Can't believe this guy stole my bow tie from my suit pocket. Honestly it's not even the value of the bow tie (although it matched the vest for the suit I took in so not easily replaceable), literally was in the pocket of the suit jacket before they did alterations, got done, put the suit back on the coat hanger and closed the protector. Didn't think anything of it, got home and the bow tie was missing. Sat at the shop while alterations were done. This is sad because he didn't only take business from himself but also the suit shop that referred me to Nams. Hope the 10$ bow tie was worth it to you. read more

This is supposed to be a tailor on the spot. We brought some men's pants on and they said to come back in an hour. And hour and a half we come back and they are not done and the tailor is working on someone's order who just came in. We wait another forty five to have them done. The whole thing turns into a 2 1/2 job. Though it is poorly organized and run, the guys working here are good and they are going as fast as they can; they need more people working if they are going to advertise as a "finish while you wait store." I've come here twice. The first time, Nam, himself hemmed two pairs of slacks and shortened the sleeves of my jacket. Not bad for $20. He did a good job and I only had to wait for an hour. I took off to Coles' for lunch just around the corner. The second time wasn't so great. Nam wasn't there and one of the other guys hemmed up some pants. When I got home, the hemm line wasn't even. Nam is my go-to tailor. I've brought countless items here over the past year - bridesmaid dresses, business suits, jeans, casual jackets. The cost is low enough for me to never bat an eye and just hand over the cash. Although he can have my clothes ready in an hour or two, I always tell him I won't be back until the next day. People are always streaming in and out of the shop and I'd hate for them to do a rush job when I can wait a couple of days. I've brought friends here who have lost weight and needed their entire wardrobe refitted and he was able to do it in a day turnaround. He kinda reminds me of the Soup Nazi - you walk in and acknowledge him before you head into one of the 'fitting rooms' to put on what needs to be tailored. He doesn't say anything when you walk out - he just starts pulling at the hems and makes his notes before he dismisses you with his hand. DO NOT FIGHT HIM ON WHAT HE SAYS. He clearly knows how to do his job, so just shut up and let him do his thing. Once you hand over your clothes, that's it. Don't wait for a ticket or receipt because you won't get one. You pay when you return and only after you try on the clothes again and he sees it to his satisfaction. Even if this place is out of the way, I wouldn't go anywhere else. read more

Nam's is one of those many unsuspecting little tailor shops downtown that doesn't look like much (aka it's kinda sketch) but does the job right. It's located in Fashion District so you can pretty conveniently make a bargain purchase for an item that's slightly less-than-perfect a few blocks away then come here to make it fit how you want it. We were kind of surprised that everyone working there is male, including the workers sewing, but whatever. My friend (who got a fashion district dress) + I (who kinda homemade a dress) came here + got a couple items altered here a few months ago. Hers was an ornately beaded dress that needed to be shortened at the hem + also have the halter straps tightened to fit her small frame. Mine needed to be brought in a bit throughout the torso + chest area to give a better fit. He charged us $10 per alteration so it was $10 for me + $20 for my friend. Not bad... especially since they were ready for us the very next day despite the number of other customers he seemed to have come in during our time there. And yes, as Jean L. mentions, many of these other customers are more of the rough urban crowd who were mostly getting trendy suits fitted + baggy sagging dress pants hemmed. They have 4 dressing rooms on the left side to try on your clothes + then you come out to the middle of the shop to stand on a wooden block while Nam looks over what alterations are needed. (Yes, this means that everyone walking down 7th St can look in the window + see you trying on your clothing, haha.) He uses primarily chalk lines + then maybe a pin or 2 to mark the changes. During this time, barely speaks to you + doesn't give you any slips of paper or a receipt for your clothing as you leave the shop. This minimalistic style made me skeptical at first, but it all worked out fine in the end. When we came back, he somehow remembered us + our altered dresses fit just fine. Done simple + done right. I'm not sure to what capacity Nam + his male seamstresses are capable of doing alterations, but I'll probably come back here again if I'm ever in need. =) P.S. Yes, this is fashion district so street parking is hard to find. There's plenty of paying lots in the area... but I'd advise you come early + preferably during the week to avoid having to pay just for a quick 10 mins at Nam's. read more

"I hopped off the plane at LAX with my dreams and my cardigan...." More like I hopped on the Dash with my baggy dress, my dreams, and hopes for a bargain... Sing it fast, and it's close enough. What a pleasant surprise! Hunting for a dress for Del Mar opening race day, all I could find was a dress I loved but was too big (I thought) in the waist, bust and arms. I had all of two days to get it tailored, and was feeling a little frantic. I found Nam's on Yelp, with the majority of reviews mentioning my favorite words: "cheap" and "fast". Nam proved to be both, as well as knowledgeable. I walked in, we exchanged a greeting and I put the dress on in one of the little fitting rooms. When I came out, motioning to the sides where the dress was very loose, he shooed my hands away, gathered up the top of the dress stuck some pins it, and it TRANSFORMED! A dress that looked like a tent now looked fitted. With two pins, I tell you, two pins! He told me to come back tomorrow, same time. He didn't say a price, and from the tone of other reviews, I decided not to ask. I went back the next day, a few hours earlier than he'd said (I'm impatient like that), and I was not disappointed. Fifteen dollars for the tailoring, I tried it on at home and it was perfect. Why is this not a five star review, you may ask? Though my dress was obviously tailored with tender, loving care, when I came to collect it, it was in a heap with other clothing. My dress is maybe not that special to Nam, and I don't mean to say the other clothing is riffraff, but it was momentarily disconcerting to see my apparel tossed haphazardly with the rest. For $15 tailoring of a more than $130 dress, I should not expect preferential treatment , but alas, there it is. I rate on feelings. read more

Sloppy as hell! Went in to get a shirt tapered, jeans original hemmed, and pants tapered. Hemming jeans is $5, original hem $10. I opted to get the original hem because...why not, it was another $5 and didn't feel like telling the guy a regular hem was fine (Nam was not there if that makes a difference). I ended up not altering the other pair of pants because he was insisting on tapering it without measuring how it would fit on me. I should've taken it as a sign to forget the whole thing. The guy with glasses was rude, no care in the world. Got my jeans back after a few hours and I ended up with the second worse case scenario behind it being damaged: my jeans have this interior cuff (due to cutting corners to maximize volume) that changes the behavior of the jean. This is actually worse than a regular effin' hem because of this cuff. If I would've known, I would have gladly taken a regular hem job or nothing at all and still have given him my $10 to stay away from my jeans. How does a tailor make an original hem worse looking than a regular hem?! Ridiculous. Go anywhere else if you care about your jeans. read more

This experience was horrible, my visit was last week to have a pair of pants shorten from top in order to shorten the inseam my ideal. The pants originally had an elastic waist band appx 1 1/2 inches When I return to pick up my pants they were shorten by replacing the waist band with a 4" band. My pant look like professional Boxer's short or jogging pant about the waist, I had to purchase a long top in order to hide the ulgy waist. It was quite obvious that I was just another $ sign absolutely no pride in this alteration. read more

Unreal- I bought a really unique fur coat that had an organza overlay over the whole thing. It was a little too big in the shoulders and the length was a couple inches too long. I took this into Nams and he tailored everything to perfection- not an easy task considering he is cutting thick fake fur then layering filmsy organza on top so that it isn't tight or loose- any tailoring mistake would be really visible. It was PERFECT!! Plus I thought this would easily cost me a hundred dollars and more it was so cheap- it was $40. UNREAL this place is a real gem. Is it decorated nicely? My husband and sons have been coming to Nam's for years for their pants alterations. Not only is the service fast, the prices are very reasonable. This latest visit, my husband brought in 3 pairs of pants. Only $15 for all three! We were told it'd be around 20 minutes. So we wandered around for a while and they were done by the time we returned. Notes: Don't forget to bring your shoes along when getting pants hemmed! Open on Sundays. Would give less than 1 star if I could. I specifically asked for them to take in fabric on a garment from a specific spot. Returned to get the garment to find out they did not take it in from where I asked, they took it from the sides. Because of this, the garment was made too tight on my hips. I had to return for them to undo what they had done and do it the way I originally asked. I was told the garment would be ready same day. I returned at the end of the day and you guessed it, it wasn't ready. My time was wasted and because they don't take names or phone numbers from customers, they couldn't call me to inform me that my garment would not be ready when they said it would. I don't know what people are looking for or want. D you want champagne while you wait. Nam's is fast and very accurate. I bring all my suits here to get cut and they always fit and hang perfectly. Nam is busy so he doesn't have time to watse (your time or his) and I love him for it. He understands when I ask him to cut my suit athletically or what I like to call the Michael Jordan cut. He gets it! Others do not. This man is great and the prices are great for the level of service and accuracy you get. I buy a lot of suits and Nam's is the only place I go. I'm reluctant to post my review for Nam's since it is my best-kept secret as a Westsider. I must admit that I only stumbled onto Nam's b/c I used to work downtown. Even though I don't work downtown anymore, I still trek here for the cheapest and fastest alterations. The proprietor is a solemn-looking and equally silent Korean man who is presumably Nam who presides over the place like the concierge at a high-end restaurant deciding who gets served first. I used to leave my alterations there and walk around the wonderful garment district or visit Santee Alley and then come back to pick up my alterations. Unfortunately, Nam does not strictly follow the first come-first served rule of thumb, giving preferential treatment to some of the rougher-looking customers there. Long story short: you have to stay and wait for your alterations - otherwise he'll handle someone else's alterations ahead of yours if you're not visibly there to remind him that you were there first. Overall, great alterations at an unbeatable price. read more

Overcharged me and the Mexican and Asian man in the store both during drop off and pick up were extremely rude. They would not even get up off their sewing chairs to come greet me and look at what I needed tailored. I don't even know why I trusted them to do the work. It was not done well and needed to be brought back for edits which they asked for more money. The price they quote fluctuates and is not the actual price you pay when you leave. Do not come here. I dropped off two blouses and a dress on Easter. One soft spoken guy was working when I dropped them off. He told me to come back the following Wednesday (3 days). When I came in I received 2 of my 3 items along with someone else's pants. Well. I told the owner, Nam, I'm missing a white blouse and that these pants are not mine. He looks at me confused and then in regards to the missing blouse told me I never dropped them off, insinuating I was lying and saying he remembers that i only dropped two things off. WHEN HE WASN'T EVEN THERE ON EASTER ( f r u s t r a t i o n blooms)! So I point to the soft spoken guy saying he was the one who helped me and HE said he remembered, which gave enough credit for Nam to acknowledge that the blouse is missing. Ok. He then tells me he's going to check with the dry cleaners service. For the next 3 visits over the span of 11 days he said to me "Not yet, come back." The first 2 times I came in, I was told to come back on a certain day. And still no blouse, just "come back." So now I ask Nam, is it possible you gave my blouse to the wrong person, just like you gave someone else's pants to me? He laughed and said, "no, its not here yet." Then I asked for the number and/or address of the dry cleaning service they use and he wouldn't give me it saying he didn't know. I don't understand why a business owner would hold that back from a customer, but ok. I told him how much the shirt cost and he was going to give me a fraction of the price back, and then still charge me for the two items I received back. There was no way I was going to pay after all the inconvenience his sloppy service did. Eventually, after my continuous requests about getting the dry cleaners number SO I could show them what the blouse looked like to make the search easier, he was pushing the money to me without charging me for my other two items. At this point it was a joke. So now that shirt is floating somewhere in someones closet, or maybe still at Nams, but he believes the shirt is not there. He never took my name or number from the very beginning and this could have been prevented if the items had a name to them, so they wouldn't have ended up in another person's hands or M.I.A. and I wouldn't have put energy towards this Yelp review. read more

I only went here because I read good reviews, and I have to say that for the average consumer this place might be great, but for someone who knows about finishing garments the right way, this places is the worst! I went to Nam's to get a dress shirt tailored (basic fish eye darts in the back and shortening the sleeves). I suppose my first warning sign should have been the fact that the little korean man said nothing but "try this on" and "come back in an hour"... he pinned the side seams (which i found odd) and almost took no time at measuring the sleeves. So I left my shirt a bit reluctant but thinking: "hey! it really doesn't take that long to fix a shirt, maybe he's not busy and he's gonna work on it right away" When I came back, I realized what a big mistake I'd make. He just handed me the shirt and said nothing. I was on my way out and when i got home I tried it on. It fits OK, not good. The side seams were just sewn over and not finished properly. The sleeves were the right length but were left with tens of little hanging threads. Thank God that man didn't cut off the extra fabric or else I would've ruined a $400 shirt! Being a proficient sewer myself, I know the damage can be fixed (and no I didn't do it myself because you can't fit a shirt on yourself, you need to stand still and have somebody else pin it for you). It's my fault for trying someone else, I've been going to Eddie's tailor shop on 8th and for some reason i just decided to give someone else a try. First thing tomorrow I will go to Eddie's and hope he can fix the mess that Nam's did. Like I said, if you're not very knowledgeable about how to properly finish garments and won't really notice the difference, or if your garments aren't high quality garments, go to nam's. It's fast and it get's the job done. If you want quality tailoring, walk one more block south. read more

They are fast but they are also sloppy and dishonest! On two separate occasions I had the same experience. I had brought 5 shirts to have it shortened and both times they were not all done. Nam even tried to charge me before I had a chance to check the workmanship. Upon checking each shirt, I realized that 1 to 2 shirts were not even altered at all. What a waste of time for me to wait for their correction AND tried to charge me for services not even rendered! No apology no nothing as if I was an inconvenience. CONS: - There's some odd people in here - I wish there was a more private changing area. When i bring in my Vegas attire to get altered, i have guys staring at me and that is wayy uncomfortable! I've taken everything I own to Nams over the years, the service is prompt, the price very low, averaging approximately half of what you would pay at a local shop, and and quality and service excellent. I want to emphasize that communication is important, make sure you understand what you're looking to get, tell him so, and you will get everything tailored exactly as you want it. To emphasize the promptness of the service: essentially almost any volume of clothing tailored will be done by the next day, regardless of the volume of clothing that the shop presently has. I've brought in 20 articles of clothing, with about 35 different things to tailor on them (ranging from "slimming" down shirts, shortening sleeves and trouser lengths, and even shortening down the length of button-up shirts), and the job was able to be completed in less than 20 hours, done by the next day. What shop can you go to where something like this is even remotely possible? I've brought in clothing that retail over $1,000 individually to Nam's to tailor. As stated before, the quality is excellent. I would rather pay him $20-25 to slim a jacket down, as opposed to paying a ridiculous $60+ for the same job at an "in-house" tailor in Barneys New York. Nams can tailor essentially everything; he can even tailor jackets and coats with shoulders that are too wide for you. I brought in a coat that was approximately an inch too wide on the shoulder, and after about $50, he was able to make it fit perfectly on me. He can do many things that no other tailor would be able to do, at a very discounted price. The only negative thing I can say is that this establishment is not in an particularly affluent community, or anything remotely closely resembling that, it is in a state of disrepair and for the most part the individuals frequently patronizing this location seem to local inhabitants of the surrounding area. read more

I asked him 'how long' and his response was, 'now.' - Precise; Nam and his people are absolutely precise w/ their tailoring - Cheap cheap cheap!!!; $5 for tailoring your jeans! Can't get better than this! Cons: - Parking: expect to spend $1-5 on parking, depending on where you find parking (on meter, or a lot). After all, this place is in DTLA. - May/may not have communication barrier; if you're Korean, you're good b/c Nam is. If you don't speak Korean, Nam speaks English in phrases mostly, but straight to the point. His responses to my requests are usually bare minimum but do not be discouraged by this! If he doesn't get you, he will clarify. But most likely he won't, since he seems to just get what the customer wants when he looks at the clothing. Just let him do his magic, and you're set! I decided to give Nam's tailor a try. I walked in and there was a korean man with a needle and thread up front at the counter. There were three people working in back busily. I went to the counter with my jeans that needed tailoring and a pair I wanted to be copied. I gave the tailor, who I am assuming was Nam instructions. He told me it would cost $15 and to come back in an hour. I came back in an hour and I tried on my jeans but they were not cut to the exact fit so I asked them to fix it. The first response from Nam and the tailor behind him was "No." I said "Yes." It was obviously different from the pair I told them to copy. Nam and the tailor complied and changed my pants. I waited and they were fixed. I walked home only to find that the hem was not sewn all the way. I had to go back to get this fixed. A 1 hour tailor actually took about 2.5 hours. Go to Nam's if you know what you want, have a copy of what you want, and are not afraid to tell people what you want. The tailors here will try to tell you what you want, but you know best. Don't pay until you are satisfied. The quality of the tailoring is not that great. The bottom hem looked sloppy. It is not a straight one sewn line. read more

Horrible! Stay away from this place! My father went in to get his jacket shortened. He dropped it off, then went back to pick it up. When he picked it up, he just paid and left. When he finally went to wear the jacket 10 days later, he took it out of the bag and noticed one cuff was untouched while the other cuff was cut open, as if it was being prepared for hemming, but never actually done. He took it back to tell them that they made is mistake and they immediately got defensive and said that my father did it and they would never do that. As if my dad would go pay someone to hem his clothes, then go home and open up the seams. Not to mention grow back the cuff that they had allegedly already cut off. Terrible service by terrible old country style people. After paying their fee, plus parking three times, it is safe to say I paid much more than if I had just gone to my local dry cleaners who do the same work for $8. read more
