Len and his team are amazing! I made the mistake of buying a Porsche Cayman online, sight unseen, and without a PPI... Needless to say, the seller didn't disclose all of the damage and "Mickey Mouse" work that he had done to the car, specifically the engine headers and exhaust. Upon arrival Len and Webster took the time necessary to assess the situation and provided me with a complete estimate of the work that needed to be done. Along the way, they found several other concerning things and recommended that they be addressed as well. Unlike most shops, Len sent me pictures of the damage, and repairs along the way. He even would call me with updates and answered the numerous "stupid" questions I had since I've only owned BMW and Mercedes in the past. I can't say enough about how awesome my experience was at GAC. If you need ANYTHING from a simple oil change to a complete engine replacement, do yourself a favor and call Len. I feel like I have let Lenny down by waiting so long to get this review written but here I go. My 2008 Cayman went down with what looked like a bad battery. After trying for an hour to follow Porsche's procedures to access the battery and failing I called GAC to get a tow. The problem is that with a dead battery the hood release will not work to access the battery, etc and thus we were unable to straighten the front wheels (electric assist steering, locked steering column, etc.) to get it on the flatbed. We called Lenny with the problem and he drove all the way to SE Austin at 8pm on a Friday to help us sort it out. We spent nearly an hour wrestling with the car til we worked it out. I have driven German cars for nearly 30 years in Austin and this was far and away the best example of customer service I have experienced thus far. Greediest, most inept auto repair in many years of my having different cars repaired. I called recently to find out what they might be able to do regarding the same problem they were supposed to have fixed last November -- less than 9 months ago. I was told it would take "a couple of hours of diagnostic work" to figure out what was wrong -- although I have already narrowed it down to two possible parts. And, of course, who would pay for this couple of hours? Me. The bottom line on this place is that it is living off an old, old reputation, developed when it was in its first home in another part of Austin years ago. Today it is very expensive, the ownership / management holds customers hostage if they want their car back; and their work is short term at best. Best advice -- look somewhere else. read more

The needed repairs were clearly explained to me and an accurate estimate was given. I authorized the work and my car was ready 2 days later. This place does a fair job for regular maintenance (oil and filter). For repairs, it is better to get them done in a dealer than here because the prices are similar using the same OEM parts, but the dealer offers car rentals and other perks. Update 7/6/2017 I had to take my Mercedes back because the service warning remained. It turned out that it wasn't done, although it was requested; they should do (even if not requested after seeing a service warning) plus other repair items for a total bill of $1,400. The service was checked off with an additional charge. In a related note to a separate maintenance service on Porsche, the warning message for both windshield wash and coolant fluid (very low) came on after a few weeks. I thought this place could be used as an alternative for services at a dealer, but the experience was "not recommended". read more

My 2014 BMW X1 was leaking from the valve cover gasket and needed repair. The initial dealership estimate for replacement parts and labor was close to $3,900 for everything they recommended (my purchased "extended dealership warranty" doesn't seem to cover much at all). Needless to say, the German Auto Center was able to quickly diagnose the problem and they replaced the valve cover and gasket for a fraction of the initial estimate. Their honesty was refreshing. They even threw in some preventative maintenance repair as a bonus while the car was there, saving me valuable time. This was my first experience with them (I picked them based on other reviews) and I was impressed with their customer service and with the quality work performed on my little BMW which I will need to keep for a while. I dropped it off in the morning, they gave me a ride to work, and the car was ready by 5pm! They were responsive, gave me updates and they made the car repair process smooth. We surprised our 17 year old with a 2001 325i last fall from German Auto Center. He had saved his money since he was 8 years old and had $4000 to put down on the "car of his dreams". German Auto Center came highly recommended by my father-in-law who has used them for years. We asked the owner to search for an older model BMW at the auctions where he buys the cars he sells. Within about a month he turned one up. It looked good and the price was right even with the extended warranty. For now, I give this place only 2 stars. One for finding the car we asked him to find and second for having a great service department. Yeah, the car has been in 3 times since we purchased it and the cost has been over $2000 added to that "great price". And the last time we were there the service guy told us the bushings were going out. Oh, and that "extended warranty"? Forget it. It has been of no use. read more

I took my Mercedes E500 there because I heard a knocking sound at the right front of the car when going over bumps. They charged me a $85 diagnostics fee - then told me that the engine hangers needed replacing. Trusting them from reviews, I told them to go ahead - even though the almost $900 bill was a bit of a shocker. It did not fix the problem, but since they couldn't find anything wrong with the car, I assumed it was nothing serious. Then my car started to sag. I took it back (another $85 diagnostics fee) - they told me they couldn't find any leaks in the air suspension - but that the rear right air shock needed to be replaced. Then the right started to sag - and then they told me it was probably the pump going bad. I was losing confidence in these guys in a hurry - so I took it to the MB dealer instead. Not only were they completely wrong with their diagnostics (there WAS a major leak in the FRONT right suspension), they also missed that one of the front arm ball bearings was completely worn out - which is what was making the knocking sound I had told them about in the first place. I could have had a major accident if the front arm would have collapsed - not to mention all the money I wasted taking my car to these Yahoos. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY - THESE GUYS DO NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT MERCEDES BENZ! read more

Pro: Nice people and I do like that they have a driver to drive you to and from the repair shop. Cons: They charged me a $120 diagnostic fee which I was not expecting. Then they offered to credit me back $100 of it if I came to get my A/C fixed within the same month. The total to get my evaporator core fixed would be $2,100 so I wanted to get an estimate somewhere else. So I swallowed the $120 fee and moved on. Uptown Auto Repair quoted me between $1500-1800 and didn't charge a diagnostic fee. This was my third time coming to them to fix my 2005 BMW X3. When they fixed my rear brakes, I had to go back because they were screeching. They told me this was because the parts were damaged in transit to their repair shop. Seems like they shouldn't have used them in the first place but they did re-fix it for free. read more

I took my Audi A4 to German Auto Center for the first time a couple of weeks ago, after my last experience getting an oil change at Jiffy Lube ended in total disaster because they failed to re-attach the (girl terminology disclaimer because I don't know the official names of car parts) "heat shield thingy" after they finished their work. I called GAC over the weekend and was easily able to make an appointment for that same week, and they have early morning availability starting at 7:30, so I wasn't even late to work. I was in and out in an hour as promised, and the staff were helpful and courteous. They also forewarned me about the next couple of milestone services I will need so that I can plan for them in advance. My total bill was $120, which is definitely not cheap, but it's also about $20 less than I remember paying at Jiffy Lube, and my car drove away completely intact and running well, which in my opinion made it completely worth the investment. Shortly after my appointment, I received a letter in the mail from the owner thanking me for my business and giving me a 10% off coupon for service, which I may use soon since I know what else I will need to fix in the near future. I will give them a solid 4 stars for this initial interaction and hope that I'm eventually able to raise it to a 5 based on other services beyond an oil change. read more

Review for: Scheduled Service. I recently decided to take the plunge and move away from the dealership here in Austin for my Mercedes as its now out of warranty. After talking with several coworkers and perusing Yelp, I settled on German Auto Center. While I didnt meet the owner when I dropped off my car, he made it a point of introducing himself and giving me his card when I picked it up. [it has promptly been placed in the glove box.] Thanking me for the business and his general demeanor was certainly a nice touch compared to the attitude one receives at our local dealership at times. They've followed up with a phone call and today I received a letter in the post again thanking me for my business. Its the little things that matter and make one want to support more small businesses. In this case, German Auto Center went well over the top. In terms of the service, it appears to be all completed correctly. The car was left in the same condition I dropped it off w/o any sort of grease here and there. Overall I was satisfied with the service. The price was significantly less than what I would have paid at the dealer. I dont like to go too much into discounts that shops are compared to their peers on here... as to not pin them in the corner. Suffice it to say, my wallet was certainly not as light as it would be at the dealer by a significant amount. Overall, I plan on going back for my next scheduled service; knock on wood just the standard A/B service and not a costly repair. At this stage, I would happily recommend them to my friends and family (and of course yelp.) Thanks. read more

I found German Auto Center on the web, searching for a place that can work on my 1976 Mercedes 450SLC. I keep it in top shape; it's not a clunker or junker, it's a classic that I choose to drive (and spend a lot on maintenance) because of my love for the cars. Here's why I called German Auto Center (text taken directly from their website): "Whether your car is a late model daily driver or a classic that you drive for fun, we'll keep it in top shape for you." I took this to mean that they could work on my car, it being both German and a classic, but alas, they don't work on cars older than 20 or so years old, I am told. Which means they don't work on classics. The very nice guy on the phone referred me to a couple people pretty far from Austin that can work on it. Hopefully they will update the website to specify that they only work on late-model vehicles. Rating them "neutral" at 3 stars, since I didn't actually have any work done by them and they WERE kind on the phone. Just note that German Auto Center, which claims to work on classic German cars, does NOT actually work on classic German cars. read more

Had an appointment at 10am, I called at 2pm to check on an update. They informed me that they still haven't had a chance to check on my car, finally by before 3pm I receive a call. I was informed of the issues/potential issues with my car which would have to wait till tomorrow to get repaired to due it being so late in the day. I asked if I could pick up my car today and give them a call by the end of the day with a decision to give them the go ahead. They said they needed to know Now! or my car would go to the back of "the line" to get repaired. Which I thought was unreasonable, I admit I don't know much about cars but I like to be informed when making a decision and they weren't giving me that chance. I quickly called another shop in the area and asked for a quote because I felt like I was being pressured by the german auto center to give them the go ahead to repair my car and that made me feel really uncomfortable. Sure enough I am glad I didn't because I was quoted half the price elsewhere. So I just decided to pick my car up immediately. I knew there would be one $54 fee but when I got the shop I was charged a $127 fee that I wasn't informed about. Very sneaky. I get it they are a busy shop but they might want to work on their customer service area and maybe even be a little more clear on the fees/quotes given. Sorry but I don't believe I will return to the German Auto Center, I really would have loved to have had a better experience here. But we live and learn. read more

This is long overdue. I took my car here for a Check engine light. The 1st time-incorrect diagnosis charged over $800. 2nd time-incorrect diagnosis charged over $1000. 3rd time (NOT KIDDING) incorrect diagnosis and an estimate for over $800 to fix. Took the car into Mercedes and was given a diagnosis within an hour stating it was the gas hose bib. I did not believe Mercedes at first because they ran a smoke test to determine the problem. I had just paid German Auto center to run a smoke test and they stated it was something else. Regardless Mercedes got the car fixed the first time I just wasted a lot of money, time, effort and stress with German Auto Center. Save YOUR money, time, effort and stress and go somewhere else. These guys either don't know what the heck they are doing or they are Crooks....I think it's both. read more
