Before I went to Chicago, I was hell bent on trying some real Chicago pizza. Giordano's was our first stop when we arrived late one Friday night and they turned us away :(. Our last day in Chicago my friend Cailyn N. decided we couldn't leave without trying real deep dish so we headed to Giordano's in the rain. We walked up to the less than friendly hostess who hastily took our name and snapped that it would be a 45 minute wait. Blahhh. I hope this was going to be worth the wait and the money. It wasn't. The food was less than memorable and just, too much. The pizza was super thick and didn't even taste good enough to justify the amount of food there was. I was honestly very disappointed. And then, a co-worker who lives in Chicago told me he's not a fan of the deep dish either. Instead they prefer the thin crust and flavors of New York City style pizza. read more

I LOVED the Chicago style pizza at Giordano's! I ordered a small Fresh Spinach pizza. The menu said that the six slice pie served two people but I tapped out at two slices. It was like completing a Man vs. Food challenge just to get those two slices down. It tasted like a really good spinach lasagna made with crust instead of noodles. Delicious but very filling. For some reason I thought Chicago style deep dish pizza meant a 2" crust topped with sauce, cheese and toppings. Instead the pizza layers were (from the bottom up) a thin flour crust, cheese, toppings, another thin crust, and pizza sauce on top. When I say "thin" I mean it was about the thickness of two matzo crackers stacked. I didn't love everything about the experience. We had a 30-35 minute wait to be seated. I knew the place would be crowded since it's a Chicago institution. Still I wasn't prepared to wait with so many people in such a little space. It felt like being on a crowded dance floor. Also, between the 50 or so people waiting in the lobby and the full dining room it was comically loud--think high school cafeteria loud. Then someone decided to add background music to the mix. With songs like "Why Can't We Be Friends," "Pick Up the Pieces" and King Floyd's "Groove Me" blaring over everything it took serious effort to hold conversation. High marks for Giordano's pizza but for a more sedate dining experience, I would recommend trying to schedule your trip during off peak hours. read more

I have to say, I'm not even a pizza fan and this place has taken my taste buds by storm. Normally I don't eat pizza because I think it's too greasy, too cheesy, too much dough, too little dough, too crispy, too soft, not enough flavor, or bad tomato sauce amongst the hundreds of other excuses I have. However, at Giordanos, you just order, wait 30-35 minutes and hope for the best. I knew I had to try it because it was a Chicago landmark almost and you can't visit a city without trying what it's famous for. I'm glad now reading Veronica's review that I did not go to Lou Malnati's since I was about to visit there. Needless to say, I fell in love with pizza at Giordanos. Nowhere else have I tasted such a flavorful, melty, cheesy pizza full of smokey meats and sausages. The sauce was amazing and that's the only word I can find for it because no other word suffices. It was absolutely delicious and I still dream about that stuffed Chicago pizza til today. Delicious, delicious pizza! This is the second time I have eaten at Giordano's in 4 years, but it was as good as when I ate it during my first trip to Chicago during a freezing cold April. We got to enjoy the outdoor patio seating during gorgeous weather. In anticipation of both the 45 minute wait and the carb-y, caloric heaven that is their famous stuffed deep dish pizza (a classic pepperoni, for the kiddo who doesn't like "chunks" of vegetables), we dove into a family-style house salad. More than adequate for 4, it was sweet, crunchy and tangy, with a nice blend of interesting textures and tastes. Served with chunks of ciabatta, if you added a protein to the salad, it would have made a filling and delicious entree. But we didn't come to Giordano's to eat salad for an entree. The pièce de résistance (I can spell it, but I can't pronounce it), was the delicious, crunchy golden-crusted, melt-in-your mouth-flaky exterior, ooey gooey, cheesy delight that is the stuffed deep dish pizza. So rich and yummy and hearty and flavorful! The sauce is sweet and savory and the cheese oozes luxuriously. I wolfed my two pieces down in no time. Between the three of us ( two adults and one preteen, all with hearty appetites), a SMALL pizza, which is cut into six wedges, was more than sufficient for us three. We didn't have to cart around leftovers, but we were all full (the salad and ciabatta beforehand, and my husband's two beers probably helped with that). Our server was very friendly and thorough. With the deep dish pizza, huge family style salad, and two tall beers, the bill came to $56. But I always try to be the hostess with the mostess so we took our Dallas visitors to Giordano's Pizzeria for lunch today so they could see what this deep dish pizza craze is all about. The visitors seemed to enjoy their pepperoni deep dish, while my fiance and I split a thin crust small pizza with mushrooms on it. I think the fiance was a bit disappointed I made him eat thin crust, but he was happy once he tasted it. I thought it was just OK. I'll take Bricks over Giordanos anyday, but of course that didn't stop me from eating 4 squares. Oh, and don't expect to be fed right away. There is ALWAYS a wait here and deep dish pizza takes awhile to make...but most feel the end reward is worth the wait. As for you thin crust lovers...make your way over to Bricks intead. read more

This is the flagship Giordano's - one of the main competitors in the race for the title of the best Chicago deep dish pizza. Welps, I do have to say that the pizza here is really good - it's ginormous and super thick! Unlike your standard pizza, authentic deep dish comes stuffed with a generous amount of cheese, toppings of your choice, and is smothered with loads of tomato sauce on top. On its own, this place is great, but when you compare it to Lou Malnati's...the tomato sauce just doesn't stand up or taste nearly as fresh. Also, the crust is kind of TOO thick here. I couldn't even eat the ends of my slices because they were way too hard and crusty! We also got an authentic Italian salad, which was just okay here - it came with some garlic bread, but the bread lacked garlic flavor altogether (it still was decent and tasted buttery) and I personally didn't love the slimy little anchovies. Personally, I've even found a really awesome Chicago deep dish pizza in OC that I still liked better, but I still think this place is pretty good :) read more

Boyfriend and I were looking for a quick meal before we had to head to O'Hare to catch our flight back home. Giordano's was down the street from our hotel so we decided we would make a pitstop here before picking up our luggage. We started our trip with deep dish, may as well end our trip here too! We lucked out. There are $10 lunch specials here where they give you a personal-sized, single-topping deep dish pizza with a side and a drink. Plus, it would only take like 10-15 minutes for the food to come out as opposed to the nearly 45 if we ordered away from their lunch menu. You get what you pay for. When you're paying only about $10, that's the quality of a deep dish that you're gonna get. I honestly think, for the lunch specials, they have a bunch premade and waiting in a warming oven while the other pizzas are more made-to-order. It wasn't bad, but it also wasn't the amazing deep dish I was hoping for. It's also super greasy. My sausage pizza also consisted of a sausage patty buried underneath the cheese and marinara pizza sauce, right on top of the bread crust. It was... interesting, to say the least. I had expected crumbled sausage throughout. Overall, not a bad place if you're in a hurry. But I'd like to actually try their made-to-order deep dishes before I pass final judgment. read more

I died and went to pizza heaven. I've heard all the recommendations - yadda yadda yadda - and decided to go here. The wait was crazy... About an hour, and this was around 9p. We didn't order until about 10p that night. It was so busy!!! We ordered the infamous 'stuffed' pep and mushroom pizza ($20) and a Hawaiian thin crust ($15). WOW, is all I have to say... Tourist looking for the best deep dish and I found it. I still look back at the pictures I took at my pizza and drool. Visited here in May 2013 with my boyfriend. Coming from the Great White North, he and I wanted a genuine deep dish experience and we haven't looked back since. Next time I visit Chicago, I will definitely be back to relive the tasty bliss. We sampled a few craft beers which really quenched our thirst. I remember the decor was neat. The wait time at the front was decent considering it is a hot tourist spot. We had enough time to order a pint and take a few pictures together. We ordered our pizza before we were seated which was cool - lessens the food wait time. I remember looking at the pizza and thinking I could demolish the small by myself... how wrong I was. My boyfriend and I each ate a slice and a half and were instantly in a food coma. It was so freaking delicious and filling. There must have been an entire brick of cheese on that small pizza, but no complaints here. We had plenty to take back to our hotel for late night snacking. For all of the hype that we heard throughout our stay in Chicago about Giordano's, we were pretty disappointed by the actual experience. We had a group of 5 and got seated within 20 minutes of arriving, no problem. It took about 20 more minutes for a waiter to come ask about our drinks but we brushed this off as it being a Saturday evening and the place being pretty busy. I got a Manhattan which tasted nothing like a Manhattan and very much like it was made from some pre-made mix. It wasn't very good at all so I switched to one of their signature Long Island's after and that also tasted like it was made from a mix so I just gave up on the drinks after that. The table got a deep dish to share and some small individual things. We knew the deep dish would take a while so we got wings and stuff to hold us over in the meantime. I got the Nashville hot wings and shared a garlic bread with one of my friends. The wings were not very good at all. Sauce had a good taste but the wings themselves were pretty rubbery and didn't feel fresh at all. Garlic bread had plenty of cheese on it (I'll eat anything slathered in cheese) but it was really flavorless and felt like it was just slapped together. The deep dish was okay. Not bad, not amazing. Just regular pizza. Our waiter wasn't very attentive at all and only came to get more drink orders if we managed to flag him down as he was flying past. Overall, not a great experience. I'd recommend that people go to some smaller, local places and try the deep dish. This place is a tourist trap and feels exactly like a Pizzeria Uno's, complete with the chain-feeling food and drinks. read more

This one i located along Magnificent Mile which means lots of tourists come here...which means a big crowd...which means a long wait. So, come here at a weird time or go to a different location - they have several. We usually get the Chicago Special or the Meat & More Meat. The pizza is bigger here and the "toppings" (at the bottom) and sauce go all the way to the top of the crust. The buttery crust is thick and hard so as to keep the toppings and sauce in tact. I think Giordano's is a four star restaurant in comparison to other Chicago restaurants serving up deep dish pizzas. I'm surprised that they are not rated as high compared to other pizza joints because I actually enjoyed it a lot more than say, Pizanos. Upon walking into this restaurant, I can see why people can be a bit turned off. It did seem a little gimmicky with the whole black and white tiled floors and tacky lamps that made it very touristy. What did win me over though was their deep dish pizza. I'm not a fan of deep dish in general but, I felt this place had a great crust, it was fluffy and almost bread-like and as some would mention, it was stuffed with cheese!!! This place had the best meat to cheese to sauce ratio whereas, I enjoyed Lou Malnati's but, that place seriously had an entire layer of meat at the top which, was a bit overwhelming. This is one of the premier deep dish pizza places in Chicago. The food is good but the service is quite disorganized. Pros: - very friendly server who was running around covering for too many patrons. - the deep deep dish pizza here is always very good. The last time we were here we shared a medium deep dish among four of us. We substituted the onions on half of the the special for jalapeños. In liked it both ways. Cons: This is a very disorganized place. - For example this last time, we were told 40 mins before seating but we were able to order the pizza beforehand, since that takes about 30 mins to be made. We were seated in 10 mins but then we got the food after almost an hour. - We ordered a side of garlic bread, which we didn't get for a long time and instead someone put fries on our table that we didn't order. We tried to get their attention for about 20 mins but no dice, and since we didn't get our garlic bread for a while we ate the fries while waiting. Cost to worth it ratio: 3 ($20 for small) Highlights: - Deep dish special: fresh tomatoes on too with hidden sausage, green peppers and onions within. Comes with mushrooms too but we skipped those. Working your way to the bottom you'll find a thick layer of cheese and a pastry base. If that's not enough dough, you still have the über thick crust which manages to be crispy and chewy at the same time. - Bar area: crowded section to wait in. They have some fun cocktails like the Italian screwdriver (vodka, amaretto, grapefruit and orange juice). Bring ids to the bar, as they card everyone. - Ordering process: put your name in, order your pizza at the counter, and wait for your name to be called. Streamlines the process a bit--when you sit down your pizza is not far behind. Lowlights: - A bet there are better pies. This one was good, but didn't knock my socks off. Came here with a large group of 12 people- this was my first time in Chicago and had to try the deep dish. First off, I am not a huge fan of pizza or more so that I am indifferent and don't care for pizza. Started off with a couple of appetizers- cheese bread and the bruschetta. Holy cow, the bruschetta was so tasty. The lush ripe tomatoes, marinated with the fragrant basil drizzled with olive oil and seasonings (don't forget about the fresh thickly sliced mozzarella) was to die for. With every bite of the bruschetta, you kept wanting more. Cheese bread was also just delicious. You get fluffy dough covered in melted cheese and served with a pipping hot marina sauce. We had the Giordano Classic, the meat pizza, and the veggie pizza. When the pizzas came out, I couldn't believe my eye at how deep and large the pizzas were. First bite into the veggie pizza and I could taste the bursting flavors of artichokes. It was delicious. The cheese was extra gooey and they weren't being stingy on that. My only complaint is the bottom part of the pizza - it was soggy. Since everything was sitting on top of the bottom part of the pizza, i think it was harder to get that part nicely crusted and crispy. The Giordano classic was just as delicious but the meat lovers one was a little salty for my palette. Giordano's apparently is the must stop shop for deep dish! Worst Giordanos franchise ever. They answered the phone for about 5 seconds then left me on hold for over 25 minutes. No "hey we're experiencing a lot of calls right now can you hold". Nothing, straight to hold. However, the absolute KICKER was once they FINALLY answered, I very politely stated I'd like to place an order for delivery and they immediately hung up on me. I will never be ordering from this location again. I wish i could give them 0 stars. After I finally gave up on being on hold, I went to their website hoping that would be easier. What a mistake. The website was buggy and I couldn't even make an order. You're better off going to Lou Malnatis. The crust is better and the service is admirable. My friends really loved the deep dish pizzas they ordered (a small is seriously more than enough for 2 people because the slices are so thick), and they described it as cheesy crispy crusty deliciousness, and I totally believe them. I can't eat tomatoes so I had the cheesy garlic bread and added chicken and it was pretty average, tasty but no wow factor. The problem is that we sat down a little before noon and were told it took about 45 mins to make the pizzas so we ordered appetizers to help us bridge the gap since we were hungry. The Parmesan garlic fries were really good, but we definitely needed two orders for 5 people to snack on. At the 1 hour mark we flagged down our waitress to ask about it and she reminded us it took 45 mins, so we reminded her we'd been there over an hour. She went and asked about it and there was still another 10 mins to go, which was really frustrating (especially when people who arrived after us got their food before us, which, to be fair, they could have ordered ahead but I doubt it). Anyway, we finally get our pizzas over an hour after we arrived, but they had completely forgotten my cheesy chicken bread. I had to flag the waitress down again and ask her about it, they had not even made it so I had to wait an additional 10 mins for my lunch. This meant I was finally eating my lunch an hour and a half after we arrived. No one apologized about it, she didn't come back to check and see if it had arrived (when it hadn't yet, and I had to ask her about it again), and she didn't even comment on why it had been forgotten. Even worse, our water vases were consistently empty and each time we had to ASK someone for more water, no one checked on us, and one of my friends found paper in her pizza which the manager actually did apologize for. Just a very poor customer service experience and although the pizza is good (the only reason I'm giving three instead of two stars), and I understand it's a Chicago institution, there's no way in hell I'd come back. read more

Ambiance Giordano's in Chicago has a nice industrial look and feel inside. Definitely a real nice place to eat. It's a cool place to kick back and drink a beer and have some pizza. Food Getting Chicago style pizza is one of the main reasons to eat in the foodie scenes in Chicago. Order ahead instead of waiting 45 minutes in the restaurant. The crust tastes like a pie crust to help with the deep dish taste. We ordered a half and half pizza. Half Chicago Classic -Classic Chicago style pizza. Super meaty and tasty. Half Bacon BBQ Chicken -This is topped with a ton of BBQ sauce. The bacon tasty and blends well with the pizza. Service The customer service is good. It is way more about making sure to order ahead. Chicago deep dish... no stuffed deep dish. Not the inch or two thick of bread deep dish but wonderful fresh mozzarella cheese goodness! Two pieces was all I could handle. We came on a Thursday around 4:45 so we were seated in about 5 minutes. It does take 45 minutes to cook the pizza. We ordered a sampler of the mozzarella cheese sticks, toasted ravioli, garlic bread, and mushrooms. Mushrooms were my least favorite with no seasoning but I won't let that bring my stars down. The pizza and cheese sticks alone cane rate a 5! You can even buy frozen pizza and take home with you. I was very tempted if were were leaving earlier in the day on our return home. A trip to Chicago isn't complete without a trip to one of my favorite eating places. I never go during peak dinner time or even peak lunch time. You'll wait, and you'll wait some more. Go between 1.30 and 4.30 if you can. It's the perfect time to get in, get seated and start your pizza journey down a road you'll never go down again. I've had Giordano's more times than I can count, and consider it the best deep dish in the city (sorry to Lou and Ginos fans). It was my girlfriend's first time to Chicago so we stopped here right when we checked in and hit it first. No wait, right up stairs, and right to ordering a salad and mozz bites while we wait. The salad was definitely big enough for both of us and the mozz bites were exactly what we needed to get us craving more cheese. They were cooked all the way through and had great string to the cheese, the red sauce complimented it perfectly and the ranch we got on the side was even better with them. I know the wait times can be long here. I've waited two hours when I didn't pre order and literally had nothing to do while I was here for work, tired and everything else. However, the wait right before the mad dinner rush wasn't bad at all. I had it clocked at 55 minutes, which is on the short side of things. The pizza arrives, in all it's glory. I swear angels bring it out and set it down for you, but, I might be dreaming there. As always, the crust is perfect. Light, yet firm, and the sauce is the perfect sweet red sauce gods request when they want pizza (regardless of what god you choose to worship). So much cheese it strings everywhere and is a blast to cut through. Then... the toppings. Big chunks of sausage and pepperoni mixed into the amazing mess of cheese and sauce. Every bite is better than the last... then it's the last and you're dreaming of the next time you'll wait for this pizza. I'm a Giordano's lifer, and consider there to be no comparison between this pie and Lou Malnoti's pie. Giordano's hands down, beats Lou's every day of the week, twice on Sunday and even more so on leap years. Just know what you're getting yourself into when you come to these places and don't hit during an off time, it's a pain to wait. read more

When you are in Chicago, you just have to stop in here! It is one of the best deep dish pizza places here. Every time we have people in, we take them here. Do a lot of walking the day you decide to eat here, you will want to come in hungry! When you arrive, you place your pizza order because the wait times can be up to an hour which is how long your pizza takes so it is a great system. The only reason it is not 5 stars is because the waiting space is so small and the bartender has been rude the last several times we have been here. read more
