I wanted to give 5 stars since I've gone to this place a zillion times in the 80s-90s and it never disappointed! Fast forward to today. I ordered the Gin Mon Chow Fun and am sad to report it wasn't Fun, more like Torture! First of all the noodles had a mealy texture and when I bit into some of the veggies they had a chemical flavor. Not to mention it was bland in flavor. When I used to get this in the 80s and 90s it was the opposite of what I'm describing here! Not sure what the issue is, maybe they're cutting corners with the constraints of the Pandemic? Anyway, it was so bad I threw out the remainder of 'Chow Not So Fun!' . My husband called in a pickup order for the two of us tonight (Saturday 12/7) at 3:27 PM. The employee said it would be 20 minutes. We were about 20 minutes away so headed on over. My husband went inside, paid, and was told it wasn't ready yet because we had requested for it to be ready at 4 (we never said that). They said it would be another 15 minutes. After 15 minutes of waiting in the car he went back inside and took a seat at a chair/waiting area near the counter. The employee proceeded to help 4 other people before acknowledging my husband. Once my husband stood up, he was finally acknowledged, handed a bag, and left. We live an hour away, but my husband has been coming here for decades and even had his high school graduation dinner at this establishment which is why we've remained loyal customers despite the distance/restaurants closer to us. When we arrived home at 5:31, we checked the bag to find that we had someone else's order. When my husband attempted to call the restaurant, it did not ring and he was met with the following message: "Your call could not be completed. The number you have dialed has been disconnected." We used my phone to call less than 30 seconds later and it rang and went through. We have no choice but to assume they may have blocked my husband's number. We told them that we were given the wrong order and expressed our disappointment given that we were not in a position to just go back to swap the orders. The employee was immediately on the defense, stating how *she* was not the one who made the mistake, despite us not blaming anyone in particular. She confirmed that our food was indeed sitting at their counter. She was extremely rude, curt, and at no point used the words "I'm sorry". We asked for a refund, which was a much more difficult process than it should've been and when we asked how long before we can expect the refund, we were met with more snippiness. The fact that we placed the order at 3:27 and by 5:31 had not received a call to ask our whereabouts even further affirms our suspicion that they blocked my husband's number. Why would they leave an order to sit for hours and not attempt to contact the customer? I'll definitely be keeping an eye on my bank statement but our days of coming here are sadly over. read more

We love this place, we have been faithful costumers since 2014 or so, food has always been delicious whether we do take out or dine-in. My family's favorites: orange chicken (crispy, sweet, salty, flavorful) mongolian beef (we love the grilled onions, meat is tasty), the sweet walnut shrimp (yum), egg fuyong (soo good) their eggrolls come out hot and crispy. We live about 35min away and we still make a trip to come here since haven't found another place that is as good as Gin Mon. read more

Best Chinese food in the San Mateo area, without a question. It's super clean and welcoming inside and the staff is extremely nice. Most important, the food isn't drenched in oil like many other spots. It's clear they care about what they make and it shows in the quality of the food. I can't say enough about how wonderful this place is, I've been eating here for 23 years now. The hot and sour soup is the only thing I will eat when I'm under the weather and the rest of the menu is incredible. The past year the food became inconsistent. My takeout yesterday will be my last meal from Gin Mon. It was awful. The food was not freshly cooked, leftover maybe from the end of lunch. It was greasy, the ingredients in the sauces did not mix and floated on each other, which was rather repulsive, and the white rice was dry, hard, and slightly discolored. People tend to be more forgiving for Chinese food comparing to other neighbourhood Asian places. Maybe because for the longest time there was only subpar Chinese food in a lot of suburbs in this country? Even American Chinese food can get better than this. I've had better in San Mateo and Redwood City, at a price comparable or lower than this place (there goes the "cheap eats" argument for this place!) They brand themselves as serving "authentic Szechuan, Hunan and Mandarin cuisines", but the menu looks pretty generic to me. The lunch plate sure is huge -- piled with rice, the entree you chose, fried wonton strips and a fried chicken wing. It even comes with soup. However, the food quality...well, let's say, I might as well cook. You can get better sauces out of a jar from Chinese supermarkets. The best thing I had was the wonton strips! My wife and I have eaten at this restaurant multiple times and now I'm quite concerned! First, the food was terrible compared to other times, one of dishes we ordered to go they just filled with chopped onions rather than chicken! There onions were so over loaded that we couldn't even eat it! Here is what everyone should be warned about... after about 4 hours my wife was checking our credit card account and found that the restaurant had changed the amount in the credit card and ran it! Excellent food, we ordered Mongolian beef. Szechuan chicken general Tsao chicken vegetable chow fun and chicken fried rice. The one dominating quality of the food is freshness. Fresh vegetables cooked to perfection, awesome service and attentive staff always made sure we were happy. I read a lot of the reviews and I can attest to the fact that they have not lessened their portions. Grace the owner or manager was extremely polite and knowledgeable. We not only loved the food but felt like our happiness was constantly maintained. I read some reviews and noticed the complaints were generally after they ate all their food and wiped their plates clean. If you want good fresh food go to gin mon. Read the negative reviews and see what I mean, they are extremely rude and inconsiderate to rant about portions after they wiped their plates clean. Gung Hay Fat Choy!! In honor of Chinese New Year and the Year of the Ox, I'll yelp a Chinese restaurant (or two). So, I've been to Gin Mon a few times, and the other night I grabbed dinner here with my beloved mommy since we both wanted Won ton soup on a cold wintery evening. Gin Mon is a small Szechuan and Mandarin cuisine restaurant in the Carlmont Shopping Viillage. It appears to be family owned and run, and love that it's clean and well maintained (unlike some Chinese restaurants). Service is pleasant and efficient, just the way it should be. We got seated right away, and decided to order: - Wor Won Ton Soup - pork dumplings with shrimp, slices of chicken and BBQ pork in a clear chicken broth This was just enough for two servings each, and adequate shrimp, chicken, and pork and even bok choy. The broth wasn't too salty, but still very flavorful, and served piping hot. Yum! - Rolling Lettuce Chicken - minced chicken, oil blanched, stir fried with finely chopped mushrooms, water chesnuts in a light sauce - scooped into lettuce cups This has to be one of the best chicken lettuce cups I've ever had. The chicken, 'shrooms, and chestnuts were indeed finely chopped and perfectly stir fried. It was so delish and tasty! The accompanying plum sauce is the best, and you roll up the lettuce like it's a burrito. Thought we needed extra lettuce cups, but wasn't necessary at all. I'm sure they'd give you a few extra if you'd ask though. This was a tasty, satisfying, and semi-healthy meal. I really had a pleasant dining experience as service was prompt and accurate (which doesn't always happen when I fine dine at Chinese joints). Prices are definitely reasonable, as our bill came out to be $23. Gin Mon is a good restaurant if you're looking for decent Chinese food. They only serve water upon request. *Last but not least, if you're looking for that extra kick in your food (aka MSG), don't come to Gin Mon, as they don't use it! read more
