My family and I had a lovely dinner here celebrating my parents' anniversary! What better way to try out this restaurant than with their Houston Restaurant Week menu. First off, the bread and butter service was pretty neat. What we thought was the candle for the table turned out to be the dipping sauce for the bread (smoked beef tallow). I had the slab salad, the hangar steak and frites, and the pineapple vacherin for dessert. The slab salad aka wedge salad was amazing. I love a good wedge salad, and adore bleu cheese. The steak and frites were cooked to perfection and the fries were heavily truffled, and the pineapple vacherin was a beautifully presented pineapple sorbet. Service was very attentive. We had an excellent experience here for dinner last night; from service to quality to ambiance, everything was great. Our server was incredibly knowledgeable and was able to give descriptions of all items on the menu if we asked (and sometimes even when we didn't). Special touches abound like starting the meal with a hot towel service and a candle that turns out to be melted beef tallow for dipping their sourdough bread service in - how unique! Luckily, having a group of 4 allowed us to try and share lots of items, including: viet-cajun oysters, slab salad, long bone ribeye, TX strip, steakhouse helper, fried brussels sprouts, fried onion masala, banana pudding, and carrot cake. Add to that some red wine and you can imagine that it was an incredibly indulgent meal that was enjoyed from beginning to end. Standouts for me were the fried brussels sprouts, steakhouse helper, and the meat. The fried brussels sprouts were perhaps the best I have ever had, crispy with an excellent tangy vinaigrette. The steakhouse helper is a combo of various spare meat cuts from the kitchen, ground up and coupled with spices, pasta, and a thick creamy sauce - incredible. Both cuts of meat were cooked to perfection with an amazing crust on the outside. Our server was great, but we were extremely disappointed to hear when we went to order that they made a mistake with the dates on the menu and the special menu didn't start until the following night. All we were told was that he spoke to the manager about it, but we were not compensated in any way. For a mistake like this at this nice and expensive of a restaurant, we expected better. The ambiance of the restaurant is nothing spectacular for fine dining, but it is nice. Clean. Spacious. What I can't for the life of me understand is why they were playing 90s rock in a fine dining steakhouse. It doesn't match the theme at all. Anyway... There is valet available or you can park in the garage which is a bit of a hike depending on your shoes and the weather. Hosts greet you right away and were friendly. Opened the doors for us. We had a reservation and were seated right away. This was my first time visiting (Friday night at 7 pm). It wasn't crowded. Lots of seating remained so I'm sure you could walk in. Our server was friendly. But also seemed kind of tired and low energy as the night went on. Like he was slowly fading but still... the service was decent at the end and better at the beginning. The drinks were good. We didn't order off the cocktail menu but asked for a side car, lemon drop and French 75. The side car was made very well if you're into those (chef's kiss). I will say the drinks took a while to come out even though it wasn't that busy. Food: Sourdough came out with beef fat (or steak fat?) in place of the butter. You think hmm, okay but it was actually really good. Almost like dipping your bread in steak au jus mixed with butter. I had the ribeye which was pretty expensive. More expensive than any steakhouse I've been, and I'm a steakhouse queen. I also had the loaded potatoes and shared brussel sprouts. The steak was amazing. I would give this place a 3.5 out of 5 stars. I had high expectations, and they were not met. I would, however, come back solely for appetizers and the loaded potatoes au gratin. Food: Viet Cajun Oysters- 5/5! I am not a fan of oysters, but these were definitely something that I would order again. The lemon zest added a bit of a salty flare. Bone Marrow- 5/5! The pecan pesto made for an extra rich bone marrow. I loved the toasted focaccia served alongside it. Long Bone Ribeye- 2/5. Considering the price, I expected this steak to be great. We had requested medium rare, however the steak was mostly rare. When we asked for them to cook it a bit more, it came back well done. On top of that, there was hardly any flavor. Alex our waiter was phenomenal! He has extensive knowledge on literally anything I asked him about the restaurant or a dish. I've been to the new location twice now and it's been amazing both times! They even brought me fresh steak cut options to choose my own to my liking! The flavor is HUGE! Every dish is unique and tasty. I promise you if you get the charcuterie board just eat anything and everything on it no matter how "weird" it looks. You will love it. Ask the waiter what ways he likes to mix the things on the board to get an idea as-well! They have nice wagyu steaks as well as rare cuts that you won't find in some other places! The red snapper was also really good! As for the ambiance the place is very formal and fancy, but also relaxed and easy going. Nice daylight during the day, and low dim lighting at night. The location is also very nice and great for a date or family dinner. They bring you warm towels to wipe your hands with, then they bring a beef tallow candle that warms the tallow and once they bring you bread you can dip it in the warm tallow! It's an upscale/fancy restaurant that has valet and offers you wet warm towels to cleanse those germy hands as you sit down. We ordered King Crab, steak, oysters, potatoes, salad and 2 drinks. The drinks were tasty and strong. ALL of the food was amazing! It's hands down the best steak and most flavorful crab we have EVER had! The service is top notch. Magically delicious! GJ is an amazing, posh date night option with fantastic food & drinks! Georgia James steakhouse was recommended by a friend, so I decided to make the journey for a quick celebration. The entrance and parking areas are very limited, and it seems it's only valet (one-man running the valet). I had to circle around twice to find the entrance, and there was construction in one area. Upon entrance, you will find the hostess directly in front. The restaurant is quite big and open, very contemporary and modern, which is different from your traditional steakhouses. The kitchen and bar are to the back, behind the hostess. Georgia James is proud of its sources from 44 Farms in Cameron, Texas and Snake River Farms in Boise, Idaho. They also partnered with Atkinson Farms for local produce. FOOD: Viet-Cajun Roasted Oysters (3/5): We both expected a different presentation with this when we read it off the menu. There are 6 small oyster pieces that are basically in this "Viet-Cajun" flavored soup. These pieces are served on an interesting platter that allows the oysters to absorb flavor and spice from the soup concoction. I would not order it again for what this appetizer entails versus price and quality. I do recommend dipping the bread platter into the soup! Slab Salad (3/5, iceberg, black pepper buttermilk, tomato, red onion, shropshire blue cheese, benton's bacon lardons): The ingredients were fresh. The slab salad is basically wedge salad. I think there should have been more of the other ingredients added when compared to the iceberg. Brown Butter Roasted Mushrooms (3/5): This was OK. I personally felt it was lacking some flavor. Potatoes au Gratin (4/5): I'm not the biggest fan of potatoes au gratin, but this was one of the best ones I've tried. The top was slightly crunchy with a perfectly balanced cheesy interior. Fried Brussels Sprouts (4/5, creole vinaigrette, crispy garlic): This had great flavor with the vinaigrette. I would definitely order again. TX Strip Steak (3/5, wet aged, 44 farms, cast iron): It's similar to the NY Strip and is shareable between 2 people. Despite it being wet-aged, I was not impressed. It's not something I would come back for. However, I'll stick to the long-bone ribeye next time. The service was fantastic. Our waters and drinks never touched the bottom. The servers were personable and knowledgeable about the menu. If you are with a group of 6, then order the Baller Board, which is off the menu. I saw a handful of tables with this. Would I come back? We visited with a party of six to celebrate a special occasion. In advance we shared my food allergies and our server Alexander had consulted with Chef Matt before our arrival to come up with some solutions and understand what I may have difficulty with on the menu. Because we were dining early, they were even willing to make some off-menu dishes. Ultimately our group settled on the board which we learned was called "the big baller board." This is essentially the opportunity to let the chef shine and to taste a variety of steaks and other meats. In addition to the Porterhouse, Chateaubriand, Longbone and A5 waygu, our board included juicy fried quail and pork chops. I tasted everything but the pork chops but heard it was all good. The steaks all come cooked at the same level (medium as I prefer) but they did allow our party to request "+1" on pieces they wanted slightly more heat. I'm told the lemon drops were tasty. They also offer non alcoholic drinks. I enjoyed our starters, the favorite being the Viet Cajun Roasted Oysters. The steakhouse helper side didn't disappoint and all the sides were good (rice, Brussels sprouts, helper, mushrooms) but if I am honest, I would skip the mushrooms. The space is open and has clean design. The tables are far enough apart that you feel you can have intimate conversations with your table. We were treated well from start to finish. Hmm, I feel like some of the exemplary qualities of the old establishment got lost in translation, with the move to their new location. While we have previously been so impressed by the cozy ambiance, elevated service, and outstanding food experiences at the old Georgia James, the new spot missed the mark for us recently. The new building is beautiful, with a much more grand design than the last one... but the trade off is noisiness & crowding. Tables are too closely cramped together, it's too easy to bump your elbows into other patrons or squeeze into your chair (I'm petite at 5' tall, and I wasn't comfortable in my seat). We ordered our favorite items, but they were mostly a disappointment. The dry-aged Longbone was leaning more towards medium-well (we ordered medium-rare), and the cut was significantly smaller than before. On a packed Friday evening, the servers seemed extremely flustered, and it was difficult to waive them down amidst the commotion. They seemed over-booked & understaffed. The valet was very slow, manned by a very disgruntled young man. All in all, a blahhh experience. For us, the GJ appeal is lost... Feels like an exchange of quantity over quality, but I hope it's just transitional growing pains. I truly hope the owner/management sees this & takes my constructive feedback to heart. read more

Overall, I was not impressed. I have heard a lot about this place so decided to visit to celebrate a milestone. Parking - I think there is a parking garage nearby however, it looks like it is connected to residential, basically you have to valet park. I had a RSVP at 7 on a Thursday and was seated promptly. The service was excellent without a doubt the waitress did an outstanding job explaining the menu and with her recommendations. The oyster appetizer is excellent. Dinner, we had creamed collards, fried mashed red potatoes, mushrooms and long bone ribeye. I think the food could have been MUCH better. All the dishes had good flavor however were luke warm to cold. I was not able to enjoy the meal because the food was not hot at all. It was so cold I could pick up all the sides as well at the plate the ribeye was on with my hands. Typically, the dishes are so hot that you can't touch them. Also, I would have expected the manager to visit the table as they typically do at most decent restaurants, he never visited the table or any tables I noticed. Again, for $445 w/out tip for two, I expected a better meal. I did leave the waitress a 30% tip because she did an excellent job. Would I visit a second time. More than likely not. I went as a couple on the New Year's Eve and we were immediately met with hip hop music, which is not the issue that I have and would have honestly been preferable to what came after. We entered the building and as we were walking to our table we heard one of the staff say "Change the music". We were sat down and were met with their choice of new year's music which was a generic pop hits radio. I go to a nice restaurant on New Year's to enjoy a nice restaurant and enjoy the ambiance of a nice restaurant. I was expecting classical music or instrumentals and was met with something that would be charming in a mom and pop shop staying open to celebrate new year's with its loyal customer base, not in a fancy restaurant. Mr. Worldwide was not the vibe. I imagine if I had gone on a different day the ambiance would have been much better, I would hope at least. The second gripe I have is minor. I got as much water as I needed throughout the night and never had an empty cup as I would expect, however by the time we had gotten the check, my cup was filled bottom to top completely with ice. There was more ice in my cup than the cup could hold and if I had gotten 4 more ice cubes one would have fallen out. Very minor nitpick however, my water was just very cold. The filet mignon was great, the braised ribs with mashed potato's were okay, about a 7.5/10. The Mac and Cheese was more watery than I would like it to be. The Hearth Roasted Pork Belly came with radishes that were older than I would expect and only had 3 slices of pork belly. This is probably my favorite restaurant in Houston because the food is outstanding and the ambiance is beautiful; it never disappoints in that department. Unfortunately, the last 3 times I've visited, the service has left a lot to be desired. The last visit we were there for a little over 2 hours for dinner, not really by choice, on a week night. We were sat with no menus, and we were not provided menus or asked for our drink orders for nearly 20 minutes. I eventually had to ask someone to serve us. Then, in that 2 hour time frame, we were checked on twice after motioning our server over. I'd have more grace if the restaurant was busy,it wasn't at all. :( This has been our experience the last few times, and it just doesn't sit well with me when we spend over $300 every visit. For a high-end restaurant, I wasn't impressed with the corn that was served, it's more like a corn medley from Chili's. Beef carpaccio is not your traditional beef carpaccio. It had an Asian fusion taste to it. The waiter explained it was supposed to taste like you were eating at a Pho restaurant. Not exactly what I expected at all. The spicy margarita, and the pineapple vacherin dessert were the highlight of the night sadly. I won't be returning .... Save your money and go to Steak 48 or Mastros. I hesitate to leave a negative review after just 1 visit. It could have been an off-night. But then I spoke to another friend who went recently. She used to love Georgia James. I guess they changed ownership recently and all changes they've made have been negative. I was not impressed by the value, wait staff and food. I ordered a salad and it was abysmally small. Like the size of a side salad but it cost $16! I would rather go to Granger, where the salads are larger and more flavorful. I also got a raspberry tart that had the soggiest crust ever. The tart had split and was chunky and not smooth. I would not recommend. I also like having hot tea with my desserts. The waiter told me "we don't serve hot tea." Really? It's just hot water and a tea bag. I've never come across a restaurant in Houston that doesn't serve hot tea. We were also not impressed by the steak. There is much better elsewhere. With so much competition in Houston, I don't know how a restaurant like this will survive. On a random note, at some point during the restaurant, when my water was not being filled quickly enough, I had my reusable water bottle on the table. The waiter asked me to remove it from the table top. I guess it was offensive to their restaurant aesthetic. I really wanted to like the food at Georgia James but I just couldn't. The exterior of the restaurant is really classy and elegant. Located in a posh neighborhood near Upper Kirby Houston, it is enclosed by a nice apartment complex and surrounding high end businesses. There is complimentary self parking in the nearby shared garage but you can valet as well. Greeters immediately opened the doors and warmly welcomed us in for our reservation. The atmosphere was of course, an inviting white tablecloth occasion without seemingly being pretentious. Maybe the pop rock music in the background helped lol. Our host was so helpful with explaining all the menu items since it was our first time. It unfortunately disappointed when our food actually arrived. We ordered the gulf coast oysters and the oyster meat looked quite small. It was mostly oyster juice, which I'd have to say was really fresh but bland and I didn't get any of the actual oyster. Luckily, the tangy lemony sauce that came with it complimented it well to give it some seasoning. It also came with unlimited butter crackers, which honestly, was the highlight of the night if I'm being honest. We then had the TX strip steak precut and ribeye. My date's ribeye was okay, though again he said it was on the plainer side, but still it ranked wayyy higher than my order by far. My TX strip was super bland and it looked passed the point of being made well done. It tasted like I was eating burnt chewy pieces of beef jerky. Mostly salt and grease and not a lot of texture. There are too many steak restaurants in Houston that are equally priced to receive this kind of quality so I left the restaurant very impressed with the staff and appearance but sadly displeased with my dinner. Decided to have dinner here to celebrate my husband and I 9th Year Anniversary. This is a steak restaurant that is farm to table with portions that are big enough to share. This was my husband's second time dining here and this my first. His first time dinning, him and his party ordered a board and he stated they enjoyed everything on the board. The food and wine was very good. We ordered a bottle of the Corazon Del Sol 'Los Chacayes' Malbec, The Slab Salad, Classic French Onion Soup, Fried Holmes Chicken, Fried Brussel Sprouts, Smashed & Fried New Potatoes. Great restaurant. I know this spot is a temporary location for them but it' makes for an intimate dining experience. We started with two dozen oysters. The gulf oysters where so much better than the east coast. They where nice and briny. So we splurged for the baller board for 6 people. It is expensive but it is an experience. The a5 wagyu was of course exceptional. Unlike omakase menus in my experience where you might have a miss with a particular dish, this doesn't have that. It is an omakase dinner at a steakhouse. The board consisted of bone marrow, dry aged bone in ribeye, wagyu sirloin, their spin on a hamburger helper (ridiculous), snapper (lighter than beef so it was much needed), lobster with lobster stuffing (great!), fried chicken (don't discount the chicken at this steakhouse!) and every side imaginable. I've been wanting to get to Georgia James since they moved to this new location and it was worth the wait. Known for their dinner service, we were lucky to catch them for brunch on Easter as this isn't a normal offering! what we got: cinnamon rolls w/ blueberry compote gulf fish chicken fried rabbit & waffle slab salad smashed & fried new potatoes loaded potatoes au gratin pork belly benedict fried holmes chicken brown butter roasted mushrooms every single thing was good! We were a group of 7 and we all enjoyed what we had. Service was okay but not terrible.
