It's usually a nice treat today find hole-in-the-wall strip mall places in the middle of nowhere. That's exactly Gion. Thanks to Yelp, there's no way I would have found this place. The sign out front says Vietnamese, but the menu also includes Chinese and Thai offerings. Whenever I see Bun Bo Hue on a menu, I order it because it is a stupid complicated dish to make, and takes a lot of time. The other parts of the menu included Pho, Hu Tieu, Banh Mi, broken rice plates, curry, and bubble tea. Before I get to the food let's talk service. I was greeted pretty much immediately, but the flow of the restaurant is weird in that the main counter is in the back of the place as opposed to the front like any other restaurant, so I had to wait until the host/server noticed me and to come greet me. Perhaps this is why there are the "weird feeling" reports from other Yelpers. Another weird thing was that they took a little while to get to me for my order, and the place was not slammed. It was lunch on a Sat, and they had 3-4 people working the dining room. I didn't understand. Anyways, I ordered and started Yelping, but the food took WAY longer than other Vietnamese places to get my Bun Bo Hue. This dish is literally a 5-min ordeal, as all of the elements are prepped. Most places only take 5-min, even the crazy places like iPho or Quang. Gion took like 20min. I don't get it. Good thing I wasn't in a hurry. As for the Bun Bo Hue, it was delightful. The broth was full-flavored, and I didn't have to adjust it a bit. It leaned heavy on the sweet side, which I don't mind, but others might. I liked the dish a lot, except for the fact that they skimped and only gave me one piece of stewed shank, and a whole lot of sliced pork and pork cake. I'm much more used to other places offering mostly shank or stewed chuck, and the others as filler, not the other way around. In all for being in the middle of nowhere and serving up this tasty bowl of Bun Bo Hue is a feat. I only bring up the bad with the good to be thorough, not to discourage would be guests from rejoicing that a place like this exists in a part of town where good Asian fare is practically non-existent. For Suburban Pho/Vietnamese, they rate up there with Vietnam House (Brooklyn Park), Pho126 (Blaine), and A Chau (North St. Paul). read more

Yummy!! Delicious Vietnamese spot. I will consider this my regular spot from now on. Beef Pho tasted so fresh & flavorful... the delicious broth & thin noodles made everything taste better. The potstickers look and taste like they're made from scratch, they have a thicker dough & a great tasting filling. I wish they had more filling though, as they were quite skimpy. Nice little Vietnamese restaurant with some really yummy food. The wife had the WonTon noodle soup. I'm no fan of soup, but the broth is super delicious. Really enjoyed it and if we ever get back to Minnesota again, I would be a soup customer. Also had the Bun and it was a nice reasonably sized serving with all fresh and tasty ingredients. I read the mixed reviews, and wondered what I was getting into, but I had a very good experience. I came during the busy lunchtime (11:45 am) and was greeted and seated within a few minutes. Server was reasonably attentive considering the crowd and labor shortage issues all food service business are facing these days. Prices were very fair ($5 Spring Rolls, $10 Pho, $4 Iced Vietnamese Coffee). Food was all fresh and tasty. Portion sizes were generous (e.g., I had to bring home most of the Pho and I am not a skimpy eater). I thought it was an excellent value for the price. I am not sure why they have a few bad reviews re: portions, prices, service, etc. Maybe I came on a "good" day, as some stated it can be inconsistent, but I will be back for sure! read more

Wanted to try this place as I saw it got good reviews, I give it two stars and probably won't return. I got takeout here last night and first off, I tried to phone in my order but the phone number went straight to voice-mail. I guess when they're super busy, they don't bother answering the phone, that's the reason the guy who took my order in person gave me. I ordered a grilled pork banh mi and an order of pork/shrimp spring rolls. I had high hopes of the food being good as there were a lot of diners in the restaurant. I think this is the first banh mi I've ever seen with onions in it. Not what I wanted but whatever. The first bite seemed good then as I kept eating it, the pork in the middle of the sandwich was SUPER salty, it overpowered every other flavor. Not worth ordering again. Then I tried the spring rolls, they had a very slight taste of shrimp and no pork flavor. The dipping sauce was also very thin and runny, that mixed with the rolls that weren't tied very tightly led to some of their noodles falling out into the sauce. Consistent good food and good service. I've ate here at least 2 dozen times. I love the pho and bombahue and egg rolls. I invited a bunch of friends here and they loved it too. I just wish they were open on Sundays. That's only complaint. Don't let the strip mall location dissuade you from coming, it's pretty common for most good hole in the wall. read more

I am glad that this restaurant is not far from my office. Vietnamese food is one of my favorite cuisines and I frequently try to visit Vietnamese restaurants. However where I work there not very many options and Gion happens to be near the office and it happens to be actually very very good. I love everything on the menu. Pho is authentic and very delicious. Egg rolls and spring rolls are awesome. They get busy around lunch. I have never been here for dinner. Highly recommended. read more

Every now and then, you stumble upon a restaurant in a strip mall and it totally exceeds your expectations. That's how it was with Gion. It's not fancy. It's not the best Vietnamese food I've ever had. But for the middle of New Hope in a strip mall, it was definitely serviceable and I would totally add it to my list of options for nearby cheap eats. Gion is not fancy but again, it's very serviceable. It's bigger than it looks from the outside, and we had no trouble being seated immediately. The menu is not huge but it covers all the bases. You can get appetizers including those wonderful Vietnamese fresh spring rolls and your standard potstickers. You can get a bahn mi sandwich, a bowl of pho or Vietnamese soup or pad thai. They also do a really nice Vietnamese coffee. We got the spring rolls, which were good and most notably came with a huge ramekin of peanut sauce for dipping. Then I got the shrimp pad thai, which was pretty good. Flavorful, not overcooked, a big bowl of noodles with fresh cilantro and a big fresh lime wedge and a generous number of shrimp. It was not the best pad thai I've ever had but it definitely satisfied my craving. My husband got the noodle dumpling soup, which was light, flavorful and full of delicious egg noodles and dumplings. The only thing I felt was lacking was that I wished they kept fish sauce on the table along with Siracha and hoisin for those of us who like to add extra. Service was fine, pretty passable. The man who rang me up seemed excited that we were new customers and was very engaging. We ordered two of the more expensive items on the menu and still walked out under $25. Realistically if I want amazing Vietnamese, I would go to Pho 79 or Lu's Sandwiches for a bahn mi. But if I want something quick without driving into town, Gion will definitely do the trick. We tried Gion tonight based on a recommendation and we were sadly disappointed. The establishment smelled like a mixture of feet and must. The spring rolls were dull and had a sandy texture internally. The Chicken Pad Thai was OK but no where near the best that we have had. The fried rice had no flavor and was over cooked. The stir fried veggies with chicken was inedible. The broccoli was cooked well, but the mushrooms gave the whole dish an earthy smell and aftertaste. The chicken was clearly not cleaned properly as we found a bone in our dish. We wanted to like this place but will not be coming back. I'd go back pho sho. I'm not a pho-king expert, but this is my fav. Sorry, I can not write a review of a place where I ate pho without incorporating at least one pho-king reference. Came here today based on the urging and review of my Yelp buddy, Darcy W. Gion did not disappoint. Thanks for the recommendation, Darcy! Gion does not look like much from the outside or the inside. The location is in a nondescript strip mall just off of Highway 169 in New Hope. Often, the best places are in these strip malls that you would otherwise never thinking of going to. The inside is spartan, at best. However, they have added some artwork to the walls but the concrete floors remain. Kinda felt like a big storage locker converted into a restaurant. Walked in quite a bit past the lunch rush, and there was hardly anybody in the place. Waitress came over right away and was chop-chop, Johnny-on-the-spot getting me seated and taking my order. I was advised that pho was the way to go here, but they do have an extensive menu. Got the chicken pho with a side of the cream cheese wontons. The cream cheese wontons came out in a matter of minutes. They were just OK for me. The cream cheese was kind of clumpy and not melted the way that I like. Will pass on these and try the spring rolls the next time that I go instead. Pho came out before I had even finished the wontons. Based on the picture that Darcy posted, I was expecting the broth to be somewhat darker but this broth was pretty crystal clear. This pho was pretty plain Jane, but I mean that as nothing but a compliment. Oftentimes, simplicity and few ingredients make the best dishes. First, time I had pho at Ngon, I got it with oxtail which was fatty and gristly. Second time, I got it with beef at Pho 79 but it came with too many vegetables. Third time is the charm. Just right today. Giant and tasty bowl of chicken soup Vietnamese style. The only vegetables they put it in it, I think, were onions, chives and parsley. Perfect for my tastes. Options at Gion can be hit-or-miss: some items are enjoyable, others are Americanized and/or disappointing. I think the restaurant caters mostly to the working crowd. We came for a team lunch during work, and it reminded me more of your stereotypical Asian takeout restaurant as opposed to some of the fresher and more authentic restaurants in other parts of the city. Personally, I found the pho quite good - though I would've preferred less noodles and more of the good stuff (meat and veggies). Our appetizers, on the other hand, were a lackluster. We tried the egg rolls (good), the potstickers (so-so), and the crab rangoon (disappointing). Feel free to stop by if it's been on your list or if you live or work very close. Wow what a random area for a Vietnamese restaurant. Right away I was concerned if it was authentic or not. So here it is: Spring rolls - Nasty It was sour and I felt like the meat was old even though there wasnt much of it. Pho - Wasnt too bad! I was actually pretty impressed that it did not taste bad after eating that sad spring roll. It was a little on the oily side and touch of sweetness but that I can deal with. Banh Mi - I ordered to go, I was full for lunch and wanted to treat myself to a nice snack later on. I did toast the bread, it was ok and boring. Could use more fillings and more of a fresher bread. Just do yourself a favor and go to Brooklyn Park or Mpls for something more flavorful. If you live close and dont want to go far, Pho would be the best option. I've moved Gion up to five stars. As with any restaurant, it comes down to price, selection, quality of the food, and service that is friendly and efficient. They are on point in every regard. On a Monday evening they were nearly full; nonetheless, our wait person got to our table immediately after we were seated and subsequently took our order which came out of the kitchen shortly thereafter. The Pho was as good as the best I've had anywhere in the Twin Cities. All the staff on hand were hustling like crazy to keep their customers accommodated and moving food out of the kitchen. A terrific place to satisfy your yearning for Vietnamese fair and not steal your billfold in the process. Also, the clientele is very diverse. I friendly mix of ethnicity, age and gender. Prices are super reasonable. $8 for a bowl-o-pho that'll more than fill you up. I had the classic pho (beef and meatballs) and the Vietnamese iced coffee. Both were superb, and I know I'll be going back to satisfy the cravings next time I'm in the area. The restaurant is definitely a no-frills outfit, with a relatively plain interior, straightforward service and presentation, and an unassuming spot in a strip mall nestled between a Caribou and a barber shop. But the pho speaks for itself and the prices are hard to beat. Four stars because the desserts and the Chinese food here are lacking, to say the least. Don't bother. We went to Gion the other night when I wasn't feeling well, and Pho sounded like the perfect thing. I live only a few blocks away from this restaurant and have never gone, but we thought we would give it a try. We were seated right away and our order was taken quickly. Our spring rolls and cream cheese wontons came out very quickly and were both delicious! The spring rolls were just the right size and served with the delicious traditional spring roll sauce on the side. The cream cheese wontons were fried to perfection, and the feeling was delicious and creamy. I had the traditional beef pho and my partner had the pho with tripe, beef, etc. Both had just the right amount of flavor, and the beef was cooked perfectly. The bowls are huge so we had plenty to take home. There's nothing fancy about this place, but the food is wonderful. I'm so glad it's right around the corner and we will definitely be going back. read more
