Fast, good work and experience to back it up. I walked past this place but had to stop and take a second glance at all the work they had stock piled at their entrance of ther shop. At first look it seemed very unprofessional so I kept walking... Here's your score out of 5 points. Location: 4 points, a small place. That's why so much work was piled at their entrance. But I submitted a picture of their neon sign which is what caught my eye. Parking: 4 points, no street parking but there is a lot just south of there. It charged 7 bucks and the following day that I showed up I talked him down to 4 bucks. Service: 5 points, fast and well done. They listened to my questions and suggestions but also corrected me when I was wrong. THEIR EXPERIENCED SHOWED WHEN THEY CORRECTED MY DECISION. That impressed me very much. I'm happy for those who had a good experience here, but I will never go back. The first time I went I had a shirt taken in. I told him no rush, and asked when it would be ready. He said he would call me when it was ready and took down my number. I never heard anything, so I called a week later and no one answered. Then I got busy and it took me a few more days to call again and he yelled at me on the phone "why haven't you picked up your shirt yet!?" even though I had no missed calls or voice mails from him. I got my shirt back and although it was tailored, I was not impressed with the workmanship. Out of laziness and thinking maybe it was just me, I brought another shirt there. I sew as a hobbyist and have been a stylist, and although I can't prove it I feel that nothing was done to my shirt even though I paid him for it to be taken in. I've had tailors in the past tell me it's not worth my money because there's not much to take in and this guy took my money and in my opinion the shirt looks and fits exactly the same as when I bought it. read more

Dont waste your money or time going to this shop to get anything tailored. He's a CROOK. You must pay for everything in CASH before the work is done. Not when you pick it up when it's completed. Nothing is ever done on schedule. And, the craftsmanship is not the great. Several times I was told to pick on day 3 and day 6 my items were still not completed as said pick up date. I brought my A list client's hi-low three tier skirt to Gilbert to make a pattern and create another skirt. I paid in advance for the pattern and the skirt copy. I was told to come back in two weeks. I went to pick it up week two and it was not done. I went back three days later and the skirt nor pattern was done. I live an hour away. The third time I went to get the skirt n pattern, only the skirt was finished. Gilbert told me that he had to find the pattern that was upstairs in his store and he would call me. As you can guess, he never called. Never. I began working out of LA on a commercial, photo shoots and a crime cable show. Needless to say, I got really busy over the past few months. So, I go to his shop and ask for the pattern that I had prepaid for. Gilbert states that "he threw away all of his patterns and that he no longer is making patterns." Well what the heck does that have to do with me?? I paid for my pattern and I want my pattern. Gilbert then states, "he can do the pattern but I would have to pay again for it." What the hell. Make it make sense to me?? Please someone tell me why should I pay for something I've already paid for and he threw it away?? It's just not adding up to common intelligence. He keeps my money and want me to pay for it again?? I will never go back to that sweat shop again. Moreover, I'm going to sue him for my money. There are many more competent tailors on Los Angeles Street to go to if you need a tailor. Trust I will heed my own words. Find a new tailor. read more

Gilbert is a lifesaver. It was 2:30 and I was scrambling to find a tailor who could fit my off-the-rack Zara suit jacket (taper waist, slim sleeves) and pants (slim) in time for my job interview the next day. Had spoken to two other tailors beforehand and was told they'd need 3-7 days, and was ready to give up. Figured I'd give one last tailor (Gilbert) a shot. I didn't call in advance and walked-in a little after 3pm. The staff (Gilbert wasn't there when I first came in) was super friendly and responsive: immediately pointed me to a changing room, I suited up, then one of the tailors sized me and helped mark out the alterations I had in mind (it was my first time getting a suit fitted); he told me he it'd be $50 and they could have it done by 5:30. They had me sized and gave me a quote in less then 20 minutes; they pulled the job off punctually, beautifully, on very short notice, and at the price I was quoted in just over 2 hours. Met Gilbert when I returned to pick up the suit. Seemed very friendly/personable and clearly appreciated modern slim fit suites (joked that he just wished he still had the body for it). I came here to get a pair of jeans altered. They told me it would be around $20 to have it altered because mine has zippers at the bottom of the jeans, which requires more work. However, they were willing to give us a discount since I went with my friend and we needed three items altered. In the end, they only charged me $15. I was a little skeptical at first because it didn't seem like they took a long time to measure the length and how much they will need to alter. When I went back to pick up my jeans, they had it done perfectly. I would definitely recommend Gilbert's Tailor Shop to anyone who needs their things altered. I cannot vouch for other clothing pieces but my friend said her dresses were altered to perfection as well. One of the managers at Gilbert's Tailor Shop said he'd rather charge us a little more so our clothing can be altered the way we want it as opposed to charging less but getting it done shoddily. BAD experiences! I came in with a skirt to be taken in, I told Gilbert I needed the skirt Monday at 9:30 am for a job interview, he promised it would be ready but to call on Saturday afternoon to be sure it would be ready. I called Saturday and he said all was well. I come at 9:30 am on Monday, as it said on my claim ticket and no one was there till 9:35. Once inside, me and the other employee discover my skirt had NOT BEEN TOUCHED. Gilbert swore to me it would be finished, he knew it was for a job, and he told me on Saturday it was done. HE LIED. The kind employee offered to do it in 20 minuets but I did not have time and did not want it to be sloppy. Previously, I had gotten a skirt taken in and it was done well. HOWEVER, I got two zippers fixed and both zippers are cheap, they get stuck, and I am taking them to a high quality tailor to be fixed, AGAIN. Also, he is pretty expensive, to get my skirt taken in cost $15, he shouldn't charge such high prices when they are not able to properly fix a zipper or have reliable customer service. I will not be returning and i suggest going to a different tailor in the area, there are many. read more

Gilbert is the Valentino of DTLA! It's scary how well he knows the human form and can in most cases make modifications based on sight without using pins. I always buy Bodycon dresses one size up then bring them into Gilbert to have tailored to my shape. More specifically if you don't have a butt or boobs you can express to him your insecurities and he can make the clothing accentuate your plusses while hiding your minuses. I lived a block from Gilbert's tailors on the same block (yes, one of the crazy one's who decided to buy into the New Downtown Action) I moved away, but still come back to his shop. Very friendly guy. I took my nice trench coat (bought at Bloomingdales not in the garment district) to have my sleeves taken in. The trench coat had 4 buttons on each wrist area. Was originally told the price was 20 bucks. He told me he was just going to do a straight forward hemming, and I would loose the buttons. Here's the reason why I gave him 5 stars and raving about his service. I'm Filipino. Gilbert doesn't know I speak fluent spanish. He speaks to his tailors in Spanish and asked them if they can do a good job and maintain the look of the sleeve if they kept the buttons. I asked him how much it would cost and he said $40 bucks. I took him up on it. I wanted to maintain the look of the trench. I like the fact that Gilbert doesn't know I speak Spanish and he was still looking for my best interest. He was honest about what would look best for my jacket sleeve. I travel all over the world for work and speak 3 languages. A number of times I have done business with small neighborhood stores/businesses and several times I over hear or listen to clerks bad-mouth customers not knowing I speak the language. I like that Gilbert didn't use his bilingual skills to screw his customer (me), but rather help. Yes his conversation was not towards me, but I did over hear it. Yes he raised the price, but When I picked the jacket up. It was better than I expected. The button detail was maintained and they added a crease/fold beside the buttons to make it look more tailored and custom than the original design. read more

I had an out of town wedding I found out was black tie only and I needed a tux. I drove all over town to find a tux I could afford and finally found one at 3 day suit broker on Thursday night. I needed to get it altered fast because I was leaving town the following Wednesday. 3 day said it would take about a week and all I needed altered was the pants. I couldn't wait that long so I decided to make a trip to the Garment district on a Friday morning to find a tailor. I reviewed yelp reviews the night before. First I went to Ailbert's because that shop got some good reviews. Albert asked me when I needed the tux and I said , today, he said it would take him two weeks. I asked for recommendations of other tailors and he really didn't give me any, said there is one next door, down the street and all over the area. So really no recommendations. It's not a review of Albert s work but I felt if he wanted to earn my business next time he could tell me who he would recommend. I wont be back to Albert's. I left Albert;s and started walking down the street and Saw Gilbert's sign, I thought I had taken suits to him many years ago and he did a good job so I went into his shop. When I went into his shop I thought all I would need were my pants shortened but he pointed out the jacket could be altered better to fit my body, if I was wearing french cuts I needed the sleeves shortened and the pants needed to be taken in slightly to give me a better fit. OK no problem, he said they would be ready in an hour and a half and took my cell phone number to call me, I wondered around the garment district for a while. I didn't get a call so I went back and it was ready. Gilbert had stepped out of the shop and his tailors were there, I tried on the pants and thought they still may be to long, the tailors were ready to mark up the pants when Gilbert came back he said, let me show you something, sit down so I did and with them being shorted more once I sat down they were too short. Moral of that story- Have Gilbert look at it after you have it done. The tux looks great and fits is fantastic, much better than when I first took it in. While it wasn't the cheapest in the district ( I spent about 50 bucks for all that tailoring) the job is excellent and was done right away. I will always pay for quality over mediocrity. read more

Great work & Service. I have used them twice already to shorten some sleeves on a sports coat and move up the buttons. The prices are very reasonable and the work is exceptional. They are also very fast and sometimes get the work done in just a couple of hours. Exceptional alterations! I have NEVER taken anything to Gilbert that he couldn't alter, and I have NEVER picked up anything that he's altered and had to have it adjusted. It's always right the first time. I'm so comfortable with him and his work that I will pick items up and not even try them on because he never ever fails and I know it's right. This place does a good quick job. My suit was done in about an hour. My girlfriend also got her dress hemmed in about 30 minutes. Their price is reasonable. But what upsets is the fact that I called 30 minutes before I stopped by and asked for the price ahead of time, but when I brought my suit in, the price was increased because brought in a brand name suit I just bought and the price tag was still on the suit. So this was my first time getting a suit tailored, and I think it went really well. Got my pants hemmed for $7, and the guy told me my jacket would look better with a "slim" fit thats popular these days ($15). The only thing I wish I knew was that it would tighten the shoulders, but I guess the looseness before was due to the large amounts of space and "boxy" look, and in the end, you get a suit to look good, so no complaints. I just wish I had given extra for the advice, but hopefully this review helps make up a little for that. There are parking lots a block or two away from this place, and I definitely recommend it for suits. Oh and if I changed faster, I could've been out of there in less than half an hour! read more
