Amongst the sushi spots on Piedmont ave., this one is more like a to-go/eat quickly restaurant and it's best to go during off-hours because it can get really busy. I used to frequent here for a quick lunches and some of my faves are 49er roll (California toll with salmon and lemon slices on top), rainbow dragon roll, shrimp tempura, chicken karaage and sashimi. Just like how it is in the photos, this place is a very small restaurant. The atmosphere is warm and cozy. The sushi bar has about four seats, and there are about four or five tables to sit out in the entire restaurant. Let's talk about the food. The sushi was very delicious and filling. They have many different rolls, with lots of options. Some of the food items are repetitive on the menu such as spicy avocado tuna roll, spicy avocado yellowtail roll, and avocado roll. Although I ordered a lot of those items, and they were very good, the menu was repetitive. They did have specialty rolls that I didn't notice were on a separate menu than the menu that is on the table. The best roll that I had was probably the baked scallops roll, spicy yellowtail avocado roll or the dragon roll, both were very delicious. The fish to rice ratio is definitely proportionate. The service here I would say is really good. We were able to sit at a table with in about 20 minutes. There were two of us in our party and we had one that was maybe coming in. They sat us at a table for four people, and we ordered a lot of sushi. The sushi that we ordered took up the entire table. So naturally we were surprised when our friend walked in and sat with us - then we were scolded by one of the female waitstaff at the restaurant. I found that to be pretty rude, her scolding us - while we are paying customers. We ordered about $100 of sushi. We ordered green tea and the staff was very quick to clear our table or fill up our tea the entire evening. The food came out very quickly which is always appreciated. I think we waited about 15 minutes at the most for our first roll. Another thing that I have to add in just to spread awareness for other people that are visiting this restaurant. I was visiting from out of town and I normally do not go to Oakland. I was parked in the parking lot behind the restaurant where a lot of other cars were parked. I really didn't think it was a dangerous parking lot, but my car was broken into. When we were waiting around for police to show up and to deal with the damage, the locals told me that there are break-ins in the parking lot multiple times a day. If you are coming to this restaurant, BEWARE OF THE PARKING LOT. Try to park on the street where there is well lit parking and cover your valuables. Overall, I would say this is a good sushi restaurant, and very fair prices. I don't think I will ever come back because of how dangerous this area is. Before Covid, I had only been to Geta once. It was great, but we had children and the space was small, so we only were able to stuff ourselves in once. Now that we're in the end times, this place has been our go-to, because we've been able to enjoy it more than we could before. We usually get a udon or donburi to feed the kids, a sashimi combo, and a roll in case we're still hungry. They do a good job of spacing out the line, and our order has always been complete and well-packed. Of course, the fish itself has always been super fresh even after taking home and prepping the table at home. Our toddler and preschooler, respectively, both love the tempura and miso soup. This has allowed us a little taste of what we were missing -- both pre-covid and pre-children. Geta is a small and fast pace restaurant. I think they would do well if they expanded and opened a larger location. I do like the vibe of their current location, a lot, it's small and personal. I do not recommend a party of 4 or more as seating is very limited. Food and drinks here are fantastic and the staff works very hard and efficient. If you ever eat inside, watch their staff, it's rare that anyone would be standing around. Next time I come here, I would either come solo or with one more person and try to sit at the sushi bar to watch how the sushi is made. There is a large selection of food to pick from. Menus are set in each place, but the majority of fare can be found tacked to a board right next to the cash register. More dishes are handwritten on sticky notes and stuck in odd places around each table and bar seat, which oddly gives the place a genuine, naive sort of feel. The stream of to-go orders is endless once the place opens, which is understandable considering waiting for a table can be lengthy and frustrating. The only difference is Jiro is dreaming about making it, my aspiration is just to eat the little nuggets of joy till my gut looks and feels like a sumo. That being said I fulfilled my dream in ordering pretty much one order of each of the nigiri. I ordered: Hamachi, Tobiko, Hotate, Maguro, Shiro Maguro, Unagi, Ebi, and a Dragon Roll. All the nigiri was good not great. But for $3.95 each and $2.95 for the Ebi, the price was right. The Dragon Roll at Geta was the disappointment to me. Even though it's almost half the price of others sushi joints, I'd rather pay the extra amount for a better dragon roll. The guy next to me ordered the Chicken Teriyaki Bento Box which looked worth trying next time I come. The service was friendly and semi-fast for how full this little restaurant gets. One tip is if you plan to dine-in, go early. Arrive about 15 minutes before opening to ensure a seat. Definitely not top quality but I'm sure that's not what Geta is aiming for. Ordered a bento box with Tempura and Chicken Karaage which was really good! The tempura was very fresh although the tempura batter could have been even lighter! The chicken karaage was very fresh and well fried. The house salad that came with the bento box was made using the greenest portion of the lettuce...no light green lettuce for Geta!!! The miso soup was good..although Gombei in San Jose tops the list for miso soup!!! The only downside is the wait-time is usually pretty ridiculous if you go during peak hours. The boyfriend and I had tried visiting Geta on multiple occasions but were just too hungry to wait 45-60 minutes. So we returned at a later time when we imagined there would be less people -- about an hour before their closing time, and there was STILL a wait. Albeit, the wait time was much shorter. And the wait was well worth it. I love sashimi. LOVE IT. Unfortunately, my boyfriend isn't as big of a fan of it as I am, but he sucks it up and usually lets me indulge. We ordered a Rainbow Roll, Dragon Roll, Lobster Salad Roll, and an order of toro and blue fin tuna. The fish was so fresh -- the quality is comparable to some that I've tasted in much more expensive Japanese restaurants. You can tell that the ingredients are of good quality and are the real thing. Luckily the share a parking lot with CVS, so you don't have to resort to just street parking. Once we got there we put our names on the clipboard outside the door (we were about the sixth name down). The wait was about twenty-thirty minutes. When our name was called we were seated next to another couple who were almost done with their meal. After a few minutes I had to stand up to let the woman next to me leave and then I had to get up again to let the new woman who was being seated next to me in because it is so cramped in there. My s/o ordered a beer and I just order a water. My water was a small glass filled 3/4 of the way up and that was all of the water I received for my whole meal. I saw another patron getting up multiple times to fill up his own water from a pitcher in the middle of the room so maybe that is the policy now? We both order Sashimi Combos and shared a Rainbow Roll. I noticed that the prices went up. The Sashimi Combo was not as good as all of the other times I have ordered it and the Rainbow Roll was underwhelming. I honestly think we will just be ordering takeout from here from now on if we are really craving some Geta sushi. Having to get up not once but twice during my meal, not having my water refilled, the higher prices and the people (waiting outside for a table) staring at us while we are eating has made me dock Geta one star. We were the 2nd party and decided on counter seats. Glad we did because it's always pretty cool to talk to the sushi guys and get some insight on what they recommend for the day. We ordered assorted nigiri items ranging from amaebi to toro to amberjack. I really liked how our sushi chef placed our nigiri on a plate in a specific order. He asked us to start with the first row and work our way back. The fish was pretty fresh although not the best quality I have ever had. The rice needed a little more vinegar but cooked well, nonetheless. I did think that the fish was cut way too small and thin. We asked for a couple of recommendations on a roll and he made us negihama. I appreciated the simple maki but was expecting something a little more complex. Still good anyhoo. The waitresses were a little slow with tea and water refills. With 3 of them in a small restaurant, I was hoping they'd be a little more on top of things. When I think of my recent visit to Geta, what stands out is how bustling and popular this restaurant is. There was a small line of people waiting to be seated outside (and from what I've witnessed on other nights walking through the neighborhood, the wait can be extensive), and the cramped interior felt like Geta could barely contain all of the customers eating inside. There is seating at both the bar and at tables, and you should definitely get comfortable with bumping into or jostling the people next to you when you get out of your seat. The fact that this place is so packed made me think I was in for some amazing sushi. Unfortunately, the food turned out to be just average. My friend and I tried the amaebi nigiri, and while the shrimp tasted good and it came with its customary fried shrimp head, I've had better representations of this dish in other restaurants. We also tried the saba (I believe it came in a roll), which was good (but how can you go wrong with mackerel?). The salmon teriyaki came with rice and salad, and I wish I could say I remembered more about it than just what it came with. Checked out this hole in the wall. Food came out super fast. I got the nigiri sampler and while the fish was fresh, the proportions were all wrong--very little rice and way too much fish. My son got tempura udon, and the tempura batter was a bit too think. Miso soup tasted fine, but it didn't feel good to see it poured from a jug. I get that this is Japanese food, but it didn't taste authentic to me at all. Not sure I'll go back. read more
