A wonderful mid-west supper club with lots of steaks! Atmosphere is very old school, and all of the servers have probably worked there more years than I've been alive. They do have a complimentary appetizer thingy with pate, spreadable cheese ,and crackers, so that is good. Everything (except the steaks) is fried and served with cheese! Fried cheese curds and onion strings are sooo good! They also have a hot bacon dressing for your starter salad! Love it! read more

Would have been 5 but as my friend Tom (whom I was taking out to dinner) first noticed (because he knows of the typical quality of George's steaks) their NY strip was a little more chewy / gristly than usual, so it would really legitimately drop to a 3. We ate them anyway. The waitress Cathy was nice but I had to wait and ask for more dinner rolls and I never got asked for a beverage refill before I ran out. The highlight after the disappointing steak was the owner Edie (sp?), after Tom told her about the unusually inferior quality of the strips she fully acknowledged it and apologized bringing my review back up to a 4. Walking into this place makes you feel as though you've traveled back in time to eastern Europe. The piano player in the corner, the smoky atmosphere and the dark wallpaper compelled me to order a whiskey old-fashioned. The food is pretty basic - meat and potatoes. You also gain access to a salad bar, which left much to be desired. I thought my fish was good, but I'm not sure if it was worth the price. For a non-steak eater, I was out of my element. My t bone was delicious. However, I originally ordered prime rib but they were out. The service was quite slow, and our bill got charged with two extra steaks. Lastly, the prices were a bit higher than most other places that have equal food and better service. All in all it wasn't terrible. The piano bar was a nice touch. It was our first Valentine's Day, celebrated a day early cuz we work in a restaurant. George's happens to be only two blocks from my house and I had a hankering for a good steak. They were busy when we got there, so we decided to have drinks in their bar while we waited for a table. The decor in this restaurant is vintage early 70's complete with an oil lamp hanging above the dark wood bar. Drinks were reasonable and well prepared and the servers polite. They have a ginourmous menu, and I decided to have the Bleu Encrusted Strip.. We sat down at our table after about 45 min, and our soup and salad came immediately. The salad was unimaginative and the potato soup kinda chilly. I was there for the steak, so I didn't get my undies in a bundle over it. The steaks came. My date had the rib eye, cooked rare. It was just perfect. My steak was just a tad overdone(I ordered rare as well) but was still very juicy and flavorful. I love cheese and bleu cheese on a steak is a treat. side dishes were ok, nothing special. Drinks came to 22 bucks, and dinner a whopping 35. :-) We left feeling warm and fuzzy. George's is a nice place for a date in a small town. The bar is cozy and apparently has dueling pianos (although they either were not performing the night I was there as advertised, or started very late), which is unique for the area. The food was good quality, but did not leave me with the feeling that I just had to come back. The exterior of the building does give the feeling that it is well run, and I felt that way with the service. A nice upscale supper club rather than a steak house is how I viewed the experience. read more

Went for a date night with the wife, no reservation, and was able to get a table on a Friday night within 30 minutes. After a round of Bloody Mary's and Old Fashions we made our way to the tightly positioned table. It was interesting listening to the conversation directly next to us! We ordered Surf and Turf (Prime Rib w/ Perch) and the Perch plate. The Prime Rib was fantastic, and the Perch was tasty; however we both found bones in our fish which was unfortunate. My review is based on more than just the food, but the overall experience at George's Steakhouse. This past weekend, our vendor had us fly to Wisconsin for meetings and to go to the Green Bay Packers game. He knows that I love steak, so he made reservations at George's because that's where their company takes all of their clients. The entire day he was talking up the restaurant and how great their steaks were. He even challenged me to finish the porterhouse when we went because it was supposed to be huge. Fast forward to 7:30pm when our reservation was and our friend asked the waitress for the specials for Saturday evening. She said they had a wonderful roasted duck special, but they were already out of it. Out of your Saturday night special at 7:30pm? She said it happens a lot. Especially when there's a football game that weekend, which gets me to wonder why they wouldn't order more. Very poor management if you already know that it's going to be a busy night and you don't have enough food inventory. I understand the whole supply and demand thing, but that's a bit ridiculous to run out of your special dish at dinner time? Maybe we should have gone for supper at 4pm or something. After that, everything seemed fine, but "seemed" doesn't always work out the way you want. We ordered the coconut shrimp as an appetizer and when it came out, it tasted like it came from a freezer back then deep fried quickly and slapped onto the plate. Amazingly, that still took about 20 minutes to get out to us. Another 20 minutes went by and the waitress finally came by to take our main entree orders. My sister and dad went with the filet mignon, our vendor the prime rib, and I accepted the challenge for the porterhouse. The waitress went to the back and returned 5 minutes later to tell us that they had run out of prime rib as well. I was sure that she was joking, but she was dead serious so he switched it to the porterhouse, medium rare. The soups came out fairly quick, which was a nice surprise. My dad and I had the French Onion Soup, but it was barely warm so we told the waitress. She took it back and returned saying that they had run out of French Onion Soup now. As if his tiny bowl was the last scoop in the entire restaurant and they couldn't just heat it up again or something. He switched it to the chicken dumpling soup, which ended up being better anyway and they hadn't run out of that yet. We got to talking and two tables behind us had left and been re-seated. One was large, about 10 people, and the other only had two. Now 20 more minutes had passed and we still hadn't received our salads yet. We couldn't even check with our waitress because she didn't return since the soup fiasco. The other tables had a different server and by the time we got our salads, they were already eating theirs. Mind you, they had been seated way after us. Salads were decent, nothing spectacular and then we played the waiting game again. Our main entrees came out close to 30 minutes later. We had to flag down our waitress to have her check on them. Oddly enough, the big table were already halfway through their meals and the table of two had paid their check and were about to leave. Now to the food, since we finally were able to eat it. The steaks came out good. Very simple seasoning, which I like. Both filets were cooked nicely. My porterhouse was just a tad over medium rare but our vendor's was close to medium well. Neither were close to the 24oz that they claimed on the menu. He was starving so he just ate it and kept apologizing about the bad service as if it were his fault that they ran out of duck, prime rib, and French Onion Soup then took ages to serve us. The dinners came with a side and everyone went with the baked potato that is actually twice baked and very delicious. I tried not to complain to much to our vendor like we were ungrateful for him taking us out, but he was highly disappointed considering how much business they bring to George's. He asked to speak to whoever was in charge and our waitress pointed towards the bar and said "she's over there somewhere if you can find her." The desserts were decent ice cream sundaes and that's about how we ended the evening. The only saving grace for this dinner that took in the neighborhood for three hours to complete is that we had good company and that had nothing to do with the restaurant. Our vendor was a very gracious host for setting everything up for us, but George's struck out multiple times during the night. Needless to say, our vendor will taking their business meals elsewhere and for our next visit to Appleton, George's will not be on our list of restaurants to eat at. read more

The reason I gave this restaurant one star is because the web page won't allow me to proceed by rating it with 0 stars. I thought I was being pranked by some hidden camera show. While being seated, our hostess was complaining out loud and with profanity to us about a large group of older guests who were there for a retirement party. Not very professional. Our waitress and the hostess then proceeded to play some sort of game of follow the leader in front of our table while tossing a dinner roll back and fourth to each other. My wife ordered the Alaskan king crab legs for her birthday meal and sauteed mushrooms as an appetizer. The waitress delivered a bowl of cold and clearly canned mushrooms. When my wife pointed that out, the waitress argued with her and said that if they served canned food, she wouldn't work there. After 3 volleys of "yes they are - no they're not", the waitress begrudgingly took them back to the kitchen to have them warmed up, so my wife was able to enjoy microwaved canned mushrooms on her birthday. The crab legs were dry and crumbly, clearly fresh out of the freezer. My rib eye was stringy and clearly freezer fare as well. When ever the waitress would deliver something to our table, she would ask us if we needed anything else and when we said "no" she would raise her hands in the air and say "yaaaay" in some sort of mock cheer which at first just seemed strange but then came across as condescending. As we were leaving the dining room, the waitress knocked the plate with my half-eaten baked potato and unusually runny sour cream onto the floor and stared at it. As my wife works as a waitress and also would have had to step over the potato to leave the dining room, she bent down to help clean up our waitress' mess with her bare hands. Instead of cleaning it up herself, our waitress proceeded to take the cup of drawn butter for the crab legs, pour it onto her hands and rub it around while telling us what great soap it is. I'm convinced she was high. I can't make this stuff up. We went to the bar to pay our $109 bill and leave. As we were leaving the parking lot, my wife decided to go back in and talk to the manager. After explaining to him our experience, he told her that our waitress "must be having an off night". Not even an apology or a fake expression of concern. Here's where it gets bad. When we got home, my wife called George's to talk to the manager again and actually got the owner. Apparently, the owner was in no mood to deal with the likes of an unhappy guest and she proceeded to argue with my wife over the phone. My wife handed me the phone and I tried to explain the evening to the owner but she became very defensive and argumentative and kept interrupting me by saying that the waitress we had has worked there for 20 years and would never do what we said she did. She also claimed that my wife told her son, the GM, that we loved our food, which we clearly didn't. The phone call ended with her telling me that we we're just a couple of drunk freeloaders looking to get a free meal before hanging up on me. First of all, it's difficult to get drunk there as only a half of a shot goes into an old fashioned. Second, it doesn't make much sense to drive all the way from Winneconne to try to get one over on a restaurant. The restaurant owner reminded me of the restaurant owners on Kitchen Nightmares that are stubborn, combative, and convinced they can do no wrong. The decor was interesting, though. read more

If you are looking for the best steak and lobster in the area, you must go to George's. It is a typical Wisconsin supper club. Piano bar going on the weekends and great drinks at the bar. The only drawback would be it is a little tight in the dining room, but the food more than makesup for it. read more

I had a hard time deciding between 4 and 5 stars... went with 4 because the restaurant is so small that the tables in the dining area are a little too close together. The food is fantastic! I'm really picky about my steak and I have never been disappointed with one at George's. I thought the side dishes were great too! The bartenders and wait-staff are very friendly. Didn't care for this place much. First, my work friends and I didn't realize what "supper club" meant and no one bothered to tell us. Regardless, we were seated at a table right away. Our server wasn't very attentive - I had to ask for refills on my drink everytime. All 6 of us ordered various steaks and the waitress mixed them up when serving them. I was so impressed with the service and the food! The owner came over to chat with us and couldn't have been more pleasant. The wine list is outstanding and so well priced. Worst dining experience ever. We have never walked out of a restautant and this is the closest we've ever come to doing so. This place came highly recommended by friends and we were so looking forward to good old fashions and a good prime rib. We had 7:30 reservations and arrived at 7:00 for drinks. Stood at the bar waving a $100 bill for 26 minutes before a bartender served us. At 7:45 we checked on our reservation and were told it would just be a few minutes. At 8:05 the people that walked in after us with an 8 o'clock reservation were seated. My wife again visited the hostess and after a long apology assuring her that "this just never happens here", we were finally seated. Once at our table it was almost 10 minutes before we were greeted...people seated after us were already back from the snack bar. To top it all off, they were out of prime rib. The food was ok and I have to give them credit as they did comp our entire meal but by that time we were well past being appreciative and just wanted it to be over. What a disappointment. read more

We ended up trying this place last night as we were looking for a new steak place we haven't tried yet, and this came up on the search plus we live pretty close to here so we thought why not. We arrived about 6:30pm and it was an hour wait which was ok because we planned on sitting at the bar for a bit anyways. When it was time to be seated we ordered our food I ordered the prime rib and my fiancé ordered the rib eye. They were pretty much outa soup so we only got French onion. Our server seemed a bit scattered. She dropped a few things on our table and seemed overwhelmed with waitressing. The steak was brought out and it was cold but we didn't make a fuss about it because she never really checked on us until the end of the meal. I guess for paying almost $100 for two people to eat I expected a completely different experience, and we won't be going back. read more

Excellent prime rib and beef stroganoff. The service was ok. We were there for an hour and a half total. It took 30 minutes to get our entrees after we finished our salads. We were not told that there was a charge for another Coke. We were also not told of a $2 charge to get Caesar dressing because the salad was then deluxe. I only wanted the dressing. My family and I recently ate at George's to celebrate my birthday, and while there, a waitress spilled an entire glass of red wine on me and my dinner, ruining the clothing I was wearing. After the incident, my dinner was replaced, however we did not receive an apology from a manager or any form of compensation to cover the cost of the ruined clothing or a discount for the wine that we couldn't drink because I was wearing it.
