There was no wait on a Sunday afternoon. Staff was friendly and service was good. They changed our plates and silverware in between the dishes. We ordered a small Chicken parmesan spaghetti and a small The Special - Deep Dish Pizza. I was super hungry but after half of the spaghetti and half a piece of the pizza I was already full. We had more than half of the pizza leftover to bring home. Chicken parm spaghetti was average, not bad. The crust of the deep dish pizza was crunchy and tasted somewhat like biscuit (U.K. definition), which I liked. The cheese was very stretchy and gives a good pull and photo op); but there was WAY too much cheese, just not my thing, and not as much veggie / meat that was supposed to be in there. I'm not sure if I would come back again but if I do, I would not get deep dish pizza here. P.S. The bill was ~$50. Only downside is the wait...but that's only because of how good the pizza is. On a Friday night at 6:45pm, we had about an hour wait to get seated and 1.5hr wait for pizza. Luckily, our hotel (Embassy Suites Chicago Downtown) had a free evening reception with cocktails and snacks before we left and appetizers/salads could be ordered while we waited for the pizza. I love the pizza here but the salad is probably my favorite salad. I think it's called the house salad; a tangy, heavy lemon, vinaigrette with generous shaved Asiago and tomatoes--refreshing! Pizza is traditional Chicago deep dish; thick melting mozzarella and topped with lightly tangy tomatoes. The manager brought our pizza, apologized for the wait, and happily served us. I thought this was a nice touch and went the extra mile. We'll be back (as always, lol). read more

I've dined here a few times, but most recently got the following: Family style meal: A medium two topping deep dish pizza, caesar salad, and chocolate chip cookies. Deep dish pizza: I got all-beef meatballs and green peppers for my deep dish pizza. The pizza was well cooked with meatball and green pepper well layered along side cheese and topped with sauce. The meat to cheese to sauce ratio was well balanced. The caesar salad was your typical salad with lettuce and cheese. A well mixed salad, which came with caesar dressing, which was great. The only thing missing from the salad were croutons which I like to have on my caesar salad. The chocolate chip cookies were soft and well sweetened. They went well as after pizza dessert. I don't understand the hype for this place. I waited 30 minutes to be seated and then once seated waited over 30 minutes for a pizza. As you can imagine I expected the pizza to make up for the wait. It didn't. My waitress was pleasant enough but honestly she seemed a smidge overwhelmed with the amount of people she had to tend to. Still, my cup was never left empty. So kudos for that. But my tummy, lord my tummy had to wait. Perhaps I'm simply not into the deep dish pizza? But dare I say, I've enjoyed a deep dish from Uno so that can't be the case. The crust here was dry and brittle like, and crust is usually what wins pizza for me. I just don't agree with the hype I guess. We ordered a cheese deep dish and salad. Pizza is intense. Was super fresh and if you love LOVE cheese (I mean I thofigt I did) you will enjoy. When it says it serves 2-3, it could serve 5! Salad was great. Dressing is good lemon vinaigrette, would probably do light Gorgonzola. Pasta is it sounded weird but was fine. Takeout was running a bit behind but it was Friday evening. We surveyed friends who are Chicago natives to find the most recommended restaurant for deep dish Chicago style pizza. Everyone said Giordano's. So that's where we headed post-marathon. Of course it takes a while for the pizza to cook. Plan on 45 min-1 hour. Just drink a beer and eat a small salad. No big deal. We ordered the smallest pizza available and it was still enough food for two people to have for two meals each. Our hotel room had a fridge so that wasn't a problem at all. Good pizza but not "life changing/earth shattering" stuff. We did it because it was the touristy thing to do. We walked right in and got 2 seats at the bar. They said it would be an hour until the Pizza was ready, which is fine I don't mind waiting. The local beer was good but the house wine wasn't that good (we're spoiled in California). We ordered "the special" deepdish style. We got the small and still had 2 slices left after. It was filling and good and so cheesy yummy. Tbh I've had better pizza but I don't regret going at all. I have to say I'm very under-impressed. The pizza is super heavy and cheesy. The dough was undercooked. The wait was 45 mins for indoor dinning and pick up to go orders. I'm going off of memory, so I could be referring to this incorrectly-- My friend and I got a personal size build-your-own deep dish, while our other friend decided to order a small build-your own deep dish. I built mine with pepperoni, sausage, roasted garlic, and spinach. We waited 45 minutes for our order to arrive, which is called out on the menu. I'm so glad I ordered the personal size. I had a Pepsi with it (sodas, I think, are unlimited refills), and I was only able to finish one soda, along with my pizza. I felt full without feeling overstuffed. (I also didn't want to carry any leftovers with me, so that was a huge plus). Still had a slight food coma, though haha. As for my friend that ordered the small, he was able to finish 2 slices before he had to tap out. He enjoyed his leftovers for dinner and breakfast haha Overall, the crust was a little dough-y for me, but that's fine because I don't really like crusts at all. Whoever comes to Chicago will inquire about where to get the best deep dish pizza, and you will hear consensus to go to a Giordano's. A quick search leads you to several locations, but at least this one is massive, almost an entire block. We followed the recommendations and reserved a table. During check-in, there was a sign that said you had to order pizza up front, but we were taken to our table directly. The wait for deep dish for 45 minutes is not suggestive, not even for an individual portion. Do not go if you are in a rush, cause this is really what you came in for. We ordered some appetizers; small Caesar salad which was a pretty medium size to me, and some calamari. The appetizers came out pretty fast. The only reason why I am not convinced is, and this will be a very unpopular opinion, but I am not sold on the crust. I tried the classic deep dish with pepperoni, green peppers, and onions. The crust was really pretty thick and chewy. Glad to have tried, liked the lively ambiance, but not something I'd crave when I think of pizza. read more

Decent pizza but nothing remarkable. We were here at about 5:30 pm on a Thursday and not many people weee inside. We knew it'd take a bit to get the pizza so we ordered it with out appetizers. Our waiter was attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. We ordered wings but they were lukewarm when they came out and took almost as long as the pizza so we weee like whatever. Had to try Giordanos after Dave gave them a 8.4 rating... and the food definitely lived up to its expectations. We started out with Buffalo wings and a Caesar salad. The Buffalo wings were so thick and spicy, delicious! The Caesar was packed with parm, which I love. Also like how they have different portion size options for the salads. I've had deep dish pizza several times before here in Chicago: Pequod's - The benchmark deep dish Lou Malnatis - Sells more frozen deep dish than anyone on earth William's Inn - iconic crust and a few more pizzeria's scattered around this bustling city. But, Giodarno's, here on the Gold Coast, just made their Special Deep Dish Pizza seem a cut above (sorry another bad pun) all of the others. I'm going to back peddle for a minute: Pequod's makes a superior pie than all of them put together, It's just their one hour wait for a table, on top of the one hour wait to cook your pie, in addition to the one hour it takes you to eat the damn thing, sort of takes their pie out of contention. Giodarno's Special Pizza is a thing of beauty. Our large Special was packed with sausage, onions and mushrooms. I mean this pie weighed about as much was a professional's bowling ball. It's heavy. The red sauce they use is this rich, full bodied concoction that just adds this "flavor" note to this pizza we had today. The online ordering at Giodarno's is a snap. They hit my pick-up time on with 30 seconds to spare. The team orchestrating all of this was as professional can be. Cheese bread was ciabatta Italian bread with cheese on top, the sauce was tasty. this was missing garlic and crispiness. Nothing special with this appetizer. 2. Stuffed deep dish pizza. Compared to thin slice and ny pizza it is more filling. If you are a cheese lover then you will definitely enjoy this. The meatball and mushroom was delicious, juicy and had an equal amount of meat and cheese. the sausage and onion pie didn't blow my mind and had more cheese than sausage. The sauce tasted fresh. 3. The best part of the appetizer was the cheesy bread. It was well-seasoned and well-baked. The pizza itself takes about 30 minutes to make so we munched on our appetizers first. They have an excellent lunch special Monday through Friday until 3pm. The deep dish personal pizza from the lunch specials are premade so they come out fast. The pizza is delicious but on the saltier side. The crust isn't soggy because the pepperoni and cheese separate the sauce from the crust. Parmesan fries were nice and crispy. This is one of the originals of deep dish pizza in Chicago and a must try if you are in town. It is very noisy inside so if you want to have a conversation outside dining is preferable but if you don't mind yelling inside is great. We started off with a Caesar salad while we waited the 40 minutes for our pizza to cook, the salad was excellent and the medium size was perfect for the two of us. The small pizza is way to big for two people but there is always breakfast. The crust is flakey and the pizza dense with cheese. We popped in on a pub crawl after a Cubs game. The bar was inviting and the staff was friendly and efficient, opening a new bottle of cab for my girlfriend. I stuck with beer, which was served quickly and cold. We went with the calamari, and it was slightly above average in flavor. The serving could have been a little bigger, and there were two whole octopi in the mix. The pizzas we saw served looked very good, so we will definitely give the pie a try the next time we are in town. Look at pic, it shows how stiff and dey that dough was, not crispy and thin and the dough seemed half cooked. On our first night in Chicago, we went to Giordano's for some deep dish pizza experience. Honestly, I was disappointed when I saw the outside, reminded me of a typical chain restaurant. Which made me think I was fooled into a marketing scheme. Upon entering, it was a very crowded Thursday night crowd, we were checking-in and it would be 20-30 minutes wait to be seated, but around an hour to get the pizza. They had a system, where you can pre-order the pie, while waiting for your seats! Finally seated, we ordered drinks and the bruschetta....it was amazing! I don't have photos but it was a great balance of taste and texture. Well expected! Shortly after, we got our pizza and we were very pleased going deep for the first time! We ordered the Chicago classic (pepperoni, mushroom, green pepper, onions and tons of cheese). We would recommend it, just be careful not to order too much, our small pie would have fed 3-4 people, especially with an appetizer. Service was fast and friendly, very efficient! (Sausage, green pepper, onion & mushroom) To be fair, the ingredients did not seem to be taken from a lower level of Grade B supplier. Reading about Mama Giordanos story from the menus rear, it evoked nothing as everyone has a Mama Somebodys Italian eatery somewhere near. And just using the term Mama in a restaurants name just smacks of trouble to me, confirmed again. Digging hard for a single saving grace from a food perspective, sadly I can't give more than the one -- I really wanted to though. Having no scrumptious Chicago deep dish tale upon my unvictorious return home, to tell my hyper affectionate pizza loving buddies about is quite unfortunate. A saving grace from an employee level? Two affirmative & one negative. Affirmative: The female bartender who was a dear and brought true professionalism to this tourist only eatery.
