Here's the updated review with the remodel mentioned naturally near the beginning. Stopped by Young Dong Tofu House in San Gabriel to give this newer Korean spot a try, and I left with mixed feelings. It's been a few years since my last visit, and they did a complete remodel. The restaurant looks completely different now with a clean, modern look that feels much more updated than before. While the service could use some improvement, the food was definitely the highlight of the meal. We ordered the galbi and seafood tofu soup combo, the bulgogi and seafood tofu soup combo, and the new cold noodle. The galbi came with six pieces and was cooked perfectly. It was tender, flavorful, and paired well with the seafood tofu soup. The combo also came with four banchan: bean sprouts with sesame oil, kimchi cucumber, kimchi, and seaweed. Everything was fresh and complemented the meal nicely. The bulgogi and seafood tofu soup combo was just as satisfying. The bulgogi was well seasoned, and the tofu soup had plenty of seafood with a rich, comforting broth. We also tried the new cold noodle, which came in an icy chicken broth with shredded chicken and buckwheat noodles. The owner recommended adding a little vinegar, and it completely brought the dish together. It added just the right amount of brightness, and the broth became incredibly refreshing. It ended up being one of my favorite dishes of the meal. The food here is honestly the reason to visit. It's very close to the quality you would find in Koreatown, but without having to deal with the headache of Koreatown parking. That's a huge plus if you're in the SGV. The ambiance is modern, clean, and comfortable. Even during our visit, it wasn't overly loud, and we were able to have a normal conversation throughout the meal. Service was just okay. The staff seemed overworked, and it looked like they could have used more help. The one server who came around to refill our banchan was incredibly sweet and friendly, and we really appreciated her attentiveness. Unfortunately, everyone else, including the owners, came across as a bit short with customers and not particularly welcoming. It didn't ruin the meal, but it was noticeable. Parking was easy thanks to the large free parking lot shared with the other restaurants and 168 Market, making it much more convenient than trying to find parking in Koreatown. Overall, I'd come back for the food. If you're looking for solid Korean comfort food in the SGV without making the drive to K-town, Young Dong Tofu House is definitely worth checking out. The remodel gave the restaurant a fresh new look, and hopefully as they settle in and add more staff, the service experience will improve because the kitchen is already doing a great job. read more

This place has a small vegetarian friendly section. They actually use mushroom broth and they have vegetarian dumplings. Which is good for my aunt. I got the combo with galbi and tofu soup. When yoy vet the combo, the tofu soup is smaller which is good cause i cant finish a large one. I really liked their soy garlic chicken but wished it had large pieces of garlic in it. My favorite banchan would be the seaweed and cucumbers. Im glad they refill it for you. But fir some reason they would go around with the banchan cart and fill everyone else but ours. I question if this location is under new ownership because the food is significantly better than I remembered, honestly on par with the Young Dong location in Chino Hills. It made me do a double take after not visiting for a while! A few things worth noting: - The entire staff is incredibly friendly and efficient, making the whole experience feel warm and welcoming. - Thoroughly enjoyed all the banchan. Take advantage of the complimentary refills! I liked the kimchi so much that I bought a large container to-go. I've been eating it daily ever since. It's on the sweeter side, not totally tart. Don't sleep on the raw squid either! - They've introduced two naengmyun options, one spicy and one non-spicy, just in time for summer. We tried the non-spicy version and my family enjoyed it. They use a chicken broth base and it was light, refreshing, and surprisingly addictive. - I love that they offer a beef and octopus soondubu (generous portion of octopus!). There's always a wait here for dinner, so I recommend coming early. Hubs & I have become really big fans of their Curry Chicken / Pork Katsu. We didn't realize what a big portion this would be the first time we ordered it, but it's definitely shareable or you can do what we do: add a combo for extra food to take home for leftovers =P I do also wish they added more broth/water to their tofu soup because it always seems so dry after they bring it out. I'm not sure why I have not done a review for this restaurant because it's literally my FAVORITE go-to restaurant! My family has been coming here since the pandemic days when they had the tables outside and met a server named Valente. He's always been so amazing with us and his service as well as other staff here has been phenomenal. It's always nice coming over here for more than 5 years and seen this place get renovated and upgraded and we've loved it even more now! Happily Valente is still here to greet us with a smile and give us an amazing service like today when my sister and I came for lunch. The food is ALWAYS amazing! I love getting the hot stone bibimbap and their spicy tofu soup! The soup is great and three different kinds of rice to choose from. Purple, white and brown. This is such a cool spot to grab dinner. It was 4 of us and we got sat relatively quickly. The only thing was we had to wave down the staff to pay our bill and it took a bit of time. I haven't been to Young Dong Tofu House in a very long time. Back then I felt that the restaurant is dirty and the quality wasn't good. Ever since they did the renovation, I feel that the place is lively. I normally visit another tofu house but the other place's quality went down so I decided to try YDTH again. I order tofu soup with clams medium spicy. I liked how flavorful the soup was. I also added egg in the beginning. Side dishes are good but sadly no mashed potato. On this particular day, I was craving it immensely and decided to treat myself to a solo lunch. I came in around 2 p.m. just in time for the lunch special, and there were plenty of tables available, which made for a nice relaxed atmosphere. It's a clean contemporary table, booth and bench setup. Wifey and I had the Kimchi Beef Tofu soup, extra spicy, and the Galbi. We liked the cucumber and Napa Ban Chan the best. It gets refilled by an attended moving cart if you wish. The beef was a little chewy and you need a knife or use your hands to tear the meat off the bones. I came here for an early dinner around 3pm during a weekend. Surprisingly, there was no wait and we were seated immediately. We were a party of eight at this restaurant we really like. We ordered several combination meals and a couple of Main dishes to share. An order of BBQ beef rib and tofu combo, a seafood soup and bulgogi combo, pork dumpling combo with bulgogi and Stone pot, an oyster soup and brown rice combo with beef, tofu soup with katsu fried pork chop. I have been a loyal, consistent customer of Young Dong Tofu House for over five years. If you look at my history, I even posted a glowing 4-star review years ago calling this my "favorite place." Sadly, after today's appalling experience, I will never be returning, and I am officially retracting my previous recommendation. The decline of this establishment can be summed up in two words: The Service. Specifically, there is a new (or at least new to me) Asian waitress with blonde hair who apparently thinks her job description includes scolding paying customers like she's their mother. I know the rhythm of this place they often lag 20-40 minutes between serving different people at the same table. so you eat alone even though you order together.. To avoid eating separately, I specifically requested: "Please bring all the food at once." Simple, right? Instead, they dropped the white rice and side dishes and then disappeared. I tried calling the waiters but they don't make eye contact and keep moving. By the time the actual entrees arrived, the rice was stone cold. When I politely asked the busboy who was actually the only helpful person there to replace the cold rice, this blonde asian waitress swooped in to scold me. She told me it was my fault, that I should have said something sooner, and was incredibly condescending. Since when do I pay to be yelled at by a random asian blonde waitress? It gets worse. The atmosphere became incredibly uncomfortable when I witnessed this same blonde asian waitress physically smack another male employee in the lower back/backside close to the butt area in the middle of the dining room. It was loud, it was completely inappropriate, and frankly, it looked like workplace sexual harassment happening right in front of the customers. It is deeply "weird" and unprofessional to witness staff members hitting each other while you're trying to enjoy a meal. and then they serve you food with the same hands To cap off the night, I asked for more of my favorite side dish. The kind busboy brought me extra, but this blonde asian waitress decided to yell at him too for doing that. I went on a Saturday at 6pm and there was already a huge line where you write your name down on a piece of a paper. I think it took around 45 minutes to get seated. The menu is just like most tofu soup places: tofu soups, combinations and a few non tofu soup dishes. I got their combination seafood beef soup spicy and my husband got the katsu dinner combo with mild dumpling tofu soup. The spicy soondooboo was medium spice to me, it looks really red but not really that spicy. It was the perfect amount of heat for me. My husband got the mild version and he even said he could handle some of my spicy soup. He also enjoyed the pork katsu and it was surprisingly really crispy. The portion size was perfect for him with katsu and a side of a smaller tofu soup. The tofu soups were sooo delicious. Meat was really tender and everything was so fresh. My combination had 3 shrimps and lots of clams inside. My husbands smaller dumpling tofu soups even had a lot of dumplings in it. And for their side dishes: kimchi!! So fresh and good! You know they're doing something right because they have survived the pandemic, multiple remodels and still has people waiting outside every weekend! They share the same lot as the 168 Market and plenty of other popular stores. Be prepared to wait, there's always a line out the door and a full waitlist. We waited maybe 30 minutes before we got called and seated. The staff always seem to be rushing around trying to cater to all the tables. They took our order and immediately served us our banchan. The kimchi was my absolute favorite. It's not really spicy and had a fishy taste which I liked. The tofu soup came out super fast, I got the pork dumpling and beef mild. It wasn't spicy at all but I still needed occasional sips of water. I really liked how they have someone bring a cart over to refill banchans often. It was really hard to flag someone down. We asked this one person multiple times to grab a togo box, water refill, kimchi refill, and nothing. He was either too busy or just completely ignored us. We also had to ask multiple times for them to check on our katsu. It finally came when we already finished most of our food. The soups were fine -- one with clams and one with beef & seafood-- but the bowls were quite a bit smaller than other restaurants we've been to. The fish was good but also smaller than average. The real bad dish was the pork katsu. The quality of the pork was horrible, actually inedible. As you can see in the picture, it was riddled with cartilage. The banchan was also mediocre. We waited maybe 10-15 minutes before getting seated. The staff were very attentive and checked in on us. The interior is cute and relaxed for a chill date night which I was on. Normally when I go to Tofu houses, I get the intestine tofu. They didn't have it here so I got the Oyster tofu and my girlfriend got the clam tofu, both mild. The soups were good but I wish there was more flavor in them. Their mild tasted plain leveled as well, no spice felt at all. I'm going to have to try medium next. Located inside the plaza with 168 market, Yogurtland, and Pizza hut. Shared parking lot with a lot of places to park. They do get extremely busy, so be prepared to wait. I haven't returned to this location in over 10 years. A lot has changed on the inside. They have redesigned their booths and tables. It looks pretty modern and I believe the new layout has opened up even more tables for guests than before. The price of the meal is a little pricey, but the flavor is great! Something happened with our order that it didnt put into the system. They apologized, but we were enjoying each other's company so it didnt really seem that long after we ordered that they made the connection. I ordered the galbi ribs and the marinated dumpling appetizer. The galbi ribs were sizzling hot and they were cut into big enough pieces to share. The marinated dumpling flavor was 7/10 but the texture was a 5/10. I thought it could use a little more crisp, but I am not sure if it was meant to be steamed or stir fried a little bit. If its not supposed to be crispy, then it is a 7/10. Some parts didnt feel fully steamed. If you ordered their barley tea, make sure you flag one of the staff members down to ask for a refill. Theyre busy and the cups are hard to see if we needed refills. They also have 2 gender neutral restrooms in the back. Be careful because there are some twists and turns with a decline/incline floor. I can't believe it took me so long to come across this tofu house!!! This is hands down the best sundubu jjigae I've ever tried. I got the kimchi beef flavor and had to return again after a week because I couldn't stop thinking about it. Their banchan is super flavorful, ranging from cucumbers, kimchi, beansprouts, seaweed, and more. Plus, the staff has a banchan cart so they can refill your banchan at your table -- it's great not to have to wait for the refills!
