Shout out to the peoples at Jen restaurant Chinese located on Grissom Road in San Antonio Texas. This place is extremely awesome. Have not eaten there since I was at least 24 years old. It was extremely awesome and good service was excellent place was very very clean. Service is awesome. People are very friendly. They kept coming by offering you tea every 27 minutes. Great authentic Chinese food, friendly service & a perfect mom & pop (and family) run business. They remember their customers & treat them with much appreciation. Great for dine in or "to go" orders. Chinese decorations on the walls that appear to be from the family's travels from & to China. They also have a party room for large special events such as birthdays, anniversaries, etc. I'm 73 years old and have been coming here since I was in High School in the mid-60's & 70's. Back in the day, I use to frequent Gin's quite a bit. It was my go to on Sundays. I stopped going after I started noticing their poor inspection scores. Since they have improved vastly, I decided to give them another try. I placed my order for pickup. The interior didn't seem to have changed at all. My food wasn't quite ready, so after paying I had to sit for a few minutes. I ordered the Szechuan Beef lunch special with fried rice and an egg roll. The entree had a good flavor but had weird aftertaste. The rice was disappointing as it was cold and didn't have a lot of flavor. The best part of the meal was the egg roll and the hot oil. They have lunch specials every day, even on the weekends that include fried or white rice and eggrolls or crab Rangoon's and tea. I like the transparency and listening skills of the servers. They provide information on the menu and they ask for our preferences if we would like green onions on the soup, if we wanted wontons to crumble into i,t if we needed any spicy sauces, etc.. They have an upstairs and downstairs dining area so if you can't do stairs, you can opt for the other side. On December 29, 2023 Peg and I journeyed from the wilds of Kerrville to The Big City to meet fellow Yelpers Danny and Chris for lunch at Gin's. Chris and her family have been eating there for around 30 years, so Peg and I were eager to give it a try. Chris raved about the pork dumplings and they were the first thing we ordered. This is one of the few Oriental restaurants that does not limit you to a small fixed number of dumplings. The menu lists various numbers per order up to 25; we, being modest eaters, ordered 20!!! These are not the usual frozen variety but made in-house. Neither are they lacking in filling--these are plump little guys. Served with Gin's dipping sauce, they were the perfect appetizer. The flavor was subtle and well-balanced and among the best I've had--and I've had a LOT of dumplings in my life! In fact, I'd be more than happy to make a meal of just them. Dumplings dispatched (or so I thought--more on this later), it was time to order. Lunch specials are served a bit differently here. The usual is soup, egg roll or Rangoon, rice and entree. Here no soup is offered but you have a choice of an egg roll, 2 Rangoons or 2 dumplings--order these and don't be surprised if you find yourself ordering more--, a double scoop of rice, (get the fried), iced tea and entree. It was Kung Pao Shrimp for Chris, Orange Beef for Danny, Peg opted for Chicken with Green Onion and I chose Beef with Green Onion with fried rice and egg roll. Luckily, everyone offered me a taste of their dish. I, being demure by nature, . . . jumped at the chance to taste them! All were excellent but I'll focus on my Beef with Green Onion. The bane of most Chinese restaurants is an attempt to wow their patrons with bold, in-your-face flavors which are an assault on the senses. The saucing and spicing hide the natural flavors of the ingredients. And it seems everything must be literally swimming in sauce. Not at Gin's. My Beef with Green Onion revealed minimum, well-seasoned sauce. The beef was extremely tender without being overcooked; the green onions were neither muted nor bold, with their flavor complimenting the beef as an equal partner in the dish. This is a perfect example of how a deft hand in the kitchen can elevate a simple dish to something a high-end establishment would be proud to serve. The fried rice had actual flavor. Don't scoff--at many restaurants it is woefully tasteless. Finally, my egg roll was plump, not at all greasy, and very flavorful. I usually find myself dunking them in either sweet and sour or duck sauces but these stood on their own. When I had finished, Danny asked, "Does anyone want more dumplings?" Don't have to ask me twice! Even cold, they were excellent! Peg and I seldom venture to this side of San Antonio but from now on, when we're in the mood for Chinese, it's to Gin's we'll head. It's been almost 10 years since I last had Gin's (mind you this was a staple in my family for years. I'm talking weekend lunches every weekend and after I graduated high school, weekly lunches/dinner) and the food was just how I remembered it. The taste was absolutely amazing, rangoons were as delicious as ever, and some of the best I've had. Pan fried dumplings, even to go, still delicious. (There were two different times I ate here that absolutely made me sick and scared to eat here again but no more.) When I went to pick up my food (two weeks in a row) the place was noticeably cleaner than my previous visits, staff was friendlier, and the food was killer. So glad I can enjoy my favorite Chinese food spot again. My only complaint, the Szechuan chicken and kung pao chicken had absolutely no spice, left me longing for the Szechuan I had as a teen. A friend told me about Gin's Chinese restaurant so I gave it a try for lunch. First off this place is pretty hidden. Its tucked away in a trip mall near the corner of Evers Rd. and 410, but trust me you really have to look for it. I hear that Gin's has been around for 20 plus years. The location it self is nothing fancy. Its a bit of an older building. But the great part is the food and service. It appears to be family run. Very nice people that take care of there customers is what I observed. The prices are reasonable and the portions are generous. I had the orange chicken and loved it!!!! More than ever in this time of social distancing, toilet paper hoarding and people living in uncertainty we need each other. Despite the fact that some of us may only have enough for ourselves, our families. A drive through the city tells me that everyone is being impacted by the Coronavirus, particularly small businesses. Gin's, a place close to my heart is also no stranger to controversy. You've probably read some of the damaging articles that the press has put out. It's by the grace of God that this place still survives. It's mainly because I can tell they value their customers. Family owned and run it is the quintessential "Hole in the Wall" restaurant. It's not much on aesthetics nor ambience. Actually this place would benefit heavily from some renovations. But I find sometimes a place with both great food and service can supersede decor. By now I think I have tried almost everything on the menu with the exception of any seafood dishes. My go to items are their orange chicken or the beef and green onion, with accompanying heap of fried rice and rangoons that never disappoint. This chubby boy casts aside my New Year's Resolutions and opts for their dumplings. I've come in here many times for cravings, special occasions and just because the people that run this place are awesome. It feels strange now coming here in these circumstances to a virtual ghosttown. I always harken back to the times I've gone in and the son and daughter know your favorite seat. Everyone here gives friendly and attentive service. That night I went in and I was given an impromptu "Chopsticks for Dummies" lesson by the son. And that unforgettable afternoon after my brother's bachelor party(My bro and a six pack of PBR's to be exact.) I had to have my favorite dish but I was a smidge tipsy. The owner sat next to me in my shair and said, "Are you okay?" Needless to say after I made a fool of myself I was embarassed to go back. Instead when I returned I was received as a valued customer, a friend. I know we all weigh flattening the curve by practicing social distancing and leaving the safety of our homes for necessities. Yes there is a healthcare crisis out there but there is also an economic one. By the time all is said and done all will be said and done. As you're maneuvering through a potential viral moshpit at a grocery store consider at least patronage of your favorite local business. Even if you go once a week, bi-weekly or even a single time a month you might be the difference in a place staying open. At least until this storm passes. ps. I am by far no expert in Chinese cuisine. I just know what I like, I don't know about the different styles. This one was much different than any I have had before. Even the menu items were different. I was hoping for my favorite Hunan beef or Mongolian beef. The didn't have it. They had Szechuan beef. Ok I'm game to give it a try. The wife had pepper steak. Not sure there was any real difference in the two. Hers had bell peppers and onions, mine didn't but they look and tasted exactly the same. I don't know. The egg rolls were different too, the wrap was not fluffy/crispy, it was very smooth and smaller but tasted ok. There weren't many people here, not sure why. The service was OK, but had they been busier they may have been challenged. It seems every restaurant these days is lacking help due to the covid and service is not where it was before sadly. However, after eating, my daughters went to use the restroom & I went to the men's restroom and was immediately appalled at the filth that appears to have been ignored for quite some time. So I've been meaning to try this restaurant for quite awhile but they kept being closed due to unforeseen circumstances but it seems that they are back to schedule, so without further ado let's get to my three points! Service: Absolutely amazing, supper attentive staff, never had to ask for a refill and made sure I was taken care of whether it be an extra fork that my clumsy self dropped or a bottle of sriracha for that kick we all crave. Quality/Taste: Truth be told I was just a tad bit underwhelmed by the flavor of my dish. The fried rice was okay at best, good texture but lacking flavor. The chicken itself was decent (FYI I had the Szechuan Chicken Lunch Special) but I think the addition of too many bamboo shoots made it more acidic than spicy which gave the dish a different flavor profile (though with a bit of sriracha the dish was saved for the better lol). Also had their dumplings which were tasty and worth a try but nothing too noteworthy other than a decent bang for buck. (Before I forget the Rangoon's were also pretty decent, maybe a little more flavor needed but nothing that wasn't palatable) Price: So here's where I'm bringing my 4 star decision from. It's a big plate of food with tea for only 6.99. I've had worse plates with even worse service so I think in light of all of its shortcomings in the taste department this places deserves people's benefit of the doubt. Great food. This is the best Chinese cuisine in all of San Antonio. They offer all the Americanized Chinese dishes and have a full section on the menu for traditional Chinese food. I couldn't speak higher of the food. The staff is friendly and made of if family. They're Run by a father, wife, son and daughter and they do a great job. The prices are low and it's a quaint spot. When I've been there the place seemed clean and the food was fresh and delicious. Any restaurant can have a temporary issue. As long as it's resolved, you let it go. Great place. This has been my favorite Chinese place since I was in High School so for almost 30 years. Always get great food. I would say 4.00-4.5 tonight. Egg rolls are awesome here. My sweet and sour pork and pork fried rice were awesome as always. I get something different almost every time I come here. Only issue this time was with the crab rangoons. The oil tasted really old and burnt and there was too much left over oil on them. Not very pleasing at all. Weird because egg rolls and pork were not like this. Awesome local Chinese restaurant in the San Antonio area. I particularly enjoy the convenience of ordering frozen jiao zi to-go should you want some dumplings portioned out over the course of the next month. We always order 30-50 to take home and boil ourselves. I personally really like the beef noodle soup here. If you speak Mandarin, you are given a beautiful hand-scripted "secret menu" of choices which just seem all the more elegant compared to the English menus (but for the most part the same in terms of choices). I love the "si ji dou" or garlic green beans the most. It tastes quite like the kind my mom makes for us at home. Depending on your own ability to order Chinese, you can go more authentic or more Asian-American. They have fare which pleases any crowd and craving. I suggest the ma-po tofu of course, and it goes well with the two other dishes I've mentioned earlier in this review. Everything comes out seasoned well and ready to go. The restaurant is decorated in a very traditional style and feels pretty homey. If you're looking for something modern and industrial, this is not that sort of establishment. However, if you are looking for a meal to warm your heart, I would suggest Gin's. Service is quick and kind, especially if you come here with your family.
