His response was immediately rude and impatient: "I already gave you guys 10 spoons." I calmly explained that the kids had used the spoons for their ice cream and that we needed additional spoons for the birthday cake. Instead of simply bringing a few spoons--which is literally basic customer service--he suddenly raised his voice at me and rudely said, "Reuse it then!" Then he turned his back and walked away. Excuse me?! What kind of service is this supposed to be? We were paying customers celebrating a special occasion, not asking for something unreasonable. Asking for a few extra spoons should not result in being yelled at and treated like we were a problem. His attitude was unbelievably rude, disrespectful, and completely unacceptable. If you hate serving customers so much, then you should not be standing there acting like a boss behind the cashier and taking your frustration out on paying customers. The most ridiculous part is that we still left over $100 in tips because the food is still good. But good food is not enough to make up for disgusting customer service and being treated with such disrespect. After supporting this restaurant for nearly 10 years, this is how we were treated.

The small dishes were all salty - which authentic Japanese should be, and you might want more rice to go with it. One let-down was rice. It was hard and dry, and tasted like rice from the day before that had been left in a rice jar overnight, and made me wonder how their sushi would be with this rice. It also had furikake on it, which cheapened it. Rice is immensely important for Japanese meal and this was very disappointing. Also this is nitpicking but the placement of dishes felt weird. In standard Japanese way, rice should be front left, miso soup front right, and all the other things in the back. But this is California so I guess I should shut up on this issue.

It was creamy and delicate, and somehow the fig reminded me of grilled eggplant--in a surprisingly good way. The pressed saba sushi was excellent too, especially with the ginger mixed into the rice giving it a nice kick. The cold chawanmushi was perfect for summer, with sweet crab on top. The uni and ikura Inaniwa udon was another standout. The marinated ikura had a very distinct flavor that I really enjoyed. Then came the nigiri, and honestly, every piece seemed to get better and better. We had kohada, ishigarei, kinmedai, aji, shima aji, chutoro, kanpachi, and tachiuo. Every single one was excellent. The uni and ikura over rice featured bafun uni from Hokkaido, so of course that was amazing. Dessert was amazake gelato with peach compote, which was light and refreshing after such a long meal. One thing I especially liked was the atmosphere behind the counter.
