Gerry's Grill in Union City is honestly the best Filipino restaurant I've had so far. I always come back for their crispy pata, pork sisig, and lechon kawali--all so good. The bangus is tasty too, though it can be a bit dry on some days. I've also tried the grilled squid, fried calamari, beef sinigang, pork BBQ skewers, and halo-halo, and everything's been solid. My go-to orders are the pork sisig, crispy pata, and garlic rice. Ambience and space are great, service is decent, and wait time is reasonable. Definitely coming back. I used to frequent this place often, because of the portion size, and the live weekend bands after a long day at work. I was having an adobo craving, so me and a friend popped in afterwork on Thursday eve. It was a slow night, so service was quick and fast. I ordered the chicken and pork adobo, with adobo rice. My chicken was cooked perfectly, but this time the pork was a little tough in texture. I figured maybe after I take the leftovers home and warm them up later, the pork would soften up. Came by on a rainy Sunday around 2 PM, and the place was fairly empty--which was actually quite nice. The restaurant is spacious and well-suited for family gatherings or parties. On top of that, the food was solid overall. I ordered the Crispy Pata and the Sizzling Bangus Sisig. The Bangus Sisig wasn't quite to my liking; I've heard the Pork Sisig is much better, so I'm looking forward to trying that next time. I give this place a solid 3.5*, food is good, service is weird. And the ambience is nice for a more formal dining experience. On our trip here we got the sizzling pork sisig and the bangus (milk fish) sizzling sisig. The obvious choice was going to be the bangus, very flavorful. We also picked up some garlic rice. Unfortunately, my gripe with this place isn't the food itself but more of the portion size for what you get. I felt like we got 80% of what their picture on the menu is for the food. Both dishes came out way smaller than what I thought for $22 each? Huh? I will say that this place is a chain, but there's much better options in my opinion for food especially in this range. There was just miscommunication when husband spoke to a young kid in charge of cleaning the utensils to ask for boxes to go. Then the kid said " i dont speak tagalog" when he spoke to him in full english. So my husband got mad at him for not listening and told the other staff that he is mad at my server named Ann because she was busy with other when we need boxes. So i was confused why Ann kept apologizing. Been here twice with my family to celebrate special occasions such as Mother's Day (which was the most recent visit). If you're someone who's not been to the Philippines or tried authentic home cook Filipino dishes, this can be consider a good place to visit. I haven't been here for years! It's been maybe, 20?! I suggested going here before our J-Hope concert in Oakland. I remember their adobe shreds was so yummy so I told concert crew, let's go! I haven't been to Gerry's Grill in a long time, so I must say it has gotten even BETTER with how much their food is packed with flavor! First, let's start with our excellent server who is Vietnamese and knows the menu very well and impressed us with the Tagalog words she knows! To start, she recommended the calamari, extra crispy, and she wasn't kidding! The batter was perfect, not greasy, and went well with the sweet and salty creamy dipping sauce. We also ordered our fav beef kare-kare, bulalo soup, and pinakbet, all of which we have enjoyed many times in the past. Their bulalo isn't fatty, which we appreciate, and it's packed with beef and veggies like cabbage and green beans. Their bulalo is food for the soul! My family ordered chicken ba-mi (pancit Bisaya) and after my first forkful, OMG, the noodles and mix of flavors made my palate so happy that I paused and soaked in all of the flavors, before exclaiming, "WOW! This is now my favorite pancit!" I had bangus ala pobre for the first time and this fish was filled with such strong flavors, that capture the uniqueness of Filipino cooking and each bite was flaky. The aroma and beauty of this dish brought me back to similar bangus cooking from my grandmother and mother and my palate and belly were so happy with my mother ordering this dish for me to try, so I could experience the Gerry's Grill version. I highly recommend this bangus ala pobre! As a final act for this savory feast, we had room left our bellies to share halo-halo. Their halo-halo is made with soft, snowy ice, topped with creamy ube ice cream and leche flan. The snowy ice made it especially enjoyable and fun to eat! Came here on a weekend afternoon and the place was packed with families celebrating birthdays, TVs playing sports, and a line at the door. They have an electronic check-in system that texts you when your table is ready, which made things easy. The vibe is very Filipino bar and grill with loud energy and big groups everywhere. This restaurant was clean and modern with a lively setting when I came by to order a late dinner to go this past weekend. According to a poster on the wall showing the entertainment lineup for this past month, apparently they have a few bands that regularly perform live music here. Altered Native was up on stage during my recent visit, playing covers like Everybody Wants to Rule the World by Tears for Fears and Madonna's Borderline... which would have been cool, except the volume was really loud, creating a deafening noise combined with the echoey chatter among guests, I couldn't even hear myself think... so it wasn't exactly pleasant. Even though the place was quite packed, I had no problem placing my order with the hostess not too long after I arrived (around 8pm). I was quoted 25-30 minutes for takeout, which I thought was reasonable for a single item on a busy weekend. However, this SLOWLY turned into an absurd wait time of almost an hour... for ONE entree!! I waited longer than dine-in customers waited for seating, that is ridiculous! They obviously don't have an effective system for getting orders out, or the staff working on Saturday night was incompetent. It wasn't until I told the hostess that I had to leave, that she finally went to the kitchen in the back and grabbed my order. It was all wrapped up ready to go, so I wonder how long it had been sitting there. I'm appalled that they couldn't at least quote a more accurate and honest wait time... so unprofessional. Plus the small portion for the bistek pinoy dish was definitely overpriced. The taste was decent, with flavorful sauce, meat, and onions, even if a tad too garlicky. But definitely not worth the wait, especially when everything else about this place sucks... the crowds, the service, the lack of a logical system for helping customers, all of this a reflection of the management so that must suck as well. Nothing really to over the top. I normally don't like going to big corporation Filipino restaurants like Gerry's Grill. If I wanted Filipino food, I would rather have a home cook meal or go to a mom and pop restaurant, at least I know it makes me feel like my own family made it. Maybe Gerry's does chop up jalapeño in theirs but this was the first place that didn't. I remember it used to have more flavor before Gerry's became huge. We love our sinigang, but this one was not really all that sour, nor did it have a lot of soup. My photo shows that there is a lot of soup, but that is because the pork pieces underneath were in kind of huge piece. Some people might want more of the meat, but sinigang is known for that sour soup base. When asking very nicely if we could get more of the soup base because when we all split it evenly, there was barely any soup i our little bowls. Our server told us, no because it is measured. I get it, if everyone kept asking for more soup then there will be a lot more of the meats, but they could have said it in a much nicer tone, or at least say sorry we can't and then explain why. Nothing special about the squid. It was good, a bit chewy, but it might be because the big squids like that are more on the chewy side. My cousin loved it though. The best part of our meal was the chicharon. Nothing to complain at all with that dish. It was nice and crispy. Food is decent, but that is only because I am Filipino. Today was a miss the pinakbet had crunchy vegetables, but it was not cooked right it tasted like they did no let the vegetables simmer with the sauce so it was not as flavorful as the first one I tried , Last time . Lived in the area nearly my whole life, so why was it my first time visiting this place? I was shocked to see just 2.9 stars for this place before my first visit, could it be that bad? After my experience here's my assessment for a very busy friday evening: 1 star for the nearly nonexistent service. Good luck trying to get servers to help you. We fortunately sat at the bar beforehand and the bartender was friendly. We sat down at a table once it was ready, and she ended up taking our order after we waited over 20 minutes. No other server came by to introduce themselves whatsoever. The table next to us had a hard time flagging down a worker. It was very busy for a Friday night, there was a live band that started close to 8pm. The whole restaurant was packed, I think they were severely understaffed making it difficult for folks to get their orders taken, or close out the bill. You'll have to build good rapport with the workers to get special treatment. It took us a long time to get our tab closed. My husband had to flag someone down for several minutes. We sat waiting for close to 30 minutes. The lady seemed a bit irritated and rushed. I think this spot could improve by implementing a QR code and take order via phone, then close out via phone. Having this option will alleviate the workload off the servers. As for food, it was a solid 3-4 stars depending on what you get. The best dish we had was grilled chicken skewers - super juicy and tender chicken. I was shocked how it wasn't so dry, I suspect they souvide it then grilled it. Nonethless it was so good! Loved the lumpia shanghai, fried calmari, and chop suey. I wished they didn't add too much pork in the chop suey. Not much vegetable options though, but this cuisine doesn't really have much of that option, fyi. The pancit palabok was a bit more fishy than the ones I'm used to. I usually like coming to Gerry's Grill. Food is always pretty good and good portion sizes. However this last trip, the service just wasnt that great. Waiter was nowhere to be found most of the time, and when we were trying to get the bill and to go boxes, we could not find him, so i had to get my own boxes and ask a different waitress for the bill.
