Golden Horse is one of my favourite restaurants in Portland. The staff are friendly and the food is excellent. On our most recent visit, we had green beans, vegetable chow fun, and crab. Call a day ahead to get crab when it's in season. You have a choice of many preparations. I've tried several, and they were all excellent. The crab is pre-cracked, so you only need to do a little work to get the delicious meat from the shell. I like chow fun, but not when all the noodles are stuck together. Theirs is prepared perfectly. The green beans were cooked just enough so that they were still crispy. I use little salt in my own cooking, and these were seasoned to my liking - not too salty. Support the last Chinese restaurant in Chinatown. There's a parking lot right across the street. It's owned by a local family who take real pride in the food they serve. I will happily return when I'm in Portland again. read more

My group of 6 came in for dinner on 3/20 after playing Mahjong at the Lan Su Chinese Garden. I had to confess I only came here twice since 2021 only at the insistence of friends for two reasons, and it's not for the quality of food: supporting downtown businesses and nostalgia. I found their food mostly on the salty and soggy side for my taste. For this visit, the green beans were over cooked and salty, the honey shrimp walnut had more breading than I expected and no flavor at all on the shrimp. I did enjoy the Japanese soft tofu option since it's bigger cut of the soft silky tofu like small red potato side instead of the typical tiny cubes. Service friendly since two of our friends know the owner and speak the language. I was glad to see they got busy during peak dinner hours on a Friday's night. It's a solid choice whenever you're in the are but I don't recommend going out of your way for it. read more

This is the last Chinese restaurant in Chinatown. Yes. The last. Like the final boss in a video game. They've been holding it down for 25+ years, which alone deserves a standing ovation and maybe a parade. Service? Pleasant. Prompt. No chaos. No drama. Just people who know exactly what they're doing. Old-School Charm, The décor has an old-school, unfussy charm, nothing trendy or over-the-top, just familiar and comfortable, like a place that's confident it doesn't need to show off. Parking is classic city-style: street parking (Parking Kitty/Pay Station) or a lot literally across the street on 4th. Translation: you have no excuse not to eat here. Now let's talk about the food....because WOW. The sautéed green beans? Outstanding. Life-changing. Bean enlightenment. Garlic, a few other veggies, and some kind of magic. I would happily drive across town just to eat a plate of these green beans and reconsider every vegetable I've ever disrespected. And then... the CRUNCHY Salt & Pepper Tofu. OOOOOO EEEEMMM GEEEEEE. Let me say it again for the people in the back: CRUNCHY. SALT. &. PEPPER. TOFU. Perfectly crispy, insanely flavorful, and so good that it shocked me, because I am not a tofu person. There's plenty of street parking for $3 an hour plus 50cents service fee. Max 2 hours parking. Came on a weekday for their lunch special. Lunch special dishes were $11.95 each Monday through Friday from 11AM to 3PM. We were the only table. We ordered the 宫保雙丁 or Kung Pao Chicken & Shrimp, 龫扁四季豆 or Sautéed Green Bean, and 蒙古牛肉 or Mongolian Beef. The dishes came with Soup of the Day, Egg Roll, BBQ Pork, Fried Rice & Tea. The Soup of the Day was the standard Hot and Sour Soup. It tasted pretty good. The Egg Roll tasted handmade and went well with the dipping sauce. The BBQ Pork was stiff, but tasted alright. The fried rice tasted alright. It had soy sauce, little bits of BBQ Pork, and eggs. We were surprised to be served fried rice since this was our first time being served soy sauced rice instead of white rice at a Chinese restaurant. The tea took a bit to get used to. All the dishes were very salty. The portions were big and we definitely finished our rice, but not the dishes. They open Christmas Day and New Year Day. The place was dated, but the food was cheap. The service was great, but we were the only table. We saw many people coming in and out for take out though. Would probably not come back as we felt it was way too salty. read more

We had our food delivered so I cannot speak to the friendliness of the staff or cleanliness of the restaurant. We ordered the Boiled Chicken, BBQ Pork and Beef Chow Fun with Bean Sprouts. The food was ready and delivered on time. The boiled chicken was huge, juicy and flavorful. The sauce complimented the chicken well and wasn't overpowering. Do you know why this place has the best Chinese food in old town Chinatown? Because at the time of this review, it is the only Chinese restaurant left in old town Chinatown (and it's really good, so let's support them!) Start with the green beans and potstickers. Don't forget the green beans. I sometimes get a little overwhelmed with Chinese menus because I don't really know what everything is. This time I learned about fun noodles. Google says, "Fun noodles is a common term for ho fun (or he fen), which are wide, flat rice noodles popular in Cantonese cuisine. The most famous dish using these is Beef Chow Fun, a dry stir-fry." The server guided me to get beef chow fun. The noodles were slippery and chewy and the sauce was savory and smoky and I really loved it. It was a huge portion and I got to eat it for lunch the next day too. Get down here and support them so they'll stay. When you go to Chinatown, what do you expect to find? Good Chinese food. The outside of this restaurant was decorated enough to draw my attention. The inside decor was quite bland. Dull pink, with the plates and utensils on a table in the dining room. So I was not impressed by the interior. The service was good. They had everything that Americans would expect to find on a Chinese food menu. They also had some things that we would consider strange. The customers were mostly Asian so they were traditional Asian dishes. I got General Tzo's Chicken. It was not the best I've had but it's not the worst I have had but not the best either. Yet again the best Chinese in the city. Asked what the fresh veggie today was an was told green beans. I have never eaten such a delicious green bean in my life. Gluten free review: If your in old China town I would definitely stop by the golden horse! The food is absolutely fabulous! They are very knowledgeable with gluten free. I had the tofu with shrimp on top, bok choy with shrimp, and a bowl of rice. It was Devine! They brought a nice hot tea to the table. So... delicious. It was so flavorful and cooked to perfection. When we went, there was a school field trip that they were catering to, and still managed to get to us quickly. Not that that was expected but they were very efficient. We are here for the first time last night. Friggin delicious! We had the pot sticker appetizer , 8 large potstickers served with a tasty dipping sauce. We split the chicken with green onion and ginger. The chicken was tender and flavorful and there were big chunks of ginger in it that gave it a beautiful aroma and taste. The service was great, the meal came with lots of hot tea which was really nice due to it being cold and rainy out. Oh and a cup of hot and sour soup! Listen, this place was great. Please go. We went to Golden Horse for a Mid-Autumn Festival celebration event with Stumptown Otaku. It was so lovely and homey to sit down with strangers and eat family style, grabbing our food off of lazy Susans, taking individual soup dishes after the waitress poured them. The food was amazing! Their take on lo mai gai stuffed in a chicken was so unique and sooo good! It was both crispy on the outside and sticky on the inside. It's sad to hear this is the last Chinese restaurant in Chinatown, and I hope it never closes down. The food is phenomenal and the waitstaff were lovely. They speak Cantonese, too! Why is it that when I come here, the food is always amazing? This restaurant has been here forever. If you've never been here before, I'd suggest coming for lunch with friends, after visiting the Chinese Garden (a block away) This Chinatown District has it's ups and downs, but this restaurant still keeps people coming, because it is that good. If you're a Chow Fun diehard, ask for your favorite Chow Fun. Beef Chow Fun is amazing because the beef is so incredibly tender. If you are a vegan, and want to explore interesting food, I suggest the Lotus Root with Black Fungus. It's delicate and tender. Hot Pot lovers, check out your favorite Hot Pot here, and you will be convinced that this restaurant deserves a shout out. My favorite Hot Pot is Crispy Tofu with Cod. Planning on a banquet? There's plenty of room here. Pre-order from the banquet menu, including their stuffed chicken, a specialty of the house. Easy parking? We came here because we needed a place for a group dinner while we were in the area. The first red flag was when we ordered fried wontons. In a hushed voice, the waitress advised that we might not like them. It turns out that their wontons are geared for tourists and are not prepared in the traditional manner. They have no filling. We ordered a number of other dishes. We had the fish maw with crabmeat soup, chicken bao with lettuce, a seafood combination pot, honey glazed walnut shrimp, pepper and salt spare ribs, Buddhist delight, dry sauteed string beans and a house special chow mein. In general, they were prepared in a very basic manner and tasted ok, although they were a little greasy. Golden Horse is not a fancy restaurant, just a very basic, old, Chinatown establishment. Several hours later, unfortunately, three of the people in our party experienced food poisoning. Next time, we'll be going to the Moroccan place down the street. read more

I was a little on the fence since some of the reviews were mixed - but I saw one that said they had been coming for 20 years so I knew I had to give it a shot. Haven't been to PDX downtown since the Pandemic began. Wow, the homeless have doubled and it was already bad 3 years ago. Portland needs to revitalize the Old Town waterfront area like Vancouver did. All of the West Coast Chinatowns have declined because of the migration of Chinese to the suburbs and more recently, anti-Asian hate crimes. Unfortunately, Portland Chinatown is the worst on the west coast. It's really sad to see it. :-( I got take out 1/2 Peking duck, Mongolian beef and pot stickers and here is how it scored... Peking duck: well it was Cantonese roast duck, not Peking duck. 3/5 Pot Stickers: kind of greasy with average taste. 3/5 Mongolian Beef: this was a decent dish but overly saucy. 4/5 Golden Horse unfortunately epitomizes the decline of Portland Chinatown. But if this is the best downtown Portland has to offer per the other reviews, then I'm gonna go outside of DT to find better. Not worth even a quarter of the $54 + tip/fee I paid. All food was overcooked - even the BBQ pork in the fried rice could be visually seen as overcooked. You know it's bad when my meat-eating boyfriend thought the best dish was the Vegetable Combination dish with the tofu. We have a ton left and will be throwing all of it away. At least they served white rice for free with it, though, plus 5 fortune cookies, but the rest of this hot mess is going in the trash. I would not give this place zero stars if I could, though, because at least it was provided quickly and was still warm upon delivery. read more

They're still open for take-out!! I've been coming here for around twenty years (that's crazy and makes me sound old...) so clearly it's worth coming back to! The staff is very nice and provides good service. The food is very good and very consistant. They have a large menu so even after two decades I still haven't tried everything but I definitely have favorites. My favorite noodles are the beef chow fun and the crispy noodles with chicken. They make a very nice Peking duck - the style that comes with the buns, not the thin wrappers. The steamed whole fish and whole sweet and sour fish are great. For the ceramic pots, the salted fish and chicken, and the five spice beef brisket are both delish - though the first is a bit of an acquired taste. If you like really authentic food, check out their white board for specials. I just found an amazing dish that I haven't found anywhere else in Portland - though maybe it's also on someone else secret menu: crispy chicken stuffed with sticky rice (ngai mai gai?). It's a whole fried chicken stuffed with sticky rice (like the type inside the dim sum Lo mai gai - sticky rice in lotus leaf). It's a specialty and probably tough to fry a whole chicken so they need at least a day's notice. Same with a few of the other fancier dishes, particularly if it's a holiday. If you hoping for really spicy Chinese food, you've got the wrong place. You'd be looking for more Szechuan or hunan style food. This place is more Cantonese style which is less spicy. But, if you're looking for goo Chinese food here is your place. read more
