This place used to be my Go-To spot for lunch when working on Piedmont Avenue because of the affordable prices. I've since moved and changed jobs, but always tried to visit when I was in the area and craving sushi. The prices increased significantly and the owners seemed to have changed too? I wasn't used to seeing the higher prices for sushi and it was way overpriced in my opinion for the ambiance/style of Geta, so I ended up ordering the Karaage Don... and IT. WAS. DELICIOUS! I plan on coming back to order sushi next time and give them a chance. read more

Check out a great local restaurant in the area. Ordered a few dishes and did take out because of this whole Covid-19. This place is usually really busy, and our friend recommended it so I'm excited to eat. You call to order and when you arrive, just remember your face mask and one person inside at a time. One of my all time favorites, simply because of their spicy crispy chicken don. Maybe 5-6 years ago, I could get a massive box of the chicken and rice for $10-11, but now it's more like $16. Which is fine, but just limits how much I come by. The chicken is always delicious and the spicy crispness on top makes it elite. Always will be back! read more

This place is solid! I don't know about the complaints about it being worse. It is the same as it ever was--splendid--and definitely worth the wait. We like to get there early to beat the rush, like when they open at 5 p.m. They currently have a free appetizer special (agedashi tofu or fried fish cakes) if you get there between 5 and 6. There are maybe 4 tables and a bar, so it really is a hole in the wall. The best thing about this place is that they offer many different fish or parts of fish you can't usually get at other sushi restaurants. (You can get it elsewhere, but for a lot more money, and usually you have to drive farther out for it.) I appreciate that variety and value. Most of the unique items are drawn on cute little signs. The menu they give you has more of the typical fare from Japanese restaurants in the U.S. My favorite is the amaebi because they fry the shrimp heads for you! One order comes with two shrimp nigiri and two shrimp heads. Between the slippery raw shrimp and the crispy heads, it's a textural contrast and absolute delight. I kind of like that the heads are pokey and pointy and a little dangerous; they taste so good and full of umami. After eating these, I start to feel full and realize I've ordered too much but forge ahead anyway. The cuts for the nigiri are super generous so you get a lot of bang for your buck. Lots of real estate to chew and ponder. I like to leave the soy sauce off the first bite, and then decide if I need it in the second bite. The staff is super nice and attentive, but not overly so. They don't mind when I ask them to remind me which fish is which. One day I will learn them all. Bring cash or pay a small fee on a credit card (it's really small, so don't fuss). read more

I came to this place very long time ago, probably 10+ years ago with my mom and really enjoyed how homie the place was. Today, I tried to get into some kind of line to even get into the restaurant and the waitress dismissed me when I came in because she tried to see if I was a takeout order. She said there were two people in front of us. She started to write down a name for me and said my name wrong and asked for a phone number. After butchering my name I tried to give her my other party members name and instead of trying to write down a name or number after she shooed me out. Another customer comes in and sits at a table with two others who have finished eating and just orders. Another customer walks in and immediately just sits at the counter. I don't understand what the miscommunication was and I wait outside for another 20 minutes and the same waitress just continues to prioritize phone orders. Two customers leave and we wait another five- ten minutes and no one even moves to clear the area. Unsure if the food has changed or what the quality is like, but the service was so unbelievably bad I'd never come back. read more

Geta is good. Small restaurant with lovely decorations from Miyazaki movies such as soot balls from Spirited Away, doll figures from Princess Mononoke, figures from Totoro. The wait is always kind of long. It took my party about 30 minutes to be seated and there is no Yelp Waitlist. There is good and attentive service. We ordered Salmon Belly, the famed Lion King roll, Miso Soup, and Chicken Karage. Salmon belly came with 2 pieces and was good. Lion King Roll came out to be kind of spicy sauce (sort of tastes like Safeway Lion King if you'd have that, but better). Miso Soup was very delicious and Chicken Karage was decent. I'm glad to have tried Geta since it was on my list, but probably won't come out often, only if I'm in the area. read more

Geta is my go-to place whenever I need to satisfy my sushi craving. It's a tiny establishment so I'd recommend coming before the lunch/dinner rush or just place an order to go. Either way, I can always count on Geta to serve some of the freshest fish in town. Items I keep reordering because I can't get enough of it: sashimi combo, any of the nigiri options(especially the toro), lobster salad roll, dragon roll, 49ers roll, salmon kama (it's made upon ordering so it usually takes ~20-30 min). I've probably tried everything on the menu and there's literally not one thing I didn't like. In addition to their melt-in-your-mouth-sashimi and other fresh ingredients, the prices are more affordable than other sushi places in the area. I'd call this a win-win situation! read more

I ordered the 49er roll and it was just disgusting to say the least. The salmon were random cuts of fish that tasted very chewy - some pieces were thin and some thick. Totally understand that they can get away with this because I ordered delivery, but still. I ended up throwing most of the roll away and vowed to never go back to Geta even if they were giving out free food. Oh and the real crab was mixed in mayo and dried..I can't even explain the taste, but definitely not REAL crab. Maybe they can relabel it as pseudo real crab. Or imitation real crab. Heck, imitation crab might have tasted better. I honestly gave Geta so many chances to redeem themselves, but they have fallen short too many times. TIP - Do not order any salmon rolls, chicken teriyaki (burnt, dried and flavorless), or anything that claims to have real crab. Adios, Geta! read more

This is one of our go-to spots for takeout. The restaurant is way too small for the kind of crowds they get so takeout is definitely the way to go. I like to live on the wild side and usually call in during the last 15 minutes they're open. (They close early, at 8:30PM.) We can get there in less than 10 minutes and our order is usually already waiting. There is always, always a line and with the prices and quality, I'm not surprised. I've even tried the same sushi roll (the 49'er - salmon and lemon on top of a fresh crab CA roll) at other places and they just don't even come close. Their curry and katsu is another winner. And I like to get their veggie roll or umeshiso to round out. Yum. Be nice and they might even throw in a free Pocky for dessert. ;) read more

Came here for an early dinner on new year's eve. It was packed! We walked in at 5:10ish (they open at 5pm) and all the tables were close to full. Luckily they had one table left for 2 ppl so we were seated right away. They have really fast, friendly, and attentive service for a small restaurant churning out a ton of to-go orders. I was pleasantly surprised that they kept refilling our tea and checking on our table. We ordered the hamachi avocado roll, seaweed salad, tonkatsu entree (comes with miso soup) and amberjack nigiri. I was hesitant to order the nigiri because it was a little pricey ($7.50 for 2 pieces) but I didn't regret it. They put a thick piece of fish that wraps around the rice on the nigiri so it's actually very worth the price. Everything else we had was really good - tonkatsu was crispy and flavorful and hamachi roll came with a tasty spicy mayo sauce that went really well with it. read more

Geta has been the go to spot for sushi in Oakland as both a sit down pre-Covid and takeout during Covid. Thank you for being a survivor and continuing to offer great selections of sushi, sashimi, noodles, random stews, and more! Somehow there's been a transformation - although prices may have doubled since pre-Civid, they've made it up with larger portions so do take caution in the amount you order...or just order everything and have it for multiple meals. Also pay in cash to avoid the credit charge. Long lines, cheap sushi, fast service. Haven't been here in a while, but not much has changed. You go to Geta to get Japanese food on a budget. Their real california rolls are $4.95 and their regular are $3.95. Bento box combos are $10.50. Highly recommend getting their teriyaki chicken over the beef. The portion of beef was literally 5 thin slivers--totally not worth it. Their tempura is ok, but there are a ton of fillers like a quarter of an onion. Their lion king roll is also a hit or miss--sometimes it's delicious and other times it's way too saucey and the bottom half is cold (like they used a premade sushi roll). No complaints about the service. Service here is quick and all of the waitresses are friendly. read more

We ordered some take out from Geta a few days ago and were very impressed. You get a great bang for your buck, and the sushi is solid. They also gave some We ordered a bunch of sushi, and the grilled kama. The kama was super tasty, perfectly salty and super moist on the inside, just how I like salmon. For sushi, we ordered the salmon avocado roll, rainbow roll, rock n roll, the 49er, and the baked scallop. It was all so good, but my favorites were the salmon avocado and the 49er. The rice was cooked well, and the ratio of rice to fish was perfect. A lot of places put too much rice, but I really liked the fact that they didn't put too much. All in all, give this place a shot, you won't regret it. read more

This place was my go-to Japanese restaurant for a very long time. I grew up in Japan and enjoyed Geta's homestyle Japanese food and affordable but high-quality sushi and sashimi. However, I feel everything has gone downhill since Chef Ono left. The food quality is not that great anymore, but the price keeps increasing. It is not the same Geta anymore. Sad. read more

First time back here since the start of the pandemic. I remember this place being decent, reasonably priced sushi but clearly things have changed. Today I ordered the sashimi combo and the fish was not only poorly prepared but it was still frozen! Here is a picture of one of the pieces that was completely inedible. The combo cost $31.00 (if you pay in cash) for this terrible fish plus some dry sushi rice and miso. If you want good sushi I suggest going to Judoku down the street which charges $4 more for their sashimi combo for an exceedingly better quality product than Geta. read more

This is the worst sushi restaurant. We ordered the Nigiri sampler, chicken teriyaki tempura platter, and the chicken teriyaki gyoza platter. The fish did not taste fresh and the tempura was beyond greasy. I would not come back and definitely do not recommend. read more

Great restaurant! Restaurant: First thing to note is that this restaurant is SMALL... you should go here with no more than 4 people in your party. You have to wait outside the door, please don't leave and come back after you name is called. Other people are also waiting. We witnessed several people in one night come back and say their name wasn't called. One couple was waiting too far away from the door and didn't hear their name called(we heard), then proceeded to get mad at the restaurant for 'skipping them'. Another couple left and came back and said their name wasn't called... please don't do this, it's rude to everyone. Food: We love the food here. We have ordered salmon Kama, veggie rolls, croquettes, green salad, gyoza, and various nigiri. Everything is always great! We would love to try some Katsu here but every time we go we can't pass up the Salmon Kama so it always wins over the katsu. read more

It's cheap. It's fast. It's Geta. It's where I'd take my pre-teen nephews for a cheap date. It won't give you a fine dining experience, but it makes my kid nephews happy. The quality is not-that-bad. It's pretty good, but I don't normally go for bento or rolls unless with my kid nephews. I also had their sashimi, amaebi and uni sushi. They're good quality. Despite the crowdedness, tiny space, and obsolete decor, which normally would compromise the quality, I have not gotten sick from eating here. They apparently have stocks at Berkeley Bowl :-) I tried the sushi burrito. I highly recommend it for budget sushi burrito for an afternoon snack, or a hungry-and-broke meal. I think it has enough nutrients you'd get in a meal. It's so dense! The place is small, and parking is limited. Many people come for take-outs. I would not recommend it for a big group (8+), but I think they would accommodate it. read more

Unagi-don - wish the unagi was hotter (warmer that is), it would be better; a bit too much rice, BUT the rice was definitely flavored for sushi (+!) Clean bathroom (!) Improvements: Lukewarm tea in small cup Busy place after 7 pm and I was there on a Tuesday! Of course, it IS. A small place with about (4-5) sit down tables and (4) sushi bar seats. $ (vs $$) probably based on individual sushi pair prices and rather misleading as any meal will easily cost more than $12. read more

This is probably one of the best restaurants for sashimi in Oakland that I've had! My friend and I shared the sashimi combo which has a good variety of sashimi including salmon belly, lobster with uni, hamachi, tuna, conch, etc. The sashimi was very fresh and melted in my mouth! In addition, we also got a rock n'roll (unagi) and spicy avocado and tuna roll. Both rolls were solid. The staff was efficient and attentive! Food comes out very quickly! However, please note that although the atmosphere is very cute, it is very TINY! The place gets crowded so I would definitely recommend coming early or be prepared to wait! read more

Was gonna try out a conveyor belt sushi place in SF, but I got lazy to drive far so I ended up at Geta today, but then it was some what hard to find parking around Geta, and the experience wasn't very good so I guess I should of work a bit harder for a possible better dinning. I ordered my food at Geta over the phone, got there like 16 min then I have to spent like 10 minutes looking for a parking because this area is always busy both day and night. I had a teka, hamachi (I ask for no avocado, I don't know why they don't have it with green onion, the way I like, like the other places), burdock root rolls, an avocado roll, and a miso soup. Both teka and hamachi tasted alright, not sure if it was the heat outside that made me lost my appetite or if it because the fish wasn't very fresh this time. The burdock root came looking like some carrots roll with some cucumber, I thought they have serve a carrot roll but when I Google it up, I think they probably pickled the burdock in a tumeric salt brine which gave the orange ish color, the burdock roll got a nice crunch, and the burdock itself have a little salty flavor, it was okay, so was the avocado roll. The Miso was nice and salty, paired well with the plain avocado roll. So for 1 geta, 1 hamachi, 1 burdock roll, 1 avocado roll and a miso my bill came at 24 something with gratitude it was 26 something, don't even know why I left tip for a togo, I probably should stop doing that, and they could of give me a better togo bag instead of some clear plastic bag that turn me off right away. read more

When you're craving that sushi/sashimi fix you better come to Geta. While the wait to get inside isn't always the quickest thing, the service once you get seated is. Luckily it only took us about 30 minutes to get seated. It's located near Piedmont so there are tons of shops/places in walking distance to check out while you wait. Geta is a small location with only a few bar seats/tables inside - very similar to sushi places you'd find in Japan. At first you would think that it would be cramped, but they do very well making it space efficient without feeling crowded. I CAN'T STRESS ENOUGH HOW QUICK THE SERVICE HERE IS. HOLY MOLY. From the moment we walked in we were asked what we'd like to drink and within another minute asked what we wanted to order. We ended up getting: - Spicy Hamachi Roll ($7) - Huge fan of Yellowtail so this was a win in my book. The sauce they put over it is just the right amount of spiciness that doesn't overpower the rest of the roll. - Side of Teriyaki Chicken ($6) - Perfectly crispy, coated, and portioned. - Chef's Special Sashimi ($16 - comes w/miso soup & rice) - Not the best sashimi i've had but the fish tasted super fresh. To get my order within 5 minutes is nothing I can really complain about either. I would definitely come back to order all of the 3 dishes above. For the quick service, affordable prices, and fresh fish, this place can't be beat. They do a lot with the space they have so come check it out! It seemed like a lot of people order to-go and that seems quick as well. *If you're looking for toro and other appetizers be sure to check out the stickers they have near the bar to see what specials they have! This is probably one of my favorite sushi restaurants in the Bay Area. Parking- There is a quite large parking lot but it seems to be always full. Size of the restaurant- It's really small so you need to be ready to stand in line for a while (but the wait is so worth it). I seem to always sit at the sushi bar. Food - You just HAVE TO get nigiri sushi from here. Their toro is amazing. Kurodai, sake, hamachi, iwana, amarbi, and ika are all so good. I highly recommend all of them :) read more

We got to the restaurant around 5pm (opening time) and the place was already completely full. it was about 30 something minutes later that we got our seats after registering on the wait list. Geta has been on my list for a long time. This small space comes with a wait time, but we were lucky enough to only wait a few minutes around 12:30 on a Friday. We had to try a little bit of everything. The tea and miso were quality so we knew the sushi would be delicious. The nigiri and rolls were GREAT. So fresh. My better half said "stupid fresh." We had to wait a little while for rolls, but the server was quick with our miso and nigiri. He was very attentive, poured tea and removed plates quickly. This little restaurant has that well-loved, hole in the wall feel. Another great date spot. No TVs. Bathrooms tucked around the corner. I would not recommend for groups larger than four. A number of solo eaters seated quickly. Decidedly the best north Oakland sushi spot. Hands down. The pocky with the check sealed the deal. A must that's on par with SF. Win for Oakland. read more

*update I gotta dock stars because they're no longer a bargain. All their prices went up drastically since I started going. IE. a Philadelphia Roll went from 4.75 to 6.95. That's the case with most of their sushi now :( they have all these great 5 star reviews based on their old prices. Hmmmmmm..........????? So is it really worth it now for the super long wait to sit down and be crowded by all the employees walking around or eating right next to strangers or even worse right next to the bathroom?? I don't think so. Now they're just like any other sushi place but super crowded? If im gonna spend more money I'd rather eat somewhere I can sit down have a nice meal without feeling squeezed like sardines. Too bad they were really my favorite read more

Amazing! My new favorite sushi spot. I rarely go out to sushi bc it is just so damn expensive and I have been making it at home for about 3 years and have gotten pretty good it myself. That said, I think I might retire and let the folks at Geta take over. Their spicy tuna roll was incredible. For under $4 you get huge pieces of tuna, not the mushed up stuff like at other pieces, beautiful whole chucks of tuna. The spicy sauce is blended with rice and just a bit is added so it is not overwhelmingly mayonnaisey, which I hate. Then just to really make you get excited they put seaweed salad as well instead fo the normal cucumber. The best spicy tuna roll ever! I also order the sake nigiri and dragon roll. Both were yummy and again large portions of fish. My boyfriend also ordered the chicken teriyaki tempura combo bc normally he has to eat a ton of sushi to fill up. Well not that the tempura, chicken, miso, and rice weren't delish, but there was no need for it. The sushi was so filling that next time we will only order sushi. I am extremely disappointed with the service at Geta. This restaurant has been our go-to Japanese place for a long time since it first opened. Even during the pandemic, we continued to support them by ordering food. Today, I walked into the restaurant and requested a table for two, explaining that my husband would be joining me shortly. The waitress rejected my request, stating that their policy doesn't allow it. I offered to order for two people since they were closing soon, but I was rejected again. I expressed my frustration, explaining that I would pay for the food, and my husband was on his way. Unfortunately, they remained inflexible and unfriendly. I even spoke to the owner, who shockingly suggested that if I didn't like their policy, I should not come back. This is not how a business should be run. It's an unfriendly attitude towards loyal customers. Their policy seems to prioritize rules over customer satisfaction. Despite the service, the quality of the food has also declined. This will be my last visit to Geta. The food and service have deteriorated significantly. I won't be returning or supporting them in the future read more

Geta charges crazy amount with credit cards the waitress did not specify and as well was pretty bad attitude. There is this one specific guy there that is super aggressive. He has like brown dyed hair and when I had a problem with my food he wa super snooty about it and said it was my fault. I order the same thing every time and was super specific about it as I have an allergy . I wouldn't just let it slide and I even double checked with the girl that took my order and when I asked her she said I never said that to cover herself. I have a sever allergy and I know I wouldn't order it with that. Anyway The staff that make the sushi is great the guy that helped me was terrible. He maybe was having a bad day because He was super ride to a woman that had the same problem and brought back a roll, she was so sweet and even offered to pay for the new one they made instead of switching it. He grabbed her sushi and threw it on the floor and yelled at her that she never says "not spicy" on her roll and it was super uncomfortable so when I had my issue he was probably just over it. I came here with my two kids and when I had a problem with an order as one of my kids doesn't like spicy mayo I asked if we can make sure not to have it on the sushi roll he was almost manic like in his response to me. Took my old roll and grabbed it out of my hands and freaked my kids out. I apologized and he went on to say it was my problem and I didn't say anything when I know I did. I ordered over the phone and we were super excited to go to Geta as it has been awhile due to pandemic and our schedules and it turned our experience into something so traumatizing. The sushi has always been great as well when we got home to check our order they left out soup, chopsticks out tempura on top of the experience we had. It wasn't worth me going back or making a fuss as he was so scary with just the spicy mayo incident. I don't know his name but I feel Geta should do better in customer service. Bad, bad! Okay I have come here for years and most recently like the other reviews had a bad experience with one of the workers. My sushi I ordered had so many issues and I was really cool and calm about it. One had hair in it whittle the other had frozen gosh that smelled pretty bad. I asked them if I can have another roll just avocado instead and tempura and had no problem Len paying for it. When I got there the owner or dude that works there made it seem like it was MY problem and I did something to the sushi. He was ride, laughed in my face and then went ahead to say every time I'm here there is a problem. Now listen, I have never once called and complained ever! It's always usually so great. But just like another person said he used that line on me and I felt so shamed! He was so mean, he has like brownish blackish hair and in the end he threw my food in the garbage aggressively and got too much that I had to call my husband because it was so bad. I don't ask for much as a customer. Just be honest and fair. Last call usually means for everything (food & drinks), so I order another hot sake with my food. You tell me to order the food now and I can still order beverages later. I finish my sake and I ask your server for another large hot sake, she says sorry last call was 10 minutes ago, the kitchen is cleaning up and there is no more hot sake. I ask you to check with the other server because she's the one that told me I can order more later. Now she saying the same thing...WTF? Is today the first day you closed at 9? You should know when the sake gets put away, you should remember I wanted to order another...There's only 15 customers between 3 servers! I came all the way out from the City and waited 30 minutes to eat here. I should have gone with my first instinct and kept driving to Berkeley and get treated right. This place seems like they first opened today with the lack of communication between their staff... The prices here are low. I guess I got what I paid for... read more

If you're more into simple sushi dishes (i.e. nigiri, sashimi, maki without intricate rolls) then GETA is the perfect place for you. Also, if you like robata and other cooked Japanese dishes. I've been going to GETA for the past four years and I've never been disappointed by the food or service. The staff are so attentive and experienced. GETA is ALWAYS bustling--if you manage to swing by for lunch without a wait you're considered lucky. And if you get the sushi lunch special before it sells out then you're even more lucky. That said, I think GETA is overpriced--particularly the sushi. I know the quality is amazing but it physically pains me to order the chirashi bowl because of how overpriced it is compared to other notable sushi restaurants in Oakland / SF. Despite this, I still love going to GETA. I think they've mastered their rice and their sushi chefs really know what they're doing. Also, they have the best wakame salad I've ever had. read more

Update: husband and his friend he plays tennis with recently went here even after my experience. We are part of the "older" community and when they went geta made it pretty tough on them. Maybe it's new ownership but the same guy I had an issue with treated my husband friend so badly. He wears a hearing aid and when ordering geta I guess repeated back the order Nd when he couldn't hear the waiter and said "what?" The man that took the order got impatient and yelled and said what's "wrong with you, why can't you hear." And said "hurry up." They ended up being so upset they got up and walked out before they put the order in. It's really unfortunate this man is able to treat people so poorly. I really am upset! I won't be returning my husband won't be returning or his friend and his whole family who have been coming here for years! There is manpuku and Izikaya which is great as well! read more

Geta sushi is a hidden gem in Oakland! This charming spot may be small, but it's big on flavor and personality. We were seated at the bar for lunch, and our server was quick and friendly, making the experience even more enjoyable. The menu is extensive, which can be a bit overwhelming at first, but once you select a few dishes, you'll realize that each one is a winner. Cute little Japanese restaurant off piedmont. Really fresh and delicious fish. Had the toro (fatty toro) that just melts in your mouth. At first I was hesitant since it was $13 for 2 pieces but it was totally worth. I recommend it if it's fresh (it was one of the specials that day bc it came fresh) and you haven't had it before. They were super busy and the place is really small. Waited a while for a table, but I thought it was worth it. The rolls aren't super pretty, but the ingredients are fresh and the rice was on point. Karage was really good too, crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Really cute place, and I loved the hand drawn menus at each table. Will definitely be back for some good sushi! read more

I really enjoy this place. It's generally pretty busy in the evenings, but they have great deals so I understand it's popularity. Never had any problems with the freshness of the fish. The rolls are the most inventive, but they're consistently good. I suppose that's what you really want in your "neighborhood" sushi place. There's a lot of sushi restaurants close to this place... but I always think twice about them because they're never really worth the difference in price. I love great sushi, and while Geta doesn't always deliver 5 stars... the other places around Piedmont definitely don't consistently deliver just 4 stars and they charge much more. So this is my first time visiting a sushi restaurant in maybe 6 months. The last time I went to some low key place in the city I got food poisoning. Geta really was a great first step to start eating sushi again. It was very well priced, I mean a group of us ate for under $50. The sushi itself was good and creative. I usually appreciate restaurants that spend a little extra time to create art with the food. I must admit that the kara-age is amazingly delicious. All of us had a good time, so I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a good, Cheap, hole in the wall sushi restaurant. read more

Wow... I can't believe I've never reviewed this place. If I want good quality sushi and for an awesome price, this is my place to go. It's a small hole in the wall and you have to get here early or else you will be waiting a long time. Not a place for a big group, at most 4 people but it's still Worth it. I would recommend the Maeve, spider roll, and the sake. Everything else is great but I usually order those. Although I've only checked in 2x, I've eaten here way more than that. As far as the food I would give it a 5 star, but because it's so crowded, cramped and there's usually one server I gave it 4*. read more

I've been here couple times because of all the hype on yelp but really the quality of the fish is bad. If you are a real sushi lover you would tell of the quality. I see that people mainly come for rolls or bento and the prices maybe compelling but wow i ordered a roll and if you see the inner fillings they add rice to it to make it seem like its big and full of something. Typical rolls have rice on the outer side and inside filled with crabmeat or avocado. But they don't think we know that they secretly add rice in the inside. Not worth your time waiting for a seat in such a small restaurant! read more

Are you kidding me? This place serves BlueFin Tuna -- and people here are actually buying it?? Ninety percent (90%) of the world's bluefin tuna stocks have been eviscerated by the global appetite for sushi, and it's because of the greed of the public, sushi entrepreneurs, and the lack of any sense of ethical responsibility to Mother Earth, the bluefin species, or our future generations. I am disgusted at this restaurant, and I am disappointed that Yelpers glorify the Geta Japanese for serving this highly endangered -- and soon to be extinct -- species. read more

I have gone to this little hole in the wall maybe 3-4 times in total.Unfortunately, this will be the last visit as I have noticed a very racist undertone towards Blacks it seems EVERY single time I have gone. Perhaps I should bring this to the attention of the owners, still somehow I get the feeling it will fall on deaf ears, we'll see. You may be waiting 15 minutes for a table but it is worth it! This place is a family run restaurant and it offers some of the freshest sushi at an unbeatable price. If you like to sit down at quiet, relaxing restaurants - this is not the place for you. This hole in the wall offers only five tables and a booth area. However, once you get a table your sushi will come out pretty fast. They make it right in front of you and it tastes like they just caught the fish that day. They aren't open on Sundays so get your sushi fix during the week or Saturday. read more

Long wait. Okay food. There's really nothing special about this popular joint. It seems like they will forever have limitations for expansion due to their location so the wait is obviously not going to get any better. Be prepared to stand in the hot oakland sun and be late for work. Or better. Drive another 5 minutes towards Berkeley and eat at equally good Japanese food without that much of a wait at Manpuku. Overall. Reasonable price for a college quality sushi but no one is going to pay for that 45 minutes you spend to wait for it. read more

Gets is awesome and the only place to get sushi in Oakland if you want to spend less than $20 a person and enjoy every bit of it, but more importantly not get sick! I love geta and it is probably the best date night you could ever have. The fact that there is always a wait makes it feel exclusive and gives you some good talk time outside. Once you get in the few seats and close quarters make it feel quite intimate and quaint. And the price means you can look like a baller and not actually break the bank read more

What makes this place so special is their fish supplier, famed Japanese fish concierge Hiroshi Hasegawa. He's known for sourcing rare and unusual fish that are rarely sold commercially, and he sometimes even free-dives to catch them himself. Sushi Salon is currently the only restaurant in the United States that he supplies, which means you truly won't get this exact experience anywhere else. The rice alone deserves its own praise. The vinegar they use is only supplied to a select few in the U.S., and in my opinion, it was the best sushi rice I've ever had. I could honestly eat the rice on its own. The space is incredibly intimate, with only seven seats per seating at 5:00pm and 7:30pm. Watching each course being prepared right in front of us made the entire experience feel personal and immersive. Every piece of fish was excellent, but the standouts for me were the saba, uni, medai, ninjin, and kegani. Joji Nonaka and Anna Osawa were wonderful hosts. They engaged with guests throughout the evening and shared thoughtful insights and history behind the fish and techniques, which made the meal even more meaningful. Parking was surprisingly easy with street parking nearby, though the surrounding area feels a bit gritty, so I wouldn't leave anything visible in your car. At the end of the omakase, you're given the option to order additional pieces or specialty items not included in the set menu. I highly recommend taking advantage of that and trying as much as you can. Overall, if you're looking to splurge on a truly unique and elevated omakase experience, Sushi Salon is absolutely worth it. It's special, intimate, and unforgettable.
