I had previously bookmarked this place on my yelp account but never got around to trying it until now. We got there 50 minutes before they closed. We didn't realize that this restaurant served Japanese and Chinese food until we got there. So we ordered a mixture of foods: the sizzling rice soup in medium, the young seaweed with fried fish, the golden lover roll, and the lion king roll. I thought it was really cool that this restaurant takes your order on a tablet, which is a huge upgrade from the normal pad and paper ordering. Our servers were really nice, always checking up on us to see if we needed anything and refilling our waters despite the fact that we were the only customers left in the restaurant. The first thing that came out was the sizzling rice soup. This is one of my favorite soups. You can't really go wrong with it. Their sizzling rice soup was so good. They don't add water chestnuts to their soup but they make up for it with a lot of vegetables, like peas, carrots, mushrooms, and broccoli, which is equally yummy. The broth is very simple and they don't add msg to it. A medium sized bowl was enough for both of us to have seconds. The second thing that came out was the golden lover roll and the lion king roll. The golden lover roll was a take on the cherry blossom roll, but better because the tuna sashimi was so fresh that it melted in your mouth. The rice in the roll was flavorful and they didn't over stuff the roll with rice like some other places do. As for the lion king roll, it was pretty good as well. Though I still like the lion king roll at Sushi House the best. The lion king roll was moist and had good flavor. The last thing that came out was the young seaweed with fried fish. Honestly, we only ordered this dish because we saw a picture of it on the menu and we were up to trying new things. I'm glad we did. Though it looked really weird, like fried green hair, the young seaweed was really light and flaky. And the dipping sauce complemented the seaweed and fried fish. The sauce tastes like the mayo used on walnut prawns. If you like seaweed like I do, this dish is worth trying. We were too full to finish this plate so we took it to go. The waiter gave us a complimentary fruit dish which consisted of cut up watermelon and honeydew pieces. He also gave us some complimentary fortune cookies in a basket, allowing us to take as many as we wanted. And he gave us a whole honeydew fruit. I had noticed some of the tables that were there before us had honeydew on their table but I didn't think they would seriously give us one until they actually did. The best Asian food around. Every time I go, there's a positive experience brought back with me. One time, I was hungry. Really hungry. The waiter (owner) comes out and brings a bowl of hot sour soup. Not only was it delicious, but I let him know and he gave me an entire soup container to go. Another time they were closed. But I came in and asked if we could order something. The girl working there answered yes, as long as it was to go. So... They stayed open half an hour later than usual to get me and my friend an order to go. All stories come with complementary organic fruits like mangoes, plums, and as many fortune cookies you can stuff into your pocket. This is all accompanied by their gracious demeanor, which is refreshingly awesome to be around someone who gives that kind of care to their customers. Oh yeah, order whatever. Just moved to the area and we've already been here a couple of times. This place has several very large TVs if you're looking to watch the game while grabbing a bite to eat. Very friendly staff, generous portions and excessive amounts of fruit and fortune cookies following the check. Its top notch. I tried this place because a friend recommended it to me. I was skeptical at first due to the large number of Asian food restaurants in Moraga with average food. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of food and service. The servers seem to really care about the experience you have at the restaurant being prompt to bring both food and drink. The food was excellent and a reasonable price. I have enjoyed the orange chicken, sweet and sour pork, and chicken fried rice. Everything that I have ordered was hot and had good taste. I have also had lunch here and I think they have one of the best deals in Moraga. For two people it was roughly $25 for an orange chicken lunch, a prawn dish, California rolls (6), a coke, two small salads and soups. First timers tips: The servers are very eager to take your order feel free to tell them you need a minute. They are not being push they are simply trying to give you great service. read more

Great local find! We came in early (5:30) with hungry kids, and were the first ones in the place. We ordered up California rolls, chicken fried rice, shrimp with green beans, and orange chicken. The California rolls were really exceptional--very fresh and smooth. The main dishes came, except they brought chicken green beans instead of shrimp. We told them since it was already cooked we'd take the chicken, but they told us it was on the house and made up a shrimp and green bean dish as well. The fried rice was very nice. The orange chicken was especially crisp, although the sauce was a little gooier than I prefer, and the chicken and green beans (and shrimp with green beans) were perfectly cooked and superb. They topped off the meal with a basket of fresh fortune cookies, a bag of oranges, and a fruit plate. The service was a little overly solicitious but very courteous and speedy, and we're thrilled to have discovered a place this good so close to home. We will be back! read more

Interesting mix of Chinese and Japanese options. What everyone has said is true: good service, complimentary items (mangoes, fortune cookies, etc) and decent food. Salmon teriyaki was cooked well with good flavors and was crispy - not many places get this right. The bento box was such a good lunch special that I could not pass it up. California rolls was.. well... it's California rolls. My boyfriend is obsessed with ramen so he got the Miso based ramen; stated it was so-so. I went there recently for my fourth visit. Was very pleased on previous visits however this time I was very disappointed. All the dishes tasted exactly the same. Bland and salty. The portion sizes are small by Chinese restaurant standards yet the prices are on the high side. This was going to be my go to Chinese restaurant in lamorinda area but after this last visit I'm still on the hunt for decent reasonably priced and presented Chinese food. Came here because of the 4.5 rating. Unfortunately, this was the worst 4.5 star restaurant I have ever been to. I'm giving this place a 2 star review because the service was decent. Ordered the Dynamite roll and the sashimi lunch platter. The dynamite roll was 4 medium sized pieces and pretty bland. The sashimi platter was dry and had 7 small pieces of sashimi, and the total came out to be around $25. Normally I wouldn't complain about the setting, but a 4.5 star restaurant should not have random items scattered on various dining tables. I strongly suspect falsification of reviews. read more

New to Walnut Creek, we went on a search for that ONE Chinese restaurant that has the best food. We finally found what we were looking for just a short drive away to Moraga. The Golden Palace was a treat from the minute we got there--easy free parking and a warm welcome once in the door. The menu is terrific--so many interesting choices, many a little different than the standard fare. For wine, you get almost a full glass (not the one-third glass). We had the won-ton soup, and it was the best ever--so fresh tasting. My husband had Hong Kong pan fried noodles and that is what he will stick with all of times we will keep coming here. I had the mango chicken, mild and fresh. I am more adventuresome, so I will eat my way though more of the menu. The fruit displays are joyful to look at and delicious to consume. Went for dinner on Saturday. Everything was good. Two exceptions. The Golden Fried Rice! It's very much like the seafood fried rice from a large East Asian city seafood restaurant in Emeryville with a nice view, but only better seasoned, more crab, and half the price. I recommend this dish the next time you go to Golden Palace. The other dish was recommended and supposedly made of beef tenderloin. It might have tasted ok - I don't know, because I was concentrating on chewing through gristle. There was only enough nuggets of meat for each person to have one piece. (5) I do not recommend the Golden Beef. Otherwise, very friendly and attentive service, good food, two tvs to watch sports, if that is important to you. read more

This is my first time to Golden Palace. I was visiting a friend in Moraga and we wanted to try some sushi. After searching on Yelp, we decided to give this place a try based on its high reviews. First of all, this restaurant has its own parking lot and there are lots of parking spots, which is a big plus for a girl who lives in the city and always need to struggle to find parking. There was only a few minutes wait for the table, and we got seated fast, and staffs greeted us promptly. Our server were pretty attentive the entire time throughout our dinner. We ordered couple of the sushi rolls. The size of all rolls was pretty decent. The baked scallops roll was served hot and creamy. The roll with avocado and smoked salmon was a great combination. At the end of the meal, the owner Jay gave us complimentary dessert, the little MiKy orange, and that really warms my heart. Golden Palace really deserves a 5 star for taking a good care of this first time visitor. read more

We booked Golden Palace for a family dinner on the Thursday before our wedding. We were having a pretty big rehearsal dinner, so we wanted a party of 19 (unbelievably, that's just our immediate family!) Anyway - we wrote Golden Palace here on Yelp asking if they could/wanted to accomodate a party of 19 with all gluten free food. I have Celiac Disease, and the last thing I wanted two days before my wedding was gluten poisoning from some misplaced soy sauce or noodle. So, we set up a time to meet with Jay, who wrote us on Yelp. We drove out to Moraga and Jay wasn't there. After waiting for 15 minutes, a man named Norman sat us down, got us water and asked us why we were waiting (but was very apt to help). We explained what we were doing there and he asked us if we could do some food gluten free and some not, because not everyone needed the gluten free food. We explained why we needed it and he nodded. So, he crossed out all of the items on the to-go menu that couldn't be made gluten free, helped us figure out some portion ideas and sent us on our way with an agreement that we'd write in our menu items the beginning of the following week. By the way, it should be known that my hubby and I both worked in restaurants for a long long time, so we know its hard to do a 19 person party with allergies. We wanted to make it as simple as possible. Family style. Gluten Free. Here's the order 4 days in advance, just get us our drinks and drop the food and we'll tip you 25%. So fast forward to Tuesday morning the week of the wedding. We e-mail in our food choices. The email asked them to express any concern so that we could plan ahead, etc. We didn't hear back, assuming that was a good thing and then on Wednesday afternoon we receive a phone call, telling us that because their kitchen is small that they can't do all of the food gluten free and cook for the rest of the restaurant on a busy Thursday night. Well, that's all well and good - but why didn't you tell us that before you took the reservation when we told you all gluten free? They left us with no restaurant to go to, 19 people to feed and a bride and groom super freakin stressed out.
