I've seen the accolades... Yelp's Top 100 Places to Eat in 2025. I've seen it all over IG. I had to try it of course. It's located in a plaza and it's a small, cozy spot; there were about 7 tables. I don't think they accept reservations. We went on Saturday for dinner, there were a group of about 15 to 20 and then my family. I was glad we were able to get a table for 4! The service was great! Food came out fast too. My kids had the chicken katsu with fries which they enjoyed. My husband had the sashimi platter and Philly roll, which he said was fresh and tasty. I ordered 3 sushi rolls: Dragon Roll- it had crispy tempura shrimp, avocado wrapped in sushi rice and nori seaweed; it was topped with eel sauce and sesame seeds. Shrimp Tempura Roll- which had Tempura Shrimp, Avocado, Cucumber, Tobiko, and Homemade Eel Sauce Spicy Crunchy Tuna Roll- fresh minced tuna, seaweed, rice, and I believe popped rice to make it crunchy Honestly, all delicious. I couldn't find a negative. The sushi were fresh and innovative. The menu had so many delicious options that I wanted to try all of it in one sitting, if I was a rich sumo wrestler lol. Yes, it's worth the hype and I'll be back soon!

My wife and I have been really enjoying a new found love of sushi so on a recent date night I searched for top sushi restaurants in the state and we made a drive. Glad we made a reservation because there are only maybe ten small tables and all were filled when we arrived on a Thursday evening. Food was all excellent. The best gyoza I've had and the homemade soy sauce was a nice kicker. Rolls we had were all excellent and we absolutely will be back.

I am obsessed. I see why it's a fan favorite and ranked on Yelp's Top 100 in the US. Gohan is now my #1 favorite for sushi. Like honestly in the entire country. It is on the smaller side because it's so unassuming in the middle of a strip mall. But the chefs are incredible with wonderful servers. The owner is the sweetest woman ever and she loves chatting with everyone coming in. Everything is made in house, even the soy sauce. The art and craft behind what is put on the menu is amazing. You should absolutely check them out!!!!!

Very good sushi, worth the trek. Came here because of the top 100 list entry. Plaza is very unassuming, in the middle of a shopping district. When we came, the restaurant was 15 minutes from closing. They take an hour for lunch every day, and shut down fully. They let us order to go though, so we put in our order rapidly and waited in the car. Food came out quickly, took some pics and dug in. The sushi was top notch, even if they were all to-go. The tuna was treated well, fresh and seasoned lightly. The wasabi was fresh and the ginger was punchy. The flaming torch roll was beefy and toasty, the dark angel roll was tangy, creamy and spicy. The only issue was the spicy tuna was a little mushy with little texture difference. We would've loved actually dining in and getting the full experience, but if this is the quality one gets when they are closing up just shows their commitment to their craft. It's really good sushi.

The sushi here lives up to its hype! The sushi rolls were fresh and creative. The service is good, seems like they have a lot of regulars and since it's such a small place, you'd get recognize quickly if you came a few times. There's only seating for about a max of 20 people or 5 separate tables, really small. They only serve nonalcoholic drinks and I think they are BYOB.

The sushi is good, but for the hype of top 100, no I don't think so. I had sushi at Genki and fengchop I thought it taste better. It's not horrible, but it's def not the best sushi I've eaten. The place is small and it's nice to support mom and pop shop. I also didn't know it's BYoB if I known that maybe it would have made my experience better. It was my birthday and I didn't know there's no alcohol there.

First off, to anyone that says "all sushi spots are the same" this place will prove you wrong. The standards for the quality of fish here are high and you can taste the difference. I mean just look how vibrant that salmon is. They're known for their sushi rolls and Paradise cake, Crazy Tuna roll and Tiger roll are only some of the rolls I've had but they were all amazing. The seamless blend of flavors, from the addition of citrus to their rolls to the unique sauces, you can tell a lot of care has been put into the design of each roll. I would come back just for the paradise cake though, insane blend of crunchy and soft textures. I'll admit I was a little doubtful because the same sounded gimmicky but boy was I wrong. Truly savored every bite and didn't want it to end . Service is amazing as always, super friendly and inviting. Having such a small seating area means the restaurant has kind of a homey feel, yet the food and presentation really takes you to flavor-town. Love the dichotomy of the beautifully arranged sushi and the Dragon Ball Z figurines around the restaurant. Honestly, Gohan placing in the Yelp top 20 for restaurants in the U.S. speaks for itself. If you're around the area, love sushi, and haven't gone here to eat yet, what are you doing?

Really great. I had been meaning to see what all the hype was about and decided on an impromptu team lunch one day at the office. Feedback all around was this was the best sushi ever. We tried a couple of specialty rolls including the Montage Mountain roll which has crispy rice and onions and a Flame Touch roll which had steak. Absolutely delicious. The sushi lunch and sashimi were also on the table to rave reviews. Service was so friendly and this restaurant is in such an unassuming strip mall. Love hidden gems. Can't wait to come back with my husband.

Gohan came highly recommended by many of my foodie friends. Since I'm a big fan of sushi, I had to check them out for myself. They are located in a shopping plaza with other food options and stores, Gohan can be easily missed--a gem hidden in plain sight, if you will. We were instantly greeted when we walked in and seated. The restaurant was rather small with a few sets of tables and very clean. Our server was very friendly and had a contagious smile. She cracked a few jokes that had us all laughing as we ordered. The menu was simple compared to other sushi restaurants which I liked. Since we arrived during lunch hours (Tues-Sat 11am-3pm), some of us took advantage of the lunch menu that had some great deals. I personal got the Snow White Roll listed on their Chef's Signature Rolls. My husband who isn't a fan of sushi got a Steak Fried Rice lunch that came with salad. The rest of the table got 3 roll lunch; Spicy Tuna, Salmon Avocado, and Shrimp Tempura Roll, Paradise Cake Roll, and Spicy Salmon Bowl. Our dishes were prepared swiftly and arrived at the same time. The sushi was fresh and beautifully presented. I really enjoyed my Snow White Roll with its many layers of flavors. It was a little sweet and a little spicy, the perfect balance. It has coconut shrimp, spicy tuna, mango, and topped with seared chili white tuna, avocado, jalapeño, and flakes of coconut. It was delicious! I also tried the Paradise Cake Roll (another Chef's Signature Roll), that was uniquely layered with spicy salmon, regular salmon, avocado, eel, marinated Ikura, and citrus mayo. The flavors melted together and loved that neither of the ingredients over powered one another. The Signature Rolls are definitely where I think Gohan shines, I wish I could had tried more. We left very full and satisfied. We grabbed one of Gohan's takeout menus for another time. This was a great sushi treat and is worth all the hype. Gohan is very deserving of 5-Stars!

Recently found this hidden gem Gohan Japanese Cuisine located in Southington, CT. I can't say enough about this place, I truly had a great experience, & I will be back again. The establishment is super cute. The space isn't huge but it has a few tables available. The staff was super friendly and continued to check in on us, which showed just how great the customer service was. I love finding a great lunch deal & their prices on the daily are reasonable already so I could not complain! Started off with the salad and miso soup, tasted as expected but all served in a timely manner prior to the appetizers! We then received the Titan sushi appetizer which was truly astonishing in looks as well as the taste. It was shrimp tempura wrapped in tuna, mango, avocado, topped with jalapeno, coconut flakes, cranberry, & thinly sliced lime served with a homemade balsamic vinegar. I can say it also did not feel heavy at all!!!!! Normally some specialty rolls tend to be overpowered with rice but with this, everything was the right ratio, & I truly enjoyed it. The other appetizer we had were the Thai spicy wings, which were yummy. The wings did not taste dry and were super moist, came right off the BONE.... Seriously enjoyed these so much, I will order them any time I visit moving forward. The 3 sushi roll lunch option was great. All 3 rolls were light and had good flavor to them. I normally order the chicken katsu when I go to places that have it so I can try the different cooking styles. I thought this one tasted good & I liked the light stickiness to the rice.

Stopped in after floating on the river. Hands down the best decision. Some of the best sushi I have ever had. Friendly staff, very clean, and charming atmosphere. I got the flame touch, and it didn't disappoint. Never would I think that prime rib and beef go well together - but I was wrong. I'll definitely be driving the hour back again.

It is always fun to see how pleasantly surprised new customers are when they visit Gohan in their Strip mall location. Some walk-in thinking it may be lower quality but they always leave very impressed. Gohan truly does have the greatest fresh and perfectly chilled sushi in Connecticut. The owner is a creative genius who is both innovative and friendly. Parking is easily accessible in the large lot right in front of the restaurant. Everything is clean and well organized in their small dining area.

Run, don't walk! This place is incredible!! Hands down the best sushi I've had in the area and arguably in all of CT. Gohan is family owned and operated. The interior is clean, bright, and comfortable. It's small inside and they do have take-out. We were greeted by the owner and sushi chef. He was so pleasant and welcoming. He offered us some information about menu items and suggestions. We ordered miso soup and edamame while we decided on some rolls. The miso soup was perfect! And we enjoyed the edamame too. We ordered two Chef's Signature rolls and one of their special rolls. The Tiger roll was so bright and delicious! It had spicy salmon, mango, avocado, and a delicious sauce, topped with a thinly sliced lemon. Unbelievable! Absolutely beautiful and delicious. We also had the Spring Breeze roll with salmon, white tuna, avocado, and cucumber. Very nicely done and amazing flavors. The special roll we had was called Flame Touch... omg. What a roll! It was spicy tuna, avocado, scallion, topped with a piece of ribeye steak and thinly sliced jalapeño. Out of this world!! The flavors in that roll, and all the rolls we had were so delicious, unique, creative, and fresh!! Go support these amazing people! We spoke to the wife and she was explaining to us that in Japan, it takes 5 years of study just to become a master with cooking rice. There is so much education, effort, creativity, and expertise put into this amazing sushi restaurant. The chef is simply outstanding. Highly recommend!!! read more

I rarely give 5 stars, but this place deserves it. It was simply the best sushi I can remember ever having. Freshest softest fish ever. And I had it with Brown rice, but it was still tender and held together. I got the basic sushi plate and there at least four different kinds of fish. Service ws very attentive as well. Good selection of soft drinks, not just coke and sprite. read more

Hidden gem. Go out of your way to stop here for sushi. It's amazingly fresh and delicious! Toro lover was great but the toro sushi was a bit chewy in the tendon. Four season roll was great - I think it was off menu order. read more

Tried Gohan for the first time tonight. Good sushi. Got the Tiger Roll, Rainbow Roll and X-Mas Roll. Also tried Umami Tuna Bowl. The Tiger Roll was an experience, really enjoyed the distinct citrus notes of the mango and lemon. All really good cuts of fish. Very flavor rolls. The umami tuna bowl was exceptional. Also, they were very accommodative as my wife cannot eat seaweed and they made a couple of rolls with soy paper on request. Very satisfied. Look forward to eating here again. read more

My husband, mother-in-law and myself stopped here on our way to NY from NH. We are so glad we happened upon this amazing little sushi spot right off the highway for dinner. The staff was extremely helpful and friendly. The presentation of the food is incredible and very fresh. Everyone loved what they got. No leftovers for me! If we lived here we would definitely be back ASAP. They let us know they opened up just 6 months ago and I wish them continued success. Small storefront, just a few tables. Spacious, airy, clean. We are on a six hour drive to do a college trip. I'm a might peckish, and we both love sushi. I honestly saw all the five star reviews and assumed a conspiracy, and I am not generally thinking about conspiracies. My theories were laid too rest. The reality of the sushi was incredibly delicious. Not overly spicy, very fresh fish with luscious silkiness without any hint of ammonia. We were politely informed that the restaurant would close in 25 minutes. We chose quickly and were served quickly. The cashier apologized for closing, which was sweet, but we were ready to be on our way. This was a wonderful find. If you live here and haven't eaten here yet, you must stop and eat delicious food read more

Arguably the best sushi place in this part of Connecticut! The chef is very creative in making his signature rolls. A couple of weeks ago, my husband and I came to Gohan by chance for the first time. By the time we left, we knew that it would be a place to which we would gladly return. Today I brought a foodie friend who has quite the choosy taste for good food to get her take on my new find. After trying two sets of rolls with contrasting but equally exquisite flavors, we were both won over by their freshness and uniqueness. The rolls definitely did not taste like the run-of-the-mill ones you typically get in other restaurants. They seemed to carry a mission to reflect the talent and delight with which the chef made them. If you're looking for an unforgettable sushi-eating experience, choose Gohan and you will not be disappointed. read more

My wife and I are Sushi fanatics and have come here 3 times since they opened! The highest quality of fish, terrific presentation and preparation make stopping here an absolute must. Gohan adds a touch of citrus to much of their sushi adding parity to certain fish.). They keep it fresh with frequent new creations. The owners are so warm and welcoming. I highly recommend the yellowtail, bluefin and toro(fatty tuna) This truly is high end Omakase level sushi at an absolute bargain. read more

Rachel walked us through our meal and it was wonderful. We took her recommendation for apps and had salmon and the Tako Su- both of which were out of this world! Unlike any octopus I have ever had before- delicious. We had a roll with Toro that was stunning and a layered sushi roll (I think it was called a paradise roll.) We were talked into trying the ube and matcha ice cream and they were sooooo creamy and flavorful, she even told us the secret behind them! Such a fabulous experience, they are really proud of the creative work they put into their dishes. This place will now be in our rounds. I heard they always have different fish based on what's good at the time. read more

I had lunch here today. I tried the spicy salmon bowl. It was delicious, refreshing and filling. It's my new favorite thing. And what's even better is they serve you cucumber Infused water with your meal. Last week I did take out and enjoyed the sashimi lunch which included 12 pieces of sashimi, rice and miso soup. Rest of the seating are high tops against a wall by the bar or up the stairs on another level. We would have liked to sit upstairs but they were closing off that area. Menu was complex as the restaurant is authentic Japanese. Lots of beef options. Lots of Wagyu. I was hoping to be blown away by this restaurant trying something different. I was struggling trying to find something to order that sounded appetizing. I knew going in that this place was authentic Japanese but I don't know, nothing sounded great to me. I love mushrooms so I got the Mixed Kinoko Mushroom appetizer which was $15. To add scallops was another $8. Mushrooms were tasty. Scallops were not. $23 for a small dish. I also got the pork short ribs. Not a ton of meat on them, however, nice flavor. I was still hungry after this so I ordered a dessert which was the best part of the meal. They get some of their desserts from Hen & Heifer which is a well established place in Guilford. I got the Ube Panna cotta. Boyfriend got the Black cod Yu-an Yaki and upgraded to add the salad, pickles and rice for $3 more. The pickles were maybe two bites. Salad tasty but again, very small. He said the cod was just ok too. Very small portions and pricey for what you get. $30 for a mini sake flight. Not impressed with how it was served either. Small tasting glasses just placed on the table with no description. The server explained which was which, but I didn't remember. Not sure if he didn't care or this is how it's normally served, but if you go to a wine bar/brewery, they provide descriptions with flights usually written underneath the glass, or at least serve it in something. Not just tiny glasses placed on a table where you have no idea what you're having. Especially for $30! I was not impressed with this place whatsoever. As this is part of a newer restaurant group with a few different locations nearby in New Haven, we then went to their cocktail Lounge on crown street (116 Cocktail Bar) thinking it might be better, however we were equally disappointed. It was dead in there and the bartenders were miserable. They couldn't wait to get out of there. I have heard that their hand roll bar is very good (Handroll on State St). We have been to their Grocery Store called The Loop and it's cute. They have a brunch at the Grocery/Kitchen location that looks really good. They also have a wine lounge at The Loop that I'd like to try.

It is way more spacious than their previous location and nicely decorated. We sat in a nice Modular Half Moon Restaurant Sofa in the back. Felt like I was looking down upon the rest of the guests having dinner. Nice table just felt a bit like we were on display however I still enjoyed as I love the style of these tables. Our waiter I think was new and definitely did not know wine. We asked for a bottle of the Merlot, which he pronounced back to us "Mer-LOT." I couldn't help but chuckle a bit when he left the table. Someone else came and opened the wine for us and when our main server came to check on us, he grazed the side of my glass and freaked, telling us the glasses are $500 each and if he breaks one, it comes out of his paycheck. Ummm what? This stuff we probably should not know! Again, I think he was new, probably not having much experience as a waiter. He definitely needs training on how to pronounce wine! Moving on to the cheese, they used to give you a cheese board with a few different cheeses. It's a bit different now. They give you whipped butter, a few pieces of cheese (last night was Cheddar), roasted red peppers, and whipped goat cheese with a touch of honey on top and some bread. Not sure if this changes/rotates at their new location. We chose not to do the raw bar or appetizer courses (fyi those are extra). For my salad, I chose the Signature Salad (forgot to take a picture of this course). This is where things went downhill for me. I asked for no apples. He said no problem. He did not tell us they ran out of the dried cranberries and caramelized nuts which to me make the whole salad. I used to love this salad at the old location. So, when telling us the specials he did say he "thinks" they had one salmon entree left, but had to check. Restaurants run out of things, and I get it, but take that salad off the menu if you're out of 2 ingredients and the customer asks for no apples. All that we got on our salads was lettuce, gorgonzola and fried potato skins. I feel like I had French fries on top of lettuce. It was awful. Also, I'm the only one that asked for no apples and my boyfriend got the same salad I got with only potato skins and lettuce and gorgonzola so clearly they were running out of things. We then saw other customers getting the same salad lacking main ingredients. For my entree, I got the Heavenly, which was supposed to have a lobster sauce. I couldn't put my finger on what the flavor of the sauce was. It was strange. It wasn't bad, it just didn't really go with the lobster. It had a brown tint to it. The manager came over after we ate and asked us how things were, and I told him about the salad and asked what the flavor in the sauce was. He told us a crab style sauce which made sense. Boyfriend had the filet. He said it wasn't Ruth's Chris good, but it was good. Mashed potatoes were very bland. Presentation was pretty bad. Dessert they get from a third party. I had the flourless chocolate cake which was the best part of the meal. Desserts are where they have improved with the new location. They used to give you petit fours style desserts, and now they give you full size desserts. It was delicious. I really want to like this place more because I like the concept of what they do. I guess on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays the chef creates whatever he'd like for guests for $25 a head. Mystery meals. The manager said that's where the name "Adventures in Eating" comes from. Again, we had come here previously, and I had a problem the last time with the Branzino where the waitress didn't tell me it came as the whole fish. Servers are friendly here, they just aren't top notch. Food is ok.

I ordered the hotdog 10 inch, with mustard, onion, and sauce, in order of onion rings and a Pepsi. After a little bit of a wait because of the lunch rush, my order arrived, and I dug in! The hotdog so flavorful with a snap upon my first bite, and was brilliantly cooked on the flat top, stuffed inside a perfectly grilled New England style hotdog roll. The char on the outside of the roll was a masterpiece. The meat sauce was perfect, with a kind of gravy texture, just the right amount of flavor, one of the best hotdog sauces in my opinion for Connecticut. The white onions accompanied this masterpiece placed upon the hotdog and the yellow mustard. This has to be one of the most perfect hotdogs with toppings in Connecticut. I love coming here for their hotdog. This 10 inch was priced at I think $4.59 with the mustard onion and sauce. I think that's a pretty good deal. The onion rings were restaurant supply chain delivered type I think. They didn't look like they were homemade. They were crispy, but not seasoned. After a little bit of salt, I still didn't like the flavor that much so I added ketchup, which I never do. And the flavor came through. All washed down with a perfect Pepsi, I really enjoyed my lunch. Three different waitresses took care of me, which I didn't mind. They were all polite and attentive. Gohan Japanese Cuisine had been on my radar for a while, and I'm happy to finally be able to experience it firsthand. I had high expectations, and I'm glad to say they were absolutely met. This cozy establishment can probably only seat up to 20 guests, and has a nice, warm, family-friendly vibe. The service was welcoming, with a genuine "mom and pop" feel and friendly smiles from the staff all around. With only three staff members visibly present, including the sushi chef, I can imagine wait times could potentially stretch during unexpected rushes of orders. While the miso soup and gyoza was much of what you world expect from most Japanese restaurants in Connecticut, it was the sushi that truly shined. The "RAW" and Flame Touch signature rolls were excellent, showcasing high-quality ingredients and creative flavor combinations. The Wild King Salmon rice bowl was also enjoyable, though the sushi rolls were the clear standout for us. I did wish there was a bit more ikura to complement the dish. And while the sushi rice itself was excellent for all the dishes, I found it slightly cooler than ideal, which could have further enhanced the overall experience. The restaurant has a playful touch, with Dragon Ball figurines adorning the sushi bar and sushi rolls referencing the popular anime, a nod that will undoubtedly resonate with the younger crowd. While we didn't receive a formal drink menu, the display fridge hinted at a selection of Asian beverages. I cannot confirm whether they have any alcoholic options, however I noticed dangling wine glasses, suggesting at minimum the possibility of BYOB. I'm glad to have made the trip to eat here. They are certainly one of the top sushi establishments in Connecticut, and Southington is very lucky to have them.
