Had an incredible first experience here. My wife and I had the nicest waiter and loved getting to talk to him. We got the hawks garlic bread, carbonara, pasta and scallop Julio special, and Parmesan cream sauce tortellini. We loved everything but really enjoying the scallop special and tortellini. The carbonara is great as well but it does a robust pork fat/smoky flavor. Not for everyone but I loved it while my wife was a bit over powered. Giacomo's food is truly divine, traditional, not trendy, Italian. I have never in all the years I have been here had a bad meal. Last night, I had the Branzino with lemon caper sauce and a seasonal salad that came with it. I started with the chilled ratatouille, which was terrific. I wanted to order a gallon to take home! The brazino was prepared perfectly, and I ate every bite. My husband had the trout, which didn't have a side, and although he had ordered the beet salad to start, he was still starving. Note-if you order an entree, be sure to ask if anything comes with it. We ordered a baguette, which was hard and dry. The service is always professional and informative. The wait staff is experienced and passionate about the food. It is lovely to hear the waiters describe the meals with such detail and passion. Ok, here comes the negative. The physical space is awful. The tables are linoleum, as we had in our kitchen in the 70s. They could at least put tablecloths on them. There is a main dining room and a small room in the back, as well as outside spaces. The small room has old AC vents blowing everywhere, and it is super uncomfortable. The main dining room is tacky art deco and not appealing. I don't mind authentic spaces, but this one is just incredibly unappealing. The acoustics are horrible. There was a family with a couple of small kids that were allowed to scream at will for 1 1/2 hours. Two elderly couples near us got their meals and left immediately. One couple took their food to go. The children were running around, getting in the way of the waitstaff. Our waiter, in fact, apologized to us twice, even though we never said a word. I strongly feel that it is management's responsibility to manage the environment so that it is a safe and enjoyable experience for all. If you want your kids to run around and scream, there are restaurants for that. I hope the management sees this and corrects it. It's impossible to move to avoid the noise as the restaurant is small and the acoustics are horrible. We would have stayed for coffee and dessert, but it was just so unpleasant. We came here for dinner the other night having not been to the restaurant for several years. We tend to forget about Giacomos as an option because the only way to make a reservation is to call the restaurant. Upon checking in, we were told that we couldn't be seated until the rest of our party arrives which is always frustrating when you would like to go ahead and order drinks while waiting. The waiting area is also overrun with cardboard boxes filled with wine, like hoarder lever quantities. I understand that they don't have a ton of space and probably don't want to pay for offsite storage but it's not a great vibe. Once we were seated we were able to order a bottle of wine. Our server was very nice and well intentioned but anytime we asked a question when she came back with the answer she would respond back to the wrong person. She just seemed a little spacey. We ordered several apps for the table and while they were tasty for the most part they weren't beautiful to look at (which is fine). For my main I ordered the pollo giotto which turned out kind of rubbery and tough. I had a bite of the tagliatelle bolognese and the carbonara which I found to be both bland and a little too far past al dente. In my opinion, the way to go is the hanger steak. That used to be my go to order and when I had a bite of my husband's I found it to still be on point. Overall I found the restaurant to be extremely loud with food that I wouldn't want to come back for. That being said, the restaurant was at capacity on a Friday night so there are many people that obviously wouldn't agree. You can only be here an hour and a half. (After being in Italy, you know this is not legit) We were not able to sit at corner table because we had to be out in 30 minutes. We sat down and waited for a long time for our wine. Meanwhile, they sat a family with a loud child in table we wanted. The food has changed so much. It is nothing like the first time. We were celebrating my friend's engagement so we asked them to take pictures. Giacomo's is on Westheimer with a great parking lot in the front and back for all of their guests. When you walk in there are tons of fun wine options to choose from. We were a group of six without a reservation and were seated promptly. I can tell this place was understaffed as are many these days. We asked for wine recommendations and our server didn't come back for 10 minutes. When he did he appeared with one single bottle which was absolutely fine. Since I'm not familiar with Italian wines I was more than happy to let him drive our decision. Unfortunately the restaurant was out of focaccia but we received baguette and butter while we waited for our waiter to take our order. I'm super patient with restaurants these days but it's worth noting that there was a lot of downtime before our order was placed. I ordered the pork and beans half order and the mushroom pasta. I honestly had higher hopes for the pork it wasn't as fork tender as I expected and it could've used a little bit more flavor. The mushroom pasta was great but I wish I could've ordered a half order of it. Next time I'll absolutely get the tortellini in the tomato cream sauce- my friend ordered it and it was delicious. We did order a second bottle of wine and it was much better than the first so I highly recommend trying a few. Our table had an automatic gratuity which was absolutely fine and made life easy. They did not do separate checks so something to keep in mind for groups. Coming from the north east, I have really high expectations for Italian food and unfortunately this really just didn't hit the mark for me but I'm wondering if I just didn't order the right things. read more

This place could be soooo much nicer if the owner gave it an interior face lift. It should be a "white tablecloth" kinda place. They serve their Parmesan in little plastic containers. If you sit at the bar, they don't even place a placemat in front of you. The utensils and napkins (PAPER!!) come in a little brown paper bag . I recently popped in to an old favorite, Giacomo's Cibo e Vino. I went early so I got a prime patio seat. My server was great and allowed me to enjoy a leisurely dinner with no rush. Started with involtini...eggplant rolled around various cheeses and baked in light tomato sauce. It was rich and creamy with no bitterness at all in the eggplant. Next up were Brussels sprouts roasted with pancetta (enough for four people, but I did the best I could) and tortelli di bietola -- half-moon pasta filled with chard and goat cheese, finished with brown butter sage sauce. That pasta is one of my favorite dishes on earth. I finished with an afogato...gelato with a shot of espresso and hazelnuts. All was right with the world. read more

Such a cute place to have dinner at. My friend recommended that we at dinner here for my birthday. I was down because I never heard of this place nor ate at this place. The inside of the place reminds me of a little house, it was a chill and busy night. There was a small wait time of 10 minutes, but I think we got sat quicker than 10 minutes. There was outside seating but it was raining so we sat in the inside. The menus are in a binder which was an interesting from a menu but it served his purpose. We asked our waiter what bottle of wine would he recommend, and we went with his recommendation. We ordered the ratatouille with the fried egg on top and a shrimp dish for an appetizer. It was amazing it was my first time having ratatouille, And I was surprised that I liked it. We ordered the pasta with mushroom and that was also amazing too. Another place that I've heard about for years but hadn't made it to. I'd been told that this is where Houston's "celebrity chefs" dine and sure enough I saw Chris Shepherd eating. Cut place! Well spaced indoor seating and super cute patio where we sat. Everyone was extremely nice. They were really busy on a Tuesday night but service was still good and attentive. We ended up closing it down and did not feel rushed. We had a great bottle of wine. I wish I remember the name so I could get it again. The menu is enormous even though it says limited. There are like four full pages. We had a few appetizers since they encouraged tapas style dining. We went with a few of their recommendations. The eggplant was good and the spicy shrimp were delicious. I'd get both again, but especially the shrimp. We had the snapper special that came with a beautiful salad. Everything was great. No pics from this visit, unfortunately. Great wine selection. The ambiance is casual. I recommend booking a reservation and arriving with your entire party to be seated. PET FRIENDLY. Like probably the friendliest in town. Upon arrival, Tupac received a bowl of fresh clean water and a plate of treats. Upon my asking, they assured me that the bowl was sanitized after each use to prevent spreading of any illness. This is extremely important for a dog owner such as myself as my little guy once caught kennel cough using a water bowl supplied by the park we were at. Okay on to my actual review of the awesome food and service. I'll start off with if you like the portion sizing of how tapas are, then this is the place for you. We've been here a handful of times, enough to be able to find our "must have every time" items bc we were always able to try out 2-3 additional new items without feeling like we over ordered. This was one of my go-to Pasta places in Houston, not anymore. We visit Giacomo's about 3-4 times a year so by no means regulars. Our last couple of visits , I've noticed they give noticeable preferential treatment to regular customers. Table locations, attentive service, etc. During our last visit, the restaurant was 3/4 empty when we walked in little past 4:30 pm and were told no inside tables were available, all booked and got offered the outdoor seating. Really? They just opened, how can all the tables be taken for the next 90 mins. If they don't know you, forget about it which is really a shame. Eating out is an experience from the moment you walk into a restaurant and unfortunately for Giacomo's, they get a "D-" for front of house staff but still get an "A" for home made pasta dishes. read more

The food was good (not bad, not great) but wayyy over priced - I.e. 2 small slices of over saturated garlic bread for $3.50 whereas it's free at other fancy Italian restaurants. The vibe of the place does not fit the price you pay as the inside is almost like an old broken down homey wooden house. You can buy pasta there that is sold at the grocery store. At the time we went, they were promoting their "once a year" tiramisu and how good it is and how it takes the person so long to make because it's so much work. Let me tell you - it's not worth the hype! We've had better (and worse) tiramisu. I think all the hype about this place is due to the location and clientele in this area. I came with some colleagues for lunch during a conference, and we were in and out within an hour. I got the quaint, family-owned feel when I walked in, because it's fairly small and cozy. Their menu, however, caters to many different palettes and appetites. If you've read any of my reviews before, you know that I like variety but don't eat very much. 3 different entrees peaked my interest, so I asked the waitress for her recommendation. Luckily for me, two of the items I wanted came in lunch or appetizer portion, so I had the Shrimp Diablo (can't remember the exact name) and the Bolognese. The shrimp was VERY tasty, but I couldn't help but feel guilty because it comes with a slice of bread for you to dip in this oil concoction. The bolognese was also good, but oddly enough, the temperature was not as hot as I would have liked. Because we were in a rush, I didn't ask them to warm it up. They have their own dedicated parking but it's right off Kirby and Westheimer so there's not a lot of free spots it seems. If you've been to Paulie's the inside feels very similar. Giacomo's a sort of a crowded outdated little place that's packed to the brim with tables and people. It's loud and closed quartered, and not in a fancy upscale way. This mid-tier Italian restaurant brings you their out-there strange dishes on a platter of thinly veiled contempt. The pappardelle ai funghi e gorgonzola came with a ridiculous helping of gorgonzola overpowering even the mushrooms on the dish. I don't do this often, but asked politely to send the dish back as it was quite overpowering for me, and the waitress told me 'you know gorgonzola just tastes like that.' Then took my plate away without asking me if I wanted anything else instead. After a while she returned to ask if I needed a menu, clearly upset to be dealing with me. Tortellini. This monstrosity is stuffed with chicken AND pork AND mortadella (a kind of italian sausage) AND ricotta and parmigiano. I thought for a moment that the menu had been misprinted and surely they meant for guests to choose between the different fillings. Nope - it's all in there. Intrigued by this combination, I ordered this as my replacement hoping that this could be one of those situations in which you would never think two flavors could mesh well but somehow they do. Unfortunately, as you've probably guessed, chicken and pork and sausage do /not/ taste good together. It was a bit like eating from a dumpster of strange clashing flavors. I've been here twice now! The interior and patio are so cute and the patio is dog friendly! Food is a hit or miss sometimes. We really liked the shrimp diavolo and the Hawk's bread! Definitely our most favorite things on the menu. The menu has lots of choices and it can be hard to decide! Porchetta has good flavor but we're not a big fan of beans. Tortellini is fresh but the Parmesan cream sauce is a little too thick and salty for me and my family's taste. The stuffed chicken with basil and lemon sauce is soooo good. Been a regular at this place for several years and have still really enjoyed them doing takeout during the pandemic. One thing we really like is that we can order a bunch of small plates and share which allows us to try different things (and even when you don't like it - which is rare for us - it is then not a big deal). We had a really nice dinner last Saturday for $40 (we picnic in a park and since we are light drinkers - Sorry Giacomos - we bring our own beverages). We started with the roast beets with toasted hazelnuts & tarragon and the grilled radicchio leaves stuffed with mozzarella. Both were very good. We were worried the raddicchio might be heavy but it was very good. Had a nice smoky flavor too. next was the gamberi al diavolo where the shrimp were perfect and had the perfect spice in the sauce. next was the grilled homemade chicken galantine, which we had before - looks a little odd but is fantastic. Finally we had the tortelli di bietola - we love this pasta dish because it is a nice light sauce and the tortellis with the stuffed cheese is airy and tasty. For like $0.50 you can get some focaccia as well though we also had very good baguette with the shrimp (and we are bread snobs so really appreciate good bread when we find it) read more

Not too spicy, but just enough to keep wanting more of (and to dunk the baguette in). The Gnocchi Alla Romano was probably the most underwhelming of the dishes as it did eat a little on the dry side. I cannot believe it has taken us this long to go to Giacomo's, and it is sadly our loss!!! One of the best Italian dinners we have had out in a long time. Food: The pasta is fresh and perfectly cooked. The capesante alla griglia is one of the best things I have eaten in a long time: a perfectly-cooked, large, sea scallop, served on swiss chard polenta with a mushroom and butter sauce. The tortelli di beitola is a simple, delectable dish. We had a half order, and there were 8 ravioli to split - swiss chard and goat cheese-filled, fresh-pasta semiluna ravioli in a butter sauce. Amazing! We also shared the rigatoni Puccini - a large bowl of rigatoni and meatballs - truly a delicious comfort food dish. A very respectable Caesar Salad, and the crostini with mortadella/ricotta mousse was wonderful. Portions are very generous, and the prices are incredibly reasonable. Good selections on the wine list. Only beer and wine served, so get your cocktails before, if you have to have them. Service: Friendly, knowledgable, fast. All the recommendations made were spot on. Ambience: Very casual, comfortable dining. There is outdoor seating for better weather. A bit noisy inside, but not too, and most likely due to where we were sitting. Things to know: Reservations. Get them (especially on Fridays and Saturdays, as was told to us by everyone in the restaurant). Also know that they state they do not seat incomplete parties. Definitely one of the top Italian places I have been to! This place has an extremely authentic feel from the food to the general ambience. The pastas are made in house and are super fresh and tasty. They have extensive menu options, but I have to say the scallop pasta has been hands-down, my favorite. The sauce is super creamy and pairs perfectly with both the mushrooms, as well as the tender, juicy scallops. The linguine Giacomo is all another great option with shrimp, fresh basil, and tomato sauce. For some of the menu items, there is an option to do half orders so that you can try more dishes.
