Took a trip up to MKE to peruse a liquor store and figured I'd grab some lunch after I was done. Glad that I yelped this one. I snagged a "Heifer" - beef and cheese sub. The spice blend that they use on their subs is pretty much a show stealer. I also appreciate the fact that they dice the onion and tomatoes. I like the occasional sandwich from time to time. If that's you than this is a great place to get one. My favorite part was the bread. Not only was the bread to ingredient ratio good but the bread tasted fresh. One thing that surprised me was the amount of ingredients that where in the sandwich. Most chain restaurant don't put much in the sandwich but that's not the case here. My sandwich was loaded with meat cheese and lettuce, just the way I like it. Great subs at a really good price! They are the old retro Suburpia subs, when back in the day John Belushi imitated Joe Cocker and sang the Suburpia theme song. (Two friends are joining in a sandwich!) This is what a sub should taste like, with original names like Miles Standish changed to "The Original Gobbler", or a Cattle Baron changed to "The Heffer," and even the Davy Jones changed to "It's Me Charlie!" These are the subs that the counterculture grew up on in Milwaukee, and if you want a taste of the past, you want a Goldcoast sub! They make them one at a time, so the waiting can be annoying, but the quality is second to none. Just call ahead and they'll have your sub ready and waiting. The basics of every sub is there like lettuce, tomatoes, onions, all chopped or sliced and topped with good deli quality meat. The killer are the spices mixed in oil. If you are used to dry sub sandwiches, make sure to bring a napkin when eating a Goldcoast Sub. You'll need one! The subs were originally made at Suburpia restaurants years ago locally in Milwaukee. There was a location in the 70s where Subway is currently located today by Leons on South 27th Street and Euclid. This was in the area before Cousins. They also had a restaurant on 27th and Holt in the late 80s early 90s. The subs are original tasting with the oil and seasoning, delicious bread. The turkey sub sandwich will be the best turkey sub you will ever enjoy. I'm thinking they will make a bigger comeback soon. Outstanding decision to go if you would like a change from the same repetition of Cousins and Subway subs. read more

Based on the reviews I had high expectations, but I was extremely disappointed. My sandwich was SOAKED with oil and basically inedible. They have have the best subs around. The seasoning mix is so good. The owner is always there making the subs and is always very friendly. He always makes sure to tell you that he appreciates your business. It is nice to support these types of places that give you a far superior product. For those of you who remember the old Suburpia, the sandwiches at Gold Coast will be a welcome reminder of the good old days. For those of you who don't remember, give this place a try too. The sandwiches are unique in a great way. To begin with, the bread is awesome. Soft crunch crust with sesame seeds, sturdy yet moist and tender on the inside. Holds up well to the fillings. My "go to" sandwich of choice is the turkey. Relatively high quality deli style turkey, thin sliced, and topped with a mixture of shredded lettuce, finely chopped onion, small tomato cubes, small pieces of American cheese, and their special blend of spices all mixed together with the mystery oil that's so intoxicating as one topping for the sandwich. It's served in a plastic bag...and that's just perfect. Open the bag, hold on tight and start eating. When you think you're done, the best part often remains in the bottom of the bag. Go ahead and scoop out the remnants of the onions, lettuce and tomatoes and that luscious oil. Just don't plan on doing it delicately....not gonna happen. Is this health food? No. Is it delicious? My family has been here 4 times this year. Each time has been consistent. The bread this last time was still fresh even at 7 pm (an hour before they closed). They are still chopping the tomatoes and lettuce which helps spread the flavor and allows the oil and seasoning to mix into the ingredients. In my opinion the seasoning is the selling point of the shop. I have enjoyed it on every type of sub that I get. Also the chips that they sell are of the brand name Dirty. These chips are hard to find but well worth the addition to the subs. I also like the little bit of customer care that they perform when they put different colored twisty ties for the different subs which makes it easy to figure out who's is who's TL:DR Great subs, Great seasoning, Great chips, Great customer service. read more

I've gone to Gold Coast for years and they consistently deliver a great sandwich more often than not the bread is real fresh and the sandwiche is made quickly with excellent seasoning I personally favor the gobbler with medium red peppers on on it with a bag of chips which are phenomenal as well read more

I had not had a Gold Coast sandwich in about 10 years. Was looking forward to that great taste again. I came in & the girl said she would be with me in a minute. No problem...she comes back & I order a "Gobbler" which is their turkey breast sandwich. She is not very friendly. Another gal comes out with my sandwich in a bag. "That was for here...." ...."I can put it in a basket" she says rather flatly. I ask about a flavor of chips they have, "Funky Fusion". ..."What do those taste like?"..... "I dont know", she answers.....sounds annoyed...."They're hard to describe....kinda like all dressed up". I decide on "Maui Onion" instead. ...Sandwich was good....flavor not as pronounced as I remembered....chips were good. I was the only person there....I know I'm reaching here.....but the Unfriendly Servers never came out to ask how it was or say "Thanks"..."Goodbye".... Whatever. Maybe I expect too much. These subs are unique from other subs thanks to the generously large French bread they are made on and the delightfully uniformly diced tomatoes and onions that are tossed in their herbed oil. The girl behind the counter is always extremely friendly and accommodating. The only drawbacks here are the outdated, mismatched decor and seating in the dining area and when you place larger orders, for example 6 subs, the cook in the back requires a longer amount of time than you would expect to have your order ready. (They operate with one person in the back and one person in the front.) All in all, it's a great place to stop for a lunch sub and kettle chips. read more

The subs are made with fresh Italian sub bread. They are bigger than Subway and better! This sub shop has a long and storied history in the Milwaukee area having been spun off Suburpia Subs which is now back in the game. I like Gold Coast better than Suburpia.
