This is our favorite place for dimsum lunch. You can even get dimsum for dinner but not all varieties will be available. Our favorite dish to go with the dimsum is the beef chow fun (dry, not with gravy) because they put lots of chives, beansprouts & tender beef. Our favorite dimsums are chive w/shrimp, siu mai, chicken feet (big & tender), spinach w/scallop, & beancurd roll w/pork & bamboo shoots. Save room for the fried mochi balls w/sweet red bean or coconut & egg custard tarts for dessert. They serve good Cantonese food for dinner, portions are larger than a lot of other Chinese restaurants. We like the eggplant & pork, minute chicken w/skinny, crispy pan fried noodles, green beans w/minced pork, & sweet sour pork. Waiters & waitresses are friendly and courteous. Easy, super clean, wide stalls, well-lit public parking in the underground lot that you enter from Beretania, turn into the 1st driveway immediately after Nuuanu St. (There is a small park with a basketball court on top of the parking lot.) Sunday mornings are always something to look forward to when I know I get to go dim sum! Ginger and Garlic is currently my favorite dim sum place on the island. Why you ask? Price, portion, quality. It's relatively inexpensive for top notch quality. They don't skimp on ingredients either, which means that hargow is gonna be stuffed to the max with shrimp. Its really a top contender for best dim sum on the island. Must get items: mochi rice chicken, baked custard bun, taro puffs. They do these extremely well here. Like EXTREMELY well. The restaurant is tinier so there's usually a bit of a wait if you come during a busy time. Sometimes they'll sit you at a community table as well. Worth the wait though! read more

Don't know if the chef left but the quality has dropped off a lot and the food I order doesn't have a lot of flavor. I used to always order Siu Mai and now the food just doesn't taste the same. Went here as I've heard of this place a few times and wanted to try it. Luckily, being a Sunday morning we were able to find a pot - my friend was able to befriend a couple who let us sit with them in their 4 person table. Yay!!! That helped so much - thank you to my friend and this couple for being so accommodating :) They came and we took some dim sum from the carts. Same old same ol - nothing out of the ordinary which was fine. They didn't speak English so we tried to navigate and it was ok. One thing about me is that I am always sooooo thirsty. So, I needed water. It took several tries and finally I went up to the front and the lady was gracious and said she would take care of it and she did! That was nice but by the time I was sooo thirsty drank it quickly and no refill. Awwwww the details. The place is rather small, and it was pretty packed. It's location is on a corner and parking is best at a municipal parking since cheaper and saves time from going around and around Chinatown. Among other things we ordered the Choi sum with garlic. Given that it's produce I can understand if need I g a little worm in there, but we found at least three and stopped looking after that. Finally tried this place after everyone raved about it. Frankly I was a bit disappointed. The chicken feet and har gau was very good but the Xiao long bao was terrible! The skin was soggy and thick - I've never had dim sum wrapping get stuck to my front teeth before. And there was no broth in it! Just a dried lump of meat. We had to rescue it with the red vinegar. The search for a good XLB is still on because we certainly didn't find it here. read more

Been here a few times for dinner. Lots of Chinese like to have dinner here. Food tasted ok, but one thing that really not happy about was the guy with the long hair that work there. Not sure was he the owner. A friend treated us for dinner there and we ordered lots of food. They charged the wrong item, that should be $20 more. After we paid and gave $40 tips. The lady came and showed us the receipt said we need to pay $20 more. We're all confused and she's trying to explain, end up calling the husband to explain. My friend gave them $20 more. As customer service, this shouldn't be happened. They charged the wrong item it's not the customer's fault. You'll need to look for street parking. Good luck for that. read more

I went there last time for take out and found mysterious plastic pieces in both mochi and shrimp dumpings. I was their old customer ; although I thought that incident was unacceptable, still wanted to give it another try. I went there today again for take out. The dim sum was good, but if you are in need of any explanation as to what's on the dim sum cart in the little bamboo baskets or about anything on the menu you might be disappointed as I was. The best dim sum search begins again. As most of the places in Chinatown go, when a party and I walk into Ginger & Garlic, we're the only non-Chinese people there, so it's a sure sign that we're in a legit place. The place is kept clean, but workers were few so wait times were rather long for dim sum restaurants. We ordered Siu mai, har gao (shrimp dumplings), Lo Mai gai (sticky rice in lotus leaf), gao choi gao (shrimp and chive dumplings), xiao long bao (soup dumplings), and chicken feet. The dim sum was nothing special to me, except for the har gao and gao Choi gao. These two dishes were light and steamed to consistency. The xiao long bao was served without soup spoons, so the soup would break when we picked them up with chopsticks :( also, the selection is small in comparison to other spots. Not my favorite dim sum spot, but I would be back. TIP: The best parking is the Chinatown municipal parking on the left side, right after New Life Church on S Beretania. read more

Delicious! We had shrimp dumplings, soup dumplings and shrimp look fun. Some flavors were a little different than regular spots and to me, that's a good thing. The pork shu mai had a gentle flavor. The look fun sauce was a bit sweet, the texture so lovely. The egg custard tarts were so good! Two servers and a cashier handled the 5 or 6 tables easily. I'm just going to end it here because there's not much to say hahaha but please be aware of what you're eating. I'm not lying, I found THREE pieces of hair in our food. I also ordered a few things off the menu as we also wanted some look funn and Chinese broccoli. It was clean inside. The windows let in plenty of light. Place is small and they still following CoVID by placing patrons 6ft space apart but there was no checking temp prior sitting us down . Despite they don't seems too busy inside the restaurant since most of their orders are for to go so the workers are very busy. We came on Tuesday at 11:00 AM fairly early but still have to wait at least 20-30 min for a table. As you enter you have to put your name on waiting list. No one acknowledges or make eyes contact letting you know they saw you but lots of Chinese languages exchanged among the workers which consist of only three people. One is working the front counter by taking orders giving the patrons their bills while one is running around filling the to go orders and the other one is tending to dine in customers . Food was so so & seeing how busy they are all , we put in our orders all at once instead of pacing them out. There was practically no service what so ever since we ran out of tea and the lady took the empty tea pot back but never came back with a refill teapot. Would I go back to this place again? Probably not if I have my way since there is so many other dim sum places but I guess price is reasonable and they don't automatic added tips on top of their bill like some of the Chinese's restaurants. Very very good Chinese food if I say so myself!!! I've been to Ginger & Garlic several times over the past month because my mom LOVES it here. The chef came from one of the bigger restaurants. We've been here for dim sum and dinner. I prefer the dinner ala carte stuff more than dim sum. One of my favorite dishes was the sliced lamb with leeks. So delish, I highly recommend trying this dish that most aren't familiar with. The lamb is not gamey tasting at all. If you're feeling spendy, I also recommend the "golden crab". It was Dungeness crab fried and sauteed with salted duck eggs yolks. Savory perfection but very expensive as our crab was $64 for a good size. Portion sizes for their dishes are generous! Dim sum is pretty comparable to everywhere else. I think the food is a notch better than most places. The spare ribs were not overly fatty and the dumplings were steamed fresh. I enjoy dining here a lot. It is very popular with the locals but Ginger & Garlic stays true to their roots without being overly Westernized like Little Village. PS: BYOB! read more

Posit, the best Chinese restaurants are those where the vast majority of the customers are of Chinese heritage. Not being racist, just saying what we all know when we seek out the authentic. "I see white people". A dumbed down menu with no spelling errors loaded with "safe" options greats you. Atypical of what you expect from a Chinatown restaurant. Good but not great. The rundown (best to worst): --Mochi rice in lotus leaf - Salted duck egg inside make this one of the best. The rice, highly glutinous, well seasoned, and not overly moist. Bits of pork add further seasoning. --Jook (pork and preserved egg) - Very good. Starchy, with melting, broken rice grains, good kick of ginger, tender pork with the 1,000 year egg adding great depth. --Spare ribs with black bean sauce - tender wand well cooked. The flavor is not pronounced. Hint of spice. ==Beef Tripe - Tender and flavorful. A hit of chili sauce brings it to life. --Chicken feet - Well steamed and seasoned. Slightly sweet and spicy. Tiny serving (only three feet). --Har gao - Fresh, decently well seasoned with a hint of sesame oil inside. Thicker than normal wrap. --Shumai - Well seasoned pork, shitake mushroom and chunks of shrimp. Juicy but heavy use of MSG makes the flavor sweet. --Dan tat - Just OK. Crust is not as flakey and custard not as thick as others. --Baked egg custard bun - Overcooked crust, not much filling. --Turnip cake - Very oily and not very crisp. Benefits greatly from chili sauce. --Taro puffs - Very oily and slightly overcooked on the outside (darker and a hint of bitterness). --Spinach Dumpling with scallop - sandy grit from poorly washed spinach. Unplesant. --XLB - Where's the soup? Chewy wrap, well flavored pork filling but almost no soup. Note: The restaurant offers a full menu aside from dim sum. None sampled. I was a little hesitant about trying this place due previous experience dining in China town, however we were in the mood for dim sum and decided to try it out based on other yelp reviews. When we arrived it looked like there were only large tables available and we would have to wait, but the lady offered us a seat on a large table next to another couple and we were ok with it because the tables were set up to be seated like community tables. They operate the traditional dim sum on a cart system, but the food was surprisingly fresh. I was able to see that they constantly made dimsum in small batches so that the carts always had fresh food on them. Came for a weekend lunch with a group of about 10. The restaurant wasn't crowded and we were seated immediately. The space is very bight with lots of natural light. Our party ordered mainly dim sum items. Some of which were available in the cart and others which we had to wait for from the kitchen. The XLB here isn't very good. Hardly any soup at all and it wasn't very hot when it was served. Actually all the dim sum from the cart was lukewarm rather than piping hot. The orders from the kitchen (shrimp look fun & Pan fried seafood bean curd rolls) on the other hand were definitely steamed/cooked fresh and I highly recommend both items. I also enjoyed the Chinese broccoli with garlic. The service was pretty decent and it's BOYB. With HASR just down the street this was a real bonus! Because we had a large party the check was surprisingly low per person. Although this new restaurant has a couple of bright spots I'm not sure I'd rush to come back. read more

Thanks to the Mayor of Chinatown, I found out that Good Fortune became Ginger & Garlic. I'm not sure of the reason for the name change but I just had dimsum here (12/03/17) and the food tasted the same. If it is under new ownership, they kept the recipes for the food. Same good taste with a brand new name. Nothing really changed in the restaurant in regards to cleanliness, tables, decor and service. Payments are also the same where they accept both cash and major credit cards. This restaurant is now one of our go to restaurants for dimsum. Mink loves their char siu bao because she said it tastes similar to char siu bao in Thailand lol. Overall, legit Chinese restaurant with good food and without the long waits that most other Chinese restaurants in Chinatown has. One of our top two go to dimsum restaurants in Chinatown. read more

Went in for dinner tonight because we were lazy to cook. Overall the food is okay, but service and sanitation is horrible! The servers rushed us to order food right when we sat down. Didn't ask for drinks or anything. The food came like 30-40 minutes later. Thats not the worst part. A table came in later and we ordered the same dish, however they got the food first before us. This triggered my parents. Sanitation problems: two servers were wearing gloves. After they touched the cash, they were serving water and touched the cup rims with the same gloves. They then went on with cleaning table with a dirty cloth. Still no switch in gloves. Then went on to serve dishes :/ Towards the end of the meal they just dumped the sweet soup (dessert) on our table. I'm assuming they wanted us to leave because technically we were still eating but we slowed down. Anyways it was a bad experience. I know people might say that's how chinese restaurants are but I know how a Chinese restaurant is.
