Came by for lunch the other day and it was a mediocre experience. Haru is a Japanese style restaurant owned by Chinese, based upon their health inspection report. Seems like this restaurant is a part of a restaurant group with other locations around the Bay. The menu featured typos such as some items were "fired" while other dishes featured "veggie." The receipt even called the restaurant a "japanese" (as a non-proper noun) restaurant. The website already expired and hours of operations were not posted on the window. Opted for the gozen set which reminded me of Business class dining on ANA or JAL. Opted for the Wagyu and Unagi. The Wagyu was excellent, cooked to a perfect medium rare and featured salt and pepper for seasoning. The Unagi Don was a letdown, especially the rice. The rice was very dry, much worse than the rice I typically get a 24 hour restaurants in Tokyo... The egg omlet seemed cold and prepackaged...The unagi itself was ok. The miso soup was also ok. The couple of fried crab claws felt frozen as I tasted some freezer burn to them. The execution of the small bites and sashimi itself was excellent though. ~$75/head after tax and gratuity for lunch.

A relatively new spot in Los Altos. Decent menu options. A popular place so make sure to make reservation or be prepared to wait. Out reservation was at 7:30 and already several items were out. Friendly servers but slow service and food timing could be improved. Our table was not a big drinker and definitely felt less attentive. Might try it again to check out a few items on the list. Due to location, the price is a higher.

Let's be real, sushi can be stoopid expensive. And, in Los Altos you either have your CA rolls or $200-$300 pp omakase spot. There doesn't seem to be any in-between until now. From the team behind SF's Hinata and Sasa, Haru soft opened this week in the former Bevri space. They aim to bring upscale, high-quality sushi at a more approachable price. And, they have a full bar. They accept rezzies but I couldn't find which platform they use so we did a walk-in. F O O D * Kisu Chips w/ whiting fish (4 pc - $18) Similar to Rich Table's signature sardine chips, a filet of whiting fish is woven into a thin, crispy potato chip served with a creamy tartar sauce. * Gindara Saikyo Yaki: Miso Black Cod ($22) Rich, buttery layers with crispy, caramelized edges. Simple and done right...and a good value for the portion. * Omakase Nigiri (8 pc-$63 x2) Served in two waves, the edomae-style nigiri had a good ratio of expertly cut neta (fish) to seasoned shari (sushi rice). Rice held its shape and you can feel the individual grains. I wished the nigiri were served piece by piece but to manage volume and keep the prices affordable, I get it. * Nigiri -- Kamasu: Seared Barracuda ($7 x2) -- Ji Kimendai: Goldeneye Snapper ($8 x2) -- Amaebi: Sweet Shrimp w/ fried head ($8 x2) -- A5 Wagyu ($12 x2) * Wagyu Sando w/ miso katsu sauce ($42 x2) Tender, intensely marbled wagyu in between toasted shokupan served with a side of umami rich, tangy tonkatsu sauce. The wagyu is coated in panko and fried so you can enjoy all the various texture contrasts. S E R V I C E Friendly, attentive, and prompt. I'm very clumsy and dropped one of the menus. As I went to pick it up, one of the kind staff rushed over to bring me a new clean menu. Very thoughtful. A M B I A N C E Sleek, minimalist dining area with an open kitchen, seven tables, sushi bar, and bar seating. Overall, Haru fills a much-needed middle ground in the area, quality sushi that feels elevated without the $$$$$ fine dining omakase price tag.

Came here for lunch on Memorial day and was promptly seated. They have an extensive menu with an abundance of japanese dishes. Restaurant is very clean and I love the modern interior. Highlights: Scallop Delight makimono- the seared scallops were plump and creamy which was hoghlighted by the delicate dressing that lightly coated each scallop. King salmon belly- buttery and lightly kissed from the flames that seared each nigiri piece. Pure bliss. Wagyu katsu sandwich- the wagyu meat was decadent and just melted in each bite. The wagyu was well seasoned and did not need the sauce that was included on the side. Miso black cod- flaky, marinated well, and cooked to perfection. The sauce was velevety and balanced out the umami marinade. Everything here is delightful and I can't wait to try their other menu items.

Came here for the soft opening weekend and it was incredible! Ordered the omakase and the quality was exceptional. They have a lot more than just nigiri and sushi. I was impressed by the set meals to be honest. It had a lot of items for the price. Ambience and service are perfect as well, even if it was during a soft opening. I'd definitely recommend a try and would come back.

I came during the soft opening weekend! Made a reservation for this place. They also take walk ins. Love the interior of this place, it has a minimalist and elegant look. I ordered the hamachi truffle, shishito peppers, hama-toro and haru roll. Each dish was full of flavors! The severs were super nice and always on top of things.

Though they are in a "soft opening " I'd already call this world class sushi and more spot. The room is beautiful with elegant touches and a comfortable environment , the service helpful, connecting without being intrusive and the menu has so many interesting choices, I can't wait to go back. I put together an assortment of dishes with fun input from my server.

It's on the smaller side for a restaurant (maybe seats 30?), making it a super cute spot for date night. We opted for the 17 course omakase and it did not disappoint. The timing of each course was perfect. Even though the chef was also making nigiri for a table of 4, my husband and I never had to wait very long between each piece. One of our most memorable bites was the A5 wagyu. It's grilled on a Japanese charcoal which added a nice smokey flavor to the juicy pieces of wagyu. The kisu tempura was also very delicious and as always, the nigiri's were *chefs kiss*. Each piece of nigiri was perfectly seasoned and incredibly well balanced. If you haven't tried Hiroshi yet, you're definitely missing out. Highly recommend trying Hiroshi at least once if you like omakase. My husband and I are already looking forward to our next visit.

I ordered the Shrimp Tempura Roll and Miso soup, both to go. The order was ready within 15 minutes and before I got there. I went there on a Sunday evening around 5pm and the place was not full. They had a 2 for 1 specials and so I got 2 orders of the Shrimp Tempura Roll for the price fo one and I was shocked at how small the quantity was, you get 6 pieces with an order for $12.95, see attached photo. I was greeted when I walked in and was attended to immediately. The interior is welcoming and you walk into restaurant with the chefs preparing the sushi to the left and seating in front of them and several tables. There is no outside seating. Not only was the portion small but the shrimp part was tiny, it was mostly rice and not very tasty. The Miso Soup was hot and satisfying. It cost $2.99 You have to ask for utensils, they do not provide automatically and I appreciate that. I might give this another try if I am in the area but I would prefer to check out other sushi places and see how the quantity and prices compare.

This is very different from the cantonese clay pot rice which I am used to, but I was pleasantly surprised. The addition of dashi broth and wasabi is a must here; it pairs so well with the flavors of the eel and rice. Chashu miso pizza - the "pizza dough" is a light and crisp pastry resembling tempura batter. On top of the light batter is lots of cheese, mushrooms, pork, and miso sauce. The miso flavor here is incredibly mild, while the cheese and mushroom are the heaviest flavors in my opinion. I'm quite impressed with this pizza especially when it comes to the dough/crust. I would recommend trying this out. For a weekend meal, I highly recommend booking a reservation. Tables fill up quick and from your time of reservation, you get 90 minutes to order, eat, and leave. The cost is on the higher end, and I wouldn't go often, but the food is good enough to warrant an occasional visit.

It just happened to be today that we got to go visit one and I was pleasantly surprised. From the quality and speed of the food to the prompt service, my visit exceeded my expectations. I would say their food is 3.5 star but I rounded it up to 4 star because we got some really good service that went beyond our expectation + their dinner combo has really good portion. My husband ordered Shioyaki Saba (grilled Mackerel) + chicken karage (fried chicken, Japanese style). I had the 8 pc sashimi + beef teriyaki. We ordered two orders of tekka maki rolls, 1 kids' chicken teriyaki plate, and agedashi tofu. We thought we might need to add more food but end up we were so stuff by the end of the dinner. At first I thought the dinner combo would come in a bento tray. But no, each item was served in their own plate. The grilled Mackerel is the largest portion we have ever seen in the SF Bay Area. Husband got two filets on the plate. The bigger piece was as long as his lower arm (!). The second piece was like 75% of the bigger piece. He said the portion is like 5x more than neighborhood restaurants up in SF as one of the 2 items in a dinner combo/bento box combo. The chicken karage was like 10 pc in the bowl. He had to share with the kids. My beef teriyaki was like 2 thinly sliced steak. It's a very generous portion - except the rice. The rice is 1 scope of rice (think of Hawaiian BBQ scopes of rice). For those who watch out their rice intake/blood sugar, it's nice to keep it moderate. Oh, and the 8 pc of sashimi - they are on the thicker side - each bite is very satisfying. Oh, and the generous portion extended to the kid's chicken teriyaki plate. Basically it's the same entree plate as the grown up dinner combo, but minus the 2nd item, the soup, the salad, and probably 25% less protein (comparing to my beef teriyaki). But it's still a very generous portion for a child. From our experience, I would say skip their agadashi tofu. We ordered one and honestly it was disappointed. Their fried chicken was pretty good but the fried tofu, frankly, did not deliver. The coating was a bit off. The crunch from crushed almond (?) just did not work for me. Service, I was shocked by the attentive service. Frankly, I don't expect much in a neighborhood casual restaurant. As long as the staffs are polite, get our order right, serve us food, we would be very happy about it. But they went beyond our expectation. The sushi chef gave us the wrong roll (gave us salmon roll instead of tuna roll). The server immediately fixed it for us when I pointed it out. But my biggest surprise was the second incident - my son dropped one of his chopstick on the floor. As he picked up on the floor and before we raised our hand to ask for a new pair of chopstick, another server brought us a pair already (!) This is not a place that you would make a special trip. But I definitely think this is a lovely spot-on neighborhood gem for those who live near MV downtown. I see myself coming to this place on a weekly basis if I were still living in MV. If I ever come back again, I will definitely give their sushi rolls a try for sure!
