I'm gonna add Gnocco to my list of favorite Italian restaurants in NY! I love the gnocchi & the pizza, they were simple but excellent!!! Everything is homemade, and I particularly enjoyed their brick oven thin crust pizza! Personally I liked it more than Grimaldi's, it's one of the best pizze I've had in NY so far. I brought my visiting friends from Italy and they also approved the quality of food here. The nice Italian manager from Milano gave us free glasses of prosecco to welcome us, which was a nice gesture. The ambiance is hip and romantic, and it's a lovely place for a group dinner. However, there are two things I didn't like about this place: 1) They only accept cash and Amex 2) octopus calpaccio - Skip this! Not very flavorful. I'll definitely go back! read more

We came here for brunch on a Sunday and made a reservation. It was obviously very popular as they ran out of outdoor seating quickly and the indoor was filling up too. We opted for sidewalk seating but they also had a garden in the back which I would still consider indoor as it didn't seem to have any open windows. The service was very good, our servers were polite and everything came out quickly enough. It was also nice that the menus were on iPads with pictures of all the dishes. As for the food, it was pretty good Italian. We started by sharing the Gnocco which was a little disappointing. The prosciutto it came with was pretty good, but the salami wasn't great quality and the Gnocco itself wasn't authentic, it was very crunchy and not as pillowy as it should have been. We also tried the Quattro formaggi and the tartufata pizza, which were both good. The crust was too thin for my taste but that's just my preference. Finally, we had the fusilli piccanti, which were cooked perfectly al dente and delicious. The price was fair for such a popular Italian restaurant in the East village. The owner tries to cheat the customers by charging an extra fee for paying with the credit card. I am sure most people do not notice. I did notice by accident upon being confronted, his explanation was that it is written in small print on the bottom of the menu (not noticed in normal times, let alone when viewed on their phone screen), as if somehow the fact he has somewhere, is the same as if the unaware customers agreed to it. He absolutely refused to take it off, with his main argument being that the he had put there a while earlier, and not just before I visited. It is basically a scam ripping off a large percentage of his customers. The attitude seems to be consistent with the below review by Christina D. The owner is trying to scam you. Avoid the place - there are plenty of other Italian restaurants within 2-3 blocks, that operate as proper NY businesses. read more

Gnocco was truly a fabulous find. I had come across its positive reviews while researching similar casual Italian restaurants in the East Village and added it to my wish list. When a friend suggested a lesser quality competitor in the area, I convinced him to relocate our dinner to Gnocco instead. When I arrived at the restaurant, I was a bit put off by the grungy pizza parlor-style entrance, but then I continued into the dining room and was pleasantly surprised. The cold weather prevented us from enjoying their charming garden, but the intimate interior was just as delightful. The rustic brick walls, candlelit tables, and authentic Italian staff transported us to a European trattoria. We settled into our small table, and our hands immediately reached for the extensive wine list. I started with the Pinot Biano from the Trentino Alto Adige region. Each smooth sip of this 100% Pinot Bianco grape varietal contained the perfect balance of fruit and acidity. I later enjoyed an affordable glass of the pure Greco grape Ciro Bianco from the Calabria region. Each refreshingly sweet sip managed to tantalize every segment of my palatte. While I stuck to glasses of white, my companion opted to take the red route. His Cabernet Sauvignon from the Lombardia region was full-bodied and certainly smokier than most cabs. However, its tannins were well-balanced and subtle, making it extremely smooth. His subsequent Pinot Nero was definitely a sweeter and lighter beverage than his first glass, but it still provided a fantastic level of flavor. Sadly, the bread that accompanied our wine was a bit stale, but the olive and balsamic dipping oils helped a bit. Regardless, the rest of our meal was spectacular. We started by sharing the house specialty Gnocco. This interesting dish consisted of fried pillows of dough that were similar to zepolis, but were airy and hollow on the inside. A platter of lean Northern Italian cold cuts, such as proscuitto and hard salami, was included and was to be used as a stuffing for the dough. The unique starter was fun to assemble, share, and devour. Our enjoyable meal continued into our entree courses. My Tubetti Integrali con Ceci e Pancetta was unbelievable. This hefty portion of homemade whole wheat pasta rings was cooked to a perfect al dente. The earthy dish was enhanced by the perfect dose of a spicy sauce made from cherry tomatoes, chick peas, and smoked Italian bacon. Though I tried to eliminate the fatty pig strips to save calories, the kitchen was unable to fulfill my request. However, I am glad that the situation played out in that fashion, because the added smokiness really enhanced the flavor. My friend ordered the Spinach and Ricotta Ravioli special. The delicate dumplings were tenderly cooked and full of sweet cheese and earthy spinach. They simply screamed homemade. The plump noodle pillows were displayed in a butter and white wine sauce that was extremely light, acting as a mere drizzle on the plate. Shavings of fresh hard Parmesan cheese were draped across the entree for added flavor. Our Gnocco experience was truly first-rate. The prices, quality, authenticity, and atmosphere were all spectacularly perfect and set the restaurant a step ahead of all the other casual Italian eateries in the neighborhood. read more

I had my eye on this place for a while, finally decided to check it out with a girlfriend. Tuesday night 6:30 pm we were the ONLY customers. Very pretty space, dim lighting wood tables... The whole romantic ambience with outdoor seating available. Gnocco- as good as everyone says... But it's fried dough and meat.... Anyone can accomplish this Octopus- very light and refreshing. Would order this again. Split the bufalina pizza and a spinach salad. Pizza was good but after it sat for a bit it got extremely soggy which was disappointing. Service started off attentive and faded towards the end, great bus boy though. I walked by today in hopes of having some food and drinks. As I approached the host stand, I asked for a menu but both servers standing there looked at me like I had 10 heads. I asked them why they were staring and if I could see a menu. The female server grabbed a code menu-thing and put it in front of me, not explaining what it was. I was confused and haven't encountered this yet, so had no idea what was going on. Eventually, the male server took out an iPad and showed the menu to me. Just then, two white men were greeted enthusiastically by the same female server and was given the code menus without asking. She asked the male server where she should seat the white male guests, and the male server said "anywhere". I was ready to be seated, but the server made me wait, even though no one was sitting at the tables and he had just said that the white men could sit anywhere. At that point, I (a black woman) felt uncomfortable and made it known. I decided to go elsewhere, but was still disturbed by the whole incident. I decided to return to get the information of the manager or owner. The male server was exceptionally rude and kept asking if I was giving him attitude. I told him that I wanted the owner or manager's info, and to stop escalating the situation. Eventually, I went to talk to the owner, who was either pretending to be ignorant of what I was saying, had issues with the English language or really was clueless. Either way, it was super frustrating attempting to explain to him why I was upset. I ended up leaving after being gaslit by the owner and the servers who pretty much made it seem as though I got it wrong and that it was a "covid" issue, which was interesting, because the white men seemed to be immune to any and all covid considerations. Gnocco organized a wonderful buffet for a group of 25 teachers today. Our organization seeks to raise the respect of teachers and to given them the nourishment they need--intellectual and literal. The staff at Gnocco made our midday break an excellent one. The food was terrific--from beautiful salads to porcini risotto to chocolate mousse cake--and the staff were terrific. We had the garden to ourselves. 25 NYC teachers see the world a bit differently this evening because the good ideas raised in day of meetings were matched by the great experience at lunch. I was visiting from out of town and came here on recommendation from my host and I'm so glad I did. The food is delicious, the atmosphere is calm and quiet, and the owners are incredibly nice and gave me recommendations on the menu. I even came back a second time during my short trip because I wanted to try more menu items! I've read some of the other reviews here about poor service and that was not my experience, although both times I came I was not in a hurry and so might not've noticed any long wait times, etc. On the contrary it felt nice not to be rushed. If you need a quick bite this might not be your place, but if you can devote a bit of time to a lovely Italian meal in a quiet neighborhood, it's well worth it. read more

Dined at Gnocco with a party of 8 at 8pm on a Friday evening. We all had high expectations from looking at the pastas on yelp and Instagram so we were super eager to try it out!! Unfortunately, there were a few mishaps during our meal. Everyone ordered various apps to start, which all came out in a reasonable amount of time. I tried the octopus carpaccio and polpette, which were both delicious. Others at the table tried the signature gnocco as well as burrata; both looked awesome!! Dinner began to take a downward spiral when the entrees were brought out. I ordered the gnocchi, which looked incredible but winded up being very very bland. It was better once I added salt and crushed red pepper, but neither of those should have been necessary from the start. A few gals ordered the Gorgonzola and walnut pasta, which wasn't served hot (clearly was sitting out for a while or not cooked correctly). The flavor was spot on so it is a shame these dishes were served cold. And the worst for last...one friend's entree (chicken with potatoes and carrots) was served at least 30 min later than everyone else's. At this time, everyone was clearly finished eating so she had to get her dish boxed up and go home hungry. The waiter proceeded to explain how this wasn't his fault when he should have taken responsibility for the mishap. Whether it was an issue in the kitchen or if he forgot to place the order, he shouldn't have said it was out of his control. The dish was on the house as well as a glass of wine, but this shouldn't have happened in the first place. I've been here twice and while the food is delicious the service is spotty. The last time we came we had a party of six so I got to taste a lot of my friend's dishes. I ordered the whole wheat macherroni with prosciutto which was creamy, decadent, delicious. My friend got the pesto seafood dish which was amazing and her pasta was cooked to a perfect al dente, the pesto was super tasty but not overpowering, and the seafood was tasty and fresh. This is prob the strongest dish and what I would order if I ever came back. My other friend had the beef carpaccio which was amazing, the neat was so fresh and the olive oil they put on it was astoundingly good. Another friend had the gnocchi, which was ok (a little too soft), and another the tuna salad which I didn't try but looked good. The service was however extremely spotty. We had to flag our waiter down anytime we needed anything, they ran out of wine glasses and gave us 1/2 at first then then other 1/2 like 10 or 15 minutes later (and it was like 1/3 full in the restaurant); in short, they were nice but just a bit of a mess. Overall though it was a pretty reasonable price and very tasty food. The ambience is a little lacking, but the outdoor seating is ok (I dined there around a year ago and remember it being kind of cute). I was really enjoying it but then I began to realize how dense the potato pillows were. My stomach began to protest halfway through the meal from how full it was feeling. The ambience here is a real draw. They have a beautiful enclosed patio with interesting plants, and a sun roof. The burrata was excellent, both pesto and truffle. I didn't enjoy my entree as much, the carbonara pasta, due to the sauce being bland, but I would come back to try something different. They have a bottomless brunch deal with a variety of drink options. I felt it was reasonably priced as well. Yum, yum gimme some more! I had a delicious time here... I loved just about everything I ate but the zeppole dish that was made from lobster and oyster (I just didn't like the oyster part). The pizza was excellent and full of flavor but I didn't like how the middle of the pizza was kind of soggy. Otherwise, I loved the crust and the toppings and cheese all tasted fresh. The pasta was also delicious... fresh, homemade, and with a delicate flavor. Definitely try the gnocco which is a light fried dough served with three different types of meat and the mozzerella served with black truffles and toasted bread. Gnocco provides a cozy atmosphere and authentic Italian cuisine. We ordered a special appetizer which consisted of figs wrapped in prosciutto and stuffed with ricotta cheese. It was amazing. The prosciutto was one of the best I have had and not too salty. I was craving pizza so we went with two pizzas: the tomato/basil/mozzarella and vegetariana, which had eggplant and artichokes. Both were packed with fresh ingredients and full of delicious flavors. I would recommend Gnocco as a great date spot or even just a night with friends. More like a 3.5. The pizzas here are VERY thin - and not in a good way. Slices will not hold up.. they will literally fall apart as you pick it up and eat it. Since Em was away for my "real" birthday, she promised to make up for it with a celebratory meal upon her return. And, in staying true to her word, we met for dinner at Gnocco just three days after I turned 30. Perhaps it was the fact that Gnocco is situated across the street from Tompkins Square Park that inspired Em and I to be seated in the restaurant's hidden back garden. We certainly were not intimidated by that particular evening's smoldering heat, at least not until we sat down. As beads of sweat rolled down our extremities, Em and I fell prey to the famous saying, "if you can't take the heat, get your ass out the kitchen." Within minutes of throwing a humidity-induced hissy fit, we were whisked away to a brand new two-top table. Indoors. Emily and I each began our meal with a glass of wine as we perused Gnocco's dinner menu. Since so many of the offerings caught our attention, we chose to split various appetizer and entree plates. Moments after placing our order in its entirety, we received a basket of shamefully-dry bread. Thankfully, we did not have to wait too long for our appetizers to arrive. Our two appetizers arrived simultaneously: *Gnocco (the restaurant's namesake): we couldn't have dinner at Gnocco and not order its namesake appetizer - plus, who can say "no" to fried dough and Italian cold cuts? Not I. If any of you are familiar with Indian poori, or a Mexican sopapilla, then you're getting warm. "Gnocco fritto" shares the same concept (diamond-shaped dough that is deep fried - resulting in a hollow and pillowy puff) however, unlike the traditionally sweet sopapilla, this version is savory. Served alongside (the fried dough) is a plate of thinly-sliced cold cuts - such as salami and prosciutto - which will eventually be stuffed inside of the warm gnocco. *Fried artichoke hearts: this particular appetizer was the special of the evening, therefore it was not listed on the menu. A large plate was topped with a pile of warm, crispy, and hefty sliced-artichoke hearts that were suffocating under two slices of tepid white cheese. The delicate, passive flavors of the 'chokes were offensively overpowered by the accompanying dipping sauce that was laced with pungent black peppercorns. Post-appetizers, Em and I didn't have to wait long for our pasta/entree courses to arrive. We split the following three plates: *Mezzi Rigatoni Con Salsiccia E Broccoli / rigatoni pasta with spicy Italian sausage and broccoli rabe *Gnocchi Al Pomodoro E Mozzarella Di Bufala / homemade potato gnocchi with tomato sauce, buffalo mozzarella and basil *Tagliatelle Al Ragu con Piselli / home made tagliatelle pasta with veal ragu and green peas Em and I found the pastas rather mediocre, as each dish contained at least one faux-pas: 1. Mezzi Rigatoni Con Salsiccia E Broccoli: the sausage was too gristly 2. Gnocchi Al Pomodoro E Mozzarella Di Bufala: while I appreciated the fact that the gnocchi were homemade, their texture was doughy. Furthermore, the tomato sauce tasted like undiluted Campbell's Condensed Tomato Soup - awkwardly sweet and runny. 3. My wife and I were wandering the East Village last night after attending a jazz concert when we stumbled upon this bustling restaurant. While looking at the menu posted outside, one of the servers entreated us in gregariously -- we took a table in the "garden" section alongside a few other couples and a large 40th birthday gathering. The next two hours became the unexpected highlight of our evening before battling NJT delays back to Central New Jersey. Our server, Christopher, immediately brought several bottles of wine to our table and invited us to choose our fancy via samplings. My wife and I were impressed that the recommendations were made based on what we preferred, NOT what was being sold at premium prices. We selected a bottle of the Tomaresca blend, which we had never had before. It is now on my shopping list for our next night at home. We were impressed at the wide selection of wines, all Italian varieties. We began with a starter of shaved black truffle fries, which were savory and delicious. This truffle-forward indulgence was awesome! For the entrees, we shared the Gnocchetti al Pomodoro e Mozzarella. It was fantastic with a light and fresh tomato sauce infused with fragrant and intense notes of basil. The gnocchi itself was surprisingly light and delicious. We also shared a pizza, the Tartufata. This extremely thin crust pizza was topped with mushrooms, truffle, and speck. The flavor was intense and sophisticated and we found ourselves fighting over the last slice. Aside from delicious food, two other components of our impromptu late dinner stood out: pricing and service. The former was reasonable especially given the high quality of the food and the Neighnorhood. The latter was stellar: Christopher provided white glove service and made fantastic recommendations. When we ran out of steam for desert (sadly), Christopher entreated us to an after-dinner treat of limoncello. We will be returning again, especially as the light and fresh cuisine is a relief from the heavy cheese laden Italian food we have become accustomed to in Jersey. read more

Wonderful good, outstanding service and lovely venue. Admittedly only had the gnocchi and the gnocco (no meat - just the bread). The chef greeted us at the door and was very personable and treated my son like royalty! Delivered to him the pink gnocchi with the Gorgonzola and tomato sauces. My son wolfed down the pink (and he is a very picky eater) and then when we ordered more, the chef also brought out the spinach and squash versions! He benefit here is I can comment on 3 gnocchis! Pink - more firm (beet coloring) and a bit more flavor than the other two Green less firm, and the spinach flavor is very noticeable. We stopped by at around 8 on a Thursday night. The Pinot Noir was delightfully fruity and light, but the real star of the show was the mushroom pizza. The crust was delicate but the sauce was wonderfully smooth, buttery and savory with the flavor of the mushrooms. The almond cookies were good but tasted strongly like eggs. The place was a little noisy and the food was slow to come out, but it was well worth the wait! The dessert wine was an excellent treat to end the night! Multiple times the drinks came out wrong but that being said the servers are quick to put it right. Starters are great and def recommend the Gnocco with meats or the burrata. Ok, so yes I love this place. Came here with my 2 sisters for my little sister's birthday. We were in the West Village, but we Yelped it and got in a cab. Soo glad we did. This place is very rustic on the inside, and very open and comfy. There are tables in the front that appear like you are eating outside given the entire front of the restaurant was open to the outside. We sat in the back on the patio. What a beautiful night to be out on a patio. It did not feel like we were in NYC, I felt like we were in a beautiful European cafe on a lovely summer night. The host and our waiter were absolutely wonderful.They were so attentive and soo friendly. We joked and laughed throughout the night. My sisters and I sat and chatted after eating and paying without feeling rushed to leave. The food. So I had the bufalina pizza which is basically a Margherita pizza but with buffalo mozzarella. This restaurant has changed a lot in the past few months (for the better)! It is a bit of a hidden gem close in East Village and makes you feel like you've been instantly transported to Italy. Reservations are basically required, especially for parties over 2 people. Food: Ask for the specials! I have tried about everything on the menu, appetizers are delicious and the pasta selection is broad. You are safe to try anything and have a solid meal. Ambience: Depending on where you're seated, the small rooms can get loud with the music playing in the background. If you are lucky enough to be seated in the courtyard, the noise level is lower and you have a prettier view. The staff is knowledgable and will always recommend a great bottle of wine. The restaurant now offers iPad menus that show images of each appetizer and entree (for those of you who need to use your flashlight to read menus in dark restaurants). The best Italian food and drinks that I ever took in my entire life. I tried fillet mignon and was absolutely perfect with the truffle and cheese sauce on top for drinks I got Negroni and was absolutely perfect. The service was great, super kind. A nice, modern Italian restaurant in the East Village. We went there on a Saturday night and the place was packed. The ambiance of the entire restaurant is nice and the staff are pretty friendly as well. Ordering is easy thanks to their menu. Our waitress gave us an iPad that had a picture and description of each dish, which was really cool. The food and drinks are reasonably priced but sadly nothing to write home about. I had the arancini di Riso and gnocchi and thought they were pretty average. Still, for what you're paying it's not bad. If you're in the area looking for a nice place to grab dinner, I recommend dropping by for a bite. read more

Brought a few out-of-town friends here for a last minute dinner on Saturday night simply because we were in the area waiting for Rue B's jazz to start. Big mistake. The service was super slow (our appetizers were delivered before our bottle of wine arrived). The Arancini di Riso with truffle sauce: GREAT, Burrata: Pretty good, Gnocchetti al Pomodoro e Mozzarella: Great, but not $20 great. Mezzi Rigatoni con Salsiccia e Crema di Broccoli Rabe: UGH. The waiter recommended this dish and it was so bad, we didn't even finish it. I was embarrassed that I'd brought my LA friends here (where they have tons of awesome restaurants). New York has WAY better Italian spots for a lot less money and way better service. read more
