Yeah...not a shining star. With so many restaurants in the West Loop, don't ever go here. The vibe is stiff and the staff is all over the place. Not sure we actually had a server or if it was the manager? Because of that, he never checked in on us once. Also the man pouring waters was pouring them insanely aggressively and the water was splashing everywhere. The bread they serve at the beginning was stale and tasted like shit. I got the Cacio e Pepe and it was COLD. Also, I ordered the one without the table side, and they still brought it table side. I thought maybe it was just because, but then they charged for it. It could also use way more pepper and at a restaurant like this, they should be coming around with grinders. My dirty martini only had one stuff blue cheese olive, and when I asked for another one the guy did not understand and brought me out a bowl of the most disgusting olives I have ever tasted. The space is stunning and the staff is on point. As an upscale Italian spot, I maybe expected a bit more though with pricepoint too, hence the 3 stars. We were a large group with 3 young kids with us and the staff did really great with them. TO NOTE: 20% gratuity is added to the bill for large groups (standard) the gratuity added is taxed. Our bill was $720, Automatic Gratuity $144 and tax $101.52 which would be 14.1% tax, but Chicago dining tax should be 10.75%. The portions are generous, I will say that. We did some family style of the following: FRITTO - solid calamari and I like that it's served with an aioli. BRESAOLA DELLA VALTELLINA - the meats are thinly sliced and I liked the chunks of parmesan GIOIA NEI PACCHERI Tableside - we don't really understand why this is presented tableside? They just mix it together but there's no real show? This was my favorite pasta of the night. The menu is confusing where it says it is $26 but that is per person and the dish is minimum 2 people so it's really $52. CACIO & PEPE Tableside - we got why this one was with the flames and it's in a cheese wheel. I did expect it creamier but it tasted OK. The pepper was not shining through weirdly enough. POLLO PATATE & ROSMARINO - chicken was pretty juicy but everything else was not super flavorful. Panna Cotta - had way too much vanilla I think. The restaurant had a fun, slightly upscale vibe. Plenty of street parking outside and they also valet for 15 bucks. They have the doors open in the summer for that great indoor/outdoor feel. Our waiter was friendly. But, another guy came by our table to ask if we were done when it was clear we were still working on our dinner (one of my biggest pet peeves). He also tried to box our food up when we were still eating. We ordered the burrata for the appetizer. Honestly,I felt like the burrata was just average. It came on a bed of arugula but nothing amazing about it. We did have to ask for bread to eat with the burrata - they gave us a couple of pieces of complimentary bread and olive oil after we asked. I ordered the table side cacio e pepe and it was delicious - definitely the star dish. They come by to the table with a 22-month aged parmigiano reggiano and the heated cheese. It created this creamy sauce and it was melt in your mouth delicious with the perfect amount of pepper. My friend ordered the pasta with meat ragu and said it was decent but nothing too exciting. Pleasantly surprised with my visit at Gioia! Had dinner with a group of friends on a Thursday, plenty of parking on Randolph (lucky) but they do have $15 valet. We started the evening with a couple of drinks at the bar, nice selection and full bar service with some elegant cocktails. We started with the Burrata and Polpette which were good. The Burrata wasn't anything out of this world, but a nice starter. The polpette were very good. I enjoyed my dish which was the linguine allo scoglio and my husband had the Rigatoni. Both dishes were excellent! I was discouraged to read reviews about poor service prior to coming, but have to admit, our service was excellent. I'm picky on Italian food! But was surprised to enjoy Gioia and would recommend coming. Anytime you hear people speaking Italian tells you the Italians only flock to real places - which was definitely happening here. read more

Sorely disappointed by the experience here at Gioia. Came here with a large group of gals to celebrate a friends birthday, and the service was actually some of the worst I have ever experienced. It's hard to really encapsulate how disrespected we felt- it was everything from how the waitstaff spoke to us in a commanding and condescending tone to how all the other tables around us received bread service but we were left ignored and waiting for them to take our order for I kid you not, about an hour. Even when we tried to politely get their attention, we were rudely dismissed. Yet, after the food arrived, the staff was rushing us and trying to take our plates alway before we could finish eating. The only reason they're getting 2 stars instead of 1 is because the ambience of the restaurant is nice and the food was fine- but I would highly recommend taking your business elsewhere at any of the other great establishments in West Loop. Came here with family so my husband could carb load pre-marathon. The ambiance was really nice and the space was decorated beautifully. However, coming from New York where I've had amazing Italian food my whole life, this place missed the bar on every single dish and it was extremely disappointing. The cacio e pepe was extremely oily and bland, lacking pepper flavor and creaminess. The meatballs in red sauce tasted like jarred red sauce and the meatballs were very dense. They confused our request for one dish to be dairy free for multiple dishes at the table to be dairy free which didn't make sense. Overall, the service was also really slow which I would've forgiven, recognizing it's the busiest night for pasta in Chi, if most the food was good but it just wasn't :( read more

It's really tough to stand out as an Italian restaurant in west loop with all the competition; however, I did enjoy my dinner here with no real complaints. The restaurant has a simple classic, elegant ambiance and filled up by the time we were done with dinner on this Saturday night. Complementary bread was a plus, and service was good. My Chianti went well with our meal - we started off with the side of potatoes, which turned out to be chips. It was a surprise to us, and the chips were rich and salty. We also had the carciofi salad, which was excellent and light. The gnocchi was nothing special, but the bucatini cacio e Pepe was delicious. Overall it was a good experience, but it's tough for this restaurant to stand out amongst so many great restaurants in the area. read more

Excellent Italian food at this upscale spot on Randolph Street's Restaurant Row. It's a square room, bar to the left, tables to the right as well as sidewalk seating when weather permits. Decor is sleek and modern, sound nicely muted for easy conversation. We were seated quickly, our reservation honored to the minute. Our server, Brandi, did a great job. Explained the menu, encouraged a couple of suggestions, and kept the meal moving at just the right pace. Thank you! Fresh bread and olive oil for dipping is served immediately while waiting for wine to be poured. Started with Arancina. A delicious baseball-sized ball of saffron rice, laced with taleggio is deep fried to golden brown. It's served atop a pool of pea-based sauce swirled with apple saba and garnished with pea shoots. The saffron makes it unique. The caramelized tart of the saba mixed with the sweetness of the peas are the perfect foil for the rice. An excellent start! On to the main course - Pici Toscana. Pici is best described as fat spaghetti. It's thick, hand-rolled and made without eggs which creates a unique taste and texture. It's served under a ladleful of outstanding ragu. As much meat as sauce, this is hearty and rich, earthy from a splash of chianti and delicious. I totally asked for an extra slice of bread to make sure I scooped up every last bit. Delicious! Shout out to the Branzino alla griglia. The branzino is served as a fillet, seared perfectly on the grill. Light, flaky, flavorful and perfectly seasoned. Another winner. Dinner for 4 was $209, including wine. Considering the quality of the food, service and atmosphere, very reasonable. Recommended! read more

My husband and I came for dinner for my birthday. Needless to say, it was disappointing and we would Not return. For a restaurant that charges a high fee to cancel, you would think they would be superior in their service. First the food: it was good, we have had better, but it wasn't bad food. Ambiance: pretty place What really ruined the experience was the server. First, it took a really long time before anyone even came to our table - about 15-20 minutes. Upon ordering we asked for the two table side options. We were told we have to have qty 2 (per order) , So we asked if we can order one of each. He said we could mix and match. Then when the bill came he tried charging us for two separate orders - essentially charging us twice. We reminded him of our conversation and he was quite rude. And then he went and got someone else that came back saying we had to pay twice and we told them we asked about this and were told we can mix and match. This went on a while and it was really off putting as we would not have ordered that way if they had not said we could. They eventually took it off the bill, but this is not the experience anyone should have especially when it was discussed prior to ordering. Very disappointing in their service for mediocre food on top of it. Their behavior and treatment of the situation really ruined the experience for my birthday. read more

The restaurant itself is beautiful on the inside. Very sleek and ambient. We sat in a cozy corner in a booth/couch. The food was also really good as was the black salt grapefruit cocktail. I'm only docking a star because the situation with the Gioia Nei Paccheri was weird. It's listed as $26, but if you want to order it you have to get two orders and they prepare it table side? So why not list it for $52. It was very delicious and I'm glad we got it, but preparing it table side is not special and there's no reason to do it. I would rather be able to have one order and no table side. The vodka pasta was good, but nothing to call home about. It needed some spice or something. Oh. My. God. This place is amaze-balls. I learned to cook from Grandma Fabiano and I am picky about my Italian food. Gioia does not disappoint in any way, shape or form. The real standout was the Cacio e Pepe with truffles, probably the best pasta I've ever eaten. But, the saffron risotto with grilled octopus was also delicious, and the tiramisu, infused (somehow??) with air took a somewhat tired dessert and made it fresh, new, and delicious. This review is for my two trips here -- My mother in law was visiting 2 months ago, and we were wanting to try an upscale Italian. So we came over here and enjoyed the experience. The wine selections were great and at the time, we had both table side pastas for mains and had the burrata, fried calamari, and meat balls as appetizers. We were in a food coma by the end of our meal. Since we had such a great first experience, when some friends wanted to try a place in the west loop, we suggested to go here for dinner! I didn't get pictures of the appetizer but we ordered the cheese and meat board, as we figured it would be good for sharing. It was fine, but since I have had the other appetizers, I would have enjoyed other choices more. For mains my husband and I got the cacio e Pepe tableside and the casoncelli. This time I think the cacio e Pepe should have had more cheese so when I return I might make that little request but the brown butter sauce of the casoncelli had a lot of flavor. If you like the richness of the sauce, it's great. My husband is a tomato sauce fan so he would have preferred if we chose the linguini - I guess we will do this next time. The desserts were heaven just like the first time. The place is gorgeous - super modern, comfy and seductive all rolled into one ambiance. The staff were a pleasure - they knew when to chime in with recommendations without being pushy. Great experiences both times, will return. read more

I love this place! Gioia means Italian joy and its become my go to for great Italian and it helps that its in walking distance of my residence. I have been here a few times...at the bar as well as seated at a table for dinner. There is a guy that works here named Edgar and he is always helpful and knowledgeable about whats good on the menu, so if you get him as a server, consider yourself lucky. He has great recommendations! The vibe here is cool as its a classic looking joint. Outdoor seating is available for the warmer temps as well. They have a nice selection of wine and their bartenders can always make you a very delicious drink such as a negroni, old fashioned, manhattan, etc.. Appetizers here are great! I highly recommend the Polipo: Roasted octopus, olive oil, potato puree, grape tomotoes, escarole and red wine sauce. The grilled calamari is very good as well. When it comes to the entree, I definitely love the Bucatini Cacio e pepe. The simplest dish, but very good! The Risotto is very good as well. The champion dish (shareable for 2) is the Gioia Nei Paccheri which comes with fresh tomato sauce and 22 month aged parmigiano. They make this amazing dish for you right by your table...you will love it! Desserts look pretty goo don the menu, but I've only tried the Millefoglie which is a puff pastry napoleon with vanilla cream mousse, strawberry tartar, pistachio gelato...its very good! The food was absolutely amazing. The steak was cooked perfectly, the pasta was more savory than sweet and was delicious. I don't like fennel and it does have a heavy fennel flavor but not enough to ruin the dish for me. The server was prompt and friendly. My only complaint, and outside of the restaurants control, there was a table of ladies who seemed to have a bit of wine and were talking over one another and screaming laughing, at 7:30pm. Best meatballs we've ever had! We've been judging Italian restaurants based on their meatballs and this place hit it out of the park. We decided to try Gioia after hearing good things about it and I'm very glad we did! After ordering our food, our waiter frequently passed bread to our table! We paired the bread with our appetizers, the burrata and salmone affumicato. As a cheese and salmon lover, I have nothing to complain about the great start to the dinner.  We also ordered the gioia nei paccheri, which is freshly prepared by the table side! Open only for 10 days at the time of my visit, Gioia Ristorante Pastificio had none of the new restaurant "blues" that new places often show. The staff was spot on, the food was delicious and the ambiance was just where you want to sit and catch up with friends. We went early on a weeknight so getting a table was not a problem but make a reservation as by the time we were leaving, it was filling up fast. First we enjoyed a well poured cocktail at the beautiful bar which gave us a chance to look around and check the place out. When our table was ready- we were shown to an intimate table for two just off the main dining room. It was lovely. The dining room is done is shades of gray with light wood table tops so the contrast is quite striking. There is also a great patio out front that is very inviting but those tables were booked on the night we were there. Our server, Turo, was over in a flash telling us about things he liked on the menu as well as suggesting an Italian blend wine to go with my dinner. While I was willing to go with his recco- the nice thing was that he brought over two different wines to give me a taste without me even asking him to do so-- great customer service. The rest of our dinner went equally as well. We had the warm seafood salad and soft shell crab as appetizers. Both were good but that seafood salad was out of this world- fresh, with nice large pieces of seafood served simply. Check out the pic- I've never had such a large and tender piece of octopus and I eat it every chance i get. For our entrees- I had the branzino and my friend went with the pork three ways. Both were well prepared and very good. I wish we had had room for dessert but I guess that just gives us an excuse to come back. I recently visited the newly opened and elegant Italian restaurant in West Loop. The food was delicious and the service was awesome! They gave great recs and frequently checked in on us to make sure everything was good. The cacio e pepe was saucy and had great flavors. The tomato confit was my favorite part of the burrata dish. The fried balls were bitter and I couldn't really tell what leaf that was (not my fav part). My favorite park about the dinner was all the fresh bread they had to offer. Everything was fresh and of the best quality (the olive oil ). The vibes of this place are more upscale and refined so it's perfect for celebrations. read more

I visited Gioia on a Monday evening with 5 friends (party of 6 total) for a birthday celebration. The restaurant is very elegant and great for a date night or company dinner. I would not suggest it for small children. We sat at a long table right in front of the bread. We were served water immediately. The waiter then came and took our drink orders. It seemed like eternity before we were offered bread but maybe I was just starving and we were sitting right in front of it. For appetizers we shared the burrata, the pizza (I don't remember the fancy name) and the octopus (also don't remember the fancy name and I'm too lazy to go look. Lol) All the apps were amazing! I'd love to order the pizza and octopus again. So tasty!! The octopus had a grilled / smoked flavor and was the perfect texture. The pizza has an amazing flavor as well. The burrata was good, but nothing stood out about it. Just good fresh burrata. For my meal I selected the Branzino with an order of the chips. The branzino also came with a side of veggies. The chips were good but needed a pinch of salt to help bring out the flavors. The fish was excellent. Very well cooked. Over-all it was a great experience. I gave it four stars because I'm not yearning to return, but I def wouldn't be opposed to it....if that makes any sense. we were here on a Saturday night with party of 7 people. Originally booked a Chinese restaurant, but obviously we mixed up the time of booking, and at last minute we found out that our table is gone. So we were desperately trying to booking another restaurant, and found this one still have table available for 7. We went in with some doubt, but the restaurant looks nice inside, and we were seated shortly. And ordered 5 different appetizers and each of us get an entree. Wow, the food is amazing! Though the price is not cheap. With 7 of us, without dessert, we walk out with a bill above 700$! Include the bottle of red wine. We are grateful we got this place available at last minute. Service is prompt and efficient. One of the guest had some concern about his steak, the manager came and recooked a new fillet. What a service! I'm a big fan fan of pasta and this place lived up to its hype. It was different but delicious. The vast part was the tableside pasta. The ambiance was really loud. I had to talk loudly to have a conversation in which I'm pretty sure the couple next to us listened to everything we said lol. The service was decent waiter barely checked in unless we made eye contact and had to call him over. So when ordering a dessert be mindful that the sauces are made from wine! What a disappointment. I have been wanting to check this place out for awhile. We were going to Hawks game with friends and thought it would be a great place. We sat at the table for 15 minutes before anyone took our order. Menu was boring. Food was underwhelming. But what really made us mad was we ordered a $125 bottle of wine. our waiter tried to screw us on a bottle of wine. We ordered a nice $125 dollar of wine and he tells us he gave us a comparable. BS. We booked a reservation for Gioia a few weeks prior to our dinner. We were greeted upon arrival and sat after a few minutes of waiting. The restaurant was quite full at 7 pm on a Saturday. The ambiance was exceptional. The decor and design felt intentional and cozy. A few of the tables were spaced a bit close together, but this seems to be expected anywhere in the city. We sat in a corner booth and could look out at the entire restaurant, a great spot to sit in my opinion. The service was exceptional from start to finish. Our server was attentive and gave great recommendations for both food and drink. We were able to pace the dishes ourselves and order as we wanted. The food was incredible. It certainly ranks at the top of my Italian meals in Chicago. The burrata antipasti were unlike anything I have tasted before with the tomato confit. We ordered two pasta dishes, one special and one orecchiette with octopus ragu. The orecchiette was my favorite. The additional burrata in the dish added richness and paired well with the spice from the peppers. The octopus flavor was not too overpowering either. We finished our meal with two espresso martinis and a chocolate torta. The martinis were delicious and well made. The chocolate torta was rich and decadent with a fun garnish on top. All in all, our experience at Gioia was fantastic and I would highly recommend a visit for groups of any size. I can't wait to come back in the Spring to try their seasonal specials. read more

Very hit and miss spot. Tried for the first time the other night. Service was essentially non-existent, and overall unwelcoming. The FOH manager needs to get it together. Our server barely said any words to us. No intro to the restaurant, just "what can I get you". That said, the order was taken. Drinks were delivered promptly. Zero recommendations offered, zero discussion about the wine list. (Owners: you are missing sales by how inept your FOH is) We ordered a round of apps-- Crab Cakes: Very good Meatballs: Bad. Dry, room temp, flavorless. Honestly not sure how a meatball could be this bad. for $15 mind you. Server never asked why we didn't eat them. Burrata: They forgot to drop this, so our entire dinner was delayed ~30min. That said, it was very good. Main Course: Rigatoni: This is honestly the dish to get. Was far and away the best. Tortelli (special): Good, but served room temp, a little pricey at $28. But not bad. Linguini: bland. Broccolini: oily, but good. Overall, you pay a lot and get nothing in the way of service, and varying quality among the dishes. The GM never once touched our table. The Chef was walking around sitting at his friends tables and never bothered to check on his customers. This is probably the most confusing part, you can prevent negative reviews and negative customer experiences when you have a FOH that cares about its guests. It has me wondering, who is this restaurant for? Certainly not for their guests. With so many great places in Chicago, I would never recommend this spot. More miss than hit, with owners/management that very clearly doesn't care. read more

I came here during a trip to chicago and it was absolutely amazing. I loved the food here and the chocolate cake was really good. I loved posting the food I had onto Twitter (@jonahexplorer) where I talk about different restaurants I go to. I would give the food 10/10. Definitely worth coming to again! The server was really nice as well and service was unmatched. he constantly made sure that we felt comfortable as well as getting us water and other little small things. I really wanted to like it more- but it fell flat. The concept of Gioia is great. It was incredibly crowded which meant for this particular restaurant- meant it was loud. I had a difficult time hearing my friend sitting across from me. The cocktails were expensive for what they were. The bread came with some olive oil to dip the bread in. That olive oil was really good and had a nice pepper bite at the end of it. The Arugula Salad I got as a starter - was far too big for a starter and the lemon dressing wasn't great on it. My friend and I both got the meat ragu- the noodles were on point and clearly quality. The sauce though- meh. And the desserts- I had chocolate cake it was only ok. When you walk in, you immediately feel like you're in a Italian restaurant. The atmosphere was amazing & the food was even better! We started with a bottle of wine (good wine selection) & burrata. This was my first time having tomato confit and it was great! I wasn't too sure what the small bites were around the burrata & it had an earthy taste to it. Ambiance was nice but it was clear that the server was annoyed with our party when couple of our guests ordered iced tea. From that point forward, the interactions were short and not much engagement. The server did not touch the table throughout the meal to see how the appetizers and meals were going. Food was okay and not memorable. Overpriced from my perspective.
