I wish I could talk about the cuisine but we left before we could even order. A colleague of mine and I were looking for a place to have lunch and she mentioned 456-I wonder if they named their restaurant after the 4,5,6 trains...lol. She said that she ate there once and her supervisor eats there at least twice a week. When we arrived, the host said that we could sit at a communal table (holds about 8 people) which were four two seater tables pushed together. This wasn't a big deal except that the communal table is near the door so every time the door opens, we would feel a draft. We asked to move to a table in the back and I could tell that they didn't want to move us. A party of three came in right after so they got the table. I could understand that but then there was a party of one and a party of two that came in afterwards. The server wanted to take our order but we wanted to be moved. We finally decided to place our orders--my colleague ordered the chicken and broccoli and I wanted to order shrimp with garlic sauce. I didn't see it on the lunch menu. I was going to get the shrimp with chili sauce but decided to ask if they could use garlic sauce instead. The server said that it's just onions. That's not what I asked. At that point, I looked at my colleague and without saying anything, we knew that we were not staying. I'm big on service and I don't entertain nonsense. Their menu seemed diverse enough where you could get all the traditional Shanghainese staples! *AMBIANCE* It has a classic Chinatown restaurant feel that's casual and busy. During busier times, you may be in arm's length distance with strangers if sharing a table. *FOOD* We ordered the pork soup dumplings, peking duck (half) and the general tso's chicken. The peking duck was noticeably dry and lacked the flavor you'd expect. Decided to try the lunch special since it's a good price. It wasn't crowded when I came a little after noon. There is ample seating, but there are times I've passed by that it is packed. The lunch special comes with a hot and sour soup. The soup wasn't hot temperature wise. It also was 3/4 full. The rice and chicken was better. Tastier then the soup. My friend and I were craving dumplings, so she took me to one of her favorite places, 456 Shanghai. We came in on a Saturday early evening around 5 PM, and while Chinatown was packed with crowds, the restaurant itself was not too busy. However, shortly after we arrived, a lot of different groups came in to dine, and it was quickly bustling inside! Service was efficient, and the staff were all very friendly and patient. My friend and i ordered several items to share, including soup dumplings, steamed shrimp dumplings, turnip pastry, chicken lo mein, and chicken chowfun. All of the dishes were steaming hot and delicious. My favorites were of course the dumplings. The soup dumplings were cooked perfectly, and the broth was so flavorful inside. The shrimp dumplings are one of my favorite items to order, and they really hit the spot. I did not even need soy sauce to enjoy them! They were perfectly cooked and flavorful on their own. Food is not the best but ok. Service was lacking though, not sure if because we came a day before NYE and there was a pretty long wait. The food took a while to come out specifically the xiao long bao and fried buns with condensed milk, which were actually not good. The Xiao long bao were one of the worse I've had and the fried buns were very oily. The Shanghainese noodles were pretty good. The beef with string beans were really good. Came with friends, one of whom is Shanghainese and was craving sheng jian bao. We were seated fairly quickly despite there being a line. Seating sure is tight, a bit more so than most places in Chinatown. We got the following: -Spicy cabbage: a cold dish of marinated napa cabbage with other veggies, the veg had a very nice crunch to it and was marinated well, very tasty. Not spicy at all, 5/5, would reorder -Shanghainese kao fu: loved the texture of the kaofu, the sauce was a bit bland and I wish the peanuts were roasted, 3/5 -Sheng jian bao: we were looking for panfried buns with soup inside of them (the bao version of XLB) and these were not it. There was no soup inside but otherwise they were very tasty--the filling was tender and juicy, the bao was fluffy. 4/5 because we were looking for soup filled ones -Sauteed eel: I had never had this dish before but my Shanghainese friend said it was pretty good. The eel it self was fresh and tasty, but most of the dish is sauce and bean sprouts (which he said it normally doesn't have). Very tasty 4/5 A solid place! read more

I met my friend here for lunch on a Tuesday afternoon. She suggested this spot after visiting in the past. The place was packed when we arrived so I knew the food would be good. We had to wait a few minutes for our table. The staff were very friendly and worked quick. We shared a table with another customer. We enjoyed our tea and hot and sour soup that was part of the daily lunch special. The had about 15 different lunch special options. I ordered the spicy chicken with nuts and my friend ordered the chicken with broccoli. Our food was delicious. The food tasted fresh and not greasy. I saw other customers sharing dishes which was doable with the portion sizes. The prices were very affordable. There appeared to be alot of tourists when we visited. I came here for some cozy XLB and dumplings during a Chinatown food crawl and was pretty fulfilled. The interior of the restaurant is casual and cozy, and ideal for groups to enjoy some Chinese food. Service was pretty quick. I got the pork XLB and pan-fried dumplings and thought that they were pretty good! The XLB was full of soup and huge, while the pan-fried dumplings are crispy and so juicy. However, the dining area felt extremely crowded, and guests were seated together at shared tables with strangers, which created an awkward experience. The service could have been much more attentive. It took quite a while for a server to come take our order, and I eventually had to signal someone for assistance. Today I went for lunch break while I had jury duty nearby & as usual it did not disappoint! I tried the vegetable with tofu skins & it came with a baby cup of hot & sour soup & a baby cup of white rice. There was so much bok choy & tofu skins that I couldn't finish it all & I had to take the rest to go, even though it was very light & healthy. The best part is that I always feel really good after I eat there & I can't say that about too many places! There is complimentary green tea as well. & with tax my bill was $9.25. They were playing some interesting authentic Chinese instrumental music that I enjoyed & yes, the tables are a little close together, but the seats are comfortable & the wall hangings are nice. I'm not sure why the reviews are averaging so low -- the food here is excellent. Shanghainese isn't the easiest to find and 456 New Shanghai is a solid spot for Shanghainese and general Chinese. The restaurant was pretty full when we dined on a weekday, but I saw a lot of tables ordering items such as plain fried rice and General Tso's (so not experiencing the full complexity of Shanghainese cuisine). We opted for gems like the seaweed fried fish (truly excellent), braised meatball and red bean rice dessert. The portions were very generous. The food was 5 stars and the service was great. One of my go-to spots for take-out, pickup is always quick after ordering. I usually get chicken and vegetables or beef with tofu. Their lunch special is cheap and the container is always packed. I usually eat half and save the other half for the next day at work (but if I'm really hungry, I can eat the whole thing). The lunch special also comes with hot and sour soup, but I can't comment on it bcus I am not of fan of that type of soup so I would give it away to a coworker. Get the dumplings! And nothing else! One of the best things about traveling is being able to try food from all over the world, all over the world. The last time I had any sort of dumpling this good was when I was in Vancouver, and that is setting the bar high. It also helps that you get eight with an order, EIGHT! The price is also incredibly fair as well as they are around $7-$8, which is about $1 a dumpling. That is a great deal. The staff is also very friendly and will show you how to eat these, which you never see these days. Most just leave you up to your own devices, but here they want to see to it that the food you enjoyed, that they prepared, is eaten properly and thoughtfully. That is how you treat a customer. In addition, they offer lunch specials that are likely worth checking out. There is nothing wrong with some chicken, beef, white rice, and lo mein noodles as a meal if you want to go that route. Read a review that this Chinatown spot had some awesome soup dumplings, so decided to stop by. We visited on a Saturday evening (around 6:30pm) and while we were able to get seated immediately, I saw that it filled up within 30 minutes! Good to get there on the earlier side. We weren't that hungry so just ordered the Crab/pork soup dumplings and also the Shrimp with Salt and Pepper. Rice is an additional $1.75. The soup dumplings were very good- it was a lot meatier than I had expected, and the broth tasted nice and clean (sometimes it's a little too fatty). The crab meat is deep inside the pork so unfortunately didn't get much of a crab flavor, so next time I would just stick with the classic pork soup dumpling. The server had asked if we wanted the shrimp with or without the shell, which I thought was a nice touch- we got it without the shell. While simple, the dish was so flavorful with a spicy kick (sliced chilies mixed in with the shrimp.) The shrimp were huge and very meaty too. Best known for their soup dumplings which are rich, full of savory broth and meat fillings (get the crab and pork),har gow (shrimp dumplings) the skin is fresh tender and full of savory shrimp, pan fried dumplings are great too with a variety of fillings, soup (hot sour is our go to), large appetizer variety (crunchy fresh jellyfish is the best). We always get a noodle dish and fried rice, oh and their house special crispy duck is delicious!
