This was the first time I had ever ordered from Golden Chicken Inn. I placed a phone order for the crab cheese wontons, veggie egg rolls, sesame chicken and orange chicken. The cashier was super friendly when I picked up. Now for the food... The somewhat bland crab cheese wontons were okay. I liked the flavor and texture of the crispy veggie egg rolls. However, the majority of the chicken in both of the entrees was inedible. Tons of deep fried batter that was strangely sweet and most of it was so hard that it couldn't be chewed. The curry, disgusting. The chicken in the curry, straight mush. The Mac salad was so watery, sweet, and gross. The rice was super dry as well, tasted like it was a day old. Husband and I finally stopped here for dinner after talking about it for quite a while. The place has a bit of an outdated feel to the inside. Hasn't been remodeled in a long time, and has an interesting layout of little cozy room areas for families to dine in. My husband and I sat in one when we visited as it was a quiet night in the restaurant. We ordered a lot of food to try and were happy with all of it. Nothing particularly amazing but we liked everything we tasted. Noodles, vegetables, pork, fried rice and chicken. Staff was very professional and friendly. If it was possible to give zero stars, I would. This place is GARBAGE. These new owners bought this restaurant for the name recognition only. They changed EVERYTHING. All of the food is different. Anyone who has ever eaten here in the past, when the chicken chow mein was chicken chow mein and the chicken fried rice was chicken fried rice knows the difference. The eggrolls are gone. Now you just get some frozen, filled with ginger flavored mush egg roll. The chicken chow mein is virtually unrecognizable- full of tasteless, uncooked vegetables, no bok choy, and some weird tangled blobs of chicken meat. (See pic). The chicken fried rice is orange colored packaged Mexican rice looking crap with scrambled egg and ground up chicken. (See pic) and those nasty eggrolls now come with a packet of bright red sweet and sour sauce. This food is worse than ANY other Chinese food I have EVER had. Anyone who gives this place more than one star never ate at the real Golden Chicken Inn. This place is an abomination. Horrible. read more

I've been visiting golden chicken inn since I was a kid some 35 years ago. I went today and definitely found the food not on par with what I was accustomed to. It wasn't horrible, but the fried shrimp that I used to die for has been replaced with what appears to be from Gordon's frozen shrimp. The egg flower soup was changed too. Yesterday, oct 16, was the first time i went to Golden Chicken Inn since I was young. I remember this place being the place our family would go for family dinner. It was always so delicious and consistent. Yesterday, that childhood memory of this place was ruined, and if I could give this place zero stars, I would. Upon arriving, the people were kind but immiatly there was a language barrier, which isn't a huge deal but it made it hard to communicate our order. We ordered the chow mein mix, orange chicken, and a bowl of eggdrop soup. What used to be classics for this place. We were given fried, thick wonton strips before our food came, to snack on. Something was off, they were soggy and undercooked. Not crispy at all, but we gave it the benefit of the doubt. That should have been our first red Flag. when our food arrived, they gave us no plates to eat on until we asked but they were soaking wet. Our chowmein looked odd... there was no color and flavor in the noodles, the beef was undercooked and the chicken didn't look like chicken. We were most excited for the orange chicken but it smelled bad. It smelled like it had been fermented or like the batter had been sitting out and had fermented and tasted rancid. I had to spit it out, I couldn't swallow it. Finally, when the egg drop soup was placed on our table, I was shocked at the apperance. It was a bright red in color, and it had vegetables in it? which I have never seen egg drop soup to appear that way. I felt extremely heartbroken at the food we were served. This was the first time my boyfriend had been there and I was so excited to share this childhood place of mine, with him. My new home away from home. When I can't make it to my favorite downtown LA Chinese joints then this place is the next best option, hits so close to home with character, friendly service, and amazing Chinese food! When I say this place has character I mean it! Never would you guess your in downtown Oxnard, walking up the tall flight of stairs and seeing the cute individual rooms takes me back, totally reminiscent of San Fran or downtown LA. Old school feels for sure. I love the atmosphere here. Service: 5 stars. They remember me every time I come and are the friendliest people ever. I will always support their business and philosophy of making the customer feel at home. They're always attentive but not pushy, I never feel rushed. Everyone is great. Food: it's a mismatch of certain items being my all time favorite 5 stars but then a couple dishes I know I wouldn't order again... The favs! First off, start with the egg drop soup. Not very thick like some can be but this one has great flavor! Very tasty in the most simplistic way. Shrimp with Lobster Sauce: 5++++ stars. They best shrimp with Lobster sauce in all of Ventura county. They are the only one with the legit recipe that's thick & flavorful not watery like everyone else makes it. First time experience eating at this place. We went because a friend was reminiscing going there as a child and we were excited to try it out. The food wasn't too bad tasting. The reason for the one star, the service SUCKED and that's to put it lightly. The couple working didn't really speak English and was hard to order and understand them. The lady owner was just plain rude. There was no one dining in either. One of my friends asked for a straw and the owner just rolled her eyes. When taking her menu away, she just snatched it from the table. We thought we were being punked. We were scared to ask her for condiments because of the attitude. We've never been more uncomfortable eating at in establishment. The reason we didn't walk out was because our friend was really sad and still wanted us to give it a chance. Food is good but we got our rice at the end of our meal. The appetizers all came one after the other. I've been to other Chinese restaurants and get appetizers all at once. First time trying Golden Chicken Inn. We ordered chicken egg foo young, chicken chop suey, plain fried rice and vegetarian egg rolls. The egg foo young serving was large (three large patties with loads of sauce) and pretty tasty. The chicken chop suey serving was rather small (more like a lunch serving) with super thin, bland sauce. The plain fried rice and egg rolls were awesome. What used to be a true institution is now just average at best. The new managers changed the sweet and sour chicken wings meat from lollipop style to run of the mill drummette and wingettes. The spicing isn't the same, either. The sweet and sour sauce isn't the same on the s&s shrimp, which I can only assume is across the board. My parents have been coming since before I was born! And I have continued the tradition. I don't live in Ventura county anymore, but anytime I visit, it's a MUST stop. The BEST, most unique Chinese food I have EVER eaten. It's family style eating. The egg rolls are huge, and fantastic. Their original chow mien, ask for chicken, they use chicken breast slices. The sweet and sour chicken? Also chicken breast chunks, lightly breaded, not like most restaurants, where it's more breading than chicken. I can keep raving about each dish, but you should try it yourself! My best suggestion is to try one of their combo dinners. read more
