This restaurant was the favorite of my wife and I when we lived in Michigan. We stopped by to eat here on our vacation and we were pretty disappointed. I missed dim sum weekends from living in a big city so I wanted to check out what I've heard is the only place to get Dim Sum in Grand Rapids! It certainly isn't fancy, you'll be eating on paper plates with plastic utensils. The staff is friendly but there is little explanation of what anything is - so you have to go in with an open mind and an empty stomach. There is a full menu if you're feeling less adventurous! I ordered the roast duck and it was the best roast duck i have ever had. I also had the Dim Sum, amazing. The waiter was an 82 yr old man who still moves like a youngster and the father of the owner. Walking into Wei Wei Palace brought back memories of my time in China. The food is the closet to a more traditional style Chinese food devoid of the extra sweet, salty, and candy like flavors of many American Chinese places. Service was nice, quick, and appetizing. We were visiting my mother-in-law in Lansing. We came to Grand Rapids this morning to run an errand and to pick up a couple of things at a Vietnamese market. When we were walking into the market, we noticed the BBQ meat hung at the window of Wei Wei Palace next to the market. We thought my MIL would appreciate a few pick-me-ups to snack on. After finishing our shopping at the market next door, we went to the restaurant to pick up a couple of things MIL would seldom have living on a farm outside of Lansing. We got half a roast duck and 1.5 lbs of roast pork to go. While hostess / waitress / BBQ meat chopper was preparing our order, an apparent long time customer walked in and started speaking with her in Cantonese. When she handed us order, I said thanked her in Cantonese. I think she was pleasantly surprised. I had placed my order in English as I wasn't sure what language she might speak (Mandarin, Cantonese or Vietnamese) and I didn't want to be presumptuous even though the BBQ meats sold are Cantonese cuisine. I admit that I held a it-is-what-it-is attitude approaching the quality of the BBQ meats we bought given where we are from. However, we were pleasantly and delightfully surprised how good they are. Although the skin of the roast pork could be a bit more lighter and crispier, it still packs a good crunch. It probably lost a bit of the crisp from the condensation in the takeout box during the hour ride home. The roast duck was tender and very flavourful as well. I haven't been to this place in years and it's really one of the only places to get classic dim sum served. The place looked worn and run down from what I remembered. It was a Monday so it wasn't busy but my bff said "if I didn't know u and u told me to come here I don't think I would've stayed." They had a table right next to us where they had all their togo supplies, plates and utensils and stuff which I thought was weird. It wasn't the cleanest place but they also did give us paper plates, cups and utensils to use which I found very off putting. But I wanted to give the food a chance despite what we walked into so far. The lady was nice and handed me the paper to mark off what I wanted and then they bring it out to you. I asked for a noodle dish and she made a recommendation that I went with. All the food was how I remembered for the most part, the sauces they offer were good and the noodle dish was pretty tasty. It was a pan fried thick noodle stir fry with beef and veggies and it was a big portion. Another gentleman came out to give us boxes and brought us the check. Didn't mention that the tip was included so we almost double tipped. It really bothers me when places add gratuity and don't say anything. The dim sum here is amazing with great staff! Other than the fact that you are eating on paper plates, which I can get past, the food is absolutely fantastic. However, dim sum plates are around $6/each which is something to keep in mind. The waitress we had went out of her way to explain each dish on the cart which was so sweet, additionally, the ambiance in the restaurant was very nostalgic for me as it's similar to many dim sum places I would go to in the Detroit-metro area growing up. I lived in a big city for five years and fell in love with dim sum. I didn't realize we had any options here until recently and my husband has never been so we made it a priority to get here. The ambiance is a little run down and cluttered. Paper plates, red solo cups and plastic silverware for dishes. We got there right after they opened around 10:15 on a Sunday. I let my husband just pick whatever he wanted to try with the exception that we had to get sticky rice and sesame balls. Everything was good. It definitely satisfied my craving for dim sum but I don't know if anything was great. I don't know all the names of these but know what I like when I see the cart come. I wish they had a chili oil/sauce besides soy sauce and sriracha and wish there was a little dish for those. We just had to pour them on our plates. One star because it's the only dimsum place that we have available in town. Food is okay, but the Owner is extremely rude, and they'll put down extra tally marks when you order dimsum if you're not paying attention. If I could order roast pork, duck, pig ears etc. from somewhere else I would without a second thought. Owner doesn't treat her staff right and is constantly yelling at them in front of customers. The only time she acts right is if you dish it right back at her, and who wants to do that? As a restaurant kid, I can tell you right now that we would never treat our staff or customers the way she treats hers. BTW, an 18% tip is automatically added onto your bill, so no need to put anything on the tip line unless you really feel like you had a superb experience. The food is what I miss from being in Asia and I got all dimsum items. The portions were much bigger than expected ! Cheongfan is a bit thick but still okay. Their shrimp and filling is thick and sauce is so good and refillable, so it makes up for the thickness. I really like their fried taro! Shumai and chicken feet were also yummy, and big portions. One of my favorite authentic style Chinese resteraunts in GR, however I would not recommend getting the dim sum as it is better in bigger cities and just expensive here. Order the normal shareable main dishes! Ordered a lobster win ginger sauce, ginger chicken, chicken feet, Cantonese style pan fried noodles with BBQ pork, fish maw and crab meat soup, and deep fried shrimp balls. First, the fish maw and crab meat soup came out. It has a strong seafood taste and was very refreshing. We added a little bit of the white pepper which enhanced the taste a lot. Shrimp balls came out next and these are the same quality you would see at a bigger city resteraunt. Highly recommended. The lobster was very delicious, a bit on the more expensive side even for lobster but the taste can beat out any American cooked lobster. Ginger chicken was very lean and the middle pieces were tender. Some of the pieces that weren't in the sauce was a bit bland. The chicken feet (dim sum) tasted average, no complaints. Cantonese pan fried noodles were extremely crispy when first brought out as expected. As you leave the dish at your table, the noodles get softer as it sits in the sauce. The BBQ pork within the dish could have been a bit more tender. The environment was OK. They recently shrunk their resteraunt space so everything isn't as spacious as in the past. They have live fish and lobster within tanks in the resteraunt for people to see along with roasted chicken and roasted duck in the window by their entrance. The young lady server was not polite and when I tried to speak in Cantonese, she said 'English speaking only'. Ordered 乾燒伊麵 with black mushroom and other veggies, but it only served with the noodle and tiny bits of bean and carrot without mushroom at all. Asked the older lady server who also served dim sum in cart but she said she did not know and walked away with sign of impatience. No customer service at all, no one refill hot tea pot and they charged $1 per person for tea. The worst thing was they automatically added tips on your bill and can only be paid by cash. Terrible take-out experience!!! I asked for one pound of the hanging roast pork from the elderly manager at the take-out counter. He got a meatman to come out from the back kitchen area of the restaurant who then cut me a large piece and it weighed 1-1/2 pounds. I reminded the manager that I had only requested one pound of the roast pork and could he give me only that amount. At that, he became irate and said that he would only sell me 1-1/2 pounds. I smelled a scam and refused. He yelled for me never to come back. I've gotten take-out orders from many Chinese restaurants, and they always prepare only the amount and weight requested. When I first moved to Grand Rapids, one of my top priorities was to see if there was any good dim sum. To my surprise, Wei Wei Palace popped up immediately. Even more surprising was that they had dim sum carts. I love the immediate gratification that comes from waving down a cart, choosing what looks good, and enjoying instantaneously. So, Wei Wei Palace seemed very promising. Well, I visited Wei Wei Palace the first weekend I moved to Grand Rapids, and I've been frequenting the establishment ever since. The dim sum here isn't just "good for Grand Rapids." It's actually pretty good! And, since it's really the only option in Grand Rapids with such variety and cart service, it's definitely worth a visit. My go-to items include har gow (shrimp dumpling), siu mai (pork and shrimp dumpling), bean curd, shark fin dumplings, and whatever else I feel in the mood for. I find that the dumplings here are more plump than what I've been used to, and I'm not complaining. In addition, we always get an order of bok choy in garlic sauce. It isn't actually on the menu, but we just ask and they whip it up. And, if I'm really hungry, we order the pan-fried cantonese noodles. I love the mix of crispy noodles and those already softened by the savory sauce. Also, it's nice that Wei Wei serves dim sum all day. In many places, dim sum is only served till mid-afternoon. If you're going for brunch/lunch on the weekend, I recommend getting there before noon just to have a fresh set of dim sum. Wei Wei Palace is one of those places I've had on my list for ages after finding out years ago that it's the only place in Grand Rapids that serves dim sum. Well, we finally got to check it out on Sunday! They offer the dim sum menu anytime they're open, but they only have the carts on Sundays. This was important for me as I'd seen tons of photos of the food and know what things are by sight, but I didn't know many of the names of items. So having the cart is helpful as you can just point at what you want and ask to see all the options! Wei Wei Palace is located in a big plaza with several other businesses. They have a pretty big parking lot but it was almost full when we arrived around 12:30 pm on Sunday. Lots of families and people getting food and shopping at the market in the building. We walked into the restaurant and stood around for a few minutes as another party who came in after us got seated first. Okay, whatever. Soon we were led to a table right by the door which was pretty drafty and gave our drink orders. Everything is marked on a paper as you eat so you can tally up how much you're spending. Then we waited around a bit until a man with a cart came over and we chose some items for our first round: crispy shrimp balls, shrimp rolls, and stuffed eggplant. The crispy shrimp balls were the favorite, with a super crunchy outer coating and tons of great rich shrimp flavor inside with a springy texture. They were a little large; if they were smaller they would be less overwhelming with flavor. The hot chili oil helped cut through the richness a bit, and the temperature was great on these. I also really loved the eggplant, it is steamed and covered in black bean sauce and stuffed with some kind of shrimp mixture. The shrimp rolls were bad; not hot and dense and chewy. Definitely would not get these again, since the crispy shrimp rolls were much better and they're the same idea (shrimp + fried). We finished these dishes pretty quickly and then sat around for awhile until I could flag down the other, larger cart with the steam baskets. Then we got: BBQ pork buns, dumplings, dumplings, and more dumplings. The buns were fluffy and tender, could have definitely used more pork filling. They are really fun to eat, though. The dumplings were all shrimp based, which was kind of disappointing. I really was hoping for some pork shu mai or something besides shrimp. The eggy yellow dumplings were my favorite with the best texture (softer, less chewy and gelatinous) and flavor. The other dumpling items were good but mostly just big pieces of shrimp in really thick wrappers. Overall I'm really glad we went and got to try the dim sum since it was a new experience. I'd probably go back to try some different dishes, including items from the regular menu (which we never saw until I grabbed a takeout menu from the front counter). We ordered the shrimp rolls for appetizers, which were a joke . The Szechuan pork was like "pork cooked in mixed vegetables with some cornflour gravy". This is the most authentic Chinese restaurant I've been to in a very long time! Warning: you might need to ask for the Dim Sum menu if they don't give it to you when you sit down. There was one dumpling that was head and shoulders above the others we tried. The fried meat dumpling! This was arguably the best dumpling I've ever had, it was incredible!! Fried to perfection, great meat stuffing! You can probably go without the Shrimp, Garlic and Chive dumpling, it was nothing to write home about. Lastly we shared the Pan Fried Noodles with BBQ Pork dish and it was amazing. The portions were HUGE! No need to order more than one meal between 2 or even 3 people. I wish there was a bit more variety, seems like most of the options are pork, shrimp, or pork and shrimp. My favorites were the steamed shrimp, shark fin, and the pan fried shrimp and chive. I also got forced into getting another (can't remember the name) because our lovely sever wanted us to try her favorite....sure why not lol. She was very amazed I knew how to use chop sticks, and also mentioned that no sauce was needed for any of the dumplings because they are so full of flavor lol..... Best Chinese food in Grand Rapids. Had the pan fried Cantonese noodles with chicken which was really good. Had the fried rice which was very tasty. Had the Mongolian beef which also was good.
