Used to go here as a kid and the food quality just kinda downgraded. But recently I gave it a try again and WOW! I love it. They have some really good dishes, my favorite are the salt and pepper squid and small peas pod leaves with rice! So comforting! Fast service, they're not that busy though prob due to Covid. The dim sum though on the other hand is alright... it doesn't taste fresh to me. It taste like they just put it in the microwaved and warmed it up. read more

This is one of my favorite restaurants of all time. My family has been eating at Golden Harvest forever. I am 33 and they were going before my birth back at it's old location. I remember being 4 years old the very first time I saw my grandma gnawing away at a chicken foot. Almost all of our family memories revolve around dim sum at Golden Harvest. First, the staff is super friendly, warm and loving towards our family. The waitresses feel like my aunts. Second, the food is unreal- like get a tattoo of the menu on your back, unreal. When I'm in town, we go every day for lunch and order dim sum ala cart- whoa momma. Garlic chive dumplings, seafood roll, spicy squid, taro, BBQ steamed buns, beef bones, shrimp ball, and sesame balls are among our favorites. What an incredible restaurant! read more

A friend turned me on to this restaurant for dim sum. Food pretty decent. They advertise dim sum all day but if u go after a certain time it's a totally different experience. The selections are limited and they basically bring all the items out on one crowded plate like a TGIF app platter. With that being said I ate here with a friend a day ago. By 830p the dining room had cleared out we were the only ones left sitting quietly having after-dinner conversation and a HUGE RAT came running thru the dining room!!! I was told if you ever see a roach walk across your table its health inspection time this was a fat RAT so yeah decide for yourself. Came here today for dim sum around 12 p.m. It's my first dim sum experience in Michigan. Out of all the dim sum places I've ever eaten at, it's definitely not the worst. I read several reviews that stated if you're used to SF/LA dim sum, this place is a 2 and I agree with that sentiment. A lot of the steamed stuff was extra chewy but in terms of appearance, etc. it was typical dim sum faire. They had a few carts as well as some servers walking around with trays of food. You have to get up and pay for your meal by the front door register. No one comes to tally up the check for you. I can't comment on price as I don't pay or see our check. I docked off a star from my initial two star rating because there's one server there that's plain rude. I've been to a lot of Asian restaurants and I'm well aware that a warm, friendly server isn't what you normally get; however, this lady takes the cake. She was condescending and unpleasant when we told her we didn't want whatever she had on her tray. Then later on into our meal, we let our 18 month old play with the sugar packets at the table. She was enjoying herself and playing quietly, taking the individually sealed sugar packets out of the container and then carefully putting them back in. She wasn't throwing anything; she hadn't ripped anything open. Out of nowhere, the aforementioned server rushed toward my child and yanked the sugar packets out of her hand. When I tried telling the server we'd clean it all up after she was done playing with it, the server huffily replied, "Oh no no.." and continued to angrily grab all the sugar packets that my kid had been playing with. She then stuffed them back into the container and set them at another table without another word then walked away. It was the most bizarre, negative experience I've had in regards to dining out with my child and we've eaten at numerous places from hole in the wall to fine dining. It's extremely important to me that my child behaves appropriately (within reason of her age) and doesn't ruin other paying customers' dining experiences. Furthermore, if she makes a mess, I will clean it up right away or ask for a broom, etc. to clean it up. I view it as my child, my responsibility - not the server's. So with that in mind, it just blew me away that someone could be so pissed off that my kid was playing with the sugar packets. If we hadn't been eating with friends, I would've asked for the bill immediately and just left. This whole experience has left me with a sour taste and I'm not planning on returning anytime soon, if ever. A shame because the other servers were fine. read more

It is fairly authentic and they have a huge menu. And although it isn't strictly their fault, the place is huge and always feels abandoned when you are eating there. My roommate and a friend really like the food here, but it is pricey for Chinese. I have tried it twice and the second time I didn't even bother eating it and let my roommate take it home. Ugggggggh I'm so nauseated and grossed out. We had a discussion on if we should try and induce a bit of vomiting. I have eaten here many times and since Jess B likes Dim Sum, we decided to head over. We ordered about 5-6 standard dishes - steamed dumplings, Shuimai etc. The place has one other table and they finish 1/2 through our meal. A few minutes later a party of 3 come in sit down. I'm asking Jess what she thinks of the place, and out of the corner of my eye I see something very large run under the table. I assume it is a cat and say that "Awww look! A cat". Jess looks over and says "Oh my god! That is a rat". We see it run around the room and I'm thinking Yelp picture but my phone is dead and that isn't a nice thing to do but really its because my phone is dead. We then see it run up through the bar. This sucker is big. We are now so grossed out with thoughts racing through our head and want to leave. As we start walking to the register, the guy at the other table says "you know is good when rats are that size". We go to the counter to pay and the manager apologizes and says "I need to call them again to take care of this".....AGAIN? It's just too much for me to come back. I know things happen, I just had too many thoughts about open containers at night to come back. read more

I've been to Golden Harvest a few times now. Every time I've been, I am more impressed. There isn't a better Chinese restaurant in Macomb county for my money (maybe not in the whole state). As Dea mentioned, the dim sum here is something special. I've only had it once, but when I tell people about Golden Harvest - I always say, "the dim sum rules!" I love that, unlike most Chinese restaurants, there are strong, authentic Chinese flavors present in most of the dishes. Tonight, for example, I had the house special stir fry, or some dried fish, squid, carrots, garlic chives, and long beans in a soy/garlic sauce. The dried fish were crispy, like little fish chips. The squid was nice & tender, although they could've put some more in the dish. The veggies were all very fresh and the portion size was HUGE. Additionally, the hot & sour soup was both sour and had a good amount of heat (imagine that). And since we ordered more than $50 worth of food, the "anniversary special" is an order of soy chicken for $1. I didn't eat much of this chicken, but it was a STEAL for $1. Bone in chicken breast with skin on that had been braised in soy sauce for a dollar? Come on - how could anyone turn that down? My only problem with the dish is that I like my chicken skin more crisp, but whatever - it was a dollar! Seriously, this place is great. The menu is very extensive, so feel free to explore as much as you'd like. However, I can wholeheartedly recommend the house special stir fry and the walnut shrimp, for what its worth! I have been here several times. Dim Sum is good but all the other dishes are just okay. For me the place is a little unsanitary to be a restaurant. When we visited there, the carpets emit some old moldy smell, several tables remained uncleaned until we left the restaurant even if there only two patrons there. Also note that if you use Groupon, the restaurant will charge you for everything including a mandatory 20% tip/gratuity on your original bill no matter if you have a party of 2. I give between 15-20% tip when I eat outside but I did not pay this mandatory gratuity just on principle because the server insisted that it is part of my final bill. Moreover, all the complimentary things that they give you for free as a regular guest is gone. You will be charged with everything even for complimentary tea. read more

I've never been here for their Sunday lunch carts - only during the week because I work really close by. I've been here about 4 times, and it's only gotten progressively worse. First of all, while their sign say: "Dim Sum Everyday," it's actually a limited menu during the week, (with the full menu on Sundays?). The first time I went, I had never had dim sum before, so I thought it was the coolest thing ever, but since then, I discovered this place is actually the worse. Shangri-La is MUCH better - go there if you want dim sum at a great atmosphere and friendly fast service. Anyhow, beyond the limited dim sum menu (a third of the stuff I point to on the menu is either "we're out" or "we don't offer this during the week"), the place stinks. Like literally, their food is incredibly smelly, which I don't understand why, because I AM Chinese, and growing up - the food never smelled like that. The place is also dirty. When you walk in, there's these two lawn furniture couches, with stained dirty cushions. The place itself is falling apart on the outside with the outdoor roof area literally broken in many areas and some dirty old rugs. The eating area is okay, but the place never gets filled up because it's so large (I think it used to be a funeral home? not sure though). Their dumplings are really greasy and flavorless, with smelly cabbage inside. My favorite dessert dim sum buns are never available during the week, and oh I almost forgot - the server is really pushy with the food. She sits there impatiently and keeps telling you to try dishes you don't want. She also yelled at me for not understanding her Chinese (she must be from a different region because I couldn't get over her accent, I'm from Beijing). Anyways, I would recommend not going here. I started going here as an alternative to fast food at lunch because they have take-out, but after painfully slow service for dim sum take-out, I gave up. Plus the last time literally made me sick with their greasy dumplings. I'm giving this place 2 stars because I think their dim sum, atmosphere, cleanliness, and service sucks, but I haven't tried their full dinner menu, or the Sunday dim sum, so it could be better than what I experience during the week. read more

I only order off the Chinese menu for dinner, so I can't comment on the dim sum. The food is a hit or miss (I think depends on the chef of the day, look for an elderly Asian man because he is good), but the staff and management here are always rude and thoughtless. I came here one day with a large group, and we spent almost $200. When I looked at the bill, I was appalled that they had charged for tea. On prior visits, tea had always been free. It's hot water and some cheap tea leaves, for goodness sake. I brought up this discrepancy with the manager and instead of taking it off the bill, she was adamant that they "always charge for tea." Firstly, I know that is a lie. Secondly, the customer is always right. It was very thoughtless of her to fight with such a large group over a measly $5 charge. Because of this, we all left with a sour taste and will likely not return. On a separate day, I paid less than 20% and a different manager confronted me to "pay more." Excuse me, but you can't harass your customer to giving you extra tip when it wasn't warranted. Tipping doesn't even exist in Asia!!!! Golden harvest needs to realize that this isn't China anymore; you need to treat your paying customers with more respect, gratitude and not lie blatantly to our faces. I have never had blander Almond Boneless Chicken, it was served with a generic brown gravy better suited for Egg Foo Young so that couldn't save the dish. It made the bland chicken inedible. Under-stuffed and under-seasoned crab rangoon. Soups were bland, we tried egg drop and hot and sour, both inedible. The egg rolls were okay but not great. I will not be back. read more

I was excited that the UYE was here for dim sum. This was my 1st time @ Golden Harvest. I really wanted to see if they had pork buns comparable to my Joi's homemade ones. I have been to restaurants in Windsor and the like for dim sum, and this place was seriously like asian overload for me. I think they picked up on the fact that I wasn't like them. They sensed it. Good tea. I ate the hell out of the steamed pork buns! Excellent! Close to Joi's which is pretty damn good! Pork dumplings were good. The sticky rice wrapped in the tea leaves was yummy... not the best, but good. Shiu Mai was delish! If nothing else, go and order some pork buns =) [Dear pork buns, if you're reading this: I'm hooked on you. I need a fix. It's like you're a drug. It's like you're a demon I can't face down....] Restaurant itself: leaves a little to be desired. Nothing spectacular. Nothing special. I gotta agree with Kathy here! AHHHH... Golden Harvest saves our crave for Dim Sum in the Detroit area! I am from Hong Kong (where Dim Sum is from) and so finding a good authentic Dim Sum place around here has been a quest. After a good amount of disappointment, it was a thrill to find this place! Their style of Dim Sum is traditional and the dim sum here has the taste resembling a local old-school joint in Hong Kong. Not the posh, modern kind but the kind where you can find a lot of elderlies going after their Tai Chi practice. So their style of 'Haa Gao', 'Cheung Fun' and 'Cha Siu Bao' could be a little doughy for the modern taste; but some of the traditional Dim Sums are even rarer in Hong Kong nowadays - such as 'Wu kok' and 'Nap Cheung' Roll. I've been there twice so far, each time the quality of the dim sums are consistent and good! When my parents came to visit, we chatted with the owner and the chef and actually got to know which part of Hong Kong they were from and where the chef used to work. I've tasted Dim Sum in Europe and in other parts of the U.S. and I must say for an out-of-Hong Kong Dim Sum experience, that was a pleasant surprised. read more

Ordered a large array of items to try and felt most were sub par quality, the sausage buns, possibly may not even be meat. It seemed like purple/dark red jelly with maybe meat filler? So gross and so weird. The pork and veggie buns apparently also have shrimp in them which isn't listed on the menu and my fiancé who's allergic had fun with that (insert sarcasm here), the garlic and chive dumplings were tolerable but the chives were cut into strings so it's difficult to chew and choking occurs easily, the bbq pork buns were disgusting, again I'm not sure it was real meat inside and the thick wet bun is what I imagine a cloud in the Mario game tastes like. In my professional opinion, there are only two places in Metro Detroit you can go for Dim Sum, here and Shangri-La. I have a preference for Shangri-La by a HAIR, but this is mostly due to nostalgia and I love seeing all my Jews when I go there on Christmas Day. Golden Harvest always has a wide variety of Dim Sum, and the carts are always flying so if you don't see what you want at first they will be happy to look around for you. Also - Saturday's, all Dim Sum are $3 - not sure of the hours you may want to check. I can always count on being seated quickly when I come. I have been saying for years that I am going to have my wedding here. It really has it all - great food, large bar area, and a NIGHT CLUB downstairs. I've gone here so many times... I'm Asian and every time there's a really big group of us, this is the place we usually go to. We sometimes have our weddings here as well. The place is very large and has a lot of seatings. It's also open late which is convenient. Everytime I go there, we always order from the back of the menu... it has a list of like thirty dishes. If you get 2 dishes, it's about 19, and each addition dish is nine more dollars. I'm a pescatarian (eat seafood and veggies only) so I usually get the deep fried spicy salted squid and the broiled tilapia both of which are great!!! I love the dim sum as well. When I looked at yelp for Chinese food around my area, I was intrigued by the mixed reviews Golden Harvest got so I decided to check it out for myself. I passed by this establishment several times a week without even taking a second look. When I pulled in the parking lot this time around, there was a creepy feeling that came over me having read that this place WAS a converted funeral parlor. The interior was dim and not well lit. There were a LOT of tables with only about 2 or 3 tables with customers when I came. I was given the menu and quickly learned that the food here is a little bit expensive compared to the other Chinese restaurants I frequent. I ordered General Tso'c Chicken and a pork bun from the dim sum menu seeing that some yelpers rave about it. When both my orders came it was VERY sub par. The General Tso's Chicken was made with RED sauce that I am still convinced was ketchup-based, though I must admit that the green pepper did taste good with it -- so much more than I can say about the chicken. I did, after all, ordered a General Tso's CHICKEN and not General Tso's GREEN PEPPERS! Though the entree portion was generous, the white (though I specifically ordered FRIED) rice was a SMALL cup-full. I'm guessing there would be a 7 to 1 proportion between the entree and the rice. NOT my style. As an Asian myself, I LOVE my rice. The pork bun was EXTREMELY dry for something that was supposed to be STEAMED! I would rather have the pre-package, 4-piece pork or chicken buns sold at any Asian store in the area for much the same price. All in all I was EXTREMELY disappointed. I pride myself on experiencing everything at least once in my lifetime and if I like it, I will do it again, if not, at least I can shrug it off and say I've tried. Came here on Christmas Day with my extended family from Troy/Madison Heights area and was pleasantly suprised with the full weekend dim sum selection that was available. Haven't had dinner here in a while, so can't comment on the traditional dishes there, but dim sum is classic, good and delicious. Had the full variety of dim sum selections. Stand outs included the salt and pepper squid (my wife would probably eat an entire plate on her own!) the wu kok as it was fresh and hot, and the deep fried seafood roll with shrimp and scallops were golden brown and delicious! All the other items were consistent and fresh, with the only blah item being the congee. They didn't have one of my favorites, egg tarts, but it happens. Har kow and shu mai were done well and didn't disappoint. The less I am able to go to places like Golden Harvest and East Lake as I get older and live farther away from them make me appreciate the tradional items just a little more. I think if there were any decent dim sum options within 15 minutes of my home in Canton, my wife and I would probably go and eat salt and pepper squid every weekend. read more

I'd say 3.5 on the star. I haven't been back here in maybe two months, but over the past year I've done maybe 6 visits, all for dim sum lunch. Four of those solo sit in, and two carry out. They have all the standard issue items, so I can't really add much to that. Nice and open with lots of seating. Sitting solo It's hard to get good cart traffic, even after they notice i'm a big solo eater. I usually get anything I like from the carts first visit, and just take my time. The pork dumplings are amazing and so are the shrimp balls. Close second is the bbq pork buns. There aren't many places in Michigan where you can have Dim Sum so this place has found its niche. The dim sum is usually a miss, once in a while a hit. The place is only worth going when it's busy for dim sum when they walk around with the carts. But when this occurs, they never fail to not make enough food and I'm always waiting forever for food. The dim sum - well usually tastes a little past it's prime and just not good enough. My family will be appalled at this review, because it's their go-to place, but I think it's slipped. Dim Sum today wasn't as fresh-tasting, had more grease, the shrimp dumplings weren't really delicate, the law mai gai (lotus leaf wrapped sticky rice with chicken/sausage) seemed like it hadn't been done with real care, the ha cheung (shrimp in a rice wrapper) had a wrapper that was too thick and too glutinous, with shrimp that tasted over-cooked, and other dishes weren't really rocking it today. Uh oh. It was better last time I was here; maybe it was just an off day. I hope so. Oh Golden Harvest how you are my savior when it comes to Dim Sum in metro Detroit....and Detroit. I came here on a weekday after the carts have stopped rolling around at 2pm. It was pretty darn empty and I was eating by myself. (which is sooo difficult with dim sum) It's great because even though there are no more carts you can still order it off the menu. I think coming at this time I also got better quality dim sum because it wasn't so crowded. Everything is on par with the dim sum places I've eaten at in San Francisco. Granted I always get certain dishes, so your favorites or go tos may not be like mine. I got the braise chicken feet, fried taro and meat dumpling, ham soy gaw...(i know i'm not spelling anything right), beef steamed rice rolls, and har gow. Ordinarly I would order more things, but being without a buddy to eat it's more than I can handle. One day I'll try and convince my husband's palate that real Chinese food is better than the Americanized version, but until then I'll be coming back for more for sure!..... solo :( read more

I've past by this place several time since my boyfriend's family lives down the street, but never ventured to try it out. We finally stopped by one gloomy Saturday afternoon when I was hankering for some dim sum. Overall, it was ok. Nothing spectacular and I wasn't amazed with anything. The skin to the har gow was a bit doughy and most of the food was cold. I did like the shu mai, though. Service was friendly, but I think it helps when you speak the language. I did find it weird that I had to take the ordering check up to the cashier. Usually I would do that if the wait staff are busy or if the place is a bit more low-key, but never at a dim sum place. read more

Every time my bf and I make it to Michigan to visit his parents, we make the 40ish minute trek to Golden Harvest. The food is always delicious and the service is good. It's average priced at about $10-12 per dish. Everything that you might want on a Chinese menu is there, plus some. My bf's parents call it "more authentic than most" Chinese restaurants. I guess that's good too, right? It's worth a visit. It's a huge restaurant and unless it's a holiday, you can always get a seat without much of a wait. read more

I've been wanting to check this place out for awhile. Most of the food here was great, I only had issues with the stir fried beef ribs they were more bones than meat and it was swimming in fat/oil. Anywho this place was great I'm bias because it's my first dim sum restaurant. I went during the week so it was slow it is very busy on the weekends. RAT INFESTED PLACE. Avoid at all cost!! My family and I decided to stop here for dinner on a Friday night and the place was dead. The restaurant is huge but there were only two other customers the whole time we were there. Despite being a slow night, our waitress, an older Asian lady was very unfriendly and did not seem to want to be bothered. The food was nothing to brag about. In the middle of dinner, we saw 2 large rats chase each other across the floor. I immediately lost my appetite. This place is unsanitary. I can't even begin to imagine what is crawling around there in the kitchen. This place should be closed!!!! read more

Probably a west coast three, but definitely a Michigan four. I've been coming here since I was kid, so my opinions are likely biased. Definitely come here for the Dim Sum experience, especially during the peak hours. It's madness, it's packed, and it's a lot of fun. Order your usual dim sum favorites: shrimp dumplings, pork and shrimp sui mai, turnip cake, glutinous rice, etc. For non-dim sum fare, get the some traditional Cantonese family dishes like salt/pepper squid, imperial pork chop, steamed fish, special fried chicken, 8 treasures clay pot, beef hot plate, and if it's a special occasion, get the ginger & green onion lobster. Never tried the Americanized Chinese food (like General Tsou's) so I cannot comment on that. read more

My low rating of this restaurant has nothing to do with Covid limitations. This was the first time we ordered from here and while my boyfriend was able to eat his meal I couldn't even eat mine. The fried rice was greasy, what I thought would be almond boneless chicken was a horrible greasy and flavorless dish.
