To say she was thrilled to the moon and back is an understatement-so when her birthday rolled around in December,I picked up three more gift certificates from Golden Island Massage. She loved her birthday gift just as much. So now every year on Mother's Day and her birthday in December I pick her up three gift certificates and the six total pretty much cover her massage needs for the entire year. It's perfect and the stress of gift giving someone who has everything has forever been solved. As far as the purchasing process, it's pretty simple. I generally just drive to their spot-they have ample parking as they are in a very busy shopping center anchored by Target and many other businesses. Once inside,the helpful employees fill out old-school gift certificates and I throw them in a card and give them to my mother-easy peasy!! I wanted to give 4 stars since my 60 minute massage with hot stones really softened my tense muscles and got me relaxed, but I have a few issues. 1) pay first - $55 + 2 credit card fee for 60 minute massage in a private room and table. I opted to give the tip at the end. 2) upon entering my room, the sheets were damp so I felt a bit cold. If anything the sheets to lay in and drape over you should've been dry. Freshly warmed sheets and a heated table are even better. 3) the lady sneezed a few times in the room and even though my eyes were closed I don't think she sanitized her hands. Thankfully at this point, the drape was on me so she didn't touch my skin after sneezing. 4) although I walked out relaxed and the massage therapist got some knots out, about an hour later, my upper back felt a new kind of pain and feels out of adjustment. She adjusted me towards the end and I didn't expect that. I don't think they're supposed to do that. She was nice and the hot stones were great but the few details such as damp sheets, sneezing without disinfecting your hands. read more

The massage therapists talk to each other in very loud "whispers" and you can hear everyone speaking loudly in the reception area. This makes it hard to fully relax. I needed a quick massage today (NYE) and stopped by Golden Island Massage. $30 for 30 minute chair massage and $10 tip. It's not actually a chair, it's a bed that has the hole for your face. You are clothed and they cover you. It is not a private room, there are about 8 beds in a row two feet apart from each other. It was a wonderful 30 minutes. Head, neck, shoulders, arms, trunk, glutes, legs, feet and hands. And they have the chair massage plus foot massage for $45. plus tip. It's really great when you don't have a lot of time, and for those who prefer to leave their clothes on. They are pretty much one depth.. deep tissue. LOL. He did ask me if I was ok, and I was, so maybe you can ask for a softer touch. This is not like buying a burger at your favorite steakhouse, it's like a nice charburger at the Habit. This place has 10/10 customer service! They are very kind and attentive to you. Compared to some of the places I've been, the staff at Golden Island spa are very gracious. I accidentally scheduled a massage with them, because I chose the first golden island massage in Google. I meant to schedule with the one in Napa (not affiliated) and Lily was so understanding about the mix up even though I was in the middle of an hour massage and wasn't able to get back to her for an hour after her message. I recently moved to Napa from Vallejo and have had massages at Golden Island, but it has been awhile. From what I recall the staff is knowledgeable in reflexology and you will absolutely leave feeling refreshed and ready to take on the world. I went here yesterday and it was awful for a lot of reasons. I've been here before so I know they want you to pay first, which is fine. I came for a one hour full body massage so I got settled in for that. The masseuse was alright, but I didn't like that she was using her elbows so much. It really hurt and I let her know. She lightened up a bit but still continued to use her elbows. Then I heard someone open the door WHILE I'M IN THE MIDDLE OF MY MASSAGE and start talking to my masseuse. I heard the door open and close a few times and later found out they switched masseuses in the middle of my massage. I wasn't aware of this until I was leaving and I'll explain why. Going back to my massage, the second lady continues and then her phone starts ringing super loud and she answers it while massaging me! Turns out, my second lady was the receptionist who checked me in and she was answering their business line, because she was asking the person who called if they wanted to make an appointment. That was so annoying. Lastly, when she had me flip over at the end, she massaged my face which was horrible. She slathered a bunch of oil everywhere, some even got in my mouth. And she was flopping her hands on my face, not particularly pleasant for a face massage specifically. I probably should have told her I don't want the face, so my fault for that. Then when I was leaving I gave the receptionist $5, cause I was so disappointed in my service. She goes, "Can you give another $5 since two people massaged you? I have to split the tip." Um okay I didn't know two people massaged me until just now! I said this is all the cash I have so she pulls out my receipt for my service and said here you can add the tip on your card and she made sure I tipped $10 so it could be split between the two of them. I've been to this massage place a few times . I went to get a foot massage and the guy that did it wasn't really doing a good job like I usually get. You have to pay before service as I did . When I was leaving out the man proceeded to show me my receipt and I couldn't really understand what he was saying. Other customers started to tell me that I need to pay . In complete embarrassment I showed the other customers my receipt and explained I did pay . The guy then picks up another customer receipt and point to the tip line and asks me why I'm not leaving him a tip like the other customer did !!!!!!! I know from experiences at places like this that they pull the sheet covering you to above your hips but for some reason they removed them all the way off of us and I quickly pulled it back up. I chose a woman for a reason, I am not saying that he saw my body but if it was just women in there I wouldn't have cared. For women going through sensitive situations that could be alarming. On a midweek rainy night, My friends and I decided to spontaneously go for a massage. Without an appointment, I called to check for two one hour massages, and the place took us in immediately. We were greeted at the door by the lady clerk, and quickly sheltered from the storm outdoors. Soon as we got settled, she introduced us to their special: 30 minutes foot reflexology and 30 minutes full body massage for $35 each. Not a bad deal! My friend and I were ushered in to a large dimly-lit adjoining room with neat rows of foot massage recliners. There was soft spa music playing and it was fairly quiet. My friend and I were seated side by side, and we were designated a male masseuse each who set our tired feet under warm tubs of water. Then, our limbs were applied deep tissue massage. No worries there, my limbs melted like butter under hand pressure. After the foot reflexology, we were then ushered to an adjacent room with rows of massage tables. My friend and I had side by side massage tables where our necks, backs and arms were massaged again with deep tissue pressure. I've been coming here for years, and I used to get their massages once a month. I loved them, and they always did amazing work on me. I never had a problem with getting massages from a guy or girl. That being said, these past couple times, weren't so great that I don't think I'll be coming back ever again. Let me explain what I experienced. The last time I went was in March of this year, where I received a massage from a guy. Being that I've come every month for the past more than few years, I know what the massages are supposed to feel like, that they work on each time. This particular day they had a guy work on me. As you know, you're supposed to be undressed when you go into the separate room. The way he massaged me didn't feel like a massage. He was working on my back and lifted my shoulder up high enough for me to be exposed. I was pushing my body down so he wouldn't see. This was never part of the massage. Not just once, but twice. He massaged my thigh a little too high for my comfort. But never touched me anywhere. I just felt exposed and violated. After the massage, he said to ask for him. I left and talked with my friends about it. They told me to ask for a woman next time. I wanted to come back and say something but I didn't remember his name. Yesterday, I went back. I told the receptionist that I would like a hot stone massage, with a half an hour foot massage with a girl. Then I proceeded to tell her why I had a preference for a woman. She recommended Andy for my feet, and Amy for the full body massage. She had told me Andy and Amy were really good. So, I believed her. I went and laid down on the massage table for when you're getting a foot massage. Andy spent the first 10 minutes talking with someone through my massage and I had my suspicions so I checked the time on my watch. Although, I paid for a half hour foot massage, I had only received 20 minutes of it. They normally flip you over and give you a small head, shoulder, and back massage along with it. I appreciated it and had fallen asleep. He woke me up to go to the massage room, where I met Amy. She started me by facing into the hole on the massage bed. She applied a lot of pressure around my neck, and asked me if I wanted "soft or firm." I replied "soft." She dug her elbow into my spine, and had put a lot of pressure down onto my back. I jolted, and she laughed. "Too firm?" I told her yes, and she proceeded to be soft again. She removed the cover I had over me to work on my legs, and put a hand towel between my legs to cover my private area. She asked me if I wanted a hot stone massage. I responded "yes." She covered me with the flat blanket before leaving. Then when she came back, she threw it on the ottoman holding my clothes. I guess they were really hot for her, so she proceeded to tightly squeeze the skin of my back with hot stone rocks, not even asking me if the temperature was alright. After about 5 minutes, she took them off of me and had me flip over. She covered me again. She proceeded to massage my head, and then stick her finger inside of my ears, and right after, massaged my face. When they pat you to symbolize that the massage is done, normally they do it softly but firm enough to wake you up. Amy proceeded to smack me hard, and it hurt. I was awake the entire time because she had not listened to what my preferences were. I was not appreciative of the massage. I can understand if she was new. But I trusted the receptionist's word that they were good. If you've been here, they ask you for tips after the massage. It was never a problem to me, I always paid the tip along with the request to make things easier for me to leave. I left without saying a word, and I've writing this now to help you save time and money. To the receptionist, I didn't feel comfortable telling you what happened because Amy was asking for her tip. My husband had gone here before, so I trusted his judgment. I recently had a car accident a month before so my body was sore and I didn't get rest in the hospital, so I really needed a massage. A good one! I noticed it might be a problem when I was never asked if there were any areas that are sensitive or pressure level. Those three things are common in good massage parlors. I received the worst massage I ever had. My husband and I got a couple massages. I've never had a massage where elbows were used. I've visited golden islands for the first time about five months ago. Originally I would have missed the place as it's in the shopping mall near Sally's beauty supply and target. I was casually walking past and was encouraged to come in by one of the workers at the front desk. I decided to give them a try and I was pleasantly surprised at the low prices for an hour long body massage and hour long foot massage. The original services were conducted by a very nice therapist and my wife and I were thoroughly pleased with the service we received and tipped accordingly. Fast forward several months later I've noticed that there is a overwhelming odor in many of the massage rooms and I could deal with the lack of bells and whistle's based on the price and the quality of the massages I received. Although the ladies are usually rather heavy-handed my tension knots feel better after the treatments and so as a result I continue to return. During the last visit after finishing my massage I felt very badly about not having any cash to give the therapist a tip at which point he insisted that I give him a tip before I left. The therapist Andy was very offputting and honestly his insistence on me giving him a tip became downright uncomfortable to the point that I had to have them charge the tip to my card which cost me an additional two dollars. I thought this was a one off experience and returned to give them another try today and wouldn't you know Andy and my masseuse both insisted on a tip after services were completed. Ordinarily I wouldn't have had an issue tipping however my therapist was so light handed all the knots that I came in with were still there when I left. Since my wife had to leave before my treatment was done I was confronted by Andy who told me that she did not pay him at which point I questioned this because I pre-paid for our services. After telling them that his insistence on receiving tips to the point of bullying customers was unappreciated he laughed. I then informed him and the other therapist that I hope they enjoyed the tip that I was going to give because it would be the last time they would see me in Golden massage.
