Came here a couple months ago before the new changes and I loved the food. There were lots of items that were $3.99. Of course, you wouldn't get a large amount for that price, but you could try a little bit of everything, which is a great plus. My friend and I decided to come back for a few bites and drinks and we noticed the menu change. There are less than 5 items on the menu that are $3.99. Majority of the items are $10+. My friend and I ordered the Genius Poke ($7.99) and the loco moco ($13.99). Both were delicious, but I wouldn't say worth the price (at least for the moco). They also didn't have the usual, creative cocktails any more, which is too bad. Our server was alright. She was good at doing the usual service, but her attitude said otherwise. Can't say I like the new changes. We were really looking forward to trying the various food the menu use to offer. Don't think we will be coming back, unfortunately. read more

We had an UYE here at Genius Lounge on Wednesday. I've seen this place before, so I had no trouble finding it. It was, on the other hand, difficult for a few other people to find this place. It's on Lewers; leeward side on a three story walk up, there's lost of lights up there that you can't miss. This place is really cute. As I told Chad Y., "It's like Pane & Vino but without the terrible service." Very hip, candle-lit, velvety draped, jazzy music-ish. Totally a place to take a date and make like you are classier than you actually are (Yes, people. I know you've all pulled out all the puni stops on dates.) We sat on the lanai overlooking the metered parking lot, a great place for people watching and checking to see if the meter-maid is coming. I, having temporarily quit drinking and am dieting, was limited to a few options there. But if I were drinking, those sake's were huge and cheap during their 6-8 Happy Hour (FIVE DOLLARS!). Edamame and waters were my choices for the evening. The Edamame ($4.50) was grilled and undercooked. Too firm and it needed to be dressed! Hey Genius Lounge, ever heard of Ponzu? I heard mixed reactions to other people's food choices. But one thing was for certain, the drinks were cheap and enjoyable (ugh. I hate you, sobriety.) Genius Lounge is truly a hidden gem in Waikiki. I LOVE this place!!! Happy hour is great here with $5 sake (and not crap sake either). I haven't tried any of the food that I didn't like, portions are small, but it does make up for it in flavor and uniqueness. Cream cheese poke is unusual, but if you love cream cheese you'll love this... its not really poke, its cream cheese. I also really love the chicken with yuzu, its citrusy, but a little spicy. Love that they have outdoor seating and you can watch people walking on Lewers. Metered parking directly behind the building, so be sure to bring change with you, because its 10 minutes for a quarter. read more

I know it's pretty gay from me, but this place is really cute. It's not one of those fancy Waikiki bar/restaurant but cute and cozy enough to make it worth stopping by after dinner. I must say that this place is more of bar/lounge than a restaurant although they do serve variety of foods -- mostly small plates. I believe the advantage for Genius is their extensive offering of sake drinks. I had few visitors from mainland and wanted to introduce them with sake sampler -- which priced at $10 and very good pick for Sake 101. The servers/bartenders are very attentive and nice. I didn't see any girls working there, which was a bummer. Mostly Japanese dudes. The decoration and floor layout is very nicely done. They have outdoor seating available too - although you don't see the ocean. I recommend this place if you want some down-to-earth, chillaxing time with your love one and/or friends to spend quality time chatting and enjoying the fine Waikiki nights. read more

Waikiki Japanese lounge bar that has nice and very relaxing place. if you want to go to this place, you will have to find it in small ally with the stairs to go to 2nd floor. When you first walk into the step there is door mat with cute dog picture on the floor. it has low lighting and indoor and outdoor seating. i think it's a good place to chill and have a nice conversation. they also have food and their food is great. since its more of Japanese style the portions are not as big as some other place i been to but flavor of the food is awesome. i go to this place quite often and drink their draft beer in the giant frosty mug. when you first pour the beer inside you will see ice floating from cup being frozen. over all price isn't so bad and i would like to come to place at least once if you haven't tried before. read more

The bartenders are real friendly and fun. We even got to take a shot with one of them! The ambiance is cool and trendy. I love that they have a balcony on both sides of the room. They are located on the 3rd floor, so is nice to have a view of the streets without people looking in or at you! This place is located in Waikiki, so you know parking isn't the best. The entrance is hidden from the streets, so you will need to roam the alleys and explore every nook and cranny to find this place! But once found, you'll be real glad that you did! Or you can just find Genius Outfitters and take the stairs located in the right side of the store! Went for the late night happy hour and sat at the bar on 6/22. Bartender was incredibly rude. I made a joke and he said he could no longer serve me alcohol, so I had to move tables and sit somewhere else in the restaurant. I've never been to a restaurant where someone wouldn't serve me based on a personal grudge. Other than that, food was tasty, and prices were fair. read more

So let me start with the cons: I would recommend to come here during happy hour if you want to grab food. We made the mistake of coming here past happy hour. Portions are pretty tiny for what you pay. The poke was delicious but there was a lot more onions than ahi on the dish. I also ordered the salmon miso gratin, very cheesy and delicious, but overpriced at $15. It's also a bit inconvenient that they split 2 checks maximum for big parties. What I did love about this place is that the server was friendly and helpful. Not to mention, it was quite crowded that day and it seemed like he was the only one on the floor that night. Can handle. The Loco Moco Pizza is really good and worth a try. It's an interesting twist on Loco Moco. If you like Loco Moco and you like pizza then you definitely should try this! This hidden gem is great for a quiet night out, or the beginning of a crazy one. Genius Lounge is on Lewers, but enough steps away from the noisier bars to set itself apart. The side stars seemed to be the only way to this upstairs lounge...I found myself wondering if it was handicap accessible for some reason.... Plenty of candles and dimmer lights make for great mood lighting and the hard furniture and nice decor make it easy to relax. The waiter tended to hover a bit, but was very polite and service was speedy. I tried a tasty mixed drink first, but really wish that I'd started with the sake samplers I drank for the rest of the night. $11 for pre-chosen samplers of 3 different sakes meant that I refined my pallet and got a good buzz going at the same time. While on Oahu for a few days last month I wanted to check out a bar that was not to busy. I looked up recent Yelp reviews, and found the Genius Lounge having good ratings. So we decided to check it out. I have to admit it took us a little while to find the place. But we were able to get a good parking space in a private lot on Lewers St, and the guy who ran the lot showed us where the Genius Lounge was at. We went there on a Wednesday night after eating dinner at another location, so it wasn't busy at all. There were several seats open at the bar so we sat there. I liked the fact that there are two open balconies with tables to sit at. The music playing was at a good level, because we could carry on a conversation without having to shout like at some other night spots. They also had a couple of tv's with sports on, which is perfect for those who can't miss the big games. I decided to try a couple of the mixed sake drinks, which tasted really good! The bartenders are very friendly and helped me decide on what to have. My only regret was having dinner before going there, as I was told by other patrons that the food is excellent. Next trip there I'm going on an empty stomach so I can try some of the food. None the less I liked the laid back atmosphere, and the personalized service. read more

Like a true Yelper, I went to two new places on my birthday - woohoo!! I've set a record for myself on most drink specials in one afternoon and evening. 6-8 PM at Genius Lounge was great. Food and drinks: Tried the antipasto, and four cheese pizza with pesto. The antipasto was interesting... assorted veggies and cheese with an Italian type dressing - 3 stars. The four cheese pizza was pretty good, I really loved the pesto touch - 4 stars. And the trouble with having an afternoon and evening full of drink specials... I can't remember the name of that awesome drink I had. It was a mixed drink with sake, and Chambord. You've got to try, it's a 5 star rating in my books. Another great thing about Genius Lounge was the service. We had excellent service, and the waiter reserved a whole other table next to us even though my whole party hadn't arrived yet. Very friendly and efficient guy. 5 stars for service. Ambience: 5 stars. I loved the setting - super mellow and not too loud. You can choose indoor or outdoor seating. Good timing though because they had a special $3.99 menu (everyday starting at 6pm)! There were a lot of options on that menu, ranging from appetizers all the way to dessert. Of course for the main entrees the dishes aren't a full meal but it was still a steal. I mean come on, for NY steak? Garlic shrimp? Fresh oyster? You may want to get there early though as most of the dishes with starch and beef were out (we did go late, around 11pm). The Genius bar belongs to the same owner as the Genius Outfitter below, and the Pineapple County store half a block away. You have to go up the stairs on the side of the store to find yourself in a cute little bar with hip decor. There are two lanais on each side of the bar, so you will have all the room you want to experience the warm nights of Waikiki first hand. The liquor menu is mainly Sake, with an excellent selection, but the first page of the menu is all cocktails and shots, all super good (except for the Razztini, which tastes like cough syrup to me, but it's personal :) Their B52 is DA BOMB. To go with all this spirit, they have excellent Japanese food. And top it all off with a warm a la mode banana bread. YUMMY!! read more

I finally had a chance to eat (more like drink) here! I work a half block away from here and watched it get built but since it opens at 6:00 and I am usually getting the hell out of Waikiki at 5:00 I never had a chance. Happy hour(s) are 6:00 to 8:00 with half price beer, wine and sake. The house sake was very good. We ate the following: Karaage (fried chicken) = very crisp yet moist inside. No sauce, just a salt and pepper dip. Excellent! Pumpkin with Bacon = Kobocha with cripsy/tasty bacon. Winner Asparagus with Bacon = not your typical asuparabekon with bacon wrapped around asparagus spear. This was a bit like the pumpkin bacon but in a tomato sauce and that incredible bacon. koroke = lots of meat inside - cooked right included a tomato sauce. Prosciutto Mellon Cheese = very tasty prosciutto. would order this again. Tsukemono = lame Service was really good. It looks like a couple of middle aged Japanese office workers said "Screw it. Let's go to Hawaii and start a restaurant." They were on it! Just kind of strange to see that many older Japanese dudes waiting tables. The place as packed by the time we left with mostly Japanese travel agents that work in Waikiki (a sure sign of good food and service). I will be going back. read more

WHEREAS this establishment, contrary to its self-proclaimed status as a "sake bar & grill," also serves liquor; and WHEREAS the liquors served include Black Label, Macallan 18, and Yamazaki (the times are indeed relaxing and Suntory); and WHEREAS the appetizers are delicious, albeit small, and reasonably priced; and WHEREAS an order of whiskey on the rocks will result in a crystal berg large enough to sink the Titanic in a glorious sea of dark amber; and WHEREAS one can order a draft beer (Kirin or Bud Light) served in an ice-cold stein or a house sangria for $2.50 during happy hour (6-8pm nightly); and WHEREAS the staff of Genius Lounge are so affable that they should rename the establishment Congenial Lounge; and WHEREAS it is situated in close proximity to my hotel; NOW, THEREFORE, I, George Y., declare Genius Lounge my favorite place for cocktails and dreams and appetizers. Genius Lounge is like a dive bar in Waikiki... but minus the obnoxious military bros. And minus the grungy, old white bartender with an Ed Hardy T-Shirt. And minus the self-made, shoddy decor. And minus the disease-infested, pee-smelling bathroom. What's left? Cheap prices (they have a happy hour menu) and a back alley location in Waiks. Food was so-so. Lots of cheese items, including cheese-tofu. It tastes like an Atomic Bomb of cheddar exploded in your mouth. Clean place, nice bar, and classy crowd. ugh! i cannot for the life of me remember the name of the bartender that was super friendly. we met him randomly at a wedding where he was working as a waiter.. totally cool guy and super sweet. anthony? tony? something of that sort. really cute spot located on the second story of some shops near our condo at the aloha towers. nice open air patio with strung xmas lights to give some ambiance. they have a legit list of sakes -- ranging from super expensive and high quality to your standard types. looks like the food was pretty yummy too but we were there to drink our waiter and friend was the one who asked us to stop by since he was working there.. ugh! hapa, cute, about 5'8".. haha.. why can't i remember his name!! they have this amazing espresso vodka that is delicious and smooth chilled. we also had some junmai ginjo unfiltered sake that was super tasty. would definitely come back even though our friend is supposed to be leaving for japan soon. really grateful that he hit us up and recommended this joint! seems like a cool place to rewind and chat it up with good friends. read more

Went here with a group of friends and we sat inside. The place was hot, there was an AC but I'm not sure if it was on or not, we were sitting and I was getting sweaty. I read a review that the ham and cheese plate was $13 which I wanted to try out but it is actually $16. I wanted to share it with some of the ppl but they weren't feeling it so I didn't order it. I finally settled on the Ja-Ja mein because I didn't know what else to order and the server wasn't very helpful. The mein was okay, nothing too memorable about it. None of us have been there before so we didn't know what they specialized in. One of my friends wanted some sake. The server was kind of rude and said, which one? We specialize in sake and have over 50 blablabla sakes in a condescending voice. I tuned him out after that because this was a double birthday celebration (me being one of them) and I didn't want to get out of my face about things that night. So for the price, the portion of the dishes and the atmosphere, I would rather have gone somewhere else where the service is better and where I'm paying for something good to put in my mouth. Don't get me wrong, I'm not about big portions since I can't eat that much - I'm more of a sampler, but if you want to charge me $10-13 for a plate of ramen, it better be memorable in some small way. read more

This was my first time here but I can already say that I like it here! :) This place is tucked away right next door to my favorite store 'Pineapple County.' One of my friends goes here often and said this place was good. Boy, was he right! And to my surprise, I know someone who works here. Though I haven't seen him for awhile ... it was really nice to see him again. The atmosphere here is really nice. We all sat outside on the lanai. This place is a nice place to go to with a group of your friends to have drinks and talk story. I didn't get to try any of their food items but I did have their sake sampler. This place had lots of Japanese people coming in and out. So if you are looking to pick up Asian chicks/guys this is the place to come and get some numbers. (Ha-ha!) I know many locals, myself included avoid Waikiki at all costs. Aside from the traffic, crazy cabbies, rowdy drunks, street walkers, a little star called the Genius Lounge shines. Tucked away above a little boutique shop, Genius Outfitters, the eclectic Genius Lounge thrives. Although the menu reflects Japanese flavor, the decor reminds me of a So. Cal. style, but sitting on the balcony staring at the brick wall of the building reminded me of my hotel window in NYC. Music in the background was at a volume that could be enjoyed while maintaining conversation with friends (geez, i must be getting old). The crowd was even mix of tourists and locals. Service is great, everyone is friendly and accomodating. They treated us as if we were friends. We got there on the tail end of happy hour yet, so it was crowded on the balcony, but they sat us down at an inside table and took our orders before happy hour ended....awesome. About 15 mins later, they cleared a table and sat us down on the balcony. Being primarily a sake bar, they have a wide variety drinks. Specialty cocktails using sake such as Momo (like a screwdriver) and Sensitive Richie (like a Cosmo) were great. As mentioned by many other fellow yelpers, the sauteed kabocha w/ bacon was a delicious contrast of sweet (pumpkin) & salty (bacon) - simple yet great. Loco Mocos are not your traditional local brown gravy with hamburger patty. Hamburger patty is coated with a panko and covered with a demi glaze brown gravy. Pricing is unusual, things that you expect to be cheaper are not, and things that should be pricier are less....hmm, not sure who decided on the pricing but I found it strange that ahi poke ($8) was cheaper than kabocha & bacon ($10). Gelato with whip and a small strawberry was a nice finish to a great visit to this genius of a lounge. read more

Hmmmm, where to start.... So the SO and I decided to visit Genius Lounge the other night. I work in the coordination business and I've set up some magazine and TV photo shoot appointments here, but never actually got to check the place out. One of my fellow coordinators (thank you, btw!) passed on a $100.00 gift certificate that was received from one of the owners during one of our shoots, so hey, free meal/drinks; no excuse NOT to try it! We got there around 9:30pm (we missed happy hour due to babysitter ordeals--the price of being a parent) and it was pretty steady, but not busy enough for us not to find a seat. The perfect one right on the balcony (loved the ambiance!) seemed to be waiting for us! There were a few servers there, but besides the girl who gave us our menus and waters, no one bothered with us (boo :( ) except Hiroshi, who I later learned was one of the few owners. He was SUPER nice and helpful. He even helped me get over my fear of sake, and believe me, I previously hated sake! He recommended that I start with the house sake (which was actually really good) and poured it into a bigger container (they usually just have it in one cup for an individual to drink) so my husband and I could share. After liking it, I got brave and Hiroshi then recommended the Genius sampler which was also REALLY good. I liked the middle selection (can't remember the name) the best, so I ordered a glass of just that one after I finished my sampler. And yes, I got pretty drunk that night. Now to the food.... Dun, dun, dunnnnn. Hiroshi emphasized that their establishment was a bar and the food's purpose was to be a side to the drinks. The husband and I decided that he drove this point because he was exactly right. The food was... bleh. I know previous reviews raved about the food, but to warn future yelpers, it isn't great. I mean, it isn't bad, but it's precisely what Hiroshi said: it's a SIDE to the drinks. -Cream Cheese Poke: Just cubes of cream cheese with a little sauce (shoyu and something else probably) with green onions. Nothing special. -Ripe Tomato & Mozzarella something with something, something (can't remember the whole name): Just slices of tomato and mozzarella with 2 sauces: pesto and shoyu-wasabi. The slices of cheese and tomato were too thick for my liking, and the sauces were just... sauces. Again, nothing special. -Pumpkin & Bacon: Kabocha with thick pieces of bacon and a light sauce... that's it. -Citrus Pepper Chicken: This was probably my favorite, only because of seasoning (it's served in a little dish on the side of the chicken). The seasoning was extremely salty and tasted kind of like a calamansi. That's not a bad thing though, because I am a fan of salt. The spice kicks in right at the end, and it's pretty spicy, but in a way where you can still taste other flavors. The chicken was unfortunately just okay. My husband liked that the skin was kind of crispy, but I thought it was dry and hard to pull apart. I was pretty disappointed in the food and REALLY wanted to like it so we ordered a pasta. At that time it was really busy and the wait took forever and a day, so we cancelled it and just ordered more drinks. Hiroshi was really apologetic and he is the main reason I am giving Genius Lounge 4 stars besides the ambiance (fyi, if you aren't familiar with being surrounded by Japanese tourists and Japanese people who live here, be prepared. Pretty much everyone there at the beginning of the night and then 90% of clientele at the end of the night were native Japanese speakers). Oh, and we ordered a bunch of drinks and a good amount of food, and our bill came out to only $102! I felt bad about paying with pretty much just the gift certificate, so I tipped a whole bunch, too. As others have pointed out this place is definitely past its prime. The winding entrance kind of sts the scene. Then you get inside and am reminded of the Hideaway. And the blocked up grand entrance from the first floor and the signs describing what is not allowed make you wonder...why am I here? Perhaps the funniest thing was the idea that Chris the bartender decided to "save the foam" It turns out that the Kirin line had a kink in it so rather than allow all of that foam to go to waste he grabbed a pitcher and decided to save it so the next orders would receive previously poured beer and a fresh head. One thing I will say is that the shish-kebab was excellent. The cook was able to make the outside of the large pieces of steak caramelized while keeping the inside blood rare and they served it with potato which is unusual for a Japanese restaurant, but extremely welcome. Since I was there on payday I also got to meet their longest-term employee--Jasmine it was fun to chat about the history of the place, it has gone through many owners and the unknown origins of the name. She was able to explain why the grand entrance was blocked--when the place was built the first-floor shop and the bar had the same owner, like Tommy Bahama, but not anymore so naturally the clothing store is not keen on having bar patrons walk through the store to access the bar. by and by, probably will not be back, Genius Lounge is one of those off-the-beaten path establishments that does not really provide a compelling reason to return. it is in the chasm of mediocrity, not great and not terrible. read more

Last night I was in a bad mood. And, for the first time since I've been here, I missed New York. Specifically I missed my favorite little sake bar in New York that stays open late and always helps me forget my troubles. Then I found Genius Lounge, Honolulu's equivalent to what I used to love in New York. This place is fantastic. First of all, they are open till 2am. Yes, 2 am. The menu is really terrific, too. They have a comprehensive list of sakes by the bottle and the glass, along with a small shochu and beer menu. Our server admitted he doesn't drink sake much but was happy to send over the sake guy to us. He helped narrow down the choices, and encouraged us to try one of the flights. I usually don't like flights---just as I get used to one flavor profile I have to start all over again with another. I'd rather have one drink that lasts a while. Though I wouldn't necessarily get the flight again next time, it was helpful to see how the descriptions on the menu compared to what I tasted. They were pretty apt. And, now I have a better sense of which sake I'll get next time. There will be a next time. And that time I'll try the food (a review will follow...). read more

Ahhh this place is awesome! The atmosphere is perfect for intimate nights out with friends and the drink/food selection is amazing. The citrus pepper chicken and kim chee fried rice are delicious and I would definitely order them again. My only complaint for the fried rice was that the egg omelet was too buttery and rich so it overpowered the taste the rice. I wished they served Chu-Hi here because it would be the perfect drink for any girl's night out. read more

This place was amazing. After a long nite of shopping for gifts, my friends and I just stumbled onto this place, we decided to stop for a beer and some pupus. Waited a little while for a table but it was worth it. The waiter suggested I try Echigo beer and it was love at first sip . Our pupus were to die for. We had sashimi, kabbocha /bacon garlic sautéed and caprese . It's a quaint small place, it's situated right on lewers above a shop, entrance is on the right side go up the stairs. Another nice place to bring a date. Outside is great place to sit and people watch and get to know your company. This is a sake bar that actually has pretty decent food. Try the poké! The happy hour apps and cocktails are all pretty good. Been here at least a dozen times and there seems to always be one outside table free without a reservation (I tend to be lucky but I found this the case every time). My favorites here are the Kimchee Pasta and the Loco Moco. What's good about the Kimchee Pasta is the creamy sauce and bacon that's in it. The Kimchee adds a little spice to that, which is great! The Loco Moco is breaded and crispy and the gravy is delicious and rich! The egg always comes out just right too. What I don't like here is the natto omelette..
