Beautiful view from the dining room

Always a great night at Gibsons Italia. I was able to snag a last minute 8:45pm reservation and came in with a girlfriend before a night out. We just had pastas and wine and were very pleasantly surprised how reasonable the check was! One of the restaurants with the BEST ambiance in the city. Amazing views and beautiful interior. Food and drinks are top-notch and service is always great. Thanks for a great meal!

Here's a smoother, more natural Yelp review in your style: We had a reservation but still had to wait about 15 minutes to be seated. While we were waiting, we went up to the bar and got a Rum Sunrise and an Espresso Martini, and both were delicious. We were seated on the third floor, which was very clean and had a nice atmosphere. We had a large table all to ourselves, and the seating was spaced out enough that you couldn't really see or hear the people next to you, which was nice. We ordered the 7 oz filet, a side of mushrooms, the arancini, and the ravioli carbonara. Everything was delicious. The mushroom sauce was especially good, the egg on top of the ravioli was different but worked well, and the filet was cooked and seasoned perfectly. Adding the roasted garlic on top made it even better. The arancini were crispy on the outside, cheesy on the inside, and full of flavor. For dessert, we got the banana gelato. The Oreo on the outside was a little hard, but that was really the only downside. The banana, caramel, and everything else paired together really well. The Chantilly cream was a little more buttery than sweet, but it still complemented the dessert nicely. Our server was very accommodating and made sure we were well taken care of throughout the meal. Overall, it was a great experience with delicious food, great drinks, and excellent service. I'd definitely come back.

My boyfriend and I celebrated our anniversary at Gibsons Italia, and it was the perfect place for a special dinner. From the moment we arrived, everything felt elevated. The restaurant is beautiful, with stunning views of the Chicago River and skyline, making it an ideal spot for a date night or celebration. We started with the Acquerello Arancini, and they were absolutely delicious. The crispy exterior paired perfectly with the creamy, cheesy risotto filling and rich fonduta. We also ordered the Cacio e Pepe, which was one of the best I've had. The pasta was cooked perfectly, and the sauce was rich, creamy, and full of flavor without being too heavy. For my entrée, I ordered the 7 oz Filet Mignon with the mashed potatoes. The steak was cooked exactly as requested, incredibly tender, and seasoned perfectly. The mashed potatoes were smooth, buttery, and the perfect complement to the filet. To drink, I had the Pinkies Up cocktail, which was refreshing, light, and beautifully balanced with strawberry, lemon, St. Germain, and sparkling rosé. We couldn't resist ordering two desserts to share, and they were both incredible. The Spumoni Baked Alaska was a standout with its flourless chocolate cake, pistachio nougatine, chocolate ganache, spumoni gelato, toasted meringue, and Luxardo cherries. It was beautifully presented and had a perfect balance of flavors and textures. We also ordered the Chocolate Cake, which was rich, decadent, and paired perfectly with the vanilla ice cream. The service was exceptional throughout the evening. Our server was attentive, knowledgeable, and made our anniversary feels special without being over the top. Every course arrived at a comfortable pace, giving us plenty of time to enjoy each dish and the atmosphere. Gibsons Italia exceeded our expectations in every way. Between the incredible food, outstanding service, breathtaking views, and elegant atmosphere, it made for an unforgettable anniversary dinner. We will absolutely be back and highly recommend it for date nights, celebrations, or anyone looking for one of the best dining experiences in Chicago.

Was in town celebrating a friend's graduation! Restaurant had a great view and the service was so lovely. The waiter which I'm sorry I forgot his name gave us celebratory carajillos when we finished the meal. Truly so sweet! We had a mix of sides to share and our own individuals dishes. Stand outs were definitely the artichoke (not pictured) and the hen of the woods mushrooms!

Food and services were both top notch. It was amazing how fast the team could clean and reset a table. They were fully seated the entire time we were there. They have multiple floors of things going on. Dining , bar , rooftop. We started with focaccia bread with a Parmesan Fondue. We shared a Caesar salad. I had Salmon in a lemon sauce ( wish they would have listed the peppers that were in the bottom of the dish , I hate peppers ). The salmon was great. Husband had a 7 oz filet. It had wonderful char in it. The whipped potatoes were incredibly smooth. They gave him a piece of I'm guessing flourless chocolate cake for his birthday. Service was excellent.

Came here for an early dinner around 4:30, and it was so busy, so be sure to make a reservation. The service was top-notch, the river views were beautiful, and all of the food was DELICIOUS. The arancini were the absolute star of the meal. This is the first place I've been to where they actually serve the appetizers, and it was a nice experience. The branzino was so filling I actually did not really eat the Brussels sprouts, but they were also delicious. I will absolutely be back. Thank you for a great experience and a delicious meal.

Was visiting from LA for a week and this became my favorite restaurant for the trip. The tomahawk steak was reallllly well cooked, and I felt they nailed the seasoning on both the vodka penne and Brussels sprouts. The service was really great and I loved the views you can get from the restaurant

It was very loud! Our server, Angel, initially did not introduce himself and unfortunately the service did not improve. The wine list was extensive and limited. They only had one Moscato. It was disappointing especially since it 's an Italian restaurant. We ordered ribeye but we received a Chicago Cut. Not sure what type of steak it was as no additional explanation was offered. There was no follow up to see if we enjoyed our food. It was just ok. I would not return or recommend.

My review is based off my recent experience. I do not know if this is normal service but this is what we experienced. I made a reservation for 7 people at 8pm to celebrate a birthday. We were seated pretty quickly in the main dining area. The first thing we noticed was how bumpy the tables were. It felt like the table had a cushion top. Any sudden movement could send your water glass flying. Therefore, we were very careful about where we placed our glasses. However we did experience a spill with our espresso martini because of the uneven table. Our table ordered a variety of food to share as a group. We ordered the garlic focaccia bread and Italia meatball as our appetizer and the mini royal platter. I did mention to them that I had a shellfish allergy but my group would still like to experience their shellfish. I think that was my mistake because our server mentioned that there was a lot of paperwork to be filled out for my shellfish allergy. The first star taken off will be because we waited an hour for the bread and seafood tower to come out. It was 9:05pm according to my photos when we first received the food. Everything was tasty as presented. My group did not give any outstanding remarks but we did finish everything. The second star taken off will be because we waited almost an hour after the appetizers were delivered to the table. For our entrees, we ordered the spicy rigatoni, fusilli, Chicago cut, New York strip, and the chicken parm. For our sides, we ordered the fries, potatoes puree, mushroom and Brussels sprouts. Before the food came out, we mentioned to our server that we were hungry and waiting still waiting for the food. He said he can get the fries out immediately if we would like. So we agreed. We didn't confirm with him and he didn't confirm with us that this would be an additional order. We just thought that it was our original fries order. But our receipt said that we were charged twice for the fries. It was almost 10pm when we got our food so the taste wasn't even a discussion. We ate our meal, paid, and left. They did bring us a birthday treat but it wasn't special since we were disappointed by the service. Maybe our experience was not the normal service but this is through the eyes of the seven of us.

    BANANA GELATO

We visited for our anniversary and the restaurant made the whole evening special. We had a nice table with a view down the river. We ordered items from the Italian portion of the menu and none of them disappointed. The scarola e fagiloli appetizer was amazing and honestly would be an excellent entree in itself. The banana gelato for dessert sounds like a throwaway dessert, but was absolutely delicious. Our waiter Zachary made the whole evening special and was very knowledgeable about the menu, including the wines. Can't wait to visit again.

Another amazing and memorable dinner at Gibsons Italia, this time celebrating our anniversary. Service and wait staff was unparalleled and did everything to ensure our comfort and satisfaction. Very attentive and friendly people who go the extra mile to make this a cut above a normal restaurant experience. The meal was another star. Ribeye cut was a must order. The char and finishing salt made this one of the best steaks in the city, even rivaling the lauded Bavette's. The Brussels sprouts are a must order. Probably best I've ever had. Chicken Parmesan a comfort mainstay and comes with a side of the spicy rigatoni. Finally the risotto was delicious, creamy, and hearty. Huge umami profile with it. We were so stuffed so didn't order dessert there but ordered one to go - the banana gelato. The staff packed it very nicely for transport so it wouldn't melt. This one is also a must order, especially for banana lovers. Soooooo good. Thanks again Gibsons Italia for treating us like royalty and like family! Amazing experience.

Came here for dinner while in town. Table Was ready and sat on the third floor with a good window view. Nice ambiance. Service was prompt. Ordered bread, Ceaser salad and meatballs to start. All very good. Entrees were good as well. Salmon, Brazino and Pasta with Vodka sauce. Banana Gelato was very good as well. Prices as expected.

We came in without a reservation on Thursday night last week with three young kids and all the chaos that comes with that, and Amanda, the manager, was incredible. Even though the restaurant was super packed and clearly very busy, she was so calm, kind, and accommodating. She made us feel genuinely welcome and helped make the whole evening work for us. We're so grateful to her, because what could have been a stressful dinner ended up being a really wonderful experience. The food was delicious across the board - sides, pastas and the steak was especially outstanding. We'll absolutely be back, and Amanda is a big reason why. Thank you, Amanda!

Gibsons Italia Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Gibsons Italia

Does this place do valet parking or is there a parking area?

Valet only. Good luck with street parking

Can i bring my own wine?

Of course not! Why would you want to save money by bringing wine to a place that is one of the best steakhouses in the world?

    Is this place kids friendly?

Yes, but it's a little loud for young kids, the food itself can be kid friendly, but it's a rather busy and loud hot spot. I would say yes for sure in the afternoon before prime dining hours

What time does dinner service begin?

They told me 3pm. So that's when I made the reservation for, but don't suggest that as they sat us in the downstairs area without the view. Instead of upstairs with the good view. Make later if possible.

    Is there a happy hour?

    Sadly no

What is the lunch time dress code?

I do not know if they have any formal rules, but I would say nice casual. Not suit jacket and tie, but nice pants and clean shirt for men. Sadly, it's difficult for me to suggest how a lady should dress.

Do they offer any Gluten-free options?

    Gluten free pasta

What time is lunch and what time is dinner served?

I don't think they close in between Best food ever!

    Is their patio heated?

They have freestanding heaters but it is still totally open air and subject to the weather. Dress in layers!

Does the 34 oz Tomahawk steak actually 34 oz of meat or is the bone included?

Industry standard is the bone + meat = advertised/menu weight for bone in steaks. All advertised weights are also pre-cooked weights. Enjoy your meal!!!

What is considered dressy attire for men?

My husband wore black dress pants and a button-down shirt and seemed to be perfect. It was anywhere from casual (short sleeves and jeans) to some wearing blazers. A button-down collared shirt and slacks are more than enough. :)

    Is this place vegetarian friendly?

I don't know about vegan, but they have a number of vegetarian pasta dishes with oil-based and meat-free red sauces.

    Do they have gluten-free pasta?

Yes they do. You can substitute it into any listed pasta preparation you want.

    Is there boat parking?

    No.

When is the first day opening?

    October 23rd

I first went when it was still a huge, buzzy Chicago spot, and one of my most memorable dinners came after my high school graduation in 2003. I even got a speeding ticket on Lake Shore Drive with my grandmother in the back seat on the way to dinner, which still makes me laugh. Chicago was an especially fun place for Joe's to arrive. Open outcry trading was still a force, and the wealth creation around it was wild: people who had dropped out of high school could become millionaires in their twenties, while math PhDs from the University of Chicago could make fortunes in the same ecosystem. It was a golden era for hustle culture, when commerce idolized Tony Montana in a way that today is more likely to idolize Jamie Dimon or David Solomon. Death Row and Bad Boy ruled the airwaves, while Michael, Shaq, Kobe, and Allen Iverson defined the NBA. Basketball was so dominant in Chicago culture during my coming of age that I still map other things, including restaurants, to NBA teams. Joe's felt like the Miami Heat coming to Chicago in much the same way Smith & Wollensky represented the New York Knicks: each brought a recognizable piece of its hometown culture into another major city. Joe's brought real South Florida sizzle to Chicago, and it landed at exactly the right moment. Going there felt like an occasion. Florida took longer for me to understand in full. My family has roots in the state going back decades, farther north along the Atlantic coast, and I didn't visit Miami until March 2007, when my sister started graduate school in Coral Gables. That trip began my love affair with Miami and helped me understand why the original Joe's was such an institution. A close family friend's father spent time around Miami in the 1960s and 1970s. He knew local fishermen who caught stone crabs, which gave me an appreciation for the older South Florida culture around the food, separate from Joe's own history. Another Joe's memory captures an entirely different moment. Looking through my OpenTable history, my July 31, 2008 reservation at Joe's in Chicago is the earliest reservation I can find at a restaurant that is still open today. I was 23, working at UBS, preparing to move to New York while the firm was already on fire from its mortgage losses, and Lehman would file for bankruptcy just weeks later. I was broke but wildly aspirational, dreaming about dinners at Balthazar, begging my way past the doors at Cain and Tenjune, hoping to drink for free, and trying to meet women comically far out of my league. Through all of those memories, the restaurant itself has been remarkably consistent. The stone crab claws are incredible, the seafood is excellent, and Joe's holds its own among Chicago's serious steakhouses. The room has traditionally felt a little more formal than Miami, with bow ties, polished service, and a darker old-school steakhouse rhythm, while still being genuinely welcoming. Finish with the key lime pie. Years later, my wife and I held our wedding reception at RPM Seafood, another Lettuce restaurant, then ate at the original Joe's during our honeymoon in Miami during COVID days later, which felt like a fitting circle back. In sheer range of venues, repeatability of quality and atmosphere, and consistency of hits, Lettuce is the gold standard in Chicago, with some of that same reach in Vegas and DC. I've been extraordinarily privileged in my exposure to hospitality, and I still repeatedly admire Rich Melman's model, taste, and execution, now carried forward by the next generation of the family. Joe's is a prime example: world-class, durable, unmistakably Chicago, and absolutely somewhere I want to return next time I'm in town with some dough to spend. While Joe's may not be French, this place still earns my highest marks: très bien!

Wow! The first time…read morewe came to the Chicago location of Hugo's Frog Bar, we had the Jumbo Lump Crab Cake and it was amazing - best I'd ever had. That was 12 years ago. Since then, I've had crab cakes all over the U.S. and Hugo's remained my gold standard. Tonight, 12 years later, we returned to Hugo's on Rush Street downtown Chicago. We had a 6 pm reservation on a Monday night. We were given the option to eat in the special Elevator Car, so we chose it. It was a bit tight getting into the bench seating but once in, we were quite comfortable and it was really quaint. I'm glad we chose it. Our server tonight was Stephanie O and she was amazing. So knowledgeable, so pleasant and very accommodating. We told Stephanie we planned to take it a bit slow, starting with cocktails. She took our cocktail orders and we took our time enjoying them, admiring our special Elevator Car and pondering dinner options. Of course, a Crab Cake was definitely happening! Stephanie checked in with us from time to time and when we were ready, we asked her to drop a Crab Cake order. Oh my - it was amazing, just like the last time! Just enough breadcrumbs in it to hold it together. Baked, then seared on both sides on the flat top and served with their house made remoulade. For us, this menu item and a service as great as it was from Stephanie and the rest of the team was enough of a reason to come to Hugo's. After we'd finished sharing the Crab Cake, Stephanie stopped by with the fresh fish options platter to explain each one to us, how it would be prepared and what it would be like. We nearly went for the Snapper but dropped back to our original thought of trying their Shrimp De Jonghe along with a dinner salad. So glad we did as the Shrimp De Jonghe was really tasty and just enough food. The salad and shrimp meal were both kitchen-split for us. Nice touch - thanks team! I have to add that we've had Shrimp De Jonghe somewhere else and we recall it as not being as good as Hugo's. I like how their breadcrumb on the shrimp here was less a breading and more of a dusting. I'd like to mention the rest of the staff we saw in action. The hostesses were quite pleasant, found our reservation and seated us with pleasure. The table team from the water guy, to him and others clearing completed items was excellent. The chef or one of the cooks brought out our split Shrimp De Jonghe. That was a nice touch. And of course our server Stephanie - amazing. Great meal tonight at Hugo's and over the top service from everyone. We will be back - maybe even this week.

Hubs discovered that Hugo's has a Happy Hour on SUNDAYS, from 3pm-6pm! So after I finished my last…read moreworkshop on Sunday afternoon, we met here with about 15 minutes to spare. Available only in the bar area, we were able to find a table for two inside by the windows, in spite of it being very packed. Our server was quick to approach our table, even though hubs had wandered over to the bar to order. After I summoned him back, we ordered a couple of Stellas, a Filet Slider and Baked Goat Cheese; each item was $5 on the HH menu. A few minutes later, Hubs waved over our server again to order 4 oysters, which were BOGO during HH. Upon her suggestion, he chose the smaller East Coast oysters. He told me they were really good and he was happy with his choice. I had two good bites of the filet slider & was delighted at how delicious it was. The piece of meat was quite large, especially for $5! Thick & juicy, it was cooked perfectly medium rare. The slider was plated with lots of crispy string fries that were very tasty. Our other app, the baked goat cheese, was served atop a skillet of tomato sauce with four pieces of toasted bread. This was also a delicious plate. Service was very on-point, and we never felt rushed, even after Happy Hour ended. At some point, the pianist arrived & we enjoyed a rousing selection of yacht rock tunes as we finished our beers. My favorite piece of ambiance was the steampunk-powered ceiling fans, even though they probably did very little to circulate the air. The decor was vintage travel, which I loved! I'll definitely return to Hugo's again, at least for Happy Hour, the next time I'm in Chicago's Gold Coast area.
