I am a Chef. I debated between 3 and 4 stars. While the fresh pasta was barely all dented (it was tearing in some places), my dish (the papardelle) was delicious. I would have liked a little more boar and mushrooms but all in all a fantastic dish that I would be happy to reorder. The oysters were also very good. The focaccia should have been warmed. The agnolotti had issues, the knife cuts of the ingredients were incredibly irregular, and the ingredients were unevenly cooked. It was also very sweet forward. Consider adding a splash of liquor, herbs (maybe sage or thyme) or a little acidity. The dessert was incredibly disappointing. The honey overpowered the dish, the ice cream lacked depth and the puff both soggy and slightly burnt. read more

Came here for a date night because we were finally able to snag a reservation online. I highly recommend trying to make a reservation as it seemed very busy the whole time we were there. Our server was amazing and she was able to give us a really good wine recommendation. For the food, we got an appetizer with an extra order of the focaccia. The flavors of the juniper and textures of the mushrooms with the savory-ness of the parmesan and full meat of the boar was amazing. The pasta helped bring everything together. The bartender made a clover club cocktail for me and the baloney Negroni was delicious too as were what my guests got. Giulia has rather elusive reservations, so it was a bit of a surprise when we showed up to ours to a rather empty dining room - it did quickly fill up over dinner, of course, and we figured that they probably save a lot of space for walk-in customers, which is good to know for the future! Our server was extremely helpful in explaining the menu for us and provided really helpful suggestions - and generally was very attentive, efficient, and just a very nice presence around during our meal. My friend and I had a burrata to start. Overall it was fine - cream was rich and paired well with the sourdough, but felt overwhelmed by the oil that really covered the bread and veggies. For the two of us we ordered two pastas to share - the bucatini and the strozzapreti. The pasta was cooked super nicely - exactly al dente as I prefer it - and both dishes were super yummy! The bucatini had a really flavourful tomato sauce and I loved the savoury pancetta, and the strozzapreti, with a creamy pesto sauce, worked well with the almonds (a bit surprisingly) and especially with the smoky shredded cheese on top. We also ordered the lamb sausage to share, which fell a little more flat. The sausage itself not as rich as I would have expected (a bit too chewy and borderline bland), and the beans and veggies were meh at best, too. Overall a quite nice meal, and I do want to come back since their menu changes quite frequently (!), but I think I might stick to more of the pastas next time if the secondi menu stays as-is. read more

Absolutely superior Italian food. While I love the North End and have found most of its dozens of restaurants quite consistent, Giulia's, sited on an uninspiring stretch of Mass Ave in Cambridge, blows them all out of the water. This based on having ordered two dishes and having eyed two of my companion's, who had eaten there many times. I started with the warm semolina cakes with sunchokes and Parmesan. Two warm yellow cylinders of semolina (which is a yellowish wheat flour product, similar to polenta, which is made from corn), with thin sliced and baked and crispy sunchoke chips on top and Parmesan. Completely unusual and so good. For antipasti I had "nostrale", a rotating dish created based on fresh ingredients. Tonight's was a devastating pastry stuffed with Swiss chard and served on a smoky sauce crafted from andouille sausage. It was crazy. I tried two cocktails. Pushing Daisies was my favorite-gin and lemon and some interesting Italian aperitifs. Bright flavors, very cold and straight up. Nuovo sour was a work of art, pear infused rum and mixers with a layer of red wine on top. Not an easy table to get, but worth it. This is the kind of place you dream of returning to. read more

Overall, I found Giulia to be just fine. Got to try 10 dishes and out of those 10 - 3 were fantastic, 2 were fine, and the other 5 I'd skip completely. The standout dishes were the chicken liver crostini, bucatini, and brown butter zeppole. Each of these were so flavorful and distinct... the chicken liver crostini especially. I can eat 5 of those in one sitting meanwhile the bucatini was also really good (but a traditional bucatini is hard to mess up). Then the brown butter zeppole was the perfect finish to the meal. The prosciutto and potato culurgiones were fine. Not perfect but perfectly passable for what they were. As for the dishes to skip, they weren't terrible but just really underwhelming. Giulia is always a hit! Although it may be challenging to get a reservation, it is well worth it. First off, highly reccomend the warm semolina cakes - simply *chefs kiss*. I appreciate that they always have around 3 vegetarian pastas on the menu, which are always such a unique blend of flavors that you can't get elsewhere. My only qualm is that the entrees are on the smaller side, so sometimes I don't leave completely full. But, you can make up for it with some of their other apps. Overall, would reccomend! read more

My rating would have been 3.5 stars if I had that option - it's better than 3* okay, but a few things that make it not quite 4* good given the pricing. My overall impression is that Guilia uses a lot of make ahead components that are assembled quickly into dishes to serve their busy dining room. While most dishes taste good, they lack overall refinement and the pasta dishes we tried had a sameness about them with thick heavy sauces. Service was friendly and attentive. While I would not be opposed to dining at Guilia again if that's where a dining partner wanted to go, I'm in no hurry to go back. Focaccia - it was good, not great (and bread can easily be great). Terrific light & stretchy crumb, but non-crisp crust made it seem not freshly baked. Olive oil poured on top. $1 per piece Erbazonne (greens & ricotta) also didn't seem as fresh as one would expect - taste was fine, but for the size and quality it is not worth the price $17 Pastas - we tried pappardelle with wild boar $32, buttercup squash agnolotti $27, and emmer farro casarecce $29. I could not give enough praise for Guilia. Everything was amazing - the food, the service, the drinks, the atmosphere. There were 3 of us and we sat upfront in the window, which was a great location. Greeted by our server Cassie, who was one of the best servers I've had in a long time. She was very knowledgeable about the restaurant, menu, drink and wine list and so pleasant and friendly. Every time she was at our table she was so relaxed and discussed all the options, gave some recommendations and made us feel like we were her only table (and we weren't they were quite busy). We started with the warm semolina cakes - which came two/order, but Cassie said she could do 3 since we were a table of 3 - LOVE THAT. So many places don't make those types of accommodations. They were light little pillows of flavor and a great way to start the meal. Then we shared the erbazzone, which Cassie described as similar to a spanikopita. But it was better! Not quite as salty or heavy/dense. I got the bucatini All'amitriciana which was so flavorful with the big pieces of pancetta on top. My two friends got the tagliatelle and squash casconcelli. Everyone love their pasta dishes. We ended the night with two desserts because we couldn't make a decision - lemon sage gelato and chocolate hazelnut torte with roasted banana gelato and truffle. Getting a reservation here was difficult, but still glad I managed to dine here during my weekend at Boston. The food was overall very good. Some of my favorites were the semolina cake, chicken liver crostini, prosciutto di Parma (the pears are a great addition!), bucatini, pappardelle, and the squash pasta. My group and I ordered a lot of items but I am deducting one star off as I feel the service could be better for this type of establishment. Although all staffs were wearing mask, a few seemed to have an unfriendly demeanor (unsmiling - pretty much like here's your food - bye). Our server didn't seem to know how to pour a wine as well (maybe she's in training but this wasn't a big deal). Lastly I noticed a table next to us had candles to celebrate someone's birthday. I had noted that on my reservation as well but we didn't get any candles for the person in our group. When the server brought the desserts out, I had said happy birthday to the individual loudly enough for the waitress to hear it but nothing was done. I think it was a bit disappointing. The desserts weren't impressive either which was a bummer but despite these downsides, I still recommend making a stop here for the food. read more

We dined at Giulia's to celebrate our wedding anniversary. While we could not make a reservation (reservations fill up two weeks in advance), we were first in line when they opened at 5:30 p.m. which secured us a seat at the bar. We had an amazing experience! The service was impeccable with friendly and engaging bartenders who attended to us frequently; the time from ordering to dining was just right, and the dishes we ordered were exquisite (linguine with calamari in a yellow tomato sauce with Meyer lemons and capers and rigatoni e fagioli -lamb sausage, fennel, dill, borlotti beans, dried chilies, pecorino). The restaurant is intimate with a noise level that is conducive to conversation. Having opted not to have dessert, we were treated to their delicious homemade chilled Limoncello, a perfect ending to a meal that was, in our opinion, a five-star meal. Finally got a chance to try Giulia. Due to the pandemic I got the takeout option. I ordered two pasta dishes and the rotating negroni: - bucatini all'amatriciana (house-cured pancetta, tomato and pecorino) - pappardelle with wild boar (black trumpet, juniper and parmigiano) I absolutely loved the bucatini noodles. They were long, fat and soft but not mushy. The tomato based sauce itself was a little more on the salty side. The pancetta itself definitely packed a lot of flavor (and salt!). The pappardelle noodles were definitely more firm compared to the bucatini. The wild boar was cooked to perfection. Each bite was delicate. This dish was more muted than the former, but my preference of the two. The rotating negroni had rhubarb in it and came in a cute glass bottle. The drink itself was sweet and wellmixed. My absolute favorite part of the meal was probably the hunk of super soft bread that came wrapped in aluminum foil. It was a great ending to the meal just to use it to wipe up any of the leftover tomato sauce. read more

Finally got to dine at Giulia after many months of trying to reserve a spot! The vibe was a lot more casual than I expected, but the atmosphere was cozy and not too loud. We ordered the warm semolina cakes and I ordered the bucatini! The appetizer was good and the pasta was fresh and tasty. Along with the food itself, the service was friendly and timely. However, the portion size is definitely on the smaller side and I'm not sure if the prices reflect that. Also, a side note, but the restaurant is so warm inside, so it was kinda unpleasant to be sweating while dining. I proposed to my now-wife while we sat at the bar here in 2015. It was special to us then and it's special to us now. We returned last night, for the first time in a few years. The semolina cakes and the casarecce alone would have made the trip worthwhile, but the cocktails and the dessert (a chocolate bread pudding) sealed the deal. The place is great for vegetarians like us. It's cozy and homey-feeling: all of us sitting around the bar were chatting about Terry, the former Giulia bartender whom we all remember fondly and who today, it turns out, reads audiobooks for a living. Terry's successor, Cassandra, is charming and friendly and knowledgeable. There's nothing I'd change about Giulia. I hope it sticks around for many years. read more

The positives here are an overall nice atmosphere and front of house staff that are helpful and knowledgeable of the menu. The food is definitely good. Decent amount of creativity going on so it's more than basic Italian. I just wish more was done to accommodate vegan - only one pasta could be made vegan (and that was just by removing the cheese). Other dishes with cream/cheese/egg apparently could not be done with vegan substitutes. The lack of flexibility there is disappointing. Other reviewers have already mentioned the difficulty of getting reservations and I agree. We saw people lined up at 5pm for the 17-18 bar seats. read more

If you are looking for a restaurant that wants to take you money and to get you out the door as fast as they can, look no further, as this is the place. We arrived, and when our server poured our water, we asked for a cocktail, but the reply was that he would take our order when he came back. He never returns, but a new server takes our drink order and pressures us to put in our food order. We decline, saying we have not decided yet. She comes back again and wants our order. I tell her, " Can we get our drinks first?" She says, okay, but you can tell she was annoyed. We wait 15 minutes for our drinks. I had planned to drink our cocktails and order a small plate to share as we enjoyed our drinks. Then I would have ordered a bottle of wine and dinner. She explains that we cannot order in that manner as the kitchen must have the whole order at one time. Really? We all know the "soup Nazi" well; this place is the "order Nazi." Our drinks arrive, and before I take a sip, she is back with a smirk, asking for our order for the third time in 15 minutes. I should have just said, "We will pay for the drinks and go elsewhere," but I thought maybe she would pace the food properly. NOPE! She brings out our sharing plate, and then she immediately brings out the appetizer. No chance to enjoy my cocktail with the small plate. No chance to even consider a bottle of wine with dinner as the rush was on to get us served and out the door. At this point, she has ruined he experience, so whatever. Finish the rush and get us out. We took note of a table next to us. One person was seated and was waiting for the other party to join. As soon as the other person sits, the waitress asks for their order. The guy was stunned. He said I just walked in and have not looked at the menu yet. This place wants you in and out. OK, so how was the food? It was very good. Although my wife did not like her pasta dish, and did not finish it. Do you think the waitress even asked if there was something wrong? Nope! I do not need the table for 2 hours, but they should tell you in advance that they want you out in under 2 hours. For the record, they got me out in 80 minutes...bravo for them. Absolutely one of my worst dining experiences in years. One last comment? I go out of my way to praise good food and service, and I do the same for a bad restaurant experience. Lastly, I do not agree with the 3% kitchen application fee. If the employer wants to appreciate his/her employees, then pay them. Don't ask me to subsidize your wages. read more

I haven't been to Giulia since before the pandemic because it's so hard to get a reservation, but wanted to go back since my prior experiences were amazing. I ordered the semolina cakes which were fine but nothing to remember, the best was the erbazzone, but my entree was the biggest disappointment. It was the special for the night a pasta with calamari and branzino. There were soooo many capers on it that it overwhelmed all other tastes and the calamari was horribly rubbery - the equivalent of what you get at a much cheaper restaurant. I didn't even order dessert because it was so disappointing I just wanted to leave. This was my first time at Giulia, my friend reserved The Pasta Table for 13 people. This is a family style chef's tasting menu, so your dishes will not be exactly the same as mine. There is five courses, and about 3 dishes for sharing within each course and suggested for 7-12 guests. Make sure to pace yourself, the food just keeps coming! Note: you can take the leftovers home. Base price was $95. Reserve up to 6 months in advance, we reserved almost two months earlier. EXPERIENCE They sat us at the big table in the back, and we did not need to wait for everyone to arrive. The server went around the table, and asked us for our allergies and dietary preferences, and were often given substitutes to suit their personal needs! For most courses, they will bring a new set of plates and utensils. Since our party was so big, we often had 2 to 3 sets of dishes, so we did not have to reach far, or pass big plates of food around. The server will describe the dishes for each course, and will point out if there is anything certain people cannot eat. The entire meal took about 2 hours. FOOD I did my best to record each dish mentioned and do some online research to fill in the gaps (dish names mostly copied from website menu), but there are definitely some dishes that I just do not know. Sfizzi: (one each!) (5/5) chicken liver crostini with green tomato marmellata - Super savory pate spread with a jam like topping that added sweetness that made it very balanced and enjoyable. The liver flavor was not overpowering. (5/5) warm semolina cakes with sunchokes and parmigiano - I wish we could've gotten more of these! The cake was really soft, and the sauce was savory, and the crunch on top really made a well rounded bite. (5/5) salt roasted beets with spiced labne, sesame and radish - The beets had so much flavor in them! The sauce it was with, was very creamy. I really enjoyed eating this on the bread they provided. (3/5) burrata di andria with radicchio sott'olio, citrus and bresaola - It was good, I just think compared to everything else, it was pretty standard. (4/5) unknown fish crudo? - You could tell the fish was very fresh. It did not have any fishy flavor, and was very refreshing as a dish. Pasta: (4/5) buckwheat pizzoccheri (artichoke, asparagus, fontina) - (6/5) sweet potato casoncelli (black garlic, burro e salvia, ricotta salata) - These were like fun shaped raviolis, stuffed with the cheese and such. I enjoyed the sweetness of the sweet potato with the creaminess of the ricotta. I think this was my favorite dish of the night! (abstained) paccheri 'alla bolognese' (beef, pork, parmigiano) - No comment. No replacement was provided for the bolognese that I could not participate in. Secondi: (I was losing steam by this course, so the dishes were not documented so well) (5/5) unknown beef flank with sauce? - I just wish I had more room in my stomach to have eaten more! The meat was cooked really well and the sauce that went with it complimented it well. (5/5) unknown pastry? - The sauce for this was really savory and I wanted to lick the plate clean. (4/5) unknown vegetables? - This was necessary to go with all of the other heavy dishes in this course. Simple, but well executed. Dolci: (2/5) torta al limone with pistachio praline, raspberry, ricotta gelato - The lemon filling was tart for my liking, but the gelato was amazing. This is probably the only dish I didn't enjoy. (4/5) coconut rice pudding with luxardo cherries, pistachio and tangerine sherbert - The texture was really nice, and the flavors were a bit subtle. (5/5) dark chocolate cake with stracciatella gelato and candied orange - This was really chocolatey, but not overwhelming. The gelato was delicious too. The actual cake part was kind of small, but we were really full by then so it was acceptable. OVERALL This was a really unique experience, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I think the overall quality is better than most spots in the North End, even though the price per dish is quite comparable. Beautiful ambiance and an incredibly knowledgeable server. One of the owners actually came to our table to shave our white truffles and talk about the history of the restaurant, about the truffles that season, etc. As someone used to 'classic' Americanized Italian food, a working class person that tends to look down on 'fancy' stuff, this place opened my eyes a little. Every dish had some new cacophony of flavors to offer - I'll be dreaming about the tajarin for years to come. Everything we had was amazing but the pesto especially stood out. The bucatini was also 5/5, and their pistachio gelato is exactly what I look for in desserts. Not too sweet but still full of flavor. Excellent service and really lovely ambiance! It was very cold outside and we were near the door which was going to make for a long dinner but less than 15 min after we sat down it felt like they turned up the heat!! Service was excellent throughout the meal and they gave excellent suggestions. The focaccia is delicious and definitely worth it. We also really enjoyed the hamachi crudo, burrata, tagliatelle, and pappardelle. Both pasta were delicious, but pappardelle was AMAZING! The crispy duck leg was also delicious and probably would be a standout dish, but the other 4 dishes were so delicious we couldn't help but finish them. Will be back! read more

We ordered the semolina cakes, which were interesting in a muted way. The Prosciutto plate which was ok and the Burrata which was good. But this is less preparation and more plating/sourcing. I also had the Tagliatelle with mushrooms, which did not provide any noteworthy flavors and if anything felt unbalanced (too sweet with not enough salt or kick), you could not taste the mushrooms at all. It was not the elevated dish that you would expect at this price point. When you consider small quantities, big prices, hassle reserving and unspectacular dishes, it was not worth it. read more

I am pleased that the staff is being taken care of these days, so I am happy to change the two stars to four. I continue to enjoy Giulia. Honestly, I thought about adding a fifth star, but I believe in nuance and, to me, five stars means PERFECT. And, while Giulia is GREAT, they have not quite earned the elusive fifth star. I have a few examples I could offer, but one is foremost on my mind. What's up with the stripe salt garnish on the glass? Why not put it on the rim so we can enjoy it? Am I missing something? Whose idea was this? I asked my server and she seemed to agree with me, but she did not identify the avant-garde for the sake of being avant-garde miscreant. What's next? A negroni served without Campari, or a Manhattan with a cantaloupe garnish? Don't be different just to be different; have a good reason for it! ORIGINAL REVIEW: This is a place I have enjoyed for almost 5 years now. My partner and I have celebrated birthdays, anniversaries, etc. here. The food is great. The food servers and bar staff are as good as it gets. It is easily the best Italian restaurant experience outside of Italy, at least that I've been to. But it's awful that I have to look at the weather report before going INSIDE here. If it's north of 80 degrees, this place is disgusting. A few times they've had ACs going but quite often the AC is either broken or barely working at all. The year is 2021. I do not know much about air conditioning but I know enough to know that there has to be a way to fix the AC once and for all. A week or so ago, I felt so bad for the staff there. My spouse and I, and the table next to us, were asking the servers what the deal with the AC was. Their responses were careful and diplomatic but sweat was dripping down their faces. They were getting us extra water and cups of ice without us even asking for them. What gives?? Do the owners rent? If so, talk to the landlord. YOU ARE GUILIA! Or do the owners own the building? I have no idea. But, if so, that's even worse. You are putting your staff through terrible conditions to save a few dollars. Where else are you cutting costs? Why risk your reputation? Get it together. Until you fix the AC, we aren't stepping foot inside. And to the amazing staff: go somewhere you are appreciated. To the owners: shame on you. read more
