    Chirashi Sushi
    Mindy O.

This was my first visit after this place became Genki Sushi. The inside had light cosmetic remodeling, but the layout and the overall feel were almost the same as the previous establishment. They have lunch menu and lunch specials. I had Chirashi Sushi, and it had a good amount of fish (16 pcs?) for $35. Better price than having a sashimi plate with the same amount of sashimi. It came in two separate compartments: sashimi and rice. It was nicely plated, and the sashimi was fresh. The stacking containers looked old and needed some upgrade, though. Overall, the price seemed more expensive than the competitions. They have a lot of tables and relatively quiet atmosphere if you want a relaxing ambiance and enjoy conversations.

We wanted fusion rolls for lunch on a Friday and we got it here! Lots of people during lunch on a Friday, but there's plenty of seating. Well-curated photos and menu, which was so helpful since there was quite a selection. Our rolls were delicious. One was baked, and it had a very strong and tasty sauce. One had a light vinaigrette-style dressing, which complemented the fish beautifully. The third had a lovely balance of heat, fish, avocado, and crunch. The miso soup was one of the best ones I've had in a restaurant. They used white miso, and it was very flavorful! The right amount of tofu and wakame. Maybe add a little chopped green onion for color? Tasty lunch. Happy we went.

We arrived at 8PM on a Friday night. Got seated immediately. Fresh and good quality sashimi! We ordered 3x3 sashimi, Uni nigiri, chirasi bowl, and 2 rolls. All were delicious. Services were prompt. We didn't felt rushed either. Enjoy our meal!

Our first visit since the restaurant changed, and it was a mixed experience. The fish was fresh and the food was good overall, but service felt rushed and unfriendly. Our edamame came out after several mains, and when I asked about it, I was told it "takes longer to make than the sushi rolls," which came off a bit dismissive. The chirashi bowl had great hamachi, salmon, and scallops, but imitation crab for $35 was disappointing. Prices are fair, but the service left a lot to be desired. Not the worst, but probably not a return spot for us.

Haven't been here in a while since owner change. Sushi and tempura really good. Nice portions bit on expensive side. Recommend

We didn't realize there's a short period where they closed before dinner so I recommend checking the times before going! Came 5 minutes after opening dinner and the place was PACKED on a Friday. Super quick service, I got the tempura soba and it was served with chili powder bottle. I always appreciate that because I use way more than probably the average person and I need constant access to the spice. Such a warm and comforting meal with this rain!

Walking into this place, it is kinda hidden because it is covered by other businesses. But as you walk through there is super cute lighting throughout the whole shopping center. Date night vibes. The sushi place itself has a lot of seating. Staff is super friendly. Nice option of low or regular sodium soy sauce. Only thing it there is a ballet or dance studio above so it was a little loud at first. Sushi quality is great would recommend lots of choices.

Taste: 4 Value: 3 Service: 3 Came here to try out the sushi after Akai Hana closed. They have many of the same dishes as Akai Hana, but not the same staff. The remodeling of the restaurant took down the photos Mr. Nakamura had up of fishing expositions and replaced it with big screen TVs. Soft shell crab roll is still one of the better rolls there. Other rolls were good too. Though the wrapping was not tight and several rolls came undone. Service was mediocre with our waitress taking our order and delivering food only. Had to flag her to get the bill. No check ins along the meal. I'd go back again, but it doesn't have the same quality and charm as Akai Hana.

Wow! A hidden gem with some of the best sushi I've ever had. Owner Tony Chang watched over us, shared some jokes, and made for a very special business dinner. Pink Sake, Soju, and an incredible array of fresh delicious sushi. Great katsu too. You have to try Monday Night roll and No Pressure roll. Even accommodated my no avocado request. We'll be back! Thank you!

Sushi + Teriyaki chicken & rice Dinner Special

This is a cute Japanese restaurant tucked away in Rancho Bernardo. There's currently some construction going on in the plaza so it was a little tricky to find. We went right at opening at 5 pm and we were the first to be seated. Seating picked up in a big way at 5:30 and by 6 pm the restaurant was pretty full. I ordered the dinner special sushi + chicken teriyaki & rice ($24.95) and it did not disappoint. The portion size on the chicken teriyaki was generous and the chicken was piping hot right off the grill. The side sashimi sushi slices were thick and fresh. Even the miso soup was fresh and home made and the salad was crispy with a perfect home made dressing. Service was exceptionally friendly, attentive, and polite. It felt like I was back in Osaka for the evening. Will definitely be back!

When Akai Hana closed its doors, we were devastated. We had been going to this sushi bar/restaurant in Rancho Bernardo for over 20 years, since it was called Shien of Osaka. We were used to their really high-quality, fresh fish and great service. We brought friends and family there, and we made friends there, too, as we shared our favorite rolls and nigiri sushi at the sushi bar over the years. When Genki Sushi took over the space, we were so hopeful. The interior furnishings were largely unchanged. And many of the "special" items were on the Genki menu. Sadly, those are the only things that remained the same. Tonight was our second visit to Genki. It will be our last. The new owner and the sushi chefs seem friendly enough. The quality of the salmon was absolutely horrible (I wouldn't even cook a piece of salmon of this quality - see photos). The fish isn't fresh, and the sushi isn't good. The rolls are wrapped loosely, too, so they fall apart very easily. That's forgivable, but the poor quality of the fish isn't. I'm glad other people have had a better experience. Ours has not been good.

Cute sushi spot near Phil's bbq…read more Very warm and inviting inside and I like all the booths and how spaced out they are even in the center of the restaurant. There's a lot of businesses around this area so I can see Sushi Kami being a popular spot for a go-to lunch outside of work. We came for dinner and got seated right away and it wasn't too busy at all. It was nice but still casual at the same time if that makes sense. I will say the parking was a little tight and we had to make a bit of an awkward U-turn to get to the restaurant but the lot wasn't that full so it wasn't too bad but I could see this being trickier in the daytime. I really enjoyed both the spicy tuna and salmon. I've had a lot of weird spicy tuna but this one hit just right. It's always hard to find that perfect balance between fish and spice but I really enjoyed this one. The salmon was good too. The standout was definitely the tempura we got as well. It was large and came out hot and crispy and perfect. This is the type of sushi restaurant I could take people to who don't necessarily like sushi all that much. There's lots of options on the menu including bulgogi (next time I shall try!) and really good combos for people to enjoy. Ambiance is chill but still has that fun sushi vibe with the displays of fish (and I even saw some creative fish decorating on the walls which I thought was a nice touch) Service was nice and they always refilled our waters without us having to ask. I enjoyed the food and the vibe! Would definitely come back to try more ...and brings others along too!

It looks like most of the other tables were reserved for reservations. The decor is modern and very clean and chic. They also had a high chair and was accommodating with our baby. Food was incredible and the quality of the fish is evident throughout. We started with the mixed shrimp and vegetable tempura - light crispy batter, really good. The sashimi champaloo came with 12 pieces of sashimi, salmon, tuna, yellowtail, and the fish of the day was albacore. For rolls, we got the Luna Lemon, Maru's Sushi Toro, and Hamachi Hiro. The rolls were a good size and I loved how each had a fun twist (but at the same time not TOO crazy with their combinations like some other sushi places). You can tell it was designed with intention and each roll had a nice balance. The Luna Lemon roll was great with spicy tuna inside, salmon outside, and the soy dressing and shallot oil put it over the top. The Maru's Sushi - Toro roll looked so good in the photos so I knew we had to order it. The negitoro was delicious and did not disappoint. The Hamachi Hiro roll was hearty and loved the combination of yellowtail outside the shrimp tempura in the inside. We were blown away by how fast the service is. The staff was friendly and on top of everything, and the food came out REALLY fast. For example, when we ordered an extra roll at the end, it came out in maybe 3 minutes and we were shocked. Highly recommend!

Every piece was delicious! -Chirashi bowl ($30.95): I really enjoyed the sushi rice in this bowl since not every restaurant does quality sushi rice. The sashimi was pretty good, but quality wise the sashimi champloo was definitely superior. -Salmon mango roll ($9.50): This had spicy salmon, mango, and ume furikake. This was quite tasty, and definitely had a kick to it. -Maru Maru roll ($9.50): This had imitation crab meat, shrimp tempura, and avocado. A basic roll but still good. -Chicken katsu curry don ($16.95): This was disappointing because the portion was quite small for the price. I do like how the curry was packaged separately. All in all, Hakumaru has quality sashimi and rolls, but could work on portion size for chicken katsu curry don.

It was Sunday night and we were driving back to Escondido from Anaheim. GPS says they close at 9:30 PM. We roll in at exactly 9:05 PM. Place still had customers inside, open tables, and two hostesses literally started walking us to a table. The male host said, "Last call is in 10 minutes." Cool. I jokingly ask, "For alcohol?" because I wanted TWO damn sushi rolls, not a 12-course feast. He says with a smile, "No. Last call for food and everything else." Okay... easy day. We already knew exactly what we wanted. Simple order. In and out. No biggy. Then came the look. You know the look. The "damn it, I want to go home, why did customers show up during business hours?" look from management and the sushi chefs. Next thing you know, manager says we cannot be served. Wait... what happened to "last call in 10 minutes?" Suddenly now it is, "You missed last call at 9:00 PM." It was 9:06 PM. So your establishment closes at 9:30 PM... but actually closes at 9:00 PM... but also has a last call in 10 minutes... but also refuses service? Got it. Crystal clear. Listen, if y'all want to leave at 9:00, then change the damn hours to 9:00. Do not advertise 9:30 and have people driving 70 miles just to get hit with attitude and false hope. So we walked out and went somewhere else. Being turned away wasn't the problem. The problem was being treated like customers showing up during YOUR posted business hours was somehow our fault. Change your damn hours to 9:00 pm then. Do better!

The staff are very friendly and greet you immediately, except for the sushi chef, who is very stern and does not engage. We came at opening, and the place was empty, for a Saturday, I found that strange. We were told to choose any seat we wanted. Service was quick and very attentive. The menu has a little of everything, but it definitely caters more to the American palate than the Japanese. We ordered Spicy Cucumbers and Shishito Peppers as starters. Both were good. They actually tasted really good when you ate them together. For our mains, we ordered Unagi sashimi style, the honey roll, and the Roka roll. To be brutally honest, I rate sushi restaurants based on their Unagi. For me, it has to be cut very traditionally and served the same. This Unagi did not meet my standards, and yet, it was very tasty and fresh. It was a good surprise. The Honey Roll was very fresh and tasty, except for the lemon on top. The pith was not removed, and it gave it a bitter aftertaste. When we removed the lemon, it was very good. I did not like the Roka Roll, but my daughter really enjoyed it. It was missing something, in my opinion. The portions are generous, so you can fill up with just a few selections. This was just not to my palate. We asked for hot tea, and they brought us a coffee mug with a tea bag and hot water. As I said, more American than Japanese in style. The worst part for me was the ladies' room. I doubt they can do much about this, but there is such a strong sewer smell in there that it is overpowering and really hard to use the bathroom.
