We stopped by 456 New Shanghai as it was one of the few restaurants in NY's Chinatown that accepted CCs and had more flexible closing hours after a long day exploring the city. Their menu seemed diverse enough where you could get all the traditional Shanghainese staples! *AMBIANCE* It has a classic Chinatown restaurant feel that's casual and busy. During busier times, you may be in arm's length distance with strangers if sharing a table. *FOOD* We ordered the pork soup dumplings, peking duck (half) and the general tso's chicken. The peking duck was noticeably dry and lacked the flavor you'd expect. Overall, the food felt quite average. *SERVICE* Service was efficient, but like other busy Chinatown restaurants, you may have to flag them down a few times to ask what you need. With so many other spots nearby, 456 was a convenient option, but I would recommend trying some other spots first before coming here.

I like the goto menus I order when I come here. They're soup dumplings, sea cucumber fish soup, and sometimes fish filets. If you love soup dumplings, this place will satisfy your craving....

our second fav choice in chinatown. Food is really good and legit. Even in the busiest hours you will get a table right away. They have good service and a very decent menu. Prices are reasonable too. Loved their chowmein. Their soups are amazing too

Came here for soup dumplings (take out) at a great price: 8 for $9! Most places are charging $10+ for 4.... soup dumplings here are great and are always made fresh. I usually see a crowd whenever I'm here so that's always a good sign too :) located in the middle of Mott street in the heart of Chinatown.

Food is not the best but ok. Service was lacking though, not sure if because we came a day before NYE and there was a pretty long wait. The food took a while to come out specifically the xiao long bao and fried buns with condensed milk, which were actually not good. The Xiao long bao were one of the worse I've had and the fried buns were very oily. The Shanghainese noodles were pretty good. The beef with string beans were really good. They didn't look pretty because they use a dark sauce. First I thought it was dark soy sauce but ended up it was sweet bean sauce and it gave it a pretty flavor. It was my favorite dish.

My friend and I were craving dumplings, so she took me to one of her favorite places, 456 Shanghai. We came in on a Saturday early evening around 5 PM, and while Chinatown was packed with crowds, the restaurant itself was not too busy. However, shortly after we arrived, a lot of different groups came in to dine, and it was quickly bustling inside! Service was efficient, and the staff were all very friendly and patient. My friend and i ordered several items to share, including soup dumplings, steamed shrimp dumplings, turnip pastry, chicken lo mein, and chicken chowfun. All of the dishes were steaming hot and delicious. My favorites were of course the dumplings. The soup dumplings were cooked perfectly, and the broth was so flavorful inside. The shrimp dumplings are one of my favorite items to order, and they really hit the spot. I did not even need soy sauce to enjoy them! They were perfectly cooked and flavorful on their own. Overall we had a fantastic time at 456 Shanghai. I can see why my friend loves coming here, and I'm hooked too!

I came here to pick up my dinner. The wait time was pretty quick and the food was good. I ordered a rice cake with chicken dish and it was great to eat after having dinner. The interior was tidy and clean. I definitely think this is a great place for a weekday dinner if you are in the area and want a bit in a small or large group.

I met my friend here for lunch on a Tuesday afternoon. She suggested this spot after visiting in the past. The place was packed when we arrived so I knew the food would be good. We had to wait a few minutes for our table. The staff were very friendly and worked quick. We shared a table with another customer. We enjoyed our tea and hot and sour soup that was part of the daily lunch special. The had about 15 different lunch special options. I ordered the spicy chicken with nuts and my friend ordered the chicken with broccoli. Our food was delicious. The food tasted fresh and not greasy. I saw other customers sharing dishes which was doable with the portion sizes. The prices were very affordable. There appeared to be alot of tourists when we visited. There was always a line by the door but it moved quickly. This is definitely a spot I would check out again.

I came here for some cozy XLB and dumplings during a Chinatown food crawl and was pretty fulfilled. The interior of the restaurant is casual and cozy, and ideal for groups to enjoy some Chinese food. Service was pretty quick. I got the pork XLB and pan-fried dumplings and thought that they were pretty good! The XLB was full of soup and huge, while the pan-fried dumplings are crispy and so juicy. The only complaint that I have is that both were super thick on dough, so it was very heavy. However, the pork filling was delicious for both and full of soup and juice.

Came here on a recommendation from a bartender around the corner. Everything came out very quick and nice and hot. We ordered the crab and pork soup dumplings, pan fried dumplings, and the fried tiny buns with pork. All were great a flavorful but my favorite were the Soup dumplings, they were AMAZING! We were so full and spent less than $40!!! It's right in the middle of Chinatown, where there are a lot of options but this is definitely a place I will tell others to go and hope to come back myself!

This restaurant is my go to when showing people around Chinatown. The staff here is incredibly friendly and accommodating. The food is incredible. We've tried the traditional Chinese-American fare, and we've also tried more traditional Chinese dishes. This place does not disappoint. Their dumplings (shown) are worth traveling across the river for. Do yourselves a favor and try this place out.

Food was soooooo delicious! Tea was yummy and warm, that's what I needed! The ambience was relaxing, enjoyable and comforting. The staff were great, friendly and welcoming. Would definitely eat here again and highly recommend it.

A Chinatown Must‑Visit for Dumpling Lovers…read more I was in New York on a work trip, and my colleague - a proud local - promised to take me to the best dumpling spot in Chinatown. Let me tell you, he did not exaggerate. This place absolutely delivered. The moment we walked in, the atmosphere hit me first: colorful, lively, buzzing with energy in the best way. It's hip without trying too hard, and everything felt clean and well‑kept. Service was lightning fast, too - dishes were coming out almost as quickly as we could order them. Now, the dumplings. Amazing. Truly some of the best I've ever had. Perfectly cooked, packed with flavor, and paired with a savory sauce that made every bite even better. Even the little dipping sauce was delicious. You can tell they take pride in what they serve. A couple of tips for anyone planning a visit: * They're cash‑only, so make sure you come prepared. * Reservations are encouraged - this place is clearly a go‑to spot, and for good reason. If you're in Chinatown and craving dumplings that actually live up to the hype, this restaurant is a must. I'll definitely be back next time I'm in the city!

I loved the ginger ponzu mixture that came with the soup dumplings and will be dreaming about these dumplings for weeks to come! Would love to go back to try other items and see the super friendly staff again.

It's a pretty solid lunch spot for during work and this just happened to be a few blocks from my office. I thought this spot would look like a hole-in-the-wall spot, but the space is actually decent with a full dining area. They do have a lunch menu, which is in the last page of the menu. Why they hid it all the way in the back, I have my assumptions and suspicions. I had to get an order of soup dumplings here so I got the Crab Soup Dumplings ($15). The skin is a bit thicker than other spots, but that means the skin ain't going to break on you easily. And do be careful how you bite into it, as the first one I bit into, the soup splattered all over my shirt and pants. Overall tasted great. Soup dumplings was not going to fill me up along, so I got something off of their lunch menu and settled upon Orange Chicken w Brown Rice ($18.50). Chicken was white meat, which is battered and deep fried. It says it was spicy, but it really wasn't. Comes with a vegetable spring roll and a choice of rice, which makes this a pretty decent lunch deal for $20. Menu prices are cash prices. If you pay with a credit card, they will slap a 2% processing fee. Overall, service was pretty decent as well. Would come back again for lunch.

We ordered both the standard pork XLB and my faves, the pork and crab ones, as well as pan fried pork dumplings which I was surprised to discover were also full of soup, chicken corn dumplings, and two noodle dishes: rice cake with pork & mustard greens, and pan fried noodles with beef. Servers were conscientious about allergies and very specific about letting us know which items were which, but other than that were largely appropriately hands off. They did ask us, mid-meal, if it would be ok if a service dog were at the next table to ours, which I thought was courteous. (The service dog was adorable and well behaved.) Shredded crispy duck is lean, crisp (living up to its name) and in my estimation, perfect! A half order is $33 and comes with crepes and what I guess is thin-cut celery and hoisin sauce. Our other two dishes merit maybe four stars. I had high hopes for prawns with black bean sauce and minced pork, but there was little pork and the dish was under-seasoned. Beaten egg white, a component of the sauce, was almost raw and when separated from the black beans, runny and unappealing. When I inquired about 'vegetarian delight,' our server suggested creating our own dish. Four sautéed vegetables for $16. I went with bok choy, broccoli, mushrooms and fried tofu. I asked for a flavorful sauce. I believe we got garlic, but it was too subtle, not garlicky enough.. Service is on-the-ball. Ambience is lovely.
