I was torn between 2 and 3 stars but went with 3 as they are continuing to operate in these trying times, which many establishments cannot currently say. Nothing here is really outstanding, from the décor to the service to the food, but I appreciated that the prices were decent for New York and it was near our hotel, which can be tricky for the downtown/Financial District area. We were seated quickly and the wait to settle the bill wasn't too terrible, either. Despite the reviews I decided to give it a shot. If there is one word to describe this place...it would be overpriced. I paid $18 for a gyro and some fries when its literally $10 MAX anywhere else. My friend also ordered the pork gyro and had to take all of the pork out because it was not tasteful. The sauce that they claim to be tzatziki sauce is not even close to tasting anything like that. I was honestly quite disappointed. We also ordered a burger and fries which also came out to $18 which is way more compared to other similar style restaurants/diners. Quintessential diner food. I find something really comforting about places with a million things on the menu and constant re-fills of fresh coffee. Just enjoyed a fabulous experience at George's Diner. Our youth group of 28 guests arrived for an early dinner after a day visiting St Nicholas National Shrine and the WTC 9/11 Memorial Museum. The food was extremely greasy. The sauces were watery and tasteless. My sister got sick from their Club Sandwich. The service was atrocious. We had two servers and both spoke little to no english. We recieved food we did not order and despite not eating it and telling them the issue, we were still charged for it. Our bill contained lots of items we never ordered nor recieved and it took us 30 minutes if explaining to them that we were not going to pay for those. They gave themselves a $20 tip without telling us in secret. The servers we had also seemed annoyed and aggressive to us. The ambiance was not great. It was gloomy and sparsely decorated. Tables were seperated by old and ratty wodden planks that were drilled together without much thought. The tables were sticky and slightly broken and the chairs shifted all the time and were not of great quality. I do not recommend this Restaurant. Stopped by for breakfast on an unnaturally quiet weekday morning; pre-pandemic, I could imagine it bustled with people going to work. The sole server was attentive despite splitting his attention between multiple diners, and running in and out bussing tables. Solid cup of coffee, and refilled frequently. The frequent flyer omelette of feta, spinach, tomato and onion (here called Mediterranean) is good quality with plentiful fillings and a distinct feta flavor; omelette and hash browns needed salt but I rather add it myself than have it too salty. It's a tad pricier than my usual low-key diner stops in Queens or Brooklyn, but that's location. While nothing upscale or exceptional, that's not why you'd come here. I've traveled to NYC and had really great experiences with local diners before but this was not one of them. I did enjoy reading about how they came back post 9/11 and the setup is promising. But it lacked in every area after that. The food was very bland. Fries hard. Burger dry. Sandwich bland. I wasn't impressed with the food. The service was solid when it came to our table and waiting on us. But when we received the check they made a point to circle out the recommended tip for us to leave. I find this highly tacky and even in our new tipping culture world this was out of line. Not impressed and will not recommend anyone else come here. I'm very disappointed in the service that I received today. I went for brunch today. My date and I put our names on a list to be seated for a table for two. The hostess said that it would take about 20 minutes for us to be seated. The hostess seated a couple before seating us, even though the couple came in after us. When I pointed to the list of names that the hostess had written down and I showed her that my date's name was four people ahead of the couple who just took our table, the hostess did not apologize. She did not try to accommodate us nor even give us any customer service. I feel that if I were not a Black woman and if my date we're not an Asian American woman, then we would've been seated before the white man and his white date. I feel like the hostess decided to seat the white man before seating us, because we are minorities. I am very disappointed with the discrimination that occurred today.
