Finally our first time back at the " NEW CHICKEN" with friends for late Friday night dinner. Customer service was very accommodating, they gave us all free drinks due to a cash only situation that night ( large bottle of Pellegrino and 4 diet cokes). We ordered a bit of everything: Chicken with snow peas, General Tso's chicken, Mongolian beef, Walnut Shrimp, Pork Shrimp panfried dumplings, & Lamb and Chive Beijing pie. Overall the food was not overly seasoned and no overwhelming taste of MSG. Food was made to order, the proteins were tender and vegetables fresh and crunchy and food was vibrant with color. Dumplings and Beijing pies had plenty of soup and paired great with the chili oil! Heads up all the dishes come with a side of rice already and healthy portion sizes. We sat at in the open area with windows open, so outside traffic was loud but it's downtown so it's expected but if you're bothered by the noise you can choose seats further away. If you haven't came back to try this new place out, go for it! We're definitely adding this to our friend's late night food stops in the 805. Here is what I have to say about this place I'm gonna still give it five stars because this was an experience, but I'll say this don't go in with any expectations. I heard some people say that it's rundown but honestly that's what made me like it even more. It has like this old-school vintage feel to it and the fact that you go upstairs into this little wooden room with separated, family rooms is pretty cool. Reminds me of being like in New Yorks China town, then you have an elderly couple running the whole show who speak very little English and though it was a little bit complicated trying to figure things out. I have to appreciate this because it gives it that like mom and Pop shop vibe them just running this little business where you could see the kitchen and Mom's cooking everything in the back, the food takes forever. It's slow and while I was there. There were three different customers that were pissed off and yelling at them. One of them was a DoorDash order that was not received. The other was a lady had been waiting 30 minutes for her food and never got it and then they got some other order wrong, I understand the frustration if you compare it to other businesses right, but I think I just didn't go expecting anything. I was just appreciative for whatever the experience was going to be the and the fried rice and the orange chicken was freaking amazing bomb like so delicious I think my sugar elevated just from eating it, the chicken chow mein was a little funky. I had to put some sweet-and-sour sauce and Sriracha on it, but then it tasted pretty good. The Mongolian beef was pretty yummy. The spring rolls were bomb and the egg soup was phenomenal. This is not a fancy place at all there are no bells and whistles, she brought us out we look like tapwater and we could only order a canned Coke or Diet Coke But I think it was a pretty cool experience. I felt like I went over to someone to eat and I'm here for it. There's definitely a lot of issues with language barriers getting orders wrong for example I ordered a combo fried rice with different meats and all I got was shrimp, but I wasn't even mad about it because I couldn't really complain But if you're willing to just experience it enjoy their good items and just be patient and going with a good attitude. It's definitely a very cool vibe and that's why I still gave it five stars because I got handed to this elderly couple just holding it down, getting yelled at all the time and I think if they had a little bit more help and support this place could definitely be Poppin. Is my husband used to eat here a lot over 20 years ago when I moved here 20 years ago he said he was gonna bring me to eat and we never came until now. Visited my husbands hometown and he loves coming to this place for nostalgia. I was hesitant as we've been here before but bit the bullet to make him happy. WOW. I believe it's new ownership. Had the pork fried rice and couple other food plates (kung pao and sesame chicken) but the won ton soup and fried dumplings were mom in laws favorite! We will definitely be back. Rating: 3.5 I agree with this restaurant's current 3.5 rating. This is an interesting little restaurant on the top floor of a busy building with other businesses at the bottom of it. We didn't find parking so had to park a block away at Heritage Square. We got our order to go but got to check out the inside which is a charming little spot. Onto the food-- Beef soft noodles: this is your run of the mill chow mein. Nice mix of noodles and bean sprouts. Not a whole lot of beef in it but we enjoyed it. Shrimp fried rice: good dish. Decent amount of shrimp. No need for extra soy sauce on it since it already has some in it. Kung pao chicken: this was also good. They have mild, medium, and hot options. We got medium and it had good flavor and spice level. Not too over the top. Wor wonton soup: while the broth had good flavor, the chicken and wonton were not very good. The chicken was rubbery and the wonton was basically all dough. I wouldn't get this again. Eggrolls: they were very nicely toasty on the outside and had a nice crunch but the inside was soft and a bit doughy. Not a fan and wouldn't get this again. The New Chicken is Golden once again! Reading the terrible reviews from the previous ownership was almost enough to scare us away, but don't let that stop you from taking a trip to experience the rebirth of this century-old remnant of Oxnard's Chinatown, The food was excellent, prepared fresh by the family of expert Beijing-style cooks, which means you may have to wait a while, but it's all worth the wait. The broccoli in the beef broccoli was tender and crisp perfect and the sauces well balanced. The large selection of "Beijing Pie" fried dumplings provide a tasty dish, and the shrimp was great, too. Other Beijing-style treats like a whole menu of soup dumplings call us back for another visit. Past problems with communication are gone with the arrival of amiable and attentive host Mario, ready to explain everything in flawless English or Spanish. Oh, and the restrooms are well maintained as well. Haven't been here for years, but one thing I can say is they haven't changed. Good is good. We ordering the combo #4 for 2 people. It was definitely enough food to feed 4! I really like their pork chow mien. It comes with crunchy noodles (unless you ask for soft noodles) and bean sprouts. Their house fried rice has char sue, egg, bean sprouts, peas and carrots. This restaurant is great , the food is super yummy . All of my friends love to come here for parties . They have lambs etc., now . I love lambs so much ! I heard they would release new menu which would include combo again just like what there had different combination food before . The service is perfect too , the waiter is very warm and treats us like old friends , when she has time , we will talk with each other. I wish the company would change the name. The new owners have completely changed the original recipes. The one we've all known and love for decades. They no longer have combo meals. Everything you order has to be by el a carte. And it gets insanely expensive. 75 dollars for ordering 4 items to share with a family of 3. Used to be a really good spot and hadn't been then for years, up until tonight. What a disaster, chicken didn't look at all like chicken. Egg rolls, mushy inside. Dumplings, well one of them had a sticker underneath from a fuji apple...yeah. Offered no sauces, which in hindsight is probably a good thing. Water looked lime tap and glasses/utensils weren't clean. Lady barely spoke when we had questions or time to order, the interaction was awkward almost like we were putting them out by being there. We got pork with vegetables, nothing BBQ about it. Was told they don't make just BBQ Pork anymore . Ordered Pork fried rice. Didn't have BBQ pork pieces had just pork no flavor, and no veggies of any kind, just pork and rice nothing else. Ordered chicken chow mein came with chunky chicken not the strips like before and was VERY salty. Didn't get any fried noddles. A serious waste of my money! Ordered the BBQ mixed plate through Doordash--no kalbi (they replaced it with katsu--not at my request), no mac salad, chicken was chewy and was still charged the full amount. This used to be my favorite Chinese restaurant in Oxnard by a long mile! But my last visit wasn't really up to its usual standards. The food was mediocre compared to the last time I ate there. The dishes looked and tasted very differently and it almost looked like a different chef cooked them. The walnut shrimp is supposed to be lightly battered, with just a hint of crunch. The ones I got were battered and deep fried similar to sweet and sour pork, very thick coating.
