Now known as PKI Sushi (formerly Genki Sushi) in Rancho Bernardo, this place is a solid spot for sushi. Decor is the same as previous management (actually, the management hasn't changed. Only the name did ) The happy hour deals are definitely worth checking out, and the service is consistently awesome...friendly and attentive. Prices are pretty much in line with what you'd expect for sushi in the area. I love that they have a good variety of rolls, and the staff is happy to customize anything you can dream up. If you have a creative idea for a roll, they'll make it happen. The only reason I didn't give five stars is that while everything is good, it's not quite mind-blowing compared to some other spots, but still a very reliable and enjoyable sushi experience. read more

Three continuous nights' dinner choice here: consistent food quality, traditional setup inside, clean and neat nothing fancy , the service depends on the waitress you got. Based on my experience, the first two nights were good, the 3rd night, got really impatient waitress, I asked her about the dish on the tv, her cold tone and her impatient face implied that I did something wrong .... The four stars go to the chef's great job on the hamachi/ salmon collars, outside crispy inside juicy, maintained freshness , I can have it every night :) the Agidashi tofu is authentic, great seasoned and lightly fried. The blue fin toro is silky and fatty ^.^ the tempura was ok good, shrimp not that fresh, and the coating was too thick for me. The cucumber salad is simple and refreshing, if you like vinaigrette taste, you will like it. The Seattle roll was not my favorite, somehow the texture and taste do not please my taste bud, acceptable . The last, I would recommend the owner to put single dinner a little far from the noise bar area, sometime the noise level can trigger my watch noise alert. Overall, this is one of my most favorite Japanese restaurants in this area. Not sure if they are working on changing the names, I would vote on the previous name Genki sushi -- matches the whole atmosphere, comfy food. read more

We had a wonderful evening for three, with Excellent sushi & nice ambience friendly staff all in all it was very good.

Busy for a Friday night but since we were a party of 2 we were quickly able to get a seat. I would definitely recommend making reservations for larger parties. Service was slow but we can tell they were busy, so I didn't dock then stars for that. Luckily we weren't in a rush. Lady who waited on us was super nice. They forgot my hot tea but looks like she forgot to put that in the system but I was okay with it, so I told her I didn't need it. Parking lot can get crowded, but the walk isn't that bad. You just can't park directly in front of the restaurant since its located in the corner of the plaza with other businesses in front blocking the view from the parking lot. It is behind Round Table and tucked away in the corner. I guess you can consider this a hidden gem since it really is hidden. Everything we tried so far is pretty tasty. We usually just get the sushi and tempura. But there is plenty for everyone to choose something to their liking. read more

This was my first visit after this place became Genki Sushi. The inside had light cosmetic remodeling, but the layout and the overall feel were almost the same as the previous establishment. They have lunch menu and lunch specials. I had Chirashi Sushi, and it had a good amount of fish (16 pcs?) for $35. Better price than having a sashimi plate with the same amount of sashimi. It came in two separate compartments: sashimi and rice. It was nicely plated, and the sashimi was fresh. The stacking containers looked old and needed some upgrade, though. Overall, the price seemed more expensive than the competitions. They have a lot of tables and relatively quiet atmosphere if you want a relaxing ambiance and enjoy conversations. read more

We wanted fusion rolls for lunch on a Friday and we got it here! Lots of people during lunch on a Friday, but there's plenty of seating. Well-curated photos and menu, which was so helpful since there was quite a selection. Our rolls were delicious. One was baked, and it had a very strong and tasty sauce. One had a light vinaigrette-style dressing, which complemented the fish beautifully. The third had a lovely balance of heat, fish, avocado, and crunch. The miso soup was one of the best ones I've had in a restaurant. They used white miso, and it was very flavorful! The right amount of tofu and wakame. Our first visit since the restaurant changed, and it was a mixed experience. The fish was fresh and the food was good overall, but service felt rushed and unfriendly. Our edamame came out after several mains, and when I asked about it, I was told it "takes longer to make than the sushi rolls," which came off a bit dismissive. The chirashi bowl had great hamachi, salmon, and scallops, but imitation crab for $35 was disappointing. Prices are fair, but the service left a lot to be desired. Not the worst, but probably not a return spot for us. read more

This is not even genki sushi anymore! It's called PKI sushi. I drove 25 mins to surprise my 11 year old son. This is his favorite restaurant from back home (Hawaii). We haven't lived there in over 5 years. He was so excited but when we got there it wasn't even genki sushi. He was devastated. I felt devastated for him. A night that was suppose to be memorable turn out to be horrible. I even called them before I made the drive out and they answered "genki sushi". I specifically asked if it was genki sushi and they said "yes"! I wanted to be sure before I drove all the way there. Very terrible. Very misleading. read more

I am extremely picky when it comes to sushi. The quality of the fish, and the flavors infused in the rolls. From the outside, this place look like a try. The service was solid, wait time short, and ambience average. I felt the rolls were overpriced and lacking creativity. We had four different rolls, and they all tasted the same, for the most part. Nothing specifically popped out that excited my tastebuds. It reminded me a little of Taco Bell-the food looks and tastes the same. We didn't realize there's a short period where they closed before dinner so I recommend checking the times before going! Came 5 minutes after opening dinner and the place was PACKED on a Friday. Super quick service, I got the tempura soba and it was served with chili powder bottle. I almost never write reviews, but I genuinely felt inclined to after this experience. This was our first time back since the management change and unfortunately it was a complete mess from start to finish. The service was incredibly disorganized. Staff seemed overwhelmed, nobody communicated with each other, and we spent most of the night waiting around trying to figure out what was going on. Drinks and food took forever, nobody checked in on us, and the entire restaurant felt chaotic and poorly managed. What really pushed the experience over the edge, though, was the owner constantly hovering around our table drinking and inserting himself into conversations no one invited him into. He kept making inappropriate personal comments and would not stop talking despite us very clearly trying to enjoy our dinner privately. We gave short responses, tried to disengage politely, and just wanted to be left alone, but he kept coming back over anyway. There's a difference between being friendly and completely ignoring social cues. Instead of feeling welcomed, we felt uncomfortable the entire night. Between the poor service, bizarre atmosphere, and lack of professionalism from management, this was genuinely one of the worst dining experiences I've had in a long time. We will absolutely not be returning. I'd genuinely give 0 stars if I could. read more

Walking into this place, it is kinda hidden because it is covered by other businesses. But as you walk through there is super cute lighting throughout the whole shopping center. Date night vibes. The sushi place itself has a lot of seating. Staff is super friendly. Nice option of low or regular sodium soy sauce. We sat at the bar and were lucky to sit next to a couple who's a long time customer of Tony (the owner) and Andy (the sushi master). The remodeling of the restaurant took down the photos Mr. Nakamura had up of fishing expositions and replaced it with big screen TVs. Soft shell crab roll is still one of the better rolls there. Other rolls were good too. Though the wrapping was not tight and several rolls came undone. Service was mediocre with our waitress taking our order and delivering food only. Had to flag her to get the bill. No check ins along the meal. I'd go back again, but it doesn't have the same quality and charm as Akai Hana. read more

This is a cute Japanese restaurant tucked away in Rancho Bernardo. There's currently some construction going on in the plaza so it was a little tricky to find. We went right at opening at 5 pm and we were the first to be seated. Seating picked up in a big way at 5:30 and by 6 pm the restaurant was pretty full. I ordered the dinner special sushi + chicken teriyaki & rice ($24.95) and it did not disappoint. The portion size on the chicken teriyaki was generous and the chicken was piping hot right off the grill. The side sashimi sushi slices were thick and fresh. Even the miso soup was fresh and home made and the salad was crispy with a perfect home made dressing. Service was exceptionally friendly, attentive, and polite. It felt like I was back in Osaka for the evening. Will definitely be back! read more

When Akai Hana closed its doors, we were devastated. We had been going to this sushi bar/restaurant in Rancho Bernardo for over 20 years, since it was called Shien of Osaka. We were used to their really high-quality, fresh fish and great service. We brought friends and family there, and we made friends there, too, as we shared our favorite rolls and nigiri sushi at the sushi bar over the years. When Genki Sushi took over the space, we were so hopeful. The interior furnishings were largely unchanged. And many of the "special" items were on the Genki menu. Sadly, those are the only things that remained the same. Tonight was our second visit to Genki. It will be our last. The new owner and the sushi chefs seem friendly enough. The quality of the salmon was absolutely horrible (I wouldn't even cook a piece of salmon of this quality - see photos). The fish isn't fresh, and the sushi isn't good. The rolls are wrapped loosely, too, so they fall apart very easily. That's forgivable, but the poor quality of the fish isn't. I'm glad other people have had a better experience. Ours has not been good. read more

They're back! It's not called Akai Hana anymore but most of the staff is back and more importantly, the cook is back! Food tastes the same as before. They've freshened up the old outdated restaurant and took out the carpet which is a good thing. If you haven't been back, please go back. There's lots of construction going on in the area and it's most likely affecting foot traffic. They are open now for a soft opening and I think the server said August 1 is the grand opening! I chose to try this sushi spot after reading the great reviews so I went in having high expectations and those were definitely met! It's a really large restaurant as well which gives me hope if I try to come here on a weekend evening. The sushi was so fresh and delicious. And the sashimi was also amazing. We had a few different waitresses helping us out and they were all sweet and warm. My son who is two years old was also crying at one point and the waitress brought him over a cookie which again is just so incredibly kind. Best sashimi I've ever had ( including Japan). The sushi is also amazing. I honestly can't say enough wonderful things about Genki. They have 2 fixed seatings ( lunch and dinner) daily. That gets some getting used to but worth it. The owner talks to all guests and makes sure it all is perfect.. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and is pivotal in keeping Genki at the top of its game. Everyone is very friendly and you can see how proud they are of the place.. Terrible service, Friday night and they were busy but the service is haphazard, it was freezing and they kept the back door open which we were seated next to. Didn't help that a totally clueless family kept taking their toddler and in out of that door and kept it open every time we would shut it. After the anxiety which affected our neighborhood and others with the sad closing of Akai Hana, one of the early creators of Hoorah has brought many of the former staff back and opened Genki Sushi. Very much alike in terms of menu selections, we popped in for lunch during a soft opening. Seeing our favorite servers, meeting the owner, feeling like we had gone away for a while and then returned home. The food was the same, the mood festive and celebratory, smiles everywhere. Great food, great service. From looking at the outside you would never guess what's inside. That's always been the problem with this mall in RB, ever since it was first built. The outside of every shop is identical and bland but then you get inside and everything is so well thought out. The salad had the nicest presentation I've ever seen of any salad at a sushi bar, very decorative. Everything was very well done, with the exception of my drink. The Arnold Palmer was 90% water with only a hint of ice tea and a hint of lemonade. Flavored water, really. I should have known when the server approached and delivered a glass of (almost) clear water. Anyhow the "slightly Arnold Palmer flavored water" was the only regrettable part. The old Aki Hana has been brought to life in grand fashion. The new owner not only greets almost everyone that walks in but checks on them during their meal.
