Dr. Helen is great. We've been going to her for 6 years now with our children. We always get great results and the kids have fun too.

i'll have to give them a 2 star. this is for the fact they overcharge a lot. glasses and contacts are double or more than the cost of outside places, i get they have to make money somehow but that is insane and the fact that they charge separately for lenses like scratch, blue light, etc is crazy. i went to costco and everything is included first of all the pricing is so much more reasonable. keep in mind costco price is without insurance and at this optometry it is with insurance which is even crazier. they also push extra screenings on you so you have to pay them and they don't tell you that it is optional or not needed. additionally, exam here is not the best, they get your prescription wrong multiple times!! and you have to wait a very long time to get seen by doctor but you are in the chair for less than 10. not professional, would not come back read more

I don't understand these people. This is just beyond me. Over the years, we have bought numerous pairs of glasses for my son and myself here. We have given them business well in excess of $10,000. Now my son needed to get prescription safety glasses - this shop doesn't carry them so you have to order them online. Yesterday, he stopped by to measure his inter-pupil distance (IPD) ... and they refused ?!? Today, I texted them twice to ask for the IPD number they have measured when we last bought glasses from them ... and they simply ignored me. This is unbelievable. I will surely take my business elsewhere next time, and you should too. read more

Office was clean and not too loud. The doctor looked over my records and actually listened to what I had to say. Gave me a few suggestions and followed up with more questions which made me feel they were being thorough. Wait time wasn't bad and staff seemed focused. read more

Felt a bit scammed here: 1. Was looking to transfer Ortho-K providers to Global Eyecare Optometry. After numerous email threads, I came in for an initial confirmation that they can take on my Ortho-K Transfer. I was quoted about $300 for one eye, and told to come back in 2-3 months to maintain my 1 year schedule of new contact renewal. 2. 2-3 months later, I come back, do the eye exam, am told everything will be fine, and was charged $335 for my Ortho-K transfer and everything (new lens, etc.) 3. Fast forward 2-3 weeks, I am told the doctor recommends that I start from scratch....and I will owe an additional $1200 to do this. They offered me a refund, but didn't even provide a full $335 refund. They charged a $35 doctor fee for something that I would not have incurred should I have known this would be the original result. Extremely unprofessional to lead on your customer on something that you can do, and incurring a cost they did not need to should you have been upfront with them from the beginning. I am disappointed in the service I received here. read more

I've been a patient here for about 8 years now, and I've seen both Dr. Melissa Lau and Dr. Helen Cheng at this location. However, I'm choosing to write a review now in light of all the wonderful precautions they have taken during the COVID-19 pandemic, and as a healthcare provider and small business owner myself, I think businesses like these can really use our support during these financially hard times. I usually go for a routine visit despite having LASIK done 4 years ago, but I've also been for two emergency visits. They always respond quickly and promptly, which was very much appreciated in my emergency situations. Since the pandemic has started, it's only ever been just me and the staff in the office during my appointment time. I never had to cross paths with another patient. They cleaned and disinfected all equipment right in front of me, and face masks are required at all times. They also took my temperature upon entry, and I was asked to proceed straight to the sink to wash my hands with soap prior to starting. Their forms are all electronic, so I don't have to worry about sharing pens/papers/clipboards with anyone. I love their texting feature for appointment reminders and forms also. I came for my appointment during my lunch hour so it was a tight schedule for me, but everyone was super mindful of getting me seen on time and back to work on time. I want to end with a huge THANK YOU to you guys for being open during the pandemic and for providing essential care in a very safe environment. I was the only white guy on the block, so I was hoping they had frames that fit my freakishly round eyeballs. Five months later, I can't look down without the glasses slipping... choose wisely. And, as expected, buying frames and lenses was like the final part of buying a car. You want your lenses thinner? Lighter? Darker? More focused? Higher impact? Lower fat? Scratch protection? Been an annual customer for several years-- they keep their office nice, tidy, and professional. The doctor and staff present are ready and willing to assist you face-to-face and the appointment/wait times at the office are quick. Nice looking one-way mirror which immediately grants a star. A lot of glasses to look at even if you don't wear glasses. Sometimes the tv plays some very... interesting channels. Doctor and some staff are also fluent in mandarin and they have a good taste in decor. The bathroom they have leads an individual to question whether they lack the same arrangement at home. I've been going to Dr. Helen Cheng at her San Jose and Pleasanton offices for many years now but wanted to leave an updated review. The team at their San Jose office (Donna, Nancy, Dr. Juang) is always super friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. I could not be happier with my new Tom Ford glasses! My prescription is really, really bad but Global Eyecare managed to make me want to wear glasses again thanks to these glasses. I've had glasses made at a different office where the lenses was completely off (they'd make my eyesight warped and made me feel dizzy, but I've never had that problem here). Dr. Cheng also has a great selection of brands and styles for glasses/sunglasses, and their turnaround time is very quick. Doctor Melissa Lau is a really good doctor. She is caring and attentive. You never feel rushed. That's my kind of doctor.

Excellent service! I had an eye injury and was looking for an optometrist in the area who could see me right away. A friend referred me to Dr. Cheng, so I called up the office this very morning. They haven't even had their official opening, and Dr. Cheng was in a seminar for much of the day, but due to the nature of my request, she and her staff were extremely accommodating and scheduled me for an appointment the same afternoon. I can't say how glad and relieved I was that she was able to see me. Dr. Cheng asked plenty of questions, both regarding the incident, and kept the conversation going on a personal level as well. She was so friendly and easy to talk to. Thankfully, the retina pictures were able to confirm my injury and Dr Cheng was very thorough with the exam. As my previous optometrist is getting close to retirement, Dr Cheng was a great alternative, and being only a few blocks away (in the 85*C bakery plaza) is a total bonus. read more

I 've been here three times and their admins/sales folks are always super pushy about glasses and adding whole bunch of extra stuff to the lenses. Which is fine as I have no problem saying 'no' and I do like (at least used to) their doctors. However, this past experience was bit shady. Let me try to keep this simple as possible... I went into get my eye exam and to order some contacts. They wanted me to try couple of new lenses for best fit. They were out of stock on one of the lenses, and told me that they will call me when they have those available for me to try. Couple days later, they called me in and gave me couple different pairs to try for few days. After I've decided on the pair I liked, I called to order about a week later. They told me I can get six boxes (daily use) and my insurance will cover all but $20. So I paid the 20 and was told they will let me know once the contacts are ready for pickup. 10 minutes later, they called back and told me that they made some kind of mistake and I would need to pay $60 extra for the six boxes ($80 total). I asked them what it would cost if I did only four boxes. They told me four boxes would be fully covered under the insurance. So I asked them to change my order to four boxes and refund me the $20. They told me I would have to come in for the refund and I can do that when I pickup my lenses. When I picked up my lenses I asked them to refund my $20. They told me because of some kind of insurance issue they used that $20 to cover that cost. I asked them to explain it to me. It turns out they billed my insurance early, without the lenses and just for the exam. And, because of that insurance only covered 60 bucks of the exam cost. They used that $20 to cover the balance. What they should have done was waited until I was ready to order my lenses to bill my insurance, or adjust the insurance billing accordingly. Especially because they were out of stock on the lenses and I didn't get the samples to try until later. Either they were too lazy or they're being shady with their business practices. In any case, I won't be recommending this place to anyone and I will be looking for a new optometrist. If you are current customer, be careful and look at your receipt closely. $20 is really just $20, but what bothers me more is the feeling of being scammed. I did talk to the admin on the phone later but her words were "we are really busy right now. I will have the manager give you a call"... in a tone I don't really appreciate being talked to... she did tell me that her manager will give me a call by end of business hour, but of course, nothing... sigh read more

Not only did I have the most thorough eye test, ever. Dr Cheng was awesome- very friendly, explained everything clearly, and the whole experience was fun! I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place to anyone looking for a professional, friendly and thorough service. Staff in the office were very friendly and helpful too. They have glasses for sale on the premises too, which seem competitively priced- they just didn't have my preferred brand. Dr. Cheng is an awesome optometrist. Even if you haven't been a long time patient, she takes the time to remember you and makes you feel right at home every single visit. So awesome that it even feels like we've been friends in another time! haha. She is extremely knowledgeable, detailed, professional, and genuinely cares about what is best for my eyes. Staff has extremely been accommodating to my change of mind in contacts. Even though some miscommunication occurred here and there, they make it a point to try their best to provide you with whatever you may need. The only downside to the office is the visit hours like if you need early morning appointments etc, they unfortunately can't accommodate in that department. I've been coming here for years, starting when I was in high school, and I've had amazing experiences since. Dr. Helen Cheng is not only really good at what she does, she also makes every visit enjoyable. She actually cares to talk to you and make a connection, which is why after a while I started to look forward to my appointments with her! She'll gladly meet with me multiple times and adjust my contacts just as many times until I'm happy, something my previous doctors were reluctant to do. She is an amazing optometrist who makes you feel comfortable during your visit and takes her time to give you a thorough eye exam. My fiance also got his eyes checked and needed to get contacts. I've been with Dr. Cheng since she opened her Pleasanton office a few years back and when she told me about her new office in San Jose I was thrilled because it was that much closer to my home. The office itself is bright, open, and welcoming. The staff is very attentive to customers in their store and will offer their assistance or be there available when you have a question. In this age of technology, Dr. Cheng is right alongside with it. She has the latest in Optical technology to provide the most accurate readings AND can provide manual testing for a second opinion. She is very attentive to your eye health and her office offers retinal scans (for an additional fee, maybe your insurance will cover it) if you want to keep a record of your eye health over the years of being with her. I was fitted for contacts and she provided lots of options for me to try. I walked away with two different pairs of lenses (one for astigmatism correction and one without) to see if I preferred one over the other after prolonged use. I informed her of which one I preferred after testing each out for a few days and she noted my preference in my records. [TL;DR] Great optometrist, cares for your eye health, new technology, retinal scans, provides excellent service, and as a bonus speaks English and Mandarin. read more
