Found this place by chance heading for the F train after visiting the cemetery where my great grandparents are buried. We were looking for an adult beverage, but I can't pass up an empanada. I mean.... I CAN'T! The Colombian empanadas made with a corn meal base were different than what I was used to and they were fantastic!! There must be chickens somewhere laying golden eggs because Golden Chicken has got it made with their flavor. Anyone remember the Fable called "The Goose that Laid the Golden Egg?" Well if you do, the name of the restaurant kinda reminds me of that fable title, minus the Goose of course. The name actually triggered my taste buds and put me on to what I now describe as some of the best Peruvian chicken I've had thus far. Here goes another one of my favorites located in Hillside, Queens, Golden Chicken is what I would call a hidden gem that should be favored by more than some. Why only favored to some? Well, because to me it's very underrated and some would say the quality of the food has gone down and service can improve. From my experience the food is very good, but I do agree that the service can be better. Upon my last visit, I waited about 20 minutes (if not more) for my order and it was not as fresh as expected. However, my last visit won't deter me because sometimes one has to understand businesses do have off days. Even if the day is not so off for the business, it may just be the time of your visit that could make the experience not good as the other ones. For the most part the quality of the food here has good consistency. I am not sure why, but my last two times visiting Golden Chicken it appeared to me that their business sign has been removed. I almost missed the place driving because upon arrival it was not clear to me that I reached my destination when looking for the restaurant. As you know, if you visit any place a few times you start to remember the look of things and it's surroundings, but in this case I thought they closed down. The inside of the restaurant is dimly lit and small, but big enough to fit about two to three small tables for seating. They currently have seating available, but it is even more limited due to the pandemic. There is a big window to place your order with a menu sealed to it and alongside paper menus for grabs as well as a small bench to await takeout orders. Being that the lighting is not that good, I do recommend getting your food to go. Overall, the space is okay. On the other hand, if you are driving parking is quite fair with paid meter as long as it is during a time when spots are available. The chicken here is aaa-maaa-zinggg! It's rotisserie style with flavors that really pop, making you say...so that's what it's supposed to taste like. Yum! The skin on the chicken has a nice glaze to it, almost golden like it's glistening back at you. The meat is juicy and fresh, seasoned just as well as the skin. The inside is getting the same love as the outside in each bite on this bird. I always get a half chicken, preferably breast and wing with two side choices of golden rice and beans with sweet plantains. The rice is cooked well served with pinto beans, but be sure to ask for extra liquid from the beans if you want more boost in flavor. The plantains are very sweet and compliment the flavors of everything else in the dish adding a great sweetness to the savor from the chicken. No way can I forget to mention the green sauce also known as Aji Verde, which is spicy with hints of jalapeno, avocado, garlic, lime, cilantro, you have the idea right? It's so good, and a definite staple when it comes to Peruvian and other food dishes across the region. They offer so many other varieties to choose from ranging from steak to shrimp if you want to try other dishes. There are also a selection of sides to try in addition to the ones I mentioned. I highly recommend trying the chicken if you are going for the first time. If you want a little less than half, try a quarter chicken to see if you like it. Golden Chicken is my go to for Peruvian food that made me fall in love with rotisserie style chicken again. It's also another reason for me to visit Hillside Avenue in Jamaica, Queens. I used to order from Golden Chicken very often years back, but I stopped coming for a while because I was dissatisfied with the way the chicken was cooked -- well, rather, how undercooked it was. I decided to give Golden Chicken a try a few months back and again today and I have to say their service has improved. The male cashier at the front is very friendly, service itself was fast, and most importantly, my chicken was well cooked. I'm not sure if they've changed all of the staff, but Golden Chicken has improved compared to years before. If you ever feel too lazy to cook a meal for yourself, I suggest you order something from the individual combos menu. My go-to order is 1/4th or 1/2 chicken with two sides (choice of mashed potatoes, rice and beans, salad, french fries, fried yucca, or green/sweet plantains). Sunday night. This place was 2 blocks away so I called for a pick up order since it was only a 20 minutes wait compared to the 1 hour wait as delivery. Their phone cut off for the first 3 seconds after picking up then it connected again, which made me think I was hung up on at first, but I guess I was put on hold without notice. The female on the phone was very curt and repeated "anything else?" with an obviously impatient tone every sentence I spoke. Bad sign. Called in again in 10 minutes to switch the order to Delivery due to a disturbance at home and was unable to go pick it up. She insisted that it cannot be switched, but I apologized and said I literally live 2 blocks away and she finally conceded (with a stern rebuke) . Told her the address and apartment number #C and phone number. Asked to pay ahead with credit card, and she vehemently refused. Fine. I let it go and was willing to pay with cash on my end since I'm the one who made an abrupt change. 50 minutes later as we were patiently waiting for the food and is getting ever more so hangry, my SO called them to see what's up. Apparently they had gone ahead and canceled our order after a delivery attempt without telling us. Their delivery guy actually rung #D instead of #C, but failed to call us or make any attempt to communicate with us (why take my phone number if you're not going to call me?). Horrible customer service. I usually buy dinner here once a week and the women behind the counter were unprofessional. Placed an online order at 2:40pm and website said it would be ready at 3:15pm. I get there, they claim it's not ready. I leave and come back a few minutes later and they said I needed to wait 7 more minutes. I know that's a lot of starch but I couldn't decide on which one to try for the first time! The first bite into the chicken was marvelous! The Peruvian flavors were a burst of delight and joy. The skin had an enormous amount of flavor that took me back. This was the best chicken that I've had since Pio Pio 8 in Manhattan. The mashed potatoes were hot and seasoned well. The rice and beans were a great addition as well. I would recommend paying the extra money to get two pieces of dark meat instead of white meat due to the dark meat being very moist. Since this review I've ordered from here about five times and that was all I'm about a two week span! I'm addicted! I also tried my mother's garlic shrimp and that was very delicious as well. This place sucks... the main item they cook is rotisserie chicken and it's not all that good. I have had way better rotisserie from grocery stores... The customer service is terrible. The people barely look or speak to you when you come in to order, always have attitude and can't wait to charge extra for some little sauce, when you buy small orders like soup or mash potatoes, which should already be cooked, it takes them 20-25 mins before it's ready. My favorite item to order from any restaurant is calamari... I ordered this one day and when I got home it was rock hard and barely edible... I give the 2 stars because the soup is usually good on certain days(Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday) and the mash potatoes if I just need a side to go with food I made at home... but otherwise don't waste your time of money for horrible service and food that they just slap together with no consideration that someone actually paid for it. read more

When people are picking up orders they need to do a better job at verifying they are giving the person the right order. To be told my order was given to the wrong person by mistake and they would do it over but I would have to wait another 30-40 minutes is not acceptable. I understand the new normal based on the pandemic and new procedures. However, good customer service should still exist. So, this is my second visit to this place and it never seems to let me down. I love this Spanish food spot so much and it's so close to home which puts a big smile on my face! The location is easy to find and relatively busy. It's right off of the 179th street F train station and there are ample buses in the area. Parking can be a b* though because Hillside Ave has an annoying amount of bus stops and then there is metered parking and no parking zones. You may get lucky on the side streets, so give that a try. Inside of the location is clean but pretty small. Don't plan on having a large group for this place because it's not made for it, Decor is a bit confusing, they have a bit too much going on but this hasn't affected my scoring on this place one bit. Service and food is amazing which is the most important thing right? My family stopped on in and immediately took a seat. They don't have waiters or waitresses or hosts and hostesses, it's just a "take any seat" type of place. The guy and the counter brought us our menu, we looked over what we wanted, and then took our order. It was quick, average cook time, and the food was awesome. Very good serving size for all of us. The flavoring was on point, a little slang there for it was perfect. We all were happy with our food. I don't recall what I had on my first visit here but this time I had the personal 1/4 chicken with rice and beans and maduros. It was 8.49 for my dish, a great price. My husband's and kid's dish was also inexpensive. Our total bill was 36 bucks. Overall great place. Sooo this was my first time here wanted something yummy on a Friday night, had the garlic shrimp with white rice and two quarter chicken combos...let's talk price those three meals came up to $40 bucks ‍ for $40 bucks you expect better then good, this food was average if not below the beans looked almost grayish the rice had the taste of burnt bottom, like they burnt the bottom of the rice and tried to save the top only problem is that burnt flavor had already gone through out the rice. The chicken had a nice flavor but it was dry, the plantain were soggy, but on the bright side, the green sauce was yummy! So I'll say this maybe I caught them on a bad day but I expect professionalism from a professional establishment.
