I've always liked guided unicorn. I take all my friends here because of their $3 happy hour food and drinks and because It's a cool spot that's underground with a fun ambiance. The food and drinks are always great. The reason I'm only giving 3 stars is because of service. My friends and i went there 12/27 around 10:15 to grab a bite to eat before we went out. We came downstairs and one of the gals working told us to pick a spot to sit so we did while we waited for the rest of our friends to come. Then a male server comes up to us and rudely says "so i guess we're seating ourselves now?" We told him that the other girl working there told us we could sit where we wanted and under his breath he said "bitch". It's disgusting how disrespectful that was to his coworker. He gave us menus and i asked for the food happy hour menu and he said they weren't doing it, i said "isn't it from 10 until close?" And he replied with yes you have ten minutes. Idk if they closed at 10:30 or if he was just being lazy but their website says 11. He made us feel really bad about ordering food, like it was a chore, so my friends decided not to and i was hesitant (i was so hungry!) when he came back to take orders my friends all opted out and it was my turn to order but i was literally scared to order because i felt like he would have done something to my food because of how mad he was. I ordered food after he said "well if you're gonna do it do it now" he sounded so annoyed with me. When we got our checks, still with his snotty attitude he said "so i assume we're all separate?" (There were 7 of us) when we split into 2 checks he seemed a little happier that he didn't have to do much. I'm sorry but if you hate your job please look into doing something else. They were out of duck 2 people had the unicorn burger which they said was good, burger size reminded them of little big burger. My son had the cast Iron steak and I had the Northwest. I always meet the coolest people here, the bartenders are amazing, and the available liquor variety are some of the best in the city! I've been a fan of Gilded Unicorn since they opened. Up until my last experience, they would be 5 stars. But like some other places, they can have some inconsistencies in service. If my last experience had been my first, I'm not sure I'd be coming back. It was that bad. They need to get their service consistent. The good: - Awesome atmosphere - Great drink selection - Unique menu, always good food The not so good: - Service had been anywhere from fantastic to piss poor. Not sure if they were understaffed or what, but waiting 30 minutes for a drink is not cool. Being ignored or being talked down to, when you finally get some service is also not cool. Our server, who was also the bartender, should not deal with the public. They were out of a particular liquor to make one of the drinks, which I know happens. A decent bartender should be able to make a recommendation for something similar, especially when you work at a place that specializes in cocktails. Not this guy. He was just snotty and said to pick something else. He just seemed very disgusted to be waiting on tables, and it was not full. I wouldn't want to be dying of thirst in the desert and have to rely on this guy for water...... The food we ordered, was fantastic, as it has always been. The appetizers were ok- not great but we were very hungry! We ordered the Sparkle Burger and the Duck and Pancakes. The burger was dry, overcooked, under seasoned. The duck was so salty and rubbery I stopped trying to eat it after 2 bites. The pancakes were drenched in maple syrup and soggy- not what I was expecting based on the price and description. I came here for my birthday yesterday. It was very welcome in and a very cool kind of underground setting. The drinks are reasonably priced and the appetizers were so good. The pretzel with the beer cheese is just outstanding. My husband got the bacon wrapped dates and they were also surprisingly very good. I'm not a sweets person but those were really fantastic, were definitely on the sweet side. A huge part of my fire stars is coming From the ambiance You get here and the service is just outstanding. Our waiter's name was Caleb and he seemed very awkward but very funny and very attentive to anything we needed. I tried my husband's duck stroganoff, The noodles are delicious and the duck is so tender and amazing. I love cooking and I love a good pork chop and my pork chop was one of the best pork chops I have ever had in my life. I can't even begin to tell you how juicy and delicious this pork chop was. I can see myself craving it and the future. The kale that came with it was great. Kales texture can go South very quickly and this was definitely not the case. Now I'm still going to give this 5 stars but the Mac and cheese was something that lacked a lot of luster. It was more of a pasta salad then Mac and cheese. It lacked cheese. I got the pretzel and that was edible except they mix the mustard and cheese dip together and I didn't know that seeing as I hate Smokey horseradish mustard so I didn't get to really eat much and French fries which were undercooked and cold. Then my boyfriend got pigs in a blanket and I tried one but the dough wasn't cooked so they were mushy and I ended up getting sick from them and chicken sliders which were ok, but nothing great. Went on a Sunday night with some friends. Had reservations and after we were seated we were moved to a broken table. When we told the waiter they didn't care or do anything to rectify the situation. Portions were small for the prices. Burgers were dry. Salmon and grits was disappointing. Stroganoff had good flavor, but noodles were clumped and stuck together. I had been curious about the Gilded Unicorn for some time now and was genuinely pleased with the experience we had had there last Thursday. We started with the duck wings and finished with a Fat Elvis. All of the food was so rich and tasty! The ambiance was very nice too, perfect place for a date night or spot to take the parents. I loved the cozy feel of the space and surrealist art sprinkled throughout the space. The price tag is higher than your average Spokane spot, but I have heard their happy hour is amazing and affordable! Went here for happy hour and I was amazed by how beautiful it was inside. The stone and brick walls are decorated with mirrors, paintings and of course, unicorns. I don't know if they rent out the space for parties, but it would make a great venue if they do. We tried a few different things: the maple bacon deviled eggs, crispy duck wings, Mac and cheese and the tatertot casserole. Everything was delicious. I don't even like deviled eggs, but those were the best I've ever had and I would definitely get them again! The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 was because the server (though nice) was incredibly slow. We were there over 90 minutes and it took 10 minutes just for her to take our card to pay the bill. From start to finish, she was unforgivably apathetic, inattentive, lazy and full of unsolicited, 100% bullshit excuses. We were at the restaurant for nearly half an hour before we saw a single drink. The server had poor knowledge of the menu and was apathetic about getting answers (to basic questions) from the chef. We literally never received a single water refill. Everyone's water sat empty for well over 20 minutes before we finally asked the server to bring some water. Server never asked if we wanted another round of drinks. Again, drinks sat empty for quite a while before we got another round. Not a single plate was cleared from our table throughout the entire meal. Literally. The appetizer plates were still on our table when we finished eating our entrees. There were so many plates on the table that we had to start stacking them to make room. The server never cleared a single plate. The thing that sealed our dislike of the Gilded Unicorn was that fact that the restaurant was maybe 1/3 full. It was not even remotely busy for a weekend night. If a restaurant is slammed and the servers are overworked, fine, management sucks and servers can still offer heartfelt apologies. But that was not the case. The restaurant was not at all busy, the server simply had a shitty attitude and non-existent work ethic from start to finish. She never accepted responsibility for a single component of her horrible service. Instead she just kept providing unsolicited, completely bullshit excuses. Half of our group have been servers at some point in our lives and all of us thought she was one of the worst we've ever seen. The service was so bad that, despite the great atmosphere/decor and food that ranged from poor to good, there's no choice but to give The Gilded Unicorn 1 star. Can not think of a single reason to ever go back to the Gilded Unicorn Turd. read more

Sparkle burger had a mushy bun and did not taste good - overly sweet, flavors did not mesh. Salmon cakes were awful; fish sticks from your neighborhood grocery store are better. Deviled eggs were okay... but the Smokey flavor was a little overpowering. Service was terribly slow and not exactly friendly. It was not busy. 3 other tables. We eat out multiple items a week and want to support local restaurants. Please don't use the pandemic or being "short staffed" as an excuse. Plenty of places are KILLING IT right now. SO GLAD I SPENT OVER 300$ ON THIS PLACE LMAO I FEEL LIKE A CLOWN I've been here for two days, stayed at the Montvale Hotel ( where this place is supposed to be the available room service ), and both times I've ordered dinner from them, it took me at least five calls from my room phone, and cell phone to get a hold of them. Today ( the 2nd day ) We called probably 10 times in 10 minutes just trying to get ahold of somebody; finally we decided to order on GrubHub ( even though half the menu wasn't available) and we couldn't order beverages on there. Tried to call one last time to order beverages, and they finally answered after we placed our order. Then proceeded to tell us it would take twice as long to get drinks as it would to get our food. I understand things are hard because of the pandemic, but even if you're slammed busy, somebody should be answering your phones. I've worked in the service industry, and even if it's a bus boy answering the phone, it needs to be someone. That's ridiculous; you should not offer your restaurant as room service for a hotel if you're not going to even ANSWER the guests. Update: finally got the drinks after 30 minutes, there's no labels on them, I have no idea what drink is what. Thanks. Update 2: just realize we spent the whole time trying to watch Mr. deeds writing this review, and waiting for food. We finally got the food; first nights meal was a lot better. Tries to pass off marinara sauce with cheese & pineapple, in baked wonton wrappers, as pizza pockets LMAO I don't blame the door dasher/delivery person. I do not blame the Montvale Hotel.
