I love Sun Nong Dan. It's all about the giant pot of Galbi Jjim ribs. The beef ribs are so good and they are marinated perfectly in a giant pot of sweet oil, potatoes, and peppers. They bring it out with a giant pile of cheese and melt it on top with blow torchers, which is always a crowd pleaser. The pickled side dishes are great. My girl got some mochi soup which was way more than we needed, but I know she enjoyed it. There is often a wait, but the staff is friendly. It's always a very high energy environment. As a Korean, I rarely eat Korean food in the SGV. It's just not as good as Ktown LA or Buena Park. But sometimes you gotta get what you can get. The food at SND is 3.5 stars. The entrees and banchan are oil-ier and thicker (the sauces) than I'm used to, so the food feels heavy and not the highest quality. But big thank you to our server Tim. He was so sweet and helpful. Ordered takeout through Uber Eats and arrived a little later than the estimated pickup time. Unfortunately, the pickup experience was extremely disappointing. The employee that was manning the front, Winter, was apathetic and unhelpful from the moment we walked in. He did not greet or acknowledge us when we arrived. After seeing us waiting at the front, he walked into the kitchen and took his sweet time getting to us. When he finally came back, he asked for the order name, told us we would have to wait, and then left us standing there for another 20 minutes with no updates. And it wasn't even rush hour yet btw. After waiting, my sister went up to ask how much longer it would be. He didn't respond and simply stared at her with a blank expression. At that point, my sister ended up looking through the pickup bags herself and found our order sitting there among the other completed pickup orders. We had been waiting this whole time for a pick-up order that was already ready. And it was right in front of him too! What frustrated us most wasn't the wait, but it was the complete lack of communication and basic customer service. There was no apology, no explanation, and not even a goodbye when we left. We ordered one Beef Bone Broth with Brisket and one large Galbi Tang for a family of five, and we were all completely stuffed with plenty left over for at least two more meals. The portion sizes here are massive and definitely worth sharing. The bone broth was lightly seasoned, which I actually appreciated since it allowed us to customize the flavor. Adding a little salt and black pepper gave the soup more depth and really brought everything together. This is one of my absolute favorite Korean comfort foods, and I think this location does it perfectly. They also offer one complimentary soup refill, with additional refills available for $4. Servers were busy handling other customers so it took a while for them to get our order but they were quick with giving us banchan to start off. Adjusted the salt and pepper to my liking. The oxtail meat came in a variety of sizes and they fell right off the bone. We were a big crowd so had to split our large orders to one per table, it was a bit unusual in terms of timing as half our table ordered first and got rice first but we got our orders at the same time except rice was late (after the fire show). It didn't look super busy, they have plenty of tables available despite people waiting in the front, we came for a 5:30pm dinner so only a couple tables were full, however, we had to continuously flag someone to help us. At 6:30pm when the crowd really picked up, service was harder to get. The food was just as delicious, our side ordered nonspicy but somehow my kid found a few beef pieces spit as there was red pepper flakes, I don't remember it being on the nonspicy version. The banchan and rice were great with the meat, I think the nonspicy is much sweeter but I can taste the beef and sauce more since with the spicy version all I feel is pain. Mini company event brought me here on a lunch on a Friday and this place continues to not disappoint. We ordered the galbi jim with extra rice cakes and cheese and 7 individual soup orders along with some dumplings. Personally a regular, now the co-workers were all new and never been here before are already talking about coming back lol. Galbi Jim - still amazing, ordered at level one spice, groundbreaking portion as usual and everything was fresh, tender, and bursting with flavor. I personally ordered the Teuk Galbi something soup and with a bit of sesame sauce and salt was a meal in itself. Soup broth is just right hiding the rice noodles, an assortment of onions and tender mouthwatering slabs of rib. The ambiance in here is lively and moderately loud when it's a full house. Ample seating - never have to wait too long and tons of parking. Our server that greeted and took care of us was Alex this run. Alex treated our group like VIPs and just earn this place 5 new regulars as my group was expressing regret not coming here sooner. Alex made the entire experience smooth like a mini vacation rather than just any old restaurant. Will be coming back for lunch also from now on. Still a regular here but usually late night/early morning with Vic and Cenna taking care of us. This time, however, my work group decided to meet here for our team lunch on Friday coming from as far as the valley and Orange County. Luckily, Alex who usually works nights, happened to be pulled in for lunch and he took phenomenal care of us. We had seven people and the place was half full with only a few servers and he didn't miss a beat. We shared a galbijjim and everyone got a variety of individual soups. I've been to sun nong dan a few times and I really enjoy it! This most recent time, we got the galbi jjim with cheese on top - so good! It's so yummy with purple or white rice. This was a disappointing experience from start to finish. We sat for 10 minutes unattended. Like others have mentioned service is very slow. Both Sam, a middle aged Korean lady I assume is a manager, and Winter, a Korean man who clearly didn't want to be there, were dismissive and completely avoided our table yet served other tables that came after us. The restaurant was pretty empty so it was even more obvious they didn't want to serve us. The biggest issue was finding a piece of hair in my oxtail soup. When I brought it up, I was told it was "part of it". They offered a replacement reluctantly and by that point I had already lost my appetite couldn't trust I wouldn't find another piece of hair since it's "part of it". Recently went to this Sun Nong Dan location as it's the closest to me! Well lit, clean and plenty of staff support, at least that's what it seemed like, but it was more bussers than server I think. We were seated in the center aisle and I couldn't help but wonder if that's why our service was lacking. After being seated, we had to flag down staff everytime from taking our order, to asking for to-go containers, to asking for the bill. On top of that, it almost seemed like our table was just not in sight for any servers so it would take a long minute of us raising our hand for someone to notice. We even had to just get up and get somethings ourselves. Onto the food: The soups here are amazing. All the ones we tried (bone broth and spicy) were soothing, good portion of toppings, and just hitting on those rainy days. We also of course ordered the infamous braised short ribs (no cheese), and compared to other times/locations I've had it, this time lacked a bit. The meat was tender, but the pieces were cut so uneven and a good amount of bone pieces that barely had meat on them. The rice cakes and potatoes were too soft, where the potatoes were melding into mash potatoes in the sauce. I also personally wish there was more sauce this time. I would still consider dining here cause it's the closest location to me, but some things to be mindful of and hope my next visit is more on par to the other locations! read more

Nice place with great korean cuisine! The beef galbi jim is a must try at this place. A medium one can easily feed 3 or 4 people. It comes with beef ribs, potatoes, carrots, green onions, white onions, rice cakes, and a sweet and spicy sauce. The cheese is optional, but highly recommended. When the dish comes out, they take a blowtorch and melt the cheese down. The dish also comes bubbling hot, so be careful to take your time eating it as to not accidentally burn your tongue haha. The beef ribs are tender, and have just the right amount of chew to it. The veggies are tender and the sweet and spicy sauce binds the whole dish together. Comes with your choice of purple or white rice. I also tried the oxtail sullung tang, which was very comforting. The noodles were soft and the meat was tender. The bone broth was very cozy and had a nice beefy flavor to it. Oddly reminds me of vietnamese congee. Service was pretty good, despite it being so busy when I came to dine at this location. We ordered the large #25 Koh Galbi Jjim ($119.99), which contains braised beef short ribs, back ribs, and oxtail. We opted for the soy sauce because our son was with us, and the staff recommended it to avoid the food being too spicy for him. I considered ordering extra rice cakes, but was told they are included, so we skipped it. We added cheese ($8) and they made a show of it by melting it with a torch - quite the photogenic moment! The meat was excellent and very tender, and the soy marinade was a nice, sweet flavor that everyone in our party enjoyed. Our son especially loved the gooey cheese mixed with his meat, carrots, and potatoes. The large portion was more than enough for the three of us, with plenty of leftovers. I even enjoyed it as leftovers for the next two days - it's great in a taco! I'm leaning towards a 4-star rating, as the food was excellent, despite the somewhat high price. However, the service was definitely a problem. With better service, this place would easily be a 5-star experience. Didn't even know there was Sun Nong Dan located in San Gabriel until my friend called for a dinner here. Since our other two friends hadn't been to Sun Nong Dan before, of course we had to get the galbi jjim. So I actually had this at the Rowland Heights location and wasn't impressed. But this galbi jjim actually suited my taste palette. I don't know what it was, but this really was significantly better. Perfect blend of savory and sweet! Also had the Galbi Tang (the beef short rib soup). This is where I knew it was vastly different than the Rowland Heights location, because it actually came with mushrooms and green onions and was already perfectly salted. Honestly, I would come here just for this since it's such a light meal. Service is as what you would expect of any Asian place. But they are very responsive when you flag them down. Parking does kinda suck here, especially during prime time hours. Even the fact that it is a huge parking lot doesn't mean much. This place is the best because it doesn't matter when you're craving SND; they're always open! The whole ambiance in addition to the delicious food sums up to a satisfying comfort meal. I usually come here once a month and for good reason. Although it usually gets busy around dinner time ~1900, there's always plenty of seating and I typically get helped pretty quickly. It's definitely on the pricier side around a hundred or something like that but the portion is huge and meant to be shared between several people. My co-workers and I love it so much it has made it to our rotation for lunch outing. They do have good soup but I always come for their Galbi Jjim. The Galbi Jjim comes in a medium or large size. The large size feed five people with extras to take home. We did add extra meats and rice cake. Galbi Jjim is marinated prime ribs in a secret Galbi sauce cooked with potatoes, green onions, carrots, onions, and rice cake sticks. You can also add cheese that they melt in front of you. This dish with their purple rice is so delicious. I can eat this every day. I love the potatoes in it, it just fall apart with the delicious flavors. The service is good.
