my first and last visit. The food was okay, but nothing amazing. There are plenty of places with better quality food. What truly ruined the experience, however, was the service. When we arrived, I informed the hostess that the rest of our group (only five people total) was parking the car and would be joining us shortly. Her response was, "Your time starts as soon as you're seated, so that's your time, not mine," followed by an eye roll before she walked away. Since we were celebrating my daughter's graduation, I chose not to say anything and let it go. We were seated upstairs where it was so dark that we had to use our phone flashlights just to check whether the meat was cooked properly because there was no lighting above the grill. Throughout the evening, several different servers came to our table, each saying, "Your waiter will be with you." They kept bringing items to the table, but since it was my first visit, I had no idea what they were for. Every time I tried to order meat, I was told to wait for my waiter. By the time four different employees had told me the same thing, we were still sitting there without anyone taking our order. When a waiter finally arrived, his first comment was that no one had turned on our grill. I asked if he was our waiter, and he responded, "Wait, I'll be back," and walked away. We continued waiting. Eventually, he took our order, but several items we requested were forgotten. Later, our server was changed to a young woman who appeared overwhelmed and unsure of what she was doing. At one point, she dropped my daughter's paper towels on the floor, rolled her eyes, and walked away without saying a word. No one returned to our table, so I had to get up myself to find more napkins. Meanwhile, I watched the manager walking around demanding things from the staff but never actually helping them. The employees looked stressed and unsupported. The only time staff seemed readily available was when it was time to bring the check and collect the tip. After we paid, no one thanked us for coming, only collected payment and tip without a single word. I understand that restaurants can get busy and that employees can feel overwhelmed, but the food wasn't free, and basic customer service should still be expected. From the moment we walked in until the moment we left, we were met with rudeness, poor communication, and a complete lack of hospitality. Just wanted to shout out the super sweet host working today July 20th at around 130pm. I had some dinner ideas today that including just wanting a few sides of cucumber and kimchi which are my fav from here. Went in, they were clearly busy, I overheard they were down to only one server. She and the server working were literally RUNNING around the restaurant. I just want to recognize both team members for working their butts off and doing the best when the situation wasn't in their favor. Also, to the rude party waiting, I truly hope you guys see the patience that food service workers must have when thrown into a situation like that. Came on a Monday afternoon for their lunch menu. Lunch was Monday to Thursday until 3pm. Free parking in the parking structures on 1st street. Lunch was $20.95 per person. Dinner was $30.95 per person. The lunch and dinner menu were very similar. The premium menu cost the dinner price plus $20. I personally enjoyed the HANGJUNGSAL or Signature Pork Check. My party enjoyed the RED WINE SAMGYUBSAL or Marinated Pork Belly with Red Wine. Our favorite dish was the Gen Premium Steak or Top Sirloin Coulotte. The PREMIUM CHADOL or Premium Angus Brisket (thinly sliced), was fast to cook, but very fatty. The HAWAIIAN STEAK or Sweet Beef Teriyaki with Pineapple Slice didn't taste fresh. Did not like the NOOK GAN SAL or Marinated Beef Finger Short Rib, took too long to cook. Enjoyed the CALAMARI STEAK or Calamari Steak sprinkled with Green Tea Salt after adding additional green salt. The SOONDOOBOO SOUP or Spicy Soft Tofu Soup with Vegetables & Dried Shrimp was very spicy with very little bits of tofu. The JAP CHAE or Sweet Marinated Glass Noodles with Cooked Vegetables was very bland. Did not like the Kim Chi fried rice at all, but my party thought it was alright. Good place to indulge. Well, the food was fine considering it is an AYCE kbbq joint. The staff seemed a bit overworked, a few of the items we ordered were forgotten about and it took about 30 mins for us to get the dipping sauces for the meats. All of the staff is extremely friendly though! This is a great spot for college students looking for a night out or someone looking to stuff themself. The only real complaint about this spot is that everything is literally covered in a film of grease. The walls, the floor, the ceiling, you name it.
