First visit yesterday. Mid-morning and they weren't busy, which was why I decided to stop. Had apple strudel and coffee, both of which were good. In fact, I was really pleased to actually get a good cup of coffee, so rare. The strudel was really delicious; lots of fruit, nice pastry and not too sweet. The dining room is very clean and attractive. The only down part was that the guy that served me never came back to the table to check in, give me the check, nothing, so that was disappointing as I would have liked more of the good coffee but finally left. read more

If you are into desserts, this is the place to go! Famous for their cakes. The previous owner, Gerry Frank is the Chocolate Cake contest judge at the annual Oregon State Fair. Current owner(s), previous employees continue the tradition. Good for lunch or a chocolate fix with coffee. This place is pricey. It wouldn't be so bad if it was actually good. I have been a loyal customer for the past 3 years but today was my last time buying something there. Their cakes are always dry and tasteless. The birthday cake taste like the cake mix you buy at the grocery store. They sell left over thin and dry slice for 3$. It's not worth the price in my opinion. I used to go a lot, but now i find that im paying a little too much for not much. It seem they sell you a thinner slice now for the same price. NEW OWNER, She is an old employee who thought she could run a business on her own. The selection looks old, one cake was toppled over in the case. An employee was rude to me while leaving the establishment. I called the owner the next day and she backed up the employee. I ended up hanging up the phone because it was going nowhere. A male called my number back from caller ID and streamed a load of obscenities. I will not be going back. Sort reviews by stars. The same complaint keeps coming up. The employees are unprofessional and the Owner believes the employee is ALWAYS right. I give this dwindling business 2 more years before Gerry Frank's reputation is completely ruined and the establishment goes under. Woohoo! As good as it gets! For Salem that is. I have buying cakes here for almost twenty years and have never had a bad slice. The staff is genuinely eager to serve (most of the time). It probably gets rough for them when they have to serve the likes of Katharine H. with her NY attitude and vile NY manners. Who else would come 2500 miles to gossip about a person they don't know other than a New Yorker. What a hag she must be! We tried two cakes - and angel food raspberry & a chocolate ganauche. Both were pretty good. I would prefer a smaller piece for less $$ ($5.85 per piece), but, whatever. The coffee was good, too, maybe we just hit it at a good time., but I am a coffee snob, and this was fine. The service was all by very attractive girls who seem to think they can get by with inattentive and unimaginative service because they are young & pretty. I live right in between Portland and Salem. I wanted to try out a Cake place without the wait that I'm used to at Papa Haydn. I will say that I like their cake better than store bought, but it's not nearly as good as Papa Haydn's. I think it's probably a bit unfair to judge them in comparison with such a high standard. However, since either place is about the same travel time and cost I'm going to plan on PHs next time. read more

My family and I used to come here all the time, then when I went off to the University of Oregon we decided to make it for special occasions. I've always had good service there, but lately when we have gone there is a red-headed woman that works there..and she is just so incredibly rude. I've talked to management about her, I don't know who she is, she is ruining the atmosphere and what it is about. My dad and I had lunch last time, and she didn't even seat us, someone else did. Then instead of being polite she said "so you guys ready yet?" We ordered...it took her a while to deliver..and before we could ask if we could get any salad dressing..she just walked away knowing we were trying to get her attention...for the next 20 minutes she didn't even bother helping us, she looked at us so I know she saw us waving to her...we had to have a waiter help us. Terrible terrible service. I noticed that her other customers, she didn't even bother helping either. I know even if you hate your job, and/or you're having a bad day, you suck it up and do your best. However, she is like this...ALL THE TIME. So we stopped coming here. My other friend works there and she is the sweetest girl, if it wasn't for her, we probably would've gotten up and left. This redheaded girl is just...incredibly rude, has no manners whatsoever and I don't know why she hasn't been fired from the start, but she should be. Apparently talking to management, they told my dad and I that this isn't the first time management has had complaints about her. Lastly, she didn't even deliver our check..we had sat there for another 15 minutes..and the whole time she didn't help us and we were seated in her section. We went up there, left the money and walked out...simply terrible service. As for the food...it's not superb, it's mediocre cafe food..however..the desserts are the reason why people go. They have a large selection of cakes, cheesecakes, and cookies for Salem, but I've been to dessert shops in Portland that have a lot more of a selection, even in Eugene. I love coming here for get-togethers and family time, it's a very quaint and small delicatessen, but it has a nice feel to it. Note: I've noticed a few people complain about the price, but if you go to Portland in their cafe's in the pearl, you will notice that for 5.95 (slice of cake at Konditorei) you will get a muffin there. So the price really isn't that steep. Consider this..if you go to the Beanery in Salem, you can very well spend over 5$ for a flavored latte. read more

It wasn't horrible by any means, they had good cake but this place is super overpriced. I had the vegetarian sandwich which was $8 for unspectacular whole wheat bread with a few slices of veggies inside. Afterwards my boyfriend and I split a slice of the German chocolate cake, which was good but to be honest I thought about the slice of chocolate fudge cake I picked up from Safeway last week for $2.59... the Safeway slice tasted better, was more moist and chocolatey even a couple days after buying, and was more than half the price! We tried to get in to have dessert tonight for my sons birthday (party of six). After waiting for 25 minutes we asked the waitress if we could sit at three of the two seater tables as several people came in while we were waiting buying out the desserts. She explained that she couldn't let us do that as "it would disrupt the flow of the tables". After another 10 minutes, and several more "sold desserts" we left. Horrible experience.!!! read more

When yelping, this establishment is listed as the #1 gluten free bakery and gluten free desert restaurant in Salem.. but they don't have a single gluten free option. There are however two "flourless" options, but nothing is 100 percent certified gluten free.. besides this, the family thoroughly enjoyed their treats! Found this bakery while on a trip to Oregon from Phoenix. It was a great experience. The young lady who waited on us was perfect and guided us, while being very patient while we checked out every item in the cases. We ate breakfast and then chose the chocolate raspberry cake, the coconut cake, and the coconut brownies to eat later in the day. We loved every mouthful of the cakes and brownie. I love this place. I like to take friends on their birthdays and see their eyes get wide as they take in the amazing assortment of cakes and sweets. There are so many different flavors of cakes and cheesecakes, I try something new every time I go. I have never ordered anything other than dessert or coffee though, so I cannot speak for the dishes on their entree' menu. I will say that the cakes are much fresher earlier in the day, and you can get the last slices of each flavor for cheap around 8p when they start to wrap up for the night. They may be a little on the drier side by then though. They also have smaller versions of the most popular flavors in the case near the door, and for $22 you can have a delish dessert to bring to a friends birthday or housewarming party. The lemon bars remind me of my Mom's, not quite as good of course but probably the best store-bought one's I've ever had. And the mint brownies aren't bad either. read more

I was having a bad day and my friend and I decided cake would make me feel better. It totally did but the service at Konditorei made my day better too. Our waiter, Zach, went out of his way to provide genuine customer service with a smile but also made an effort to rectify my bad day. I probably embarrassed him when I announced to all the ladies lunching that he was pretty awesome. My hope was to generate more tips his way! :D Seriously though, the food and desserts are delicious at Konditorei but the experience was beyond memorable.
