I was quite disappointed that - especially in the coastal area where one would expect fresh fish - a dish listed as "Pad Prik King Halibut -- Crispy Halibut topped with Kaffir lime leaves, green bean, bell peppers and Thai chili paste." served a crispy halibut "patty" rather than "real" fish pieces. I'm a tourist and was biking around Bainbridge Island and decided to stop here for lunch. It was pretty empty, service was nice and the ambiance really did take me back to Thailand. The Thai playlist was really good. The decor was really cute. I got the khao soi and shrimp tempura. The presentation for both were very nice. Portion sizes were decent, and it tasted really good. It is okay affordable compared to where I'm from, but it seems average for Seattle. read more

Came here with friends and right up front - if you're visiting Bainbridge Island and want food without a huge wait (if it's remotely nice out) come here. Venturing off the main strip of the island where all the restaurants had at least a half hour to 45-minute wait, our neighborhood host recommended we check out Sawan. This turned out to be a great choice as this place had plenty of seating and walked right in and we're seated for our party of 4 no problem. Started off with some shrimp spring rolls. These were good and fresh tasting, but there seemed to be some size inconsistency with the shrimp. Not a terrible thing, but just something I noticed. The peanut sauce was great. I had the Yellow curry, with chicken. A go to favorite of mine. The chicken was a bit bland tasting even with it being submerged in the curry. The curry itself however was excellent. Could taste the coconut and Spice. It was the perfect temperature. It was chock full of carrots and other veggies which were good. Service was alright. She was nice and attentive but forgot a friend's extra rice she requested. It was fine as she wasn't charged, and the server was apologetic. Overall, though Sawan was good and would surely recommend for a Thai fan visiting the area. read more

Came here to escape some of the crowds on the main drag of Bainbridge. This was a delicious choice! Since I love Thai food I was excited to try it . First off the menu is huge! They have lots of noodle dishes, veggies, and curries to choose from. I went with the peanut noodles and veggies with your choice of protein. I chose tofu to keep it plant based. This was a very tasty dish. The noodles are extra wide rice noodles and taste very fresh. The service was very friendly and it was super quiet on a Saturday afternoon! This is the best Thai food that we've found on Bainbridge by far. The location is unassuming, tucked in a little complex. We've only done takeout, but have been so impressed with the food. The fresh rolls are so fresh and come with an amazing peanut sauce. We've loved their phad Thai and phad kee mao, as well as their curries. The packaging for takeout food is also very nice! We love their Pad Thai! Great food, always hot when we get take out! The prices are good too, especially because the quality is so high.

I rarely need to come back to increase stars, but we ate here the other night and were genuinely impressed with the layers of flavor in both our dishes. My son wanted all the chicken because it was really moist and cooked perfectly. Same for their prawns and shrimp. I'm not really sure how they do it, but if they can maintain this quality and consistency we will be happy for a very long time. The young man seating folks and following up was great in his presentation and service. The only item that was too salty was the filling for the lettuce wrap appetizer; however, we ate it all because the flavor was there. Take out has been consistently good as well. ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!!!!!!!! I am half-Thai and was lucky enough to grow up with a Thai mom and aunt who are amazing cooks and made the most delicious Thai food that is rare to be topped...Ginn D / Sawan Thai just nudged them over on the podium! To start, my husband and I ordered the coconut shrimp and the fried tofu for apps...the coconut shrimp came with a sweet and sour sauce and the fried tofu comes with a special sweet and sour peanut sauce...SO. DAMN. GOOD!!!!! Both the fried coconut shrimp and fried tofu were perfectly done...light, airy and crispy! And the SAUCES are where it is AT!!!!!!!!!!!! The peanut sauce and the sweet and sour sauce with peanuts were so delicious and really set off the flavors of the apps. (We saved the sauces they were so good). For mains, my husband got the Ginger Halibut and I got the Red Curry with chicken. AMAZING!!!!!!! So flavorful and perfectly balanced with layers of complexity, but in an easy-to-taste way. Not sure how to explain it. Thai food can seem simple...but to create the balanced layers of deep flavor that every dish should have...that's rare to find. I live in Los Angeles...the largest Thai population outside of Thailand...and there are only a handful of legit Thai restaurants that can do this. So to find this level on Bainbridge Island is TRULY AWESOME! Dessert was Mango Sticky Rice...perfect way to end a true delight of a meal and experience. The service is wonderful. Greeted with smiles and never felt like we had to wait too long for anything. We were checked on throughout the meal so we felt fully taken care of and attended to. We finally decided to try the most recent iteration of a Thai restaurant in the former Sawan location ... Ginn D. We were pleasantly surprised at how much all four of us enjoyed our shared meal. The preparations were colorful, nicely and boldly spiced, and in sufficient quantity for sharing among us. A bit of chili oil (in my case) added the finishing touch I enjoy. Visited Ginn D on a Sunday afternoon and it was completely empty! Our food came quickly: the 2 star Yakisoba was spicier than a typical 2 star; the chicken was pleasantly juicy. Bathrooms were clean and I enjoyed the instrumental music playing softly in the background (hot take: restaurants should play instrumental music instead of obnoxious pop radio hits.) My only qualm with this place is that there's a couple distracting televisions that play sports and other content. I look forward to returning to try their actual Thai food! read more

My favorite of the three long-standing Thai restaurants on the island. Not exactly gourmet food, by and large a little on the sweet, simple, and oily side, but satisfying. Definitely my favorite noodle dishes (Pad Thai & Pad See Ew) on the island. Good appetizers, although pricy. One of the nicer places on the island, interior-wise, to have a sit-down dinner, although other places downtown, such as Bainbridge Thai will give you a view of the harbor, so it's a bit of a trade-off. It's also a little out of the way if you're walking off the ferry from Seattle. Takeout portions seem to have gotten a little smaller in recent years, esp. compared to Sawadty's - their portion size was originally pretty much the same as Bainbridge Thai's but seems a little smaller now. All in all, not a lot else to say, it's pretty nice, not necessarily worth a trip all on its own but if you're in the neighborhood it's hard to go wrong. read more

Overall a very good experience. My family and I will be back. We've added this place to our regular rotation. Now the deets: FOOD: Our appetizer (fresh shrimp rolls) were meh. They obviously had been prepared well ahead of time and the wrapper had gotten hard. When the waitress commented that I had to remove them, I explained the situation, but nothing was done to fix it (such as offer a replacement, or take off the bill). Rolls were mostly lettuce, with very little shrimp. If this were what I'd base this review entirely on, they'd get a 2.5. I'd recommend you don't order that. HOWEVER, the mains were nothing short of SPECTACULAR. My partner had pad see you, and I had crab fried rice. Everything was perfect. Large lumps of crab, moist and delicious (not chewy and overcooked as it can be...), a lot of fluffy eggs, rice and cubed veggies delicious and fresh tasting. My partner and I fought over the leftovers. Pad see you noodles had a pleasant bite, and were not overcooked or mushy. Sauce was very tasty and intense. Veggies (bok choi, broccoli) were plentiful, fresh and cut big. We would gladly order any of these mains again and again. However, we saw a lot more to try on the menu...! Of course, because you are on Bainbridge, prices are a little higher than you'd expect, but at the least this place delivers, quantity and quality-wise. Expect to pay around $12 for simple appetizers, and $18-25 for a main. RESTAURANT: Restaurant is under new ownership we're told. It was our first time, so we don't know how it was before. Location is a bit odd, as this restaurant has no visible street access. Its doors face the parking lot and the dumpsters, in a group of condos. A bit hard to find. Most visitors to Bainbridge Island never leave the town of Bainbridge. This is too bad, because Sawan Thai Kitchen in the nearby village of Lynwood Center is well worth the visit. THE ROSES: Pleasant little restaurant in a cute (albeit rather 'twee') boutique community. Pleasant (and dare I say it - very attractive) staff. The food is better than most Thai restaurants I've been to. The flavors are outstanding and the ingredients are high quality. Among the 'must try' dishes, I would recommend the Garlic Duck, the Crazy Seafood, and the Soft-Shell Crab. THE THORNS: No black rice pudding on the dessert menu. How can a great Thai restaurant like this one not have that on offer? I also have an issue with the closing time protocol. We came in a half-hour before the posted closing time and were told we could only order takeout because the kitchen was going home soon. I really think that the posted closing time should be the last time a restaurant will seat dine-in customers. If you don't want to seat someone 30 minutes before closing, move up your closing time. THE VERDICT: Closing time issue aside, this restaurant is a real gem. I highly recommend it! read more

Such a shame someone living in lovely Gig Harbor has to go to Bainbridge Island to get rock star Thai food but, after the hard hunt for something delicious on a Sunday night, we discovered Sawan Thai - an hour from home - and ooh lala! Nice job B-Islanders! Test #1 is always fresh rolls & they do them crispy, neat and tidy, contents fresh, not bagged-grated cardboard-tasting carrots. Pad Thai was perfect. And the eggplant texture - ever Test #2 - with the beef was delectable, so good will match next time to Tofu and skip the cow. 100% tasty and the folks there (we did take out, and the food was still wonderful a few hours later) were warm and friendly. It's 6:37 AM & I woke up early this Saturday morning dreaming about eating my leftovers from last night. Had chicken with veggies (asked for xtra veggies) & received a big portion of beautiful lightly crunchy broccoli, snow peas, carrots & chicken in a light & delicious sauce. And garlic! Also enjoyed Phad Se Ew chicken, beef fried rice, cashew chicken, all delicious & generous portions. We occasionally dine-in here, yet usually do Take Out. The friendly staff completes our orders very fast & our orders are accurate 99.99% of the time. This garlic is messing with the taste of my morning coffee today, but that's a small price to pay. read more

This was our regular weekly dine in date night. During the pandemic we started to order take out and pick it up ourselves. We were disappointed to see them closed so long in February 2022, and so happy when they returned in March with a refreshed menu. Don't waist your time, money or pleasant dining experience. The restaurant was sold. The meals are prepared ahead of time with inferior ingredients and little or no culinary skill. Everything was over cooked, dried out and tasteless. Imagine tasteless Thai! We had an early Saturday dinner around 4 pm. The atmosphere of Sawan is lovely, cheerful and clean. We ordered Crab Rangoon as an appetizer. The presentation was very nice, it even included an orchid flower. Although tasty, the wontons were over-cooked and hard. My daughter ordered the Phad Thai which was extremely sweet. My shrimp wonton soup was hot but bland. It was filled with spinach leaves, 4 shrimp and a few undercooked wontons. Had the broth been better, it may have saved the dish. The garlic prawn dish was slightly bitter and extremely garlicky but not in a good way. I can't see returning in the future. read more

This is a review solely of the food we ate. We're on a day trip from Seattle, visiting from the Bay Area. After an all day driving around Bainbridge Island going from one tourist spot to the next, we worked out an appetite. Came across this spot from the reviews here on Yelp and it was the closest to where we were. My wife and I ordered the shrimp tempura for appetizer. This is a 3 out of 5 stars. The shrimp was nicely cooked, not mushy. The tempura batter though was not the classic white flaky crispy crust. It came with 2 different dipping sauces, classic sweet chili sauce & sriracha mayo sauce. Also comes with a small salad with I believe an olive oil/balsamic vinegar dressing which was good. For mains, we had the Crazy Seafood & the Nasi Goreng fried rice. Crazy seafood was excellent. Comes with squid (calamari), prawns, big scallops & mussels. The Nasi Goreng fried rice was excellent as well. Comes with big chunks of bbq pork, chicken & strips of beef. We ordered with mild seasoning and it was the right amount of heat for our taste. We don't like the burn-your-tastebuds heat level of seasoning. For desert, we had the mango sticky rice. The sticky rice was a bit dry for our liking but tastes really good. This restaurant is part of the family that started Sawatdy restaurant on Brainbridge Island. The family has branched out throughout North Kitsap and owns a variety of other Thai restaurants. I am not crazy about Sawan Thai Kitchen, but in full transparency I've only visited once. I found the food to be presented beautifully, the plates were absolutely wonderful to look at. The interior of the restaurant is lovely as well. My biggest issue with the food is the chef's heavy-handedness using sugar. Most of my dishes tasted overly sweet even ones that I did not expect to have sugar or much sugar in them. I also don't think that the flavors overall connect the way they do at Sawatdy Thai restaurant. For some reason the food just missed real flavor. Perhaps it was because of the over whelming sugar that was a turn-off but I think in general it missed that spiciness that I'm used to with Thai food. And, I did ask for enough stars that my food should have been spicy. I admit that my feelings about this restaurant could be because I'm super biased having been to this restaurant only once and having much more experience in time at at the other. I will say, though, that in reality Thai food is generally good no matter where you get it, unless it's done very cheaply and without care. So, this restaurant absolutely puts care into what they serve. And, although I am not compelled to return, that care matters a great deal to me. read more

Sawan is the same owners as Kachai kitchen and Sawadty. All their locations are a good choice for some great Thai food. Sawan is a little further out of the way than the others tho located in Lynwood Center on Bainbridge Island. They are also only open 4:30PM-8PM and its not a giant place. So make sure to grab reservations if you can. Also, their service is AWFUL (phone service that is ;)), been coming here for years and never can't get a signal inside the restaraunt or even in the area. Under new ownership as of 2022, pad Thai delicious consistently spring rolls excellent

Heard about the new owners and decided to it a try. Oh my goodness! Each of our dishes was amazing. Had the tempura veggies for an appetizer and they were crisp, fresh and so flavorful with the sauce provided. Didn't get too fancy with eggplant with chicken, but it was served with a lot of rich sauce and beautiful veggies (gotta love those veggies). The pineapple fried rice with prawns was really flavorful, spicy, rich with veggies (!) and a good enough reason to go there. I am so happy with the changes, new menu and fabulous food. read more

I was a long time customer of the previous Sawan. The food was excellent and I preferred it over the other Thai restaurants in the area. After several meals from the New Sawan, I am still very disappointed. The new owners are wonderful enthusiastic people but the food is so bland it can't even pass for Chinese let alone Thai. The portions are very generous and everything is very freshly prepared but most of it is lacking in any spice or flavor in the absence of any kind of heat which is not even offered as an option as with the previous owners. I was a Sawan fan for the past few years over the other well known Thai place on the island that is actually closer to my home and I still love! But I'm dissatisfied with the new owners. I have to mirror what others were saying it's good but bland apparently it's a 5 star spice order there now? But the portions... for 20 dollars I get a cup and a half of food?
