I have only been to the other George's under the overpass and I love the ambiance there so I was not sure what to expect. Same ambience and same delicious food. The options for meals are endless. If you are a picky eater or if you have a child that is a picky eater this would be a great place to go. Options and more options. Customers wear masks inside and there was hand sanitizer provided at the counter where you order. Tables are far enough apart were you sitting close to anyone else. Great spot! read more

Great hole-in-the-wall feel as soon as you walk in, with plenty of large and small tables to accommodate your party. Their menu will appease all appetites, but be prepared to wait a few minutes as everything is made-to-order out of their kitchen. I prefer their daily specials, which are always a great bargain and leave room for dessert... or another beer! They have bottle/can-only beer selection, which isn't too extensive but they have definitely have 'something for everyone.' Initially was going to be a 2 star rating but past good experiences and giving benefit of doubt in covid19 times I move up to 3 stars. Covid19 is tough and an excuse but sometimes it might be an invalid excuse. Have not been to this location in about a year; Georges on O'Neal I average 1x /month and have no problems/issues there. Today's visit to Southside was for the fish---today is Friday and many local historians will say that it's Georges fish day and I thought the same today. I called in and placed my order. I was not asked my salad dressing preference but figured they would ask me when I arrived for pickup. Turns out I did not have a choice of dressing as I was not given a salad but instead Cole slaw. I did not worry about this because under the current norm, some things are limited and different which I assumed the sole option of Cole slaw is. For the record, the Cole slaw was tasty and fine---it was more peppery and tangy as opposed to sweet however it was good flavor and no complaints. A difference from the last time I got the Friday fish special is price---today's charge after tax was over &15, or almost 25% more than o remember it 6 weeks ago from Georges on O'Neal---again covid19 May Be the reason for that, however the higher price did surprise me, but that was not the biggest surprise. I prefer tartar sauce , as opposed to ketchup, with my fish---and going from past experience, 1 bin of tartar is not enough so I then received surprise number next as they charge additional money for 1 additional tartar sauce---this has not occurred to me at Georges on O Neal so I do not know if this is a Georges Southside thing or a result of covid19 but my lunch Friday fish order cost a little more. I guess I could have chosen to get and use more catsup packages since they do not seem to up charge catsup but like I said I like tartar sauce. When I was told the amount of my bill I realized at that time something was amiss and asked if they charged extra for the 2nd tartar sauce and her reply was along the lines of "gotta make money somehow"--- I certainly did not like that comment! Interestingly enough I went to Georges planning to spend (leave) the $20 bill I had---food with remainder as the tip recognizing the uncertainty of the current norm. Driving over there and relying on past experience I had thought it would be about $13 for food and about $7 for tip but it turned out food (higher charge plus extra cost for extra tartar sauce put me around $17 for food and $3 for tip. So much for my good intentions. By the way, no complaints about the fish---great as usual! In conclusion, in the past when I had the option of Georges Southside or Sammy's, I usually chose Georges Southside as thats what I preferred --better food and better workers--but next time I have the option it will be Sammy's---new management and time to give them another try considering the less than positive overall experience at Georges Southside today. Covid19 or not, restaurant industry is competitive and past overall experience plays a part in my selection of where I choose to eat in the future. C'est la vie. read more

I've been to this location several times now with friends and I can not figure out the draw. The food is average and over priced. On this visit I got a shrimp remoulade salad, cup of gumbo and two vodka clubs that totaled $36.56 before tip. The shrimp we're well cooked but it was served on shredded iceberg lettuce with remoulade that tasted like miracle whip. The gumbo was full of meat and was pretty tasty, but the $6 price for a tea cup size portion was a little steep. The two vodka clubs we're served in a thin Collins glass and based on the over all bill were about $7 each. There is nothing wrong worth the place, it is clean and the service is decent. Still it has not impressed us enough to want to come here with out our group of friends who do like this place. read more

Took the wife and kids for a casual dinner. A few observations: 1) The burgers are bigger than you might expect. Really a pleasant surprise. Cooked well, juicy. could have been seasoned a little more, but the wide selection of Louisiana Hot Sauces they offer fixed that! 2) If you order the large onion rings, you better really-really-really like onion rings, or you better be planning on sharing with the table. The order is HUGE! Ditto for the fries. Both were well-prepared, but -- as with the burgers -- they would have benefitted from a little bit more seasoning in the kitchen. The atmosphere of George's is a refreshing change from the run-of-the-mill chain restaurant. This place is funky and has a charm and personality that's becoming less and less common. From phoning it in to geting back home it was 20 minutes in total which includes 15 minutes of cooking time for them.. so it should be relatively "hot and fresh." It was stale and felt like a mouthful of batter. It was either made multiple days ago and then fried the day of or frozen. Either way don't go here. I stopped in here for a quick lunch. The friendly, knowledgeable woman behind the bar said that their burgers and po'boys are their most popular menu items, so I ordered the shrimp po'boy. It was simple and delicious. Freshly breaded, perfectly fried shrimp atop a freshly baked, thick (but not heavy) sub roll, with just the right amount of mayo, lettuce, and thinly sliced tomatoes. It was easily the best po'boy I've had in a very long time, including one I had while in New Orleans for Mardi Gras. The fries appear to be fresh cut, and they give you an ample serving of them. Yum. The interior is typical of a bar or pub. There is a second, brighter room to the right. When I arrived, only men were sitting at the bar or in the main dining room. All women save one man were seated in the second room. It seemed strange at first, but several of the women had young children with them so perhaps they sat out there so as not to disturb others. They have large menus of both food and beer. I wish I were in town longer to check out some of the other offerings. If you're in need of a quick, delicious po'boy, check this place out. read more

Service tonight was terrible. Moved from a table to the bar to try and get better service....and it seems this bartender may only serve male patrons. Food came after 30 minutes and was pretty good. Bartender yelled our name and I said "excuse me...I think that's our order"....she said very passive aggressively, "okay....." and laughed. I live near this restaurant and my son who is 5 loves hamburgers. He wanted Wendy's and I talked him into going here. I should have taken him to Wendy's instead. I went in at about 1:30pm on a Saturday 6/22/13, place was dead. Hardly anyone there, maybe 5 patrons there. I told the young lady at the register that i had never been at this location before, I had been at the other one on Perkins a year ago. We were looking for a good burger. The first problem was that they don't have a kids cheeseburger on the menu. They had a kids menu (chicken fingers, catfish and something else) C'mon, your big draw are the burgers and you have a kids menu, but no burger? So I ordered an adult burger for my son. I ordered the shrimp Po Boy. The menu said fried, I asked to get it grilled, the girl just looked at me, the bar patron said "you can get anything grilled if you ask for it", so then the young lady said, sure. I should have left at that point but I'm glutton for punishment, so I pushed on. Everything here is Ala cart, I ordered fries to go with my kids burger and then the young lady behind the register said their Onion Rings were the best. So I ordered that for my side. She told me I pay when the food was ready. So we went and sat down in the porch area, ten minutes passes and they call me. I go up and she says it's $30.65. I'm thinking WTF did I order? I look up at the menu board and sure enough fries and onion rings come in two sizes, small and large. I didn't know that, my mistake, the waitress was nice enough to ring me up for two large plates. Stupid me, I'll know better next time. I get my food I sit down, my kid is starving, he hones in on the fries and his burger. First thing I notice my shrimp po-boy is cold. The bread is cold, the shrimp is luke warm. The fries were almost cold, and the onion rings? They WERE cold. But my kids burger was hot and fresh and he didn't care. I didn't want to rip his food out from under him and take it back and wait even longer. Yes I could have taken it back and demanded new food, but try convincing your 5 year old that. Again shame on me, at this point I'm thinking, Wendy's would have been better, at least I knew what I was going to get there. I went back up to get a refill and the young lady asked how was everything. I told her the fries, onion rings and my po-boy were cold. She offered to get me new food, but I told her that wasn't necessary, they should have gotten it right on the first try, they weren't busy, there was no excuse to serve cold food. She then proceeded to say, "Sorry, maybe they got a bit rushed back there" I'm thinking rushed? How? There's no one here!! Then she continues to say "Next time they'll do a better job, I'm sure of it" That's reassuring. Meh! To top off this miserable experience, we went into the game room and it was HOT in there, no A/C at all. The games were old and lame and expensive. We drop 75c on one run of Fast and Furious and then left. I'm sorry, but this place is for the college kids and the retired crowd that went to LSU. Save your money and go to Dempsey's that place rocks. They take care of you and the service is prompt and the food is good. Never had a problem there. George's should send their staff over there to learn how to take care of customers. I realize some people go here and love it, maybe this was a one off experience, but know this, if you walk in this place and there's less than half a dozen patrons, just turn around and leave, you're gonna get cold food and bad service. If they're busy, I'm sure they'll be better suited to give you better food and service. George's management or ownership if you're reading this, you should visit one of your own establishments on a weekend to see how it's going, maybe fix some of the flaws. I'll only go back if my kid or my family take me. I won't go again on my own steam. read more

I am a sucker for a great shrimp poboy. At Christmas 2007, I had a fabulous one here so we made a point to return on our visit at Christmas 2008. It's not far from my mother's, so it should've been an easy win. I was disappointed on our return. It was okay enough, but I'm pretty critical of fried shrimp and they'd dialed it in with this rendition. My mother got a Reuben, and she didn't eat more than a few bites. We also got an order of fried pickles which were a complete, weird disappointment. The service was only okay this trip and we waited for way too long to get our order. In fact, they may have forgotten to bring it to us, because it wasn't exactly warm when we got our sandwiches. It wasn't overly busy, even for a Saturday afternoon. The good: delicious food--we particularly loved the shrimp poboy (well-seasoned fried shrimp and crispy/chewy bread), burger (cooked well with soft bun), and onion rings (generous portion for the small--nice, homemade texture). BBQ sandwich and kids grilled cheese (VERY melty and gooey, just like my daughter likes it) were also good, with the only lackluster thing being the fries (a little on the soggy side for our liking). Overall, great food, lots of options, and we're excited to add this to our take-out list, as well. The place is also fun--authentic, local, lots of TVs to view the game, and a small arcade area the kids liked. The bad: our wait for the food was insanely long. Yes, it was a Sunday afternoon, and it was pretty crowded when we arrived, but it really seemed like everyone got their order before us, and we didn't order anything out-of-the-ordinary or difficult to prepare. The waitress was also pretty snarky when she handed us an order sheet and said, speaking ninety-miles-a-minute with a rude attitude--"Write what you want. Food comes exactly like you write it. Friendly, efficient service, decent food & atmosphere, at reasonable prices. I opted for the Swiss/avocado burger and shared some fries & onion rings with my dining partners. Not the best burger I've ever eaten, but certainly above average, and loaded with fresh avocado. Great fries and even better onion rings. We had a birthday in our group, so took advantage of the chocolate lava cake, with a scoop of ice cream. Yummy! I didn't get a chance to try a beer from their adequate selection (business lunch). We like George's especially burgers and oysters But, the Highland Ave location is not as clean as it should be Tonight we had a California BLT, which has avocado and sliced cheese. Forget the cheese. It takes away from the BLT, which has at best some very mediocre bacon. The bacon is thin, crumbles easily and not up even to the basic on at Waffle House. The house salad is wonderful. The vinegarete dressing is very tasty. We'll go back to George's, although only at night when the grime can't be seen but won't order another BLT. read more

It doesn't look like much from the outside, but it's much bigger when you walk in. Order at the front and then pick a seat. They have a bar and good selection of beers as well. I ordered the California BLT. My only complaint would be that the bacon was not cooked quite as much as I would like to be, but it was still pretty good. Also, if you love lots of meat on your sandwich, this is definitely the stop for you, but I do not particularly share that opinion and so I ended up taking some of the bacon off. Georges is the quintessential college restaurant and bar. On the inside, there are autographed dollar bills covering the ceilings and walls, along with different sports memorabilia. The food here is pretty good to me; I usually spring for a roast beef po-boy (alas, they no longer serve meat pies here). I go here often because they are down the street and give more of a neighborhood feel than most restaurants here in South Baton Rouge. The beer is always cold and wine is always served with a smile. Their seared tuna, burgers and fried mushrooms are what I usually order (depending on if I am on weight watchers that day). Their cheese fries are not in my top ten due to grease and that annoying piece of parchment paper. I've been going to both George's Southside and Perkins locations for a few years now, and the "have it your way" ordering is great! As a vegetarian, I usually get the Dan's veggie. However, they also have an off-menu choice between a veggie patty or black bean patty (get it on a wheat bun and add avocado and jalapenos, so good!). Another off-menu trick is to get the frozen fries (IMO), and load them up with japs and cheese! They always have frozen fries on Friday, but you can ask for them anytime! I always love going with friends or even just hanging out at the bar to get some work done. Great place :) read more

Love George's at the overpass so we decided to try this one since it's closer to home. The ambiance is definitely different and kind of refreshing for this one to be a bright and airy place compared to the overpass. Ordered the California BLT and the jalapeño cheese fries. The BLT was delicious but the fries were fairly bad compared to the other George's location-it was literally cheddar cheese on fries with maybe 3 jalapeños. Other orders we've had were full of jalapeños. Otherwise our food was great! Will be back again soon. read more
