Being that I love to eat dim sum, this place is one of the top places to go and enjoy them! Everything here is fresh and tasty. My son loves the meatballs and I myself enjoy the chicken feet, spareribs with bits of Chinese taro on the bottom, and the beef look fun. They make a very unique bun with a mushroom design on the bun that is quite delicious, try it for yourself. The char siu bao also has great flavor and is very savory and tasty. Prices can add up since there are so many dim sum items to chose, however, it is totally worth it. Really enjoyed the food here. We came in for dinner, which means that some items (most fried things and no look fun) weren't available, but the rest of the menu was great. The menu as a whole is pretty standard. Xiaolongbao is always a favorite, and theirs is pretty good. The staff are friendly and service is quick. Like all areas of Chinatown, parking is rough, but the location is close enough to walk to from anywhere in downtown, so it's not horrible. read more

Formerly known as Good Fortune. Tried here for the first time yesterday. Came in around 145 after the main lunch crowd and was seated quickly to a nice and clean table. With 30 seconds after being seated the cart came around and the lady started pulling out all these plates offering suggestions. Within 30 seconds 4 items on our table and we ordered one more. Can't remember what the Chinese names were but everything was excellent. Only complaint was the shui Mai was too greasy, even for dim sum. Staff was super friendly. Coming back for sure. read more

I had lunch here on a Thurs, the restaurant was busy so I put my name on a waiting list that wasn't manned by any employee. The restaurant is small, maybe 20 seats total, run by one cashier and two servers. I noticed that none of the employees were checking the waiting list so I asked if I could sit on one of the empty tables. They said yes and then we were sat. Lol so I'm guessing the wait list is just for looks. Once we sat we were ignored, so I asked the cashier if I could order and she sent a server over to take my order. The food came out fast with tea for the table. We ordered chow fun with beef and vegetables, honey walnut shrimp, two orders of har gow, char su bao, siu mai, and shrimp dumpling with chives. All the dishes were good. The har gow had a lot of shrimp in them. And the dishes ran cheap for normal dim sum portions. Our bill came out to $35 for the four of us. I would say this is your normal dim sum restaurant, bad service equals good food. The prices are cheaper without losing in size or taste. I'll be back. It's been tradition for a while now to go to Won Kee for grandma's birthday dinners, but we changed it up this year and came to Ginger & Garlic. According to one of my aunts, the chef from Won Kee (? I could have misheard) became the chef for G&G, so they wanted to try it out. As per usual of these family get togethers, the adults decide on the dishes in advance, and the huge dishes come out one by one to be shared family style. I usually don't know what the heck I'm eating half the time, but all the dishes were pretty good - we had some kind of soup, roasted squab, cold ginger chicken, crab, emein, honey walnut shrimp, steam black bean oysters, fried rice, lobster, anddddd I think that was it. Standouts were the honey walnut shrimp and the oysters. Normally honey walnut shrimp loses that crisp by the time I get to eating it, but this one still had it! Oysters were HUGE and the black bean sauce was dynamite. It looked oily, which is usually my biggest complaint about Chinese food, but wasn't too bad. Only thing I would really skip is the squab, which I usually don't eat anyways and the fried rice, which we all thought was a little bland. Another downside was the wait towards the end - I had a movie to catch, and the dessert took forever to come out. It turned out to be white sesame soup and I really wish weren't in a rush so I could've finished it. It was super duper good and also really, really hot so I ran out with a burnt tongue.. I'd definitely be down to come back, maybe try their dim sum next time! Besides, ginger and garlic happen to be my favorite flavor combo in Chinese cooking haha. How in the world does this place have a 4 star yelp rating?!?!! This is our second time trying this place and the second time ordering take out. The first time we ordered we gave it a good amount of time before heading down to pick it up and when we arrived there were many people standing around at the front waiting to be helped. There was no line system and no pick up area. After about 10 minutes of waiting with no help and many people leaving in frustration behind me, I literally had to stop one of the workers to ask for assistance in picking up the food which was just sitting on the tables along with about 5 more take out orders. When I was finally helped they were very rude with their service. The food was ok Our second experience was worse. There is no system and we gave it about an hour before heading down to pick it up after our first bad experience. So an hour after we put in the order I sat in the car waiting for 60 min while my husband stood around waiting inside for the food. I guess they didn't even attempt to make it before we got there. Then later they told us they lost our order and did not have one of the things we ordered online. They proceeded to yell at my husband for ordering something from their online ordering system and did not give us a refund but instead replaced it with a cheaper dish. What a rip off. Plus my husband said people in the restaurant were waiting for food and water and were not getting service. He was able to observe this for the whole hour we waited for our food. If I could give the take out service negative stars I would. I would give the food 3 stars. Overall the food was ok for dim sum but I've had better dim sum and better service elsewhere. Let's see, the staff at ginger & Garlic speak little English as expected but make u feel more rushed than other places in the surrounding area. The menu items are basically the standard items. I actually came because I was told of this dish where it's sticky rice fried into won ton pi. New dim sum place in Chinatown. Their xiao long bao here is not terrible. Maybe its like comparing it to Justice League. There is no soup inside, and it falls apart quickly, and the ginger that is usually on the side is stuffed in. The stuffing is kinda good. The rest of the regular dim sum is okay. It is not too oily or salty-ish. But you do have to ask for additional mustard/ dishes. They seem to be a little short on staffing. So it might take a while for them to come back around and take another order from you. It also looks like they have one cart. So be sure to get seated near the kitchen so you can get first choice. read more

We must have hit them on an off day. We were looking for a new dim sum place and came with the hubs, 1 yo and my mom for around opening. While there's a municipal lot across the street, it was closed (for that afternoon, not sure why). We were able to score a street meter spot right in front of the restaurant! There were only 2 other occupied tables, so we were seated right away and received tea. However, like another yelper pointed out - we had to ask for water multiple times. A few other groups filtered in while we were there, but only 2 carts came by and we ended up having to ask for a majority of the dishes we wanted. That being said, the dim sum itself was mostly good. The best dishes we tried were their har gow, pork siu mai, turnip cake (order was huge!) and taro puff. The cheung fun noodles tasted good, (ordered shrimp and char siu), but seemed a little bit smaller portion than what I'm used to. The baked char siu bao stuffing seemed a bit skimpy also. The bao itself was fluffy and well baked, which was nice. Lastly, the jian dui was well fried and puffy, but the red bean stuffing was a smallish dollop. Overall, the dim sum was fine and service was polite. Given all of the other glowing reviews, we might try them out again - but I'm not itching to. Walked in to pick up my take out around 2:45 and it wasn't very busy with only two other parties dining in. For a restaurant in Chinatown, I was certainly impressed of how clean it was. If I were dining in, I know I would feel comfortable eating my food there. I ordered the Chaozhou style rice noodles and the beef chow fun as I was obviously in the mood for noodles. I was surprised by the generous portion size that was stuffed into those regular size takeout containers. Both containers were fully packed and the total came out to be ~$18, what a steal! However, all this excitement led up to an anticlimactic first bite taste test. The chow fun was decent as the noodles were cooked to a soft subtle chewiness, however there was no "wok-smoked flavor" to it like good chow funs should have. I also came to find that there was a pool of oil just sitting at the bottom of the container... ummm. The Chaozhou style rice noodles were a little better in comparison as it had a nice kick to it, but the egg tasted a little rubbery. My mom and dad who had come here before said it was much better the last time they ordered these exact same dishes. I don't know if it was a different cook this time or if it was because it was a little later in the day that I ordered it, but it didn't live up to what my parents had a couple days ago. Hopefully they can improve on the food consistency but overall, an affordable place to satisfy your Chinese food cravings at. However parking in Chinatown can be a real headache, with the small parking spaces in the municipal parking garage and the hardly ever empty street parking. We came here on a Saturday to try out some (take out) Dim Sum. The only thing I liked about this place was the items we ordered came out fresh from the kitchen (hence the 2 stars). The taste and wait wasn't worth it. I had to wait about 20mins in a hot restaurant and the food tasted like every other Dim sum place out there. I will stick to my go to places. I love their Dim Sum. I always get the harm (salty) gin dui, their crispy shrimp dumpling w/ sweet mayonnaise, the taro cake, and all the regulars (hash, half moon, etc.). But I drive down from Ewa Beach to get their jook w/ black egg. They put in a generous amount of the black eggs. Their jook is thick, not runny. It has texture and flavor. It is Not Rice Soup (water, rice, and salt)! Yes, I've had a taste of many of their menu items, which were all good, but everyone has their favorites, and mine are their Din Sum and their Jook! We used to eat here several times a month, and the food was always very delicious, prepared with skill and care, and satisfying for both plebeian (fried rice) and adventurous (fried pork intestines with pickled mustard greens) palates. But now, many of the menu items are just common dishes found at most Cantonese restaurants in Hawaii. My favorites that made G&G unique and worth the menu prices and ominous Chinatown location are no longer available. Like live prawns (steamed and served with a fine salt, pepper and lime juice dip), roasted pigeon, and goat casserole. Sadly, I think the pandemic and resumed deterioration of Chinatown are causing terrible effects to this once-enjoyable restaurant. Prices have increased noticeably, but not commensurately with the quality of either the food or the service. I will keep my hope up, and monitor Yelp feedback of G&G. But, at this point, I'd rather remember my wonderful food experiences of the past at G& G, instead of beIng disappointed by eating there today. read more

Working in Chinatown over the years I've come across a handful of Dim Sum / Chinese cuisine spots but I have to say this one is by far my favorite! They're always pretty quick to seat my party and I as well as take our order, though I have noticed a bit of a wait recently as they now service Doordash, Bitesquad, etc so they're definitely more busy than usual. Yum yum dim sum! I've been here a few times before and so far it seems to be pretty consistent! Being located in the heart of China town, parking of course can be a pain. Once you've conquered that, the rest comes easy peezy! They have a picture menu which makes ordering so easy. Just look at the picture and point!!! Minute chicken with cake noodles is one of my faves and Ginger and Garlic does not disappoint!! I also love shrimp dumplings, shrimp balls, shrimp n chives, deep fried taro, fried mochi dumplings....... my list can go on and on. G&G has very reasonable pricing and great tasting dim sum! You know a place is good when its CHAOTIC!! It was the first time having dim sum in Chinatown and I gotta day it was quite the experience. Place was small and packed with people. It felt like we were sardines in a can. It was so tight that while we stood waiting for our name and table more and more people started piling in we got push so close to the diners that I felt bad hovering over them as they ate. When we were finally seated we order the usual shu mai, shrimp and chives dumpling, and of course chicken feet. It was my first time trying chicken feet and boy did I enjoy it!! The workers would come by with their cart of Dimsum, and would show us what they have or ask if we want this. They we're a bit pushy and would just place random dim sum on the table especially if you hesitate. So BEWARE. Luckily, the things we said yes too were REALLY good. (ie taro bun... so soft and fluffy) something we would have never tried if it was basically forced!! Lol. Tip: know what you want, be firm, and say no thanks otherwise you'll be eating and paying more than you expect. We were getting a little stuffed after while. Also, they keep a little tally sheet when you sit to keep track of what you order. It's feels a bit unorganized but workers seem to have it down. Overall, the Dimsum was great! The hustle and bustle of the place, gave it a bit of an appeal. The place had some truly wonderful foods!! This was our first stop for foods after landing in Honolulu. We looked up dim sum places and found ourselves here. Our server while friendly was a tad brusque. It's not a touristy or fancy place at all. We've found that he tourist spots are often not the best. The place is as less than pristine, had one other table of locals, sticky spots on the glass...it had to be good. The baked charsiu baos were quite possibly the best we've had. The filling was a tad sparse, but so very tasty. Almost a hint of sesame oil as you bite into the soft, tender dough. They were exactly what we needed. Sesame balls were HUGE. Four + times the size of a normal sesame ball. They offer red bean and a coconut sesame ball. Coconut? YES! We took an order to go and it didn't make it out of the car. They were a bit greasy, but if left on some paper towels would be perfect. We got the dry beef chow fun...very yum! The wok was HOT because the dish had that perfect taste of near char! The scallions were cooked but very crisp. Beef was tender and flavorful. Siu Mai was so very tasty - filling had good flavor and texture. Steamed to perfection, they were a welcome addition to the meal. Sodas served in the can...chilled but not cold. Sort of typical on islands, so not a let down. Worth a visit for sure. read more

Our favorite dish to go with the dimsum is the beef chow fun (dry, not with gravy) because they put lots of chives, beansprouts & tender beef. Save room for the fried mochi balls w/sweet red bean or coconut & egg custard tarts for dessert. They serve good Cantonese food for dinner, portions are larger than a lot of other Chinese restaurants. We like the eggplant & pork, minute chicken w/skinny, crispy pan fried noodles, green beans w/minced pork, & sweet sour pork. Waiters & waitresses are friendly and courteous. Easy, super clean, wide stalls, well-lit public parking in the underground lot that you enter from Beretania, turn into the 1st driveway immediately after Nuuanu St. (There is a small park with a basketball court on top of the parking lot.)
